For me, 2020 was already a rather stressful year before the Covid lockdowns went into effect for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Even as misfortunes both personal and professional piled up throughout the months that followed, the virus, funnily enough, was never directly to blame for my woes. Not that I can really complain; I certainly had a far easier go of it in 2020 than other people, especially when it came to my mental health. My years of working remotely and being a borderline hermit were finally paying off!
You could say my experience was a bit like George Clooney's in "The Midnight Sky." Clooney, who also directed the 2020 film, stars as Augustine Lofthouse, a scientist, and the lone person holed up at an Arctic research station that's been evacuated in the wake of a mysterious global catastrophe that's left most of the Earth's surface uninhabitable in the year 2049. Hey Netflix lovers, I’m generally not the sort of person who likes to say, “I told you so,” but…
I told you so.
Wednesday, I posted a column noting how Netflix’s descriptors — the one- or two-sentence blurbs that are supposed to help subscribers decide whether or not they might want to watch a particular piece of entertainment — have lately become something considerably less than descriptive.
I complained about how they no longer revealed much of anything that was all that useful in deciding whether to hit play on a specific movie or show — you know, like, maybe something about the plot — but instead lamely just listed the actors and director.
Like, for example, a film called “The Silence,” which is described thus: “This 2019 horror film featuring Stanley Tucci and...

Unfortunately, HBO is as good at making fans wait as they are at video game adaptations. As is prestige TV tradition, it’ll be quite some time before we see the second season of The Last of Us. While fans can always replay the first game or wade into major spoiler territory with The Last of Us Part II, you could also opt for some lo-fi post-apocalyptic stories.
Get ready to gasp, cry, and stay up all night reading six brilliant page-turners that are perfect follow-ups to The Last of Us. “It’s quite a process to be nominated,” admits Oscar nominated visual effects supervisor Matt Kasmir about the nerve-wracking build-up to the Oscar nominations announcement. Last month, after ten films made it to the rigorous VFX “bakeoff” process, all members of the motion picture academy’s visual effects branch are invited to view video presentations for the shortlisted films, where five films are cut and the remaining five become Oscar-nominated.
See Visual Effects Society Awards 2021: ‘The Midnight Sky’ wins big at Ves Awards
Kasmir acknowledges that while “it’s a huge amount of effort, you have to edit a reel, there are rules,” it is all worth it on the morning of the announcement. “Just to be nominated is such an accolade, it’s hugely exciting,” he says. He now enjoys his first ever nod, alongside his colleagues Chris Lawrence, Max Solomon and David Watkins. Watch our exclusive video interview with Kasmir above.

George Clooney is the definition of timeless, which is why it’s hard to believe the Hollywood superstar will be turning 60 in May. But before that, on March 28, Clooney will receive the AARP Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award at a virtual ceremony to be broadcast on PBS.
Clooney is an ideal fit for many reasons, perhaps most perfectly articulated by AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins: “He personifies aging with grace by proving that, with smarts and hard work, even the most extraordinary talent can improve with time. He is a slam-dunk argument against ageism.”
Clooney graced the cover of the February-March AARP Magazine, in which he joked the headline should read: “Sexiest Man Still Alive.” He also said of getting older, “I always say to my dad, ‘I’m middle-aged.’ And he goes, ‘You know a lot of 120-year-olds?’”

“Every movie presents new challenges,” admits veteran sound designer Randy Thom about the bespoke nature of mapping out the soundscape of every new project. “George’s expectations for this movie were very high,” he explains. “What is space going to sound like? What the really severe, terrible Arctic Earthbound experience going to sound like?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Thom above.
Ever since starting out as a fledgling sound effects artisan on “The Empire Strikes Back” back in 1980, Thom has amassed over 50 credits as one of the most prolific sound designers in Hollywood, racking up a staggering 15 Oscar nominations, including two wins; for Best Sound and Best Sound Editing. Notwithstanding his vast experience and knowledge in the field, Thom says that, like every film before it, “The Midnight Sky” posed new demands that required innovation and problem solving.

When George Clooney approached Alexandre Desplat about scoring “The Midnight Sky,” he told him right off the bat that he would have to write more music that he ever has before for a film. “When a director says something like that, you always think maybe it’s a fantasy and you’re going to be able to escape the iceberg that’s coming towards you with this huge amount of music to write,” Desplat tells Gold Derby (watch above). “But he was right. From the script to the film, there’s a big gap, and I wasn’t sure the movie would be as silent as it is now and that music would convey the emotions, the dangers that the characters are experiencing. But yes, he was right, and I had to compose a lot of minutes of music.”
It was about 90 minutes total and all of it made it into the Netflix film.

