Jordan Peele is dusting off his ten-gallon hat and sharpening his spurs for a potentially powerful docuseries about Black cowboys of the Wild West. Peele’s goal with his new project is to change the public perception of the Old West and the people who contributed to its identity. The docuseries is getting set up at Peacock, with Peele executive producing. Reports say the project aims to “dismantle the whitewashed mythology of the cowboy” and elaborate on themes featured in Peele’s 2022 invasion thriller Nope.
Peele is teaming up with By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem’s Keith McQuirter, who joins the untitled Black cowboy docuseries as showrunner and executive producer.
Here’s the official description for Jordan Peele’s Black cowboy docuseries:

Jeymes Samuel’s biblical epic was slated to be released tomorrow (19th January), but the film has disappeared from the UK release schedule.
Jeymes Samuel’s biblical dramedy The Book Of Clarence has been quietly removed from the UK release calendar – mere hours before it was supposed to appear in cinemas. The film was originally slated to come out tomorrow, 19th January.
Samuel’s film received its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival last October. Reviews were lukewarm, but all of its promotional materials mentioned that aforementioned release date.
Deadline also reports that Sony and Legendary, which apparently requested the move, are now planning a March release for the film instead.
The Book Of Clarence stars Lakeith Stanfield as the titular character, who tries to capitalise on the rise of Jesus Christ and fakes being a Messiah, spinning an impressive web of lies.

Exclusive: The Book of Clarence, the Legendary and Jay Z-produced adventure-comedy, won’t be released in UK cinemas this week as planned.
The biblical epic has quietly dropped off the UK release schedule at the eleventh hour after initially being lined up for a January 19 release by Sony. UK exhibitors were set for a January 19 launch — the film has been listed on multiple cinema sites as opening this week — and marketing materials were deployed with a January 19 listing.
We understand a March release is now more likely. Sony is handling UK distribution, but we understand the decision to push back the release came from Legendary, which produced and financed the film.
News of the calendar switch comes after the pic recently opened stateside, taking just $3M over the 4-day MLK Jr. holiday weekend, giving the film a ninth-place debut on the charts. We hear that a later UK date...

In The Book of Clarence, Jeymes Samuel applies his jocular style — anachronistic music, rapid-fire banter and winking asides — to a Biblical epic that ends up strangely self-conscious when it comes to its comic ambitions. The director’s latest venture whisks audiences off to ancient Jerusalem, where locals grumble about the Romans and circulate news of a Messiah. Rumor has it he calls himself the son of God (something about an Immaculate Conception) and can turn water into wine. He leads a flock of apostles, 12 men devoted to spreading his gospel (they believe all men are born equal). Few people have seen this Jesus, but his existence excites them.
Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield), a peddler whose cocksure attitude shrouds the softer parts of his heart, doesn’t buy it. The claims made on behalf of Jesus are strong. (Walking on water? Really?) God doesn’t exist and you can’t raise the dead,...

The Book of Clarence: New trailer shows how far Clarence is willing to go to prove he’s not a nobody
The new trailer for The Book of Clarence has been released. While the previous trailer showcased a soulful, satirical tone, this new one brings the gladiator action as Clarence is now shown to be confronted by James McAvoy’s Roman character, who proposes a challenge for our blasphemous character.
The outrageous mind of Jeymes Samuel, who last brought us Netflix‘s The Harder They Fall, is tackling complex themes in his new biblical satire from TriStar Pictures and Legendary. The Book of Clarence sees Lakeith Stanfield doing the unthinkable — posing as humanity’s next lord and savior. Stanfield is joined by an all-star cast that features the acting talents of Omar Sy, Rj Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Additionally, the cast also includes Caleb McLaughlin, Babs Olusanmokun, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Nicholas Pinnock, Micheal Ward, Chase Dillon, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

