“This is the purge, right?” Will Smith asked the crowd. “This is the cleanse, this is what happens. This is the natural reaction to the amount of light that came into the world when Barack Obama was the president.”
It was the day after Doug Jones’ stunning win in Alabama and Smith was in a Four Seasons conference room with Joel Edgerton and director David Ayer, promoting their Netflix film, “Bright.” Presumably in a nod to the film’s setting of dystopian Los Angeles, Netflix dressed down the Beverly Hills location with traffic cones, a rusty gate, and an upturned grocery cart.
While Smith never mentioned Jones or President Trump by name, he clearly had the current political climate in mind as he warmed to his subject. “We had to expect that [the pendulum] was going to go the other way,” he said. “As a cleanse — this is the darkness before the dawn.

The administrator of a GoFundMe drive that has collected nearly $60,000 for bullied child-turned-viral sensation Keaton Jones has halted the drive after Jones’ mother, Kimberly Jones, was accused of racism. Joseph Lam, the 37-year-old New Jersey man who initiated the campaign, said he didn’t know the family, but wanted to make sense of the situation and make sure everyone had Keaton’s interests at heart. He said he had heard from “a lot of people with concerns” about whether the mom was racist, but added: “I’m more concerned with the kid.” Also Read: Keaton Jones' Mom Accused of Racist Facebook Posts,...

New details have emerged about the alleged workplace sexual harassment by Disney/Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter, including evidence suggesting Disney knew of and worked around the misconduct. According to multiple sources who spoke anonymously to Deadline, the Pixar co-founder attended wrap parties with a handler “to ensure he would not engage in inappropriate conduct with women.”
Citing “missteps,” Lasseter announced last week that he would be taking a six-month “sabbatical” from his role: “I especially want to apologize to anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of an unwanted hug or any other gesture they felt crossed the line in any way, shape, or form. No matter how benign my intent, everyone has the right to set their own boundaries and have them respected.”

In October 2009, Kater Gordon’s writing career came to a sudden end. In the space of a year, she went from Matt Weiner’s personal assistant on “Mad Men” to his Emmy-winning co-writer of the season finale. Then, less than a month after standing next to Weiner on the Nokia Theatre stage, she was fired. Or, as a show insider put it: “Matt has reluctantly decided that their relationship has reached its full potential.” That awkward rationale highlighted the “Mad Men” narrative: It was Weiner’s show, and his whims were law.
“Mad Men” continued for six more critically lauded seasons as Gordon faded from the news cycle and from the industry. Now imagine that story in 2017, with Gordon coming forward with her sexual harassment accusations against Weiner. Her story would have legs; he would be forced to deal with the charges, Peak TV be damned. All of which suggests...

Rashida Jones and writing partner Will McCormack are setting the record straight regarding the reason they left screenwriting duties on “Toy Story 4.” In a story published by The Hollywood Reporter on November 21, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter was accused of misconduct by insiders at the company and Disney. One source told THR that Jones left “Toy Story 4” after Lasseter made an “unwanted advance.”

Jones and McCormack have refuted the allegation in a statement made to Entertainment Weekly. The writing duo, whose previous credits include “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” deny unwanted advances were ever made toward Jones, and instead they cite the unequal treatment of minority voices within Pixar as the reason they removed themselves from “Toy Story 4.”

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) is playing October 1 - 31, 2017 in the United States as part of the series Prelude to Halloween. For all of its social and cinematic influence, its current notoriety as the granddaddy of the contemporary zombie movie (and television show and comic book and videogame), George A. Romero’s 1968 debut, Night of the Living Dead, was a remarkably unassuming production. Shot in mid- through late-1967 on a budget of around $114,000, with a cast and crew of unknown actors and amateur locals, the film went on to accumulate an international gross of more than $30 million, setting the standard for a progressively popular horror sub-genre in the process. One now marvels at its systematic structure, its discerning formal design, its clever manipulation of time and space, and its shrewd exploitation of generic conventions.

Originally, Archie Andrews and his pals at Riverdale High reflected the codification of teenage life, as they had more leisure time and disposable income. Once it hit big, the comic series and its infinite number of spinoffs, became stuck in amber, barely trying to keep up with changing trends (other than fashion) or concerns for teens. By the 2000s, the entire company was on the ropes, increasingly irrelevant in a rapidly changing world.