George Clooney's new film is fascinating for the ominous mood it conveys visually. Set against the aftermath of a global catastrophe, the sci-fi drama has poignant core, too. You spot profound intent in storytelling, and the comment it sets out to impart is an urgent one.
Of the seven films he has directed since Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind in 2002, this is by far Clooney's most ambitious project.
Clooney's new self-starring directorial is also among his most unsure efforts ever as a filmmaker, and the least engaging. Somewhere, as the narrative loses focus after a starting off on a high, you are left disappointed not just because the film tells you civilisation on the planet has ended by 2049, but because Clooney's effort fails to craft a narrative interesting enough out of that situation.
The Midnight Sky leaves you with a mixed feeling. You cannot gloss over the reality it highlights,...

Photo: 'The Midnight Sky'/Netflix It’s hard to believe but the last time George Clooney was in movies was four years ago with 2016’s ‘Money Monster’: for historical context, that was the final year of the Obama administration. And yet, the actor-director-activist has kept busy: last year he executive produced, directed, and co-starred in the ‘Catch-22’ miniseries on Hulu. At the same time, he continued his numerous humanitarian efforts with his wife Amal Clooney and became a father to twins. This brings us to ‘The Midnight Sky’ on Netflix, which marks Clooney’s return to big-screen acting as well as his seventh directorial effort after 2017’s ‘Suburbicon’. Based on the novel ‘Good Morning, Midnight’ by Lily Brooks-Dalton, this is certainly his most ambitious film as a director—a sci-fi doomsday/dystopian drama. But Clooney’s aiming for something different here with an emphasis on emotion and personal stakes.

George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, adapted by Mark L Smith from the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, looks (production design by Jim Bissell) and sounds great (score by Alexandre Desplat). The year is 2049, the same as Ridley Scott’s second Blade Runner, to all appearances a vintage of choice for post-apocalyptic movies. Albeit, for the same reason, not so healthy a year for Earth. In outer space, there is Commander Adewole (David Oyelowo) and his crew, pilot Mitchell (Kyle Chandler), radar expert Sully (Felicity Jones), navigation specialist Sanchez (Demián Bichir), and flight engineer Maya (Tiffany Boone) on the spaceship Aether, on its way back from their two-year mission surveying K23, a moon of Jupiter.

In George Clooney’s Midnight Sky, now streaming on Netflix, a cataclysmic event has happened on Earth, and a scientist named Augustine Lofthouse (played by Clooney) has decided — contra the rest of the event’s survivors, who go into hiding somewhere — to wait it out alone. That’s in part because he has cancer and feels like he’s on his last leg anyway. It’s also because he’s one of those gruff, emotionally distant, genius-types, the kind of qualities that make you charming (for the wrong reasons) as...

George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky” also stars Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler and Demián Bichir, but Clooney’s right-hand man in the film is a little girl, newcomer Caoilinn Springall. The Netflix drama, which premieres Wednesday, marks the feature film debut of the 8-year-old, who was the last person to audition among “hundreds” of girls, Clooney tells Gold Derby in a joint interview with Springall (watch above).
“She walked in and it felt immediately like Caoilinn was the right one,” the two-time Oscar winner shares. “There are things that are tricky to do as an actor — not just young actors, any actor — which is it’s hard to be afraid, to be scared. So we did some improvising and stuff like that, and Caoilinn did a great job. And I called her up and asked her if she wanted to do it.”

There’s a lot that’s frustrating about George Clooney’s new film “The Midnight Sky,” from its egregious borrowing from any number of better movies to its pacing issues, but thanks to a few grace notes, its shortcomings are mostly forgivable.
Premiering December 23 on Netflix, it’s a film that sees Clooney entering a new phase of his acting career, and it also represents an uptick among his directorial output, on the heels of the misbegotten “Suburbicon” and “The Monuments Men.” Audiences will find much of “The Midnight Sky” familiar, but that familiarity puts its original moments and ideas into sharp relief.
Some cinematheque or other needs to host a “George Clooney in space” retrospective, connecting his acting efforts in films as philosophically diverse as “Gravity,” “Solaris,” and “Tomorrowland,” and each of those efforts has certainly flavored this new feature, written by Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”), based on...

