James Cameron explores in detail how the Titanic sunk in his 1997 ultra-blockbuster "Titanic." It sideswiped an iceberg on its starboard side, tearing a hole in the hull. The ship began taking on water and the bow began to sink, lifting the stern into the air. The entire ship cracked in half like a Twix bar. The front half continued to sink, shooting to the ocean floor. The stern stuck was next to go, and -- because it was already half-submerged -- stuck straight up out of the water, almost vertically, like a tower. It, too, then slid beneath the waves. It took about two hours and 40 minutes for the ship to sink entirely.
Cameron compresses that sinking time into about an hour of film, careful to dramatize every detail of the ship's final moments. In the final phase of the ship's sinking -- when the stern was standing like a...

Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger will star on Broadway this spring in a world premiere production of Paula Vogel’s new Mother Play, to be directed by Tina Landau.
The Second Stage Theater production will begin a limited engagement at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater on Wednesday, April 3, with an official opening on Thursday, April 25.
Mother Play by Pulitzer Prize winner Vogel (How I Learned to Drive) is described by Second Stage as “a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.”
The synopsis: “It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path.

Samuel L. Jackson told The Times last year that he deserved to win the Oscar for best supporting actor over Martin Landau (“Ed Wood”) at the 1995 Academy Awards. In a new interview with Vulture, the actor said he was robbed of a second chance to win an Oscar just a couple years later with Joel Schumacher’s 1996 legal drama “A Time to Kill,” co-starring Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. The John Grisham adaptation starred Jackson as a man on trial in Mississippi for killing the two men who raped his daughter.
“In ‘A Time to Kill,’ when I kill those guys, I kill them because my daughter needs to know that those guys are not on the planet anymore and they will never hurt her again — that I will do anything to protect her,” Jackson said. “That’s how I played that character throughout. When James Cameron’s fifth “Avatar” movie opens in theaters in 2031, Zoe Saldaña will end a whopping 26-year journey playing the Na’vi warrior and devoted mother Neytiri. How’s that for character longevity? Disney announced June 13 that Cameron’s three upcoming “Avatar” sequels have been pushed back on the release calendar yet again, extending the franchise into 2031.
“Great! I’m gonna be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ comes out,” Saldaña humorously posted on her Instagram alongside a shocked face emoji. “I was 27 when I shot the very first ‘Avatar.'”
Saldaña’s co-star Sam Worthington, who stars as Jake Sully in the franchise, will be 55 years old when the final “Avatar” movie hits theaters. Cameron will be 77 years old.

Producer Jon Landau has been a close collaborator with director James Cameron for over 20 years now, going back to the time they brought the mammoth "Titanic" to the screen -- literally and figuratively. When Cameron decided to embark on an even more gigantic project in the form of the world-building, fully immersive "Avatar" films, Landau became his right-hand man, helping guide and shape the project since the mid-'90s.

James Cameron is aiming to be king of Blu-ray and 4K, as word has emerged from the abyss that some of the director’s most iconic movies in his canon will be getting updated home video releases sometime this year.
The Digital Bits founder and editor-in-chief Bill Hunt had the chance to talk to producer Jon Landau about upcoming Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD releases of some of James Cameron’s greatest movies: The Abyss (1989), True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), and the first Avatar (2009). As Hunt rattled off these titles, Landau replied, “2023, baby!…I would bet [they] would be [released]…But I don’t know if Disney wants me saying that yet,” followed by a laugh. You can watch the video below:

The Oscars don’t typically award bad acting performances. The worst of cinematic crime scenes feature talented stars trying to salvage what they can, from Viola Davis making the most out of The Help, to Colin Firth acting his royal socks off in The King’s Speech.
In truth, the Oscars tend to be more confusing than they are outright offensive. Many actors seem to win for the wrong performances (does anyone think Still Alice is Julianne Moore’s best work?), while interesting performances in provocative movies tend to be overlooked in favour of awarding more traditional Oscar bait.
It means that it’s far easier to curate a list of the most “what the hell?” wins than it is the truly bad ones. These are times when the victor seemed much less deserving than their fellow nominees, or when a juicy Oscar narrative overpowered the performance itself: Who hadn’t won in a while?...