It’s now been well over a month since the summer premiere of Disney’s new Haunted Mansion movie in theaters, which opened to just $24 million domestically back in late July.
How has the movie been performing in the weeks since, you might be wondering?
As we inch closer to the Halloween season, Haunted Mansion has now managed to scare up $100 million worldwide, with $64 million of that total made here in the United States.
Unfortunately, the problem with Haunted Mansion is that Disney spent more than $100 million on the film’s production budget alone – and that’s not counting a big marketing spend.
According to Wikipedia, the film’s reported production budget was around $150 million, which means Haunted Mansion will definitely not be profitable in theaters.
Disney is likely hoping the film will drive Disney+ subscribers this Halloween season, but at this time we haven’t yet been provided with...

Directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People), this disappointing comedy-horror is Disney’s second attempt at turning their popular theme park attraction into a movie franchise, following the disastrous 2003 Eddie Murphy vehicle. With a shorter, snappier running time, it could have been a fun ride – much like the attraction itself – but instead it’s a bloated, painfully dull and wildly uneven mess that quickly outstays its welcome, despite the efforts of its talented comic cast.
The film gets off to a bad start with a confusing jump from a meet-cute between astrophysicist Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) and haunted house tour guide (Charity Jordan) to a period some years later, where he is both an alcoholic and a haunted house tour guide operator himself,...

[This story contains spoilers for Haunted Mansion.]
Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien wanted to make a Disney movie that wasn’t afraid to challenge younger audiences in the same way that the Disney classics of his youth did. From Bambi’s Mother’s death in Bambi (1942) to Scar murdering Mufasa in The Lion King (1994), Disney has never shied away from heavier subject matters and themes, but in the case of the Haunted Mansion, there was one line that Simien just could not cross.
The lead of Simien’s film is Lakeith Stanfield’s Ben, a former astrophysicist turned paranormal tour guide in New Orleans. Ben’s life hasn’t been the same since his wife, Alyssa (Charity Jordan), died in a car accident, and so the character was originally slated for a rather devastating ending, as opposed to the more upbeat version that’s in theaters now.
“Once we cast Lakeith, there was something that...

Gilford’s design entry point for the film was a bible devoted to the ride from Imagineering. “I got to know what was canon for Disney,” he says. “We really tried to be as true as we could to the original Haunted Mansion from Disneyland. It was going to be heavily based on all the icons from the ride.”
The film stars Lakeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Tiffany Hadish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson as the crew who try to rid a stately old home in New Orleans of its 999 ghosts. But the exterior of Gracey Mansion was actually built on a backlot in Atlanta.

Instead of waiting for the fast-approaching Halloween season, Disney decided to position their new Haunted Mansion movie as a summer blockbuster, and that may have proven to be a massive mistake on their part. Here in the United States, the film found itself in the #3 spot on the box office charts this weekend, scaring up $24.2 million in 3,740 theaters.
Worldwide, the film’s opening weekend total was $33.3 million.
These numbers may not seem all that bad until you realize that Haunted Mansion‘s production budget was reportedly $150 million, and that’s not even factoring in the massive marketing spend attached to the movie. The general rule of thumb is that big studio movies need to earn roughly 2.5/3x their production budget before they start seeing profits, and it’s unlikely that Haunted Mansion is going to reach that point in theaters. Disney is likely looking to bring the film home to Disney+ for Halloween,...

Gather 'round, ghostly fans, and prepare to be spirited away to the bayous of Louisiana with Disney's latest spooktacular adventure, Haunted Mansion. Directed by Justin Simien, the film is a delightful romp through the iconic Disney Land Haunted Mansion ride, capturing the essence of the attraction with a blend of humor, heart, and just a touch of horror.
“…captur[es] the essence of the attraction with a blend of humor, heart, and just a touch of horror.”
The story follows Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield), an astrophysicist mourning his late wife, and Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), a single mother who moves into the haunted Gracey Manor with her son Travis (Chase W. Dillon). Together with a quirky cast of characters, they embark on a mission to exorcise the mansion's ghostly inhabitants. It's a plot that's as winding as the mansion's corridors, filled with fun homages to elements of the ride and deep-cut history for super fans.