Alex Jones may be “what ‘Friday Night Lights’ would’ve looked like if they’d given Coach Taylor a nasty Pcp habit,” according to John Oliver, but he’s also a lot more than that. On Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver responded to previous remarks he made about the “InfoWars” host. Jones said on his show that his comments were taken out of context so Oliver promised that they’ll provide as much context as possible. The segment focuses less on Jones’ alleged beliefs — such as that the Sandy Hook massacre was a government conspiracy — and more on what happens when.

There's a time and a place for everything—and as James Corden and Harry Styles proved on The Late Late Show, they have terrible timing. In a pre-taped sketch that aired Wednesday night, they played people whose unrelenting need to dance and sing had fatal consequences. The scene opened with Corden and Styles playing heart surgeons. Before he began, Corden said, "Guys, this is going to get a little tricky. I'm going to need everybody's full concentration." As he began to hum Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual," the music inside him swelled. Before they knew it, Corden and Styles were full on singing in the operating room—and their patient flat-lined. Reports of a romance between Sir Tom Jones and Priscilla Presley have been shot down by the rep for the 76-year-old singer.
Jones’ wife of 59 years, Melinda Rose Woodward – known as Linda – died at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles in April of last year after battling cancer. They had one son, Mark, who is Jones’ manager.
Rumors that Jones and the former wife of Elvis Presley were dating swirled after the pair were spotted together during an outing in Hollywood. When asked by The Sun about their dinner at Craig’s Eatery, Jones coyly said, “We have been friends for a long time.

Of all the comic book adaptations that have flooded film and television in recent years, perhaps none are as ambitious as Riverdale. The CW’s attempt to transport the family-friendly cast of Archie Comics into a dark and soapy teen drama could have been disastrous, but instead, it looks to be a very promising offering, calling to mind some of the network’s greatest hits, like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.
Here’s six reasons why you should set your DVR for Riverdale, and prepare yourselves for a new fave.
1. A Cast of New, New Hotties (like The O.C. blessed us with)
One of the greatest things a teen drama can do is introduce viewers to a whole new cast of nearly-unknown hotties to swoon over. This is why certain segments of the population still dream of Adam Brody as the ultimate boyfriend or give Jared Leto a pass for almost anything.

What leaps to mind whenever someone mentions Archie comics? Teenagers crammed into a jalopy, driving to the soda shop? A romantic rivalry between girl-next-door Betty and spoiled rich kid Veronica? Bubblegum pop hits like "Sugar, Sugar?" Jughead's stupid hat?
Or has no one mentioned the name "Archie Andrews" to you in years?
The creative team behind the CW's high school soap Riverdale hopes you remember just enough about the old comic books to be excited about seeing them radically reimagined. Backed by producer Greg Berlanti (who helps manage the network's DC Comics properties Supergirl,...

Viola Davis, John Goodman, Bryce Dallas Howard and more, in our rundown of 2016's underrated movie acting work.
This article contains minor spoilers for Pete's Dragon, Suicide Squad and Warcraft: The Beginning.
Nobody is likely to look back on 2016 fondly, whether because of global political instability, celebrity deaths or the rejection of Boaty McBoatface as a suitable name for a research vessel. In the world of film, we note that a lot of the contenders in this year's awards season haven't even been released in UK cinemas yet, and it was hardly a banner year for blockbuster cinema either.
On the plus side, there were some exemplary smaller films, of the kind that awards bodies tend to overlook, released in the last 12 months. Without any apparent genre contenders, like The Martian or Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, this is a year in which performers are more likely...

Stephen Colbert enlisted Norah Jones and Jon Batiste to help him debut a maddening, so-bad-it's-good holiday tune titled "Christmas Is Now" on The Late Show Monday.
As Colbert explained, the song was written to bump Paul McCartney and Wings' "Wonderful Christmas Time" from the top spot of "worst Christmas songs of all time." True to his promise, Colbert, in an ugly knit sweater, began beating the song into ears, brains and hearts everywhere as he harmonized with Batiste, "Christmas is now, Christmas is now/ Now it is Christmas and Christmas is now.

