The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has officially announced its first permanent exhibit, one dedicated to the Jewish history of the film industry.
The museum presents “Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital,” which will be on view beginning May 19, 2024. Presented in English and Spanish, the exhibit tells the origin story of filmmaking in early 20th-century Los Angeles, spotlighting the impact of the predominately Jewish filmmakers whose establishment of the American film studio system transformed Los Angeles into a global epicenter of cinema.
“The American film industry began developing amid an influx of immigration to the United States by Jewish émigrés escaping European pogroms and poverty,” curator Dara Jaffe said in a press statement. “Most of Hollywood’s founders were among this wave of Jewish immigrants and recognized that the infant movie business presented an opportunity to raise their marginalized status in an industry that didn’t...

Responding to the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s’ urgent call for help to stay in business, several industry leaders and organizations have stepped up — but not nearly as many as are needed to keep Hollywood’s 101-year-old charity afloat. MPTF hopes to raise at least 300,000 in its star-studded first telethon, which will air December 10 on Ktla in Los Angeles.
Hit by a “perfect storm” of rising expenses and declining revenue during the Covid pandemic, the MPTF said in October that it was facing its “imminent demise” and the very real prospect of closing its doors and going out of business by the end of 2022 unless it received 10 million-12 million in cash donations by the end of the year to meet its bank line compliance and continue ongoing operations.

Veteran screenwriter John Logan makes his directorial debut with “They/Them,” a Blumhouse horror movie set in a gay conversion camp, and his formidable screenwriting prowess is what really sets this picture apart from others in the horror genre.
Logan is more interested in psychological horror than in the typical slice-and-dice of slasher movies, and in several scenes here he achieves a remarkable intensity.
Looking at Logan’s distinguished list of credits as a screenwriter – including “Any Given Sunday,” “Gladiator,” “The Aviator” and “Skyfall” – it is not too apparent that he would be the first choice for material like this. But writers should be free to write about whatever they want, of course, and it feels clear in “They/Them” that Logan is smart, informed and insightful about the most complicated contemporary gender issues.

At the opening-night party of Matt Tyrnauer’s hit documentary “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood” at Tim Burton’s Chateau Marmont apartment, Scotty Bowers, the tousle-haired author of 2012 tell-all “Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars,” celebrated his 95th birthday.
“So how gay was Spencer Tracy?” I asked him.
“He got drunk and thanked the man beside him in the morning for taking care of him,” he said with a gap-toothed grin, taunting me with his next provocation: “He didn’t just suck cock, he crunched it!”
We laughed. “And how gay was Katharine Hepburn?”
“She loved one woman for 40 years who left her to marry a rich man,” he said. He claims to have arranged 150 get-togethers with women over five decades for Hepburn. That was his job — putting gay people together via a Hollywood gas station for rendezvous with movie stars,...

As far as creative-type biopics go, Genius is pretty harmless. John Logan’s screenplay (based on A. Scott Berg’s novelization) evokes the drawn-out, whimsical language of the late Thomas Wolfe’s vivacious energy, while Michael Grandage’s direction navigates a provocative, endearing time in American publication. Writers like Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway were charming socialites with their eloquent verbiage, but behind every best seller was a desk-chained editor, killing scribbled darlings without remorse.
This is certainly a story of passion – and a mind consumed by praise – but more importantly, Grandage pays homage to the lesser-known heroes (and often-thought villains) of authored content. Praise be to the oh-so-overlooked editors, as bastardized and under-appreciated as they might be!

Merle Oberon movies: Mysterious star of British and American cinema. Merle Oberon on TCM: Donning men's clothes in 'A Song to Remember,' fighting hiccups in 'That Uncertain Feeling' Merle Oberon is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month of March 2016. The good news: the exquisite (and mysterious) Oberon, whose ancestry has been a matter of conjecture for decades, makes any movie worth a look. The bad news: TCM isn't offering any Oberon premieres despite the fact that a number of the actress' films – e.g., Temptation, Night in Paradise, Pardon My French, Interval – can be tough to find. This evening, March 18, TCM will be showing six Merle Oberon movies released during the first half of the 1940s. Never a top box office draw in the United States, Oberon was an important international star all the same, having worked with many of the top actors and filmmakers of the studio era.

