Owen Wilson may have been in the MCU ever since he joined Loki led by Tom Hiddleston back in 2021, but the actor recently got an offer that most of the Marvel’s stars can’t boast of.
Seemingly a one-in-a-million opportunity that would make him a fortune, the offer was nonetheless quick to be shut down — and the problem here lies in the upcoming movie’s very controversial storyline.
Apart from being one of Hollywood’s biggest actors with a lot of acclaimed works under his belt, Owen Wilson, to his fans’ pure delight, also appears to be a man of his word with solid morality.
As director Joshua Newton has recently revealed, Wilson turned down his generous offer of $12 million to star in Newton’s upcoming crime thriller The Juice. The film will presumably tell the truth about O.J. Simpson’s scandalous arrest following his wife Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder.

O.J. Simpson, one of the most controversial figures in America’s history, died on April 10, 2024 of cancer. A former superstar, “The Juice,” as he was known, was an NFL star, as well as a perspective actor who ultimately became one of America’s most notorious public figures after the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1994. And while Simpson was acquitted in a criminal trial, he was later found liable for the murders in a civil suit. Simpson never recovered and later ended up in jail for armed robbery and kidnapping. He spent his last years in freedom but was ridden with diseases and disgraced as a public figure.
And while no one really doubts that Simpson did it, despite the acquittal, there seems to be a plan to shoot a movie that claims that Simpson didn’t actually do it. Titled The Juice, originally titled Nicole and O.

Loki star Owen Wilson is still not letting O. J. Simpson off the hook for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson was acquitted in the infamous trial that still has many people divided on the final non-guilty verdict. Wilson refused to star in the upcoming film, titled The Juice, which portrays the NFL star as innocent of the murder. The Wedding Crashers star was offered a boatload of money for the role.

While the majority of fans appreciated Wilson walking away from the project, a few believed that the actor should have respected the justice system’s motto of ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ The controversial film is being helmed by British director Joshua Newton.

A New O.J. Movie Stars the Controversial Charlotte Kirk (But Definitely Not Owen Wilson)
Hey, Hollywood, anybody interested in a partially finished film about how O.J. Simpson might have been innocent? One that stars Charlotte Kirk — the English actress best known for her previous role in taking down moguls Kevin Tsujihara and Ron Meyer in a 2019 sex scandal — as Nicole Brown Simpson? If yes, this is your lucky day. According to British director Joshua Newton, about 30 minutes of The Juice (originally titled Nicole and O.J.) is in the can, mostly flashback scenes featuring Kirk and German-born actor Boris Kodjoe, currently on ABC’s Station 19, who plays the late NFL star turned acquitted murderer. Newton, who has been working on this “satirical thriller” since 2015, says the picture’s main plotline involves a real-life attorney named Douglas McCann who got sucked into various conspiracy theories during Simpson’s 1995 criminal trial.

The final film starring Hollywood great Roy Scheider will finally be released 15 years after the actor’s 2008 death. But even with that hook, advertising for Beautiful Blue Eyes will be a bit tricky, as Facebook has banned any advertising for the movie.
Apparently, the issue stems from the film’s title, Beautiful Blue Eyes, as it “includes direct or indirect assertions or implications about a person’s race,” thus violating Facebook policies. In the movie, Roy Scheider plays a Holocaust survivor who travels to Nuremberg and inadvertently comes across the former Nazi officer responsible for his family’s deaths.
Following news that advertising for Beautiful Blue Eyes would be “permanently restricted” on the social media site, director Joshua Newton said, “This is the action of haters – and there are sadly many in our society – who seek to damage the film in order to trivialize the Holocaust.”

The social media giant said the film’s title, which refers to the eye color of a child who perished at the hands of the Nazis and invokes...

The Story of Film: A New Generation opens at two dozen theaters this weekend — Laemmle Royal in LA, Museum of the Moving Image in NY, Music Box Theatre in Chicago and Brattle in Cambridge. It’s a mix of arthouses, cinematheques, museums and even a few multiplexes for Mark Cousins’ follow-up to his 15-hour, 2011 opus The Story Of Film: An Odyssey. (This one clocks a relatively brief three hours.)
Several theaters are programming repertory series with the release, “which we feel will elevate its profile and continue the conversation,” said Kyle Westphal, head of theatrical sales for Music Box Films, the distributor for both installments.
A New Generation debuted at Cannes to strong reviews, Deadline’s here. Now, Westphal said, the first film, only available in standard definition, has been remastered in HD and both works will be released in a Blu-ray box set. The earlier work, which essentially played...