Barbie really is a pink unicorn.
The movie is on course to earn $95 million or more in its sophomore outing, one of the best second weekends of all time at the North American box office, and the best second weekend gross ever for Warner Bros., not adjusted for inflation. That includes a $29 million Friday.
The female-fueled Barbie, which continues to shatter any and all expectations, should finish Sunday with a domestic cume of around $350 million. Detractors had predicted it would fade away quickly after a history-making debut over the July 21-23 weekend, but that isn’t the case. Barbie is looking at a scant decline of 41 percent, a rare hold for a pic originally opening to such a big number.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion has officially materialized in theaters nationwide, unleashing 999 grim grinning ghosts upon audiences.
Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) directed the new live-action adaptation of the famous, long-running Disney theme park attraction from the screenplay by Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters, “Parks and Recreation”).
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Simien for the film’s release about capturing the unique tone of the dark ride and what stars Lakeith Stanfield and Chase Dillon brought to the production.
The family-friendly feature emphasizes humor, but Haunted Mansion doesn’t shy away from inducing frights or tugging at the heartstrings.
Simien took the gateway scares seriously, stemming from his lifelong love of horror that began in childhood. The director’s origins with horror give insight into his approach to crafting gateway scares that don’t talk down to the film’s younger audience.
“One of my core memories is watching Nightmare on Elm Street at five years old.

And the Summer of product adaptations and remakes continues! Last weekend Barbie just about blew the doors off the box office and the multiplex in a virtual tsunami of pink perfection. Hey, if a toy can revive the ticket sale doldrums, why not a flick based on a ride from the Disney theme parks? After all, those Caribbean Pirates spurred quite a profitable “tentpole” for the studio. But then there were costly flops like Tomorrowland and who remembers The Country Bears (maybe they just needed that “nose candy”). Well, this concept was exploited nearly twenty years ago, so this is also, technically, a remake (without any of the main human characters from the first time). Perhaps the modest success of the other remake a few months ago, The Little Mermaid, is lifting the “ahem” spirits of the mouse house. So, even though Halloween is months away, are filmgoers in the...

Kevin Smith returned to Quick Stop Groceries with Clerks III last year, which brought back a lot of characters from the View Askewniverse. Rosario Dawson returned as Becky Scott, but a tragic twist meant that her character died in between the two Clerks movies. While speaking with THR, Rosario Dawson revealed her reaction to Becky’s fate in Clerks III.
“When Kevin first asked me about Clerks III, I thought we were going to do a Force Ghost Becky, but we didn’t have the budget for that,” Rosario Dawson explained. “But I’m just so grateful that we have Kevin still. He had a widowmaker heart attack, and we could have lost him. He had a previous Clerks III script that I never got a chance to read, so I have no idea what her fate was in that one. As the star of two high-profile Disney projects within a matter of weeks, Rosario Dawson is grateful to be spending her summer in the Magic Kingdom.
First up is writer Katie Dippold and director Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion, which turns Disneyland’s beloved attraction into a supernatural horror-comedy that tackles grief and loss in an accessible and relatable way. Dawson plays Gabbie, a single mother who’s acquired the titular mansion in order to turn it into a bed and breakfast, all so that her son (Chase Dillon’s Travis) can become more adept at social situations. However, she quickly realizes that she’s going to need a team of eccentric characters to help remedy the ghost-filled mansion that she bought sight unseen.

Disney's newest attempt at turning a theme park ride into a feature film has arrived with the silly spook-fest with a heart of gold, "Haunted Mansion." Fans need no reminder that the beloved attraction made its name on the strength of humor, scares, and a unique approach to the classic haunted house setup that took full advantage of what Disney does best. After the 2003 Eddie Murphy-starring film came and went (though not before inspiring a bit of a cult following over the intervening years), all eyes were trained on director Justin Simien and his star-studded take on the beloved IP.
The basic structure isn't too far afield from what audiences might expect: a grieving widower named Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) has given up on his astrophysicist passions and his dabbles in the supernatural, turning into an avowed skeptic with absolutely no patience for the ghost-obsessives around him in New Orleans.