A movie that’s set partly in outer space and partly in the frozen expanses of the Arctic, “The Midnight Sky” is by far the biggest and most ambitious of the seven movies that George Clooney has directed. Based on the novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton, it takes place about 30 years in the future, when an unspecified calamity has threatened to make Earth unlivable and a team of astronauts is returning from a scouting mission at a potentially inhabitable moon of Jupiter.
In addition to directing, Clooney plays a key role in the earthbound scenes as a terminally ill scientist named Augustine Lofthouse who’s remained behind at an Arctic base that he thinks is deserted until he encounters a young girl, Iris (Caoilinn Springall). He’s driven to contact the returning astronauts, who include David Oyelowo, Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler and Demian Bichir, to tell them not to come back...

World, Hold On: Clooney Presents the End Times in Tedious Apocalyptic Exercise
It’s been a year wherein it seems the end we’ve forever been pondering from the heavens instead will likely arrive from within terra herself, which is an unfortunately dismal landing for the seventh directorial effort from George Clooney, The Midnight Sky.
Adapted from the novel Good Morning, Midnight from Lily Brooks-Dalton by Mark L. Smith, Clooney’s hollowed-out spectacle likely neglects what might have been a more beneficial literary experience than the pseudo-cerebral exercise unfolding onscreen. Despite an interesting cast, the limited narrative twists eventually feel demeaning thanks to their sheer obviousness, and the discordant technical attributes tend to distract in a film which often feels as if it could have done more with less.…...

Ahead of the release of Netflix’s forthcoming Original Film The Midnight Sky, which releases on December 23rd, a new Film Club plan has been announced. This amazing initiative, is a partnership with WaveLength, the UK’s leading loneliness charity who provide those most in need with technology to facilitate and inspire meaningful connections with others.
What is so cool is that this was inspired by The Midnight Sky, which sees George Clooney direct and star as a solitary scientist in a post-apocalyptic world. The partnership will see Netflix donate tablet computers to support WaveLength’s important work and launch a new monthly Film Club, giving beneficiaries the opportunity to come together virtually in a relaxed and sociable environment and connect with others through the power of film.

Even George Clooney is surprised by how timely his new movie, “The Midnight Sky,” has become since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. There probably isn’t anyone out there who doesn’t respect George Clooney and everything he has done, on-screen, behind the camera, and in normal life. The guy, let’s face it, is pretty much unhateable, despite being the worst Batman we have ever seen, a fact the Oscar winner will admit almost every time he is interviewed. Then again, even the most accomplished of performers would have struggled to get anything out of 1997’s catastrophe other than a tarnished reputation, but Clooney has bounced back and then some, becoming one of the biggest names in film and is back on starring/producing/directing duties with this post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama based on the 2016 book by Lily Brooks-Dalton.

“The Midnight Sky” takes place (partially) in space, but it’s not that type of space film, so it couldn’t really look like a typical one either. “It’s not really an action movie, it’s not really a formally structured adventure story. It’s really a meditation. And in that sense, the look is much different,” Jim Bissell tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Production Design panel (watch above).
Directed by and starring George Clooney, and based on the Lily Brooks-Dalton novel “Good Morning, Midnight,” “The Midnight Sky” takes place in 2049, three weeks after an unnamed “event” has decimated Earth. Highlights include original features like The Midnight Sky, as well as drama Bridgerton, and fresh seasons of returning family series. Indeed, given the amount of content already added to the service this December, it shouldn’t be difficult to find something to watch over the holidays.
In terms of original films, the George Clooney-directed The Midnight Sky provides a timely story of an Arctic scientist trying to contact a team of astronauts before they return to a worldwide catastrophe. Additionally, we’ll be getting the LGBT-themed Taiwanese picture Your Name Engraved Herein, Norwegian comedy sequel Asphalt Burning (Børning 3), and French production DNA.

Since the release of Gravity in 2013, George Clooney has been in quite the acting slump, with Brad Bird’s severely underrated Tomorrowland as the lone bright spot. Scan his IMDb page and he appears to have made more Nespresso-funded short films than studio features, albeit for altruistic causes. The directorial projects have been even direr, a far cry from the glory days of Good Night and Good Luck and The Ides of March.
Considering its pandering weightiness and saccharine heart, Clooney’s The Midnight Sky feels like a blatant attempt to get back in the good graces of unadventurous critics and Oscar voters. Adapted from the novel Good Morning, Midnight by co-screenwriter Lily Brooks-Dalton, it envisions our planet’s last gasp through the glassy, sad eyes of world-renowned scientist Augustine Lofthouse (Clooney). Afflicted with a mortal ailment, he has decided to stay on Earth while what’s left of...