Roy Scheider is one of those actors who never faltered with age and always retained his dedication to his craft. His final performance, in this very personal film by Joshua Newton, is a testament to that craft, and will not disappoint fans. Finally patched together over a decade after it was shot, the film itself has structural problems and is rather less satisfying, but there’s a solid story underneath it.
Scheider plays Joseph, a former police officer visiting Germany to see his son’s family. It’s not clear whether or not this is the first time he has been there since the Second World War, but he clearly finds it difficult, imagining Nazi officers everywhere – an experience rather crudely conveyed by black and white point of view shots which keep appearing every minute or two long after the point has been made. We know something of what Joseph has been through.

“Beautiful Blue Eyes,” the last film starring Roy Scheider, will release worldwide on June 10, following a charity premiere in London on June 6.
The two-time Oscar nominee died in 2008 while “Beautiful Blue Eyes” was being filmed. Completion of the film was put on hold until AI and CG technology was advanced enough to overcome the technical challenges faced by the filmmakers.

Charlotte Kirk, the actress accused of extorting money from some of Hollywood’s most powerful players, said in court documents filed last week that she has become a “pariah in the film industry” and that she was groomed at a young age to participate in “commercial sex.”
Kirk is currently suing her former lawyers and battling with Marty Singer over an injunction which keeps her from pursuing legal action against any of the parties involved. She had relationships with former Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara and former NBCUniversal vice chairman Ron Meyer, each of whom resigned over their involvement with Kirk.
In a declaration she gave in July (which was made public last week), Kirk said that when she moved to the U.S., she “fell in with the wrong group of people who sought to exploit and manipulate me, taking full advantage of my difficulty with social situations, due to my autism.

Kevin Tsujihara denies that his past extramarital relationship with actress Charlotte Kirk, which led to his ouster as the CEO of Warner Bros. in March 2019, was anything but consensual, following a report on Thursday that Kirk had accused him of engaging “in non-consensual intercourse.”

Simpson was acquitted due to a wardrobe malfunction. That human being is Joshua Newton, who most recently wrote and directed the not-good Iron Cross. The idea behind An American Mystery (no kidding) is to present more suspects and more information in order to shift the story into the mystery genre. No word yet on how Hercule Poirot will be involved, but Newton has already cast newcomer Charlotte Kirk (who will be seen in a small role in the Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop) as Brown-Simpson. Naturally, the project also has the backing of several former athletes and current politicians. Because, you know, why not. While I fully recognize we’ve reached such...

British director Joshua Newton (Iron Cross) is working on a new movie, called "An American Mystery," a $65 million thriller focusing on Nicole Brown Simpson, the murdered wife of Oj Simpson. Charlotte Kirk (Non-Stop) will play Nicole from when she first met Oj as an 18 year-old in 1977 to her untimely death alongside Ron Goldman. Newton will write and direct the film, with plans of releasing it next summer, in time for the 20-year anniversary of the unsolved crime. According to Newton, Oj himself expressed a desire to be involved with the project upon learning of its existence, though the filmmaker turned him down. "While we are creating an artistic work, the essence of the film is the search for truth," he said. "It was easy to determine that Oj's participation is not consistent with our standards. Our goal is to lay bare the facts and have the audience reach their own conclusions.

Friday, Forsport Enterprises announced that the film — entitled An American Mystery – was set to go into production for a major theatrical release in the summer of 2014.
Joshua Newton will be directing the effort with $65 million at his disposal from a group of venture capitalists and fund managers, according to the announcement. Newton is somewhat of an unknown, but most recently directed...

By now you know all about the controversy surrounding Iron Cross, the handiwork of one Joshua Newton and the final film of the great Roy Scheider. Perhaps the saddest thing about the scandal afflicting this film and Variety -- which allegedly buried a bad review of the film over Newton's $400,000 ad buy and putative Oscar campaign for Scheider -- is how much sturm und drang and bitter angst is being expended over something as monumentally dreadful-looking as this. Click through for your slightly-used evidence.

The NY Times weighed in today with its assessment of the utter shitshow that is Variety, assaying a nicely observed survey from a few thousand feet above what appear to be the lawsuit-addled, staff-hemorrhaging, cash-poor trade institution's death throes. Sure, there are a few generally insane disclosures here, like the part about editor Timothy Gray removing that infamous Iron Cross pan "after a lawyer for the director and producer, Joshua Newton, objected, but reposted it after viewing the film and deciding to 'stand by the review as it was written.'" But for my money, let's go directly into the newsroom for a profile in abject terror from an anonymous staffer.

Joshua Newton, the producer and director of "Iron Cross," has sued Variety for fraud and breach of contract over a negative review of his film that he claims undermined a $400,000 advertising campaign orchestrated by the trade. Grilled by Sharon Waxman, he accuses Variety editor Tim Gray of lying, and says publisher Neil Stiles told him he planned to end all reviews in 2010. Asked for a response, Gray had no comment and Stiles did not respond to an email.