The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland may be my favorite attraction at the park. And yes, I’d appreciate a fun movie that brings the ride’s charm to the big screen (read our review). No, that was not the 2003 version. However, the latest feature bringing the “hitchhiking ghosts” to theatres was a good time, with a bit of heart. Justin Simien’s take on Haunted Mansion is an entertaining feature. It’s cute, it’s funny, and some of the ghostly visions are even a little spooky.
A few weeks back, we spoke with Justin about the new film. It’s been a long while since I’d talked to Mr. Simien, and it was terrific to see him again. The filmmaker talked about taking on the film and the many levels of the world-famous attraction that ended up in the movie. We also delved into the performances of Lakeith Stanfield...

Review: Disney’s Haunted Mansion is another attempt to build a franchise out of one of their most famous rides. Heck, it worked pretty damn well for Pirates of the Caribbean and – to a certain extent – for Jungle Cruise. Of course, this isn’t the first Haunted Mansion flick, with Eddie Murphy leading a comedy version in 2003. This movie, from Justin Simien, is more serious than the Murphy version, aiming to deliver some legit thrills and chills, although it still has a reasonably comic vibe. Like many other Disney movies lately, it’s decent enough, even if it lacks the attitude to make an impact, as there’s nothing here you haven’t seen before.

Disney’s interest in making films based on its theme park attractions stretches back to 1997 and the now-forgotten Wonderful World of Disney TV movie, Tower of Terror. Since then offerings like Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland, and of course the one time it worked, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, have all made it to the screen with varying degrees of success. And with each outing, filmmakers have tried to impose traditional narratives on experiences that are more sensory and immersive than story-driven.
Still, one of the most enduring attractions at many of the Disney parks, the Haunted Mansion, would seem to be a natural for a cinematic adaptation. However, the first attempt in 2003, which starred Eddie Murphy and directed by Rob Minkoff, was a critical disaster and only a tepid box office performer (it’s since gotten somewhat of a reassessment). Still, Disney is always one to try and try again.

Maybe it’s the cumulative effect of watching so much top-notch talent being wasted. Or the woozy sensation of being subjected to two hours of cut-rate CGI effects apparently purchased in a bulk deal. Or the blatant product placement for Burger King jalapeño poppers. Or the in-joke nod to Beetlejuice, a comparative reference which does this movie zero favors. But there will inevitably be something about Haunted Mansion, Disney’s latest attempt to spin amusement park memories into box-office gold, that qualifies as a dealbreaker. A corporate I.P. Easter-egg hunt posing as a movie,...

Disney’s Haunted Mansion seeks to course correct from its looser adaptation of the famous theme park dark ride in 2003 with a new, much more faithful feature-length adaptation. That’s a tall order considering the original attraction opened in 1969, amassing decades’ worth of lore and history within its hallowed, spooky walls. Yet director Justin Simien and writer Katie Dippold carefully thread 999 happy haunts into a cohesive but densely packed storyline that brings every bit of the grim grinning ghost funhouse antics, mythology, and details you’d expect. But it’s Simien and Dippold’s poignant approach to grief and death that solidifies their Haunted Mansion as worthwhile gateway horror for a new generation.
Once a promising young scientist, Ben (Lakeith Stanfield) now drinks his life away when not leading ghost tours in New Orleans. Ben’s deep in the throes of grief, trapped at a crossroads after his beloved wife’s passing.