Norah Jones chronicled a tale of musical dreams and disappointments with her gorgeous cover of Neil Young's "Don't Be Denied" on The Late Late Show With James Corden Monday.
Jones flips Young's ragged, autobiographical tune into a shuffling piano ballad about a woman from a broken home who finds solace in music and eventually hollowness in success. Jones delivers the song's aching final verse with a brutal delicacy as her band swoops in with stunning harmonies: "She's a pauper in a naked disguise/ Millionaire through a businessman's eyes/ Oh...

The Man from Mo’Wax is a very strange music documentary. Most films of this ilk are glowing accounts of an individual or band’s inexorable rise to the top of the charts, demonstrating their musical virtuosity, inherent genius and the growing adoration of their fans. Here that curve is inverted, director Matthew Jones painstakingly dissecting a person with next to no discernible musical talent as his career crashes and burns.
That person is producer and DJ James Lavelle – hardly a household name – yet kind of an icon to dance music aficionados. His career spans three distinct periods: the first is that of a musically teenage wunderkind who sets up his own cooler than cool record label, Mo’Wax Records. The second is as creative leader of Unkle, where he collaborated with various musical legends to create a series of increasingly poorly received and badly selling albums. The third follows...

In the grand scheme of 2016’s mainstream horror scene, Ouija: Origin Of Evil certainly bolsters the argument that we’re having one hell of a year – even if it’s not at the top. Director Mike Flanagan does what he does best by summoning a comfortable (unnerving), safe (tormenting) haunter that’s certainly better than Hasbro’s previous occult killer, but that doesn’t stop a familiar sense of “I’ve seen this before” from seeping in. You’ll scream at telegraphed scares, indulge in grainy 60s chic and learn where the evil began (all you rabid Ouija fans, wherever you are). Maybe just tone down the cheap jumps next time? Like, well below 11?
Flanagan’s prequel to last year’s Ouija introduces viewers to the famous board game’s promised curse. Another dopey family (the Zanders) ignores ominous warnings included with their Ouija game, and their daughter Doris (Lulu Wilson) pays the price.

Did fantasy dramas Chocky, The Box Of Delights and Dramarama leave an impression on you as a kid? Revisit those nightmares here...
Spooky, always magical and occasionally downright scary dramas are the bedrock of kids' television. For me, the pinnacle of this sort of programme was reached in the 1980s. The decade saw a new approach to both traditional and contemporary drama by both UK broadcasters: ITV committed itself to regular seasons of children's plays with Dramarama (1983-89), a kind of youth version of the venerable BBC Play For Today (1970-84), which saw the 1988 television debut of one David Tennant. The BBC, building upon an impressive body of work from the early 70s onwards, produced some of its very best family drama in this era, embracing cutting edge technology to bring treats like The Box Of Delights (1984) and The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (1988) to the screen.

3.7 Fool's Gold
Following last week’s Death Of A Hero was always going to be a tough ask.
It’s interesting to see down which route The Musketeers went – keep up and maintain the pressure until the end, or have a breather and then go all-out for the remaining three episodes. Certainly, Fool's Gold went for the latter course (presuming that the last three episodes do indeed go hell for leather!), but that’s not to say that this is lesser Musketeers – in fact it’s a highly enjoyable episode whose place in the series seems perfectly right. I’m sure not all of you will agree, as the momentum from last week was significant, but I have my reasons…

The CW is really bringing out the big guns for Supergirl. Set for its big move to the network from CBS this fall, the series will officially introduce Kara Danvers' (Melissa Benoist's) famous cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to the series right out of the gate in the first two episodes of the season. But that's not all! Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, will join the cast as the President of the United States. Not since Battlestar Galactica's Laura Roslin have we been this excited for a commander in chief. Carter is locked for multiple episodes and will first appear in episode three. So one smooth move from Superman to Wonder Woman. Carter was crowned Miss World America in 1972 and most famously played Wonder Woman from 1975-1979 in the now iconic television series. Supergirl has been known to bring in actors who've played superheroes previously as a tip of the hat to fans,...