If you read Cinematical every day and/or keep close tabs on the morality of our industry you might have seen a big scandal arise over on Hollywood's stalwart trade paper, Variety. Scott Weinberg brought you the news that Variety had reportedly pulled a negative review of the film Iron Cross once the film's director and producer, Joshua Newton, spent $400,000 on advertising banners.
Gawker never could get a response from Variety, but the La Times did. Variety put Robert Koehler's review of Iron Cross back up, and claimed they had taken it down in order to investigate "factual inaccuracies" after Newton complained. This investigation included Variety's editor Tim Gray actually sitting and watching the film, and deciding that the trade could stand by Koehler's review. Gray declined to give his own opinion on the film to the Times.
But Iron Cross' Newton isn't satisfied. According to the New York Times,...

Variety has long been seen as the definitive publication of Hollywood, doling out industry news and unhip slang for over 100 years now. In these days of blogging and citizen journalism, it has managed to maintain an air of respectability as well, to the point where a news story is not usually considered "confirmed" until it has been published by Variety. Stiff competition from the blogosphere is still taking its toll, however, and as the magazine slowly loses scoops and readers, it is apparently being forced to compromise itself in other ways. Last week, Gawker [1] broke a juicy story that calls into question the ethics of this prestigious paper. It would appear that they removed a negative review of a movie called Iron Cross (a Nazi revenge thriller that was also Roy Scheider's final film) from their website after the film's producers called to complain. Apparently they had paid Variety...

What.s Variety.s take on Joshua Newton.s film Iron Cross? It seems we.re not supposed to know because according to Variety, the review doesn.t exist. Apparently the film.s producers didn.t appreciate Robert Koehler.s opinion and it was removed from the site. Thanks to Google cache, you can still access Koehler.s thoughts and see for yourself why his negative take on the film may not have gelled with a certain financial arrangement. Back in December, the La Times reported that the producers of Iron Cross dropped a whopping $400,000 to have Variety run an ad for the film .every day until Oscar voters have turned in their ballots in late January.. The deal also included booking the film into Variety.s screening series, which would include Q&As with both Newton and his son Alexander who has a role in the film. Gawker points...

Right now it's looking rather embarassing for the ones managing the showbiz trade magazine Variety after a story broke on the Gawker website yesterday. The evidence assembled by Gawker's John Cook was pretty damning: that Variety had pulled a negative review of the film Iron Cross by freelancer Robert Koehler for a $400,000 ad campaign to support the film's chances for an Oscar nomination, the last starring role for actor Roy Scheider.
Iron Cross never got a single Oscar nom but the ads did run on Variety's site and in their print magazine. The $400K figure comes from a Los Angeles Times story back in November 2009 about the makers of Iron Cross trying to attain a Best Actor nomination for Scheider. After contacting Variety for a comment about the situation, the trade told Gawker that the trade "does not comment on internal matters."

Moviemaker Joshua Newton is racing to complete the film that has become Jaws star Roy Scheider's final project, so the actor can be considered for a posthumous Best Actor Oscar.
Scheider was twice nominated for an Academy Award during his life, and Newton is determined to do what he can to make sure his late star lands a third nod.
The director must screen his unfinished movie at least once before Christmas for it to meet consideration deadlines.
Roy Scheider, who earned his nominations for All That Jazz and The French Connection, died after losing his battle with cancer in 2007.
Newton tells the Los Angeles Times he has turned his Beverly Hills home into a 24/7 production house with teams of editors and sound mixers working in shifts to complete the drama, in which Scheider plays a Holocaust survivor and retired cop who travels to Nuremberg to reconcile with his son, and unexpectedly encounters a man he suspects is the the Nazi commander responsible for his family's deaths during World War Two.
The director says, "This is what Roy would have wanted. Battling with cancer, Roy put every ounce of effort into his performance. His performance is magnificent, but obviously it's up to other people to decide that. We are honouring Roy Scheider by putting this up for the academy."...

Roy Scheider died before Iron Cross filming ended - but a make-up expert and a latex mask saved the show
When film star Roy Scheider died last year, a crucial scene in the action film he was making had not yet been completed. The film-makers' unique answer was to build a prosthetic latex mask based on Scheider's distinctive features and to use it, along with computer-generated imagery, to bring the lead actor back to life for one last performance.
Scheider, who was renowned for his portrayal of tough cops, made his name in the 1970s with central roles in Jaws and The French Connection. The 75-year-old star's death, which was marked last night at a big Hollywood memorial gathering, had left the English director of the unfinished revenge thriller, Iron Cross, facing a big problem. But Joshua Newton hopes his film has survived disaster thanks to his collaboration with Louis Lazzara,...