For a few years there back in the early ’80s, Disney took a turn to the dark side, releasing live-action movies like “The Watcher in the Woods” (featuring a creepy late-career Bette Davis) and “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (from the mind of Ray Bradbury) that were intense enough to inspire nightmares — in kids, at least. The youngsters of that time are now parents, and some are surely asking themselves how far they can trust Disney not to traumatize another generation when a movie like “Haunted Mansion” comes along.
Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) leans more on comedy than horror, bringing together a handful of funny stars to deal with Gracey Manor’s ghost problem. That a movie about a haunted mansion, literally titled "Haunted Mansion," manages to be creepy should not be surprising. Considering what the title portends, such a movie ought to be creepy. But for a Disney movie in the year of Our Lord 2023 to be creepy seems kind of unexpected. Though Disney has long since embarked into the world of PG-13 movies -- starting in earnest with their 2003 smash hit "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" -- they've largely backed away in the last few years from doing anything that might put a scare in kids. In 2003, audiences watched Eddie Murphy drop into “Haunted Mansion” in Rob Minkoff’s poorly received riff on Disney’s famous ride. Now 20 years later, Justin Simien, director of “Dear White People” and a former Disneyland ride operator, is trying his hand at putting the “grim, grinning ghosts” of the popular theme park attraction on the big screen — and the results are impressive.
Simien’s “Haunted Mansion” is a wondrous blend of horror and comedy, tinged with emotional resonance in its story of grief and how we try to connect with those we’ve lost. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Lakeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”) and a solid ensemble, “Haunted Mansion” is a worthy take on the ride and a sleeper hit for families looking to find a fun summer film.

Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion, with the bright purple and radiant turquoise vapor trails of whatever smoke machine was used during production, handily invokes the campiness of the iconic Disneyland attraction, if not its kinetics. But while several set pieces move along with surprising alacrity and humor, Katie Dippold’s script drowns in exposition and lore-building, at times drawing distracting comparison to her work on the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.

It’s the final week of July and two more new horror movies are headed onto the big screen this weekend. They’ll have to compete with the #Barbenheimer phenomenon, but both new horror releases look to bring very different counter programming to the box office. One is the next rated “R” fright fest from A24, while the other is a horror-comedy built for families.
Here’s all the new horror releasing July 25– July 30, 2023!
For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.
First up, a tragedy leads two dysfunctional families to intertwine in disturbing ways in Screambox Exclusive Repulse, now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered platform.
The bleak, brutal Czech film harkens back to boundary-pushing horror like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.
In the film, Kateřina and Robert raise their young daughter in a luxurious modern villa, but their family life can hardly be called harmonious.

Rosario Dawson reflected on her time filming Disney’s live-action Haunted Mansion on location with Jamie Lee Curtis and the rest of its A-list cast.
“Jamie, you know, me and Tiffany [Haddish] were definitely besides ourselves being around [her],” Dawson told People magazine, adding that starring alongside the Oscar winner was part of “the beauty of” making the project.
Filming on location in New Orleans allowed the cast, which also includes Lakeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Dan Levy, Jared Leto, Winona Ryder and Hasan Minhaj, to bond throughout production even when they weren’t on set.
“It was really beautiful how [director Justin Simien] kind of brought us together and gave us all crystals, and we were reading the script together and just creating these nice moments,” Dawson continued. “Tiffany would have these house parties where she would be getting her nails and her henna done, and [DeVito] would come over with Jeff [Kurland], our costumer.

The summer movie season still has a few big titles left to try and get moviegoers out en masse. Disney has one biggie left before we head to fall in the form of "Haunted Mansion," a big-budget, live-action adaptation of the beloved theme park attraction. This is, notably, not the first time that the ride has been adapted, with Eddie Murphy headlining a film based on it 20 years ago. But this time, Disney pulled out all the stops, assembling an A-list cast and spending quite a bit of money to bring it to life. The question is, will it prove to be money well spent? If current box office tracking is to be believed, it most definitely will not be.
Before diving in, I should note that, as of this writing, official box office tracking numbers have not been revealed for "Haunted Mansion." Given the release is a week away,...