George Clooney has come a long way since his breakout role as the hard-partying, womanizing pediatrician Doug Ross on NBC’s 1990s hit “ER.” But the actor-turned-filmmaker said he drew on lessons from his work on the medical drama while directing and starring in his new sci-fi epic, “The Midnight Sky.”
The movie, set partly in outer space and partly in the frozen expanses of the Arctic, is by far the biggest and most ambitious of the seven movies that Clooney has directed. Based on the novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton, it takes place about 30 years in the future, when an unspecified calamity has threatened to make Earth unlivable and a team of astronauts is returning from a scouting mission at a potentially inhabitable moon of Jupiter.

Having seen The Midnight Sky earlier in the week, I can vouch for the film being good. Not only is it bigger in scope than almost anything that George Clooney has attempted before, it’s intimate in nature, too. Clooney’s acting and direction are very much on point here. With the flick hitting select theaters tomorrow, in advance of dropping on Netflix two days before Christmas, the streaming service has released a final trailer. This last sales pitch does a good job of suggesting what’s on display here, while still leaving plenty to be discovered. It’s a good one, so don’t miss out on it. As always, the trailer can be seen at the bottom of this post, so read on… Once again, the movie is a sci-fi tale, as you might expect. Here is the official synopsis from Netflix: “Our humanity always endures. This post-apocalyptic...

George Clooney recently revealed that he was hospitalized after losing almost 25 pounds for his latest role.
The Oscar winner, who directs and stars in the forthcoming sci-fi film 'The Midnight Sky' reportedly shed the weight for his role as a scientist who survives an apocalyptic event due to which he had to spend multiple days in medical care.
For the role of a post-apocalyptic survivor, the 59-year-old actor lost nearly two stone, but was later diagnosed with pancreatitis and believes his diet may have contributed to his illness, reports Mirror.
"I think I was trying too hard to lose the weight quickly and probably wasn't taking care of myself," George Clooney said while speaking to the Mirror.
"It took a few weeks to get better and as a director, it's not so easy because you need energy. We were out on this glacier in Finland, which made it a lot harder work.

Not every actor who tries his or her hand at directing has the chops to be a true filmmaker; in fact, very few do. But George Clooney, in the early 2000s, took to directing as if born to it. His first effort, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002), had an early Charlie Kaufman script that Clooney staged with attitude and style, getting the audience to buy into a gonzo what-if? biopic of Chuck Barris. Clooney’s sophomore effort, “Good Night, and Good Luck” (2005), vividly dramatized the war between the TV newsman Edward R. Murrow and Sen. Joseph McCarthy, with Clooney using the black-and-white cinematography to make the 1950s broadcast-news world (and everyone in it) pop. “The Ides of March” (2011) caught the postmodern cynicism of our greedy and gridlocked political culture.

Clooney desperately tries to warn a returning spaceship of earthly apocalypse in this languid space caper
Encountering an acquaintance in London’s Piccadilly in the mid-1970s, Alec Guinness is said to have remarked, with a self-effacing smile, that he was growing a beard for a new science fiction film he was working on: “A small part, so a small beard.” George Clooney has a very big beard for his own medium-sized part in this negligible new sci-fi, which floats blandly in the cosmos, becalmed between two separate storylines, apparently planetstruck with wonderment.
Clooney also directs, working from a script that Mark L Smith has adapted from a 2016 bestseller by Lily Brooks-Dalton, Good Morning, Midnight. He does this with a sure hand, managing a disparate cast, each of whom has to deliver an individual emotional impact. As an actor, George Clooney serves up self-deprecation and charm; as a filmmaker, the same impulses come across as bitter and ironic convictions. That’s certainly the case in “The Midnight Sky,” a gorgeous take on the apocalypse that doesn’t try to reinvent the formula because, well, you know how these things go. Clooney directs and stars in this ambitious adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s 2016 novel, and there’s much to appreciate about his by-the-book approach: Despite the blockbuster budget, he’s crafted , laced together with mournful gazes at the icy tundra and the sad revolutions of spacecraft en route to its dying home.
As it slips between these lyrical settings, Clooney conjures both the cosmic awe of “Gravity” and the eerie isolation of “The Thing,” an admirable set of traditions that lend an imitative feel for much of the movie. Yet for the actor-filmmaker, this somber, effects-driven tone...

Space and silence are the structural bones of Netflix’s “The Midnight Sky.” Still, the spirit and heart are fixed within its visual decorations and taut narrative that allows director, producer and star George Clooney to examine uncharted and personal territories. Based on the book “Good Morning, Midnight” by Lily Brooks-Dalton, there’s a compelling case to be made that “The Midnight Sky” is his finest hour, both in direction and performance. He assembles an impeccable crafts team, all of which could dominate the below-the-line Oscar categories, even leaping to the front of a few. When a movie has a strong chance of dominating multiple technical races, nominations for best director and picture are usually not too far off. As movie theaters remain absent from the film-watching experience, the alluring drama is as close to “home” as you can feel in 2020.