We’ve had a Capote biopic, we’ve had an Allen Ginsberg biopic. Heck, there’s even been a Charles Bukowski biopic. And while Thomas Wolfe might not be as well-known as other literary masterminds, that doesn’t mean his own tale of triumph isn’t worthy of a movie. The first trailer for Wolfe’s biopic Genius has now arrived, and it appears to be the first prestige movie of the year that’s aimed squarely at the awards season crowd.
Jude Law toplines the movie as Wolfe and Colin Firth joins him as editor Maxwell Perkins, the man responsible for discovering several well-known literary figures. It takes place in 1920s New York, and charts the relationship between the pair as Wolfe was in the midst of working on a lengthy tome. Premiering at Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year was Genius, a drama which focused on the working relationship between author Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law) and his editor, Max Perkins (Colin Firth). The screen debut of theater director Michael Grandage, John Logan‘s screenplay is adapted from A. Scott Berg‘s book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius, which also features such literary figures as Fitzgerald and Hemingway. Ahead of a summer release from Roadside Attractions, the first trailer has now arrived.
We said in our review, “Ultimately, Genius is more satisfying than many recent traditional biopics, and, oddly, by embracing caricature-like portrayals, the film is able to tap into its simple but humble pleasures. There’s no lengthy debate as to what defines genius nor conversation as to what that even means; there doesn’t have to be. Genius puts those words right up on screen and the case is made.

★☆☆☆☆ British theatre director Michael Grandage makes his cinematic debut with Genius, based on A. Scott Berg's Max Perkins: Editor of Genius and starring an excitable Jude Law as novelist Thomas Wolfe. With a screenplay written by Gladiator writer John Logan, Genius tells the story of how Scribner's Sons editor Max Perkins (Colin Firth) wrangled Wolfe's thousands of pages of manuscript into the novels Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time and the River. To establish that Perkins is a man of routine and family, we begin with the editor's journey home, through the New York streets, on the train, walking to his house, all while becoming engrossed in O Lost, Wolfe's lengthy manuscript that landed on his desk earlier that day.

“Genius,” which has just premiered in competition in Berlin, charts the extraordinarily creative but troubled — and ultimately tragic — relationship between one of America’s greatest writers, Thomas Wolfe, and the editor who steered his unwieldy talent towards the page, Maxwell Perkins. Based on Scott Berg’s acclaimed biography “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius,” the film offers a reminder that books don’t simply burst fully formed from the creative loins of a talented and unimpeachable scribe; not unlike films, they need editing, and as in cinema editing doesn’t just mean cutting, but shaping, honing, finessing; even though in Wolfe's case, cutting — a lot of cutting — was the chief task at hand. Perkins, whose other writers included F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, had to be at the height of his own powers to deal with Wolfe, from whom words gushed like a broken main. While the film atmospherically evokes...

Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

Another pick-up at the Cannes Film Festival for Lionsgate this morning was Michael Grandage's "Genius," which feels like awards bait given the subject matter and the talent involved. The film tells the story of Scribner book editor Max Perkins, who oversaw works by legends like Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald in his time. The script, based on the book by A. Scott Berg, was written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan ("Gladiator," "The Aviator," "Hugo"). Colin Firth stars in the film as Perkins and there's a roll call of stars playing those top literary names. Jude Law is in as Wolfe, Guy Pearce is Fitzgerald and Dominic West is Hemingway. Nicole Kidman also stars as costume designer Aline Bernstein, who had a four-year relationship with Wolfe and possessed some of his unpublished manuscripts at the time of his death. Laura Linney, meanwhile, plays Perkins' wife, Louise Saunders.

As always, March is too early to get any kind of firm grasp on what will or won't be an Oscar contender come the end of the year, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to speculate. Last year, only two of the nine films I predicted out of the gates actually ended up receiving Best Picture nominations at the 2015 Oscars -- Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel -- which goes to show just how much we know in advance. In fact, looking at the films I had on the outside looking in, only Best Picture winner Birdman was listed. But hey, at least I had three of the top contenders in the early year conversation, that's something... rightc When it comes to this year, I feel even less certain than I did last year. I'm not sure that's saying a whole lot since only two of the 43 films on...

Throughout her nearly six-decade show business career, Wright was featured in nearly 30 films, dozens of television series and made-for-tv movies, and a whole array of stage productions. On the big screen, she played opposite some of the most important stars of the '40s and '50s. It's a long list, including Bette Davis, Greer Garson, Gary Cooper, Myrna Loy, Ray Milland, Fredric March, Jean Simmons, Marlon Brando, Dana Andrews, Lew Ayres, Cornel Wilde, Robert Mitchum, Spencer Tracy, Joseph Cotten, and David Niven.
