The National Hispanic Media Coalition is mounting a campaign to educate Hollywood leaders about the economic value of the Latino audience as well as the need to bring more Latinos into senior roles at all levels of entertainment.
The Nhmc, the nearly 40-year-old Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group led by Brenda Victoria Castillo, has published a 32-page guide designed to be a roadmap for the entertainment industry. Actor Gabriel Luna is among the prominent Latino talents who is supporting Nhmc’s initiative. Castillo is about to make the rounds with senior executives in media and entertainment to press them on the lack of progress for Latinos, particularly in the executive suites.
After many years in the trenches as an advocate, Castillo believes there is a high level of misunderstanding about the Latino community.
“I personally will facilitate private, custom-designed sessions tailored to top executives,” Castillo tells Variety. “In other words,...

The eerie, extremely-online world of the the cult Love Has Won, and its founder Amy “Mother God” Carlson, are getting the full HBO docuseries treatment.
The new trailer for Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God starts at the only place to start with the Carlson/Love Has Won story: bodycam footage of police officers entering a house and learning, “Mother is in rest. :When it comes to teen coming-of-age movies, the premise of Hulu's "Miguel Wants to Fight" sounds pretty formulaic. Our hero Miguel wants to get into a fight before moving out of town and is helped by his group of loyal friends. Think "American Pie" but violence - rather than sex.
Director Oz Rodriguez's "Miguel Wants to Fight" is about trying to fit yourself into the mold society says you should be in. In this particular case, it's a physically aggressive male, which isn't true to who our protagonist is.
"This kid lives in a town where fighting is a big deal. Where boxing is a huge deal and his dad is a fighter," Rodriguez tells Popsugar, "Miguel would rather not. He just wants to watch movies and watch dudes beat up themselves."
Still, that's where Miguel finds himself, butting up against cultural norms that can be pretty limiting for Latino boys.

The death of a child will always make for a difficult installment.
They had quite the case on Chicago Pd Season 10 Episode 19, as the series returned with an Atwater-centric where the case involving a father and son had Atwater re-evaluating his own relationship with Lew.
And the team went into overdrive, scrambling to spare a pre-teen from going to prison for something that wasn't his fault.
We were due to check back in with Atwater's personal arc regarding his relationship with his father, and once again, it was through a case that they managed to bond deeper.
The opener was nice as we caught a glimpse of Atwater in his personal life, running the apartment building that he owns. It's something that he's talked about in passing, and he even tried to get Ruzek to go in on the endeavor with him before. But this is the first time we...

Even though it’s been decades since it first premiered, La Usurpadora remains one of the campiest, most beloved classics in the telenovela canon. Its 102-episode run was full of jaw-dropping plot twists and shocking surprises that gripped audiences from the moment the Spanish-language drama premiered in February 1998 (in Mexico, three out of every four people reportedly watched the show, which was broadcasted in more than 125 countries.)

There are some activities in this life that truly signal the start of adulthood. From doing your taxes (ugh) to buying your first car (yay), the milestones are endless and garner a sense of pride, proving that you don’t need the ‘rents around to remind you how and when to be a responsible civilian. One unsuspecting, often forgotten task that culminates in being a grown-up is throwing out your ratty hair brush that you’ve had since college. (We’re not judging.)

In “The Same Storm,” it’s a welcome surprise to see Elaine May appear as one of the faces in writer-director Peter Hedges’ impressively diverse and starry ensemble, who take turns contributing scenes about the challenges of life during lockdown. May portrays spiky Ruth Lipsman Berg, who hops on a teleconference with a new doctor and her home health aide. Daphne Rubin-Vega is Lupe, her concerned caregiver. Raza Jaffrey is the gentle but quite-clear physician trying to ascertain if Ruth has contracted the coronavirus.
Ruth was in the scene right before this one — talking with her daughter, a webcam girl — so we’re aware she’s gotten dolled up for the doctor’s call. Like a good Jewish mother, she asked the doc if he’s single. If so, she has a daughter. Forget that in the prior scene, her call to said daughter (Mary-Louise Parker) was less than kind.

Revisiting the early days of the pandemic is not on most of our to-do lists, but viewers may find “The Same Storm” worth a look all the same. Inspired by the Damian Barr quote (“We are not all in the same boat. But we are all in the same storm”) that opens the film, writer-director Peter Hedges (“Ben Is Back”) captures the raw emotions of that time using just iPhones and laptops. His intimate deep dive into the lives of 24 characters leaves virtually no aspect of the pandemic uncovered.
Although Hedges enlists several recognizable actors — including Mary-Louise Parker, Judith Light, Elaine May and Sandra Oh, along with slightly newer faces like Raúl Castillo and Moses Ingram — the drama is solidly centered on the pandemic.
Parker plays sex worker Roxy, to whom Castillo’s Nurse Joey turns to relieve some of the stress from the barrage of death brought about by the pandemic.