It’s two days after Thanksgiving when George Clooney speaks to Deadline to discuss his ambitious The Midnight Sky, a timely sci-fi film split between a spacecraft and the frozen Iceland tundra. Scripted by The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith and just as rugged in its outdoor scenes, the film provides an up-the-road look at what might happen to Earth if mankind doesn’t slow the pace of a warming planet that is a gassy, ruined and uninhabitable husk just 29 years from now. Clooney stars as Augustine Lofthouse, an ailing scientist who has made it possible for survivors to migrate, but who stays behind in the Arctic to help everyone else as they head for a new start in a new paradise in space. He’s surprised by a small child stowaway he needs to take with him to move to a station with a strong antenna to warn the...

Not only did George Clooney confirm to Jimmy Kimmel that he’s been using a Flowbee to cut his own hair for decades, the “Midnight Sky” actor and director demonstrated it. Yes, on Kimmel’s live television show
Clooney says his assistant first got him the Flowbee off of a TV commercial 22 years ago.

But the late-night host said he’s never used it — until Wednesday, when the boys Flowbee-d together. Live on ABC.

George Clooney has a unique distinction when it comes to Oscar history. The multi-faceted filmmaker and star has been nominated for Academy Awards in an impressive six different categories, a rare feat that includes for Best Picture (Argo), Actor, Supporting Actor (Syriana), Director, Adapted Screenplay (The Ides of March) and Original Screenplay. He has won twice, as a producer on Argo (2012) and Supporting Actor in Syriana (2005). He could well find himself in contention in many of these categories again for his latest film, The Midnight Sky, which Netflix will launch on December 23 — his first movie project made for the streaming giant.

Netflix’s sci-fi drama “The Midnight Sky,” set for release next month, will see George Clooney as a scientist in the Arctic trying to protect a little girl, and prevent a group of astronauts from coming back home after a global catastrophe.
“It’s two different worlds; we were basically saying we were going to shoot ‘The Revenant’ and stop, and then shoot ‘Gravity,’” said Clooney about his seventh feature as a director during an online seminar at EnergaCamerimage Film Festival dedicated to “The Midnight Sky,” an adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton novel “Good Morning, Midnight.” He was accompanied by the film’s cinematographer Martin Ruhe.
“Usually, when space movies are shot, up is up and down is down, and that’s not exactly how it works. In ‘Gravity,’ the camera was constantly rotating. We wanted to keep the idea of the horizon being different, without making everyone throw up along the way.

I'm a big fan of Clooney's grizzled-old-man films, one in which he sports a magnificent greying beard and seems more than a bit curmudgeonly, like The Perfect Storm and Tomorrowland. And he's proven to be an excellent director as well, with Good Night and Good Luck, The Ides of March, and The Monuments Men. He's shown mainly an interest in political content, so it's interesting to see him turn to more cerebral science fiction for his latest film, The Midnight Sky. Netflix’s “The Midnight Sky,” an apocalyptic sci-fi drama starring and directed by George Clooney, offers insight into a possible future where unspecified destruction renders the earth uninhabitable.
In a trailer released on Tuesday, Clooney’s character is searching for a way to warn other survivors against returning to Earth after a global catastrophe. The film, based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel “Good Morning, Midnight,” was shot ahead of the Covid-19 shutdown and before the onslaught of fires seen in 2020, but the calamities Earth faces in the film feel eerily similar.
“It’s science fiction, which unfortunately is less fictional as we move through the days,” said Clooney in an interview with Vanity Fair. “The sickness of hate and the elements that come from that, battles and wars — that has been percolating for quite some time.”

After lending his talents to an outer space setting as an actor in efforts such as Steven Soderbergh’s “Solaris” and Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar winner “Gravity,” George Clooney is finally ready to tackle outer space from the director’s chair with his upcoming adventure “The Midnight Sky.” The Netflix release is an adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel “Good Morning, Midnight” and features an ensemble cast that includes Clooney, Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, and Demián Bichir.
“The Midnight Sky” stars Clooney as a cancer-stricken scientist who tries to prevent a group of astronauts from returning to Earth after a global catastrophe wipes out the planet. If the astronauts make it back to Earth, they’ll most likely die. To send a message to the spaceship, the scientist must venture out into the toxic environment to reach an observatory that has enough power to send a communication through the atmosphere.