Twenty-five years after winning the best picture Oscar for Titanic — and 12 years after his second best picture nomination, for Avatar — producer Jon Landau is back in the awards race with Avatar: The Way of Water. Days before James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water splashed its way past his 1997 film, Titanic, on the global box office charts to become the No. 3 movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation), the filmmaker took a seat on the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank to do something he said he’s never done.
Cameron joined longtime producing partner Jon Landau for an Avatar 2 screening filled with fans that had seen the film once or multiple times. (One man admitted to being a superfan who had seen the 3-hour and 12-minute film a whopping seven times.) The purpose of the Feb. 16 event — presented by 20th Century Studios and Fandango — was for the pair to field feedback directly from an audience that Cameron said will help shape the rest of the franchise.

It’ll be good rockin’ tonight at HBO Max this awards season, as the streaming platform is ready to unleash lots of Elvis Presley as the Oscars approach. On Wednesday, March 1, they’ll be dropping Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” two documentaries, two concert films and three of Elvis’ movies on the streaming site for a two-week period. Those two weeks begin on the eve of final Oscar voting and run through the Academy Awards show itself, where “Elvis” is nominated in eight categories, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler.
In honor of those eight nominations – and to give voters a boost if they’re considering the film, Butler, cinematography Mandy Walker, production and costume designer Catherine Martin or any other “Elvis” nominees – HBO Max has chosen eight different Elvis Presley projects, from movies featuring him to documentaries and a feature about him. James Cameron's romantic, tragic masterpiece "Titanic" hit theaters 25 years ago, but aspects of the film's production still manage to amaze viewers today. To bring the story of the doomed Rms Titanic to life, Cameron reportedly spent 40 million (per MovieWeb) building a massive replica of the boat, which is more than five times the price tag on the real ship that set sail for just one voyage in 1912.
While stories from behind the scenes of "Titanic" abound, the making of the epic seems to have been so jam-packed with creative filmmaking techniques that some of the most impressive details of the production are all but forgotten these days. For instance: did you know the "Titanic" crew actually built just half of the boat to scale in order to cut costs? It's a clever decision, but one that resulted in some trippy problems when it came time to film the scene...

(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
Legend has it that before James Cameron wrote a single word of his "Titanic" script, he got his hands on a Ken Marschall painting of the original ship, slapped it down before the producers at 20th Century Fox, and made his pitch with six simple words: "'Romeo and Juliet' on that ship." Needless to say, James Cameron is a man with a vision.
The king of spectacle blockbusters knows a thing or two about money well spent and has the success stories to prove it: thanks to "Avatar: The Way of Water," Cameron has now helmed three of the highest-grossing films in history, the other two being 2009's "Avatar" and, of course, "Titanic" itself. Five and a half years ago, it was announced that Oona Chaplin – who is best known for playing Talisa Maegyr on Game of Thrones, and for being the granddaughter of the legendary Charlie Chaplin – had been cast in James Cameron’s Avatar sequels. And now, thanks to producer Jon Landau, we finally know who Chaplin will be playing. Last month, Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 will introduce a villainous tribe of Na’vi known as the Ash People, and speaking with Empire (with thanks to Variety for passing it along), Landau gave the information that Chaplin’s character is the leader of this “aggressive, volcanic race” known as the Ash People. Her character’s name is Varang.

As “Avatar: The Way of Water” continues to dominate the worldwide box office (it’s currently the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time with 2.13 billion), the future of James Cameron’s Na’vi franchise is coming into clearer focus. Cameron has already shot “Avatar 3” and parts of “Avatar 4,” and “The Way of Water” has performed strong enough that “Avatar 5” is likely to move forward as well.
In a new interview with Empire magazine, “Avatar” producer Jon Landau dropped some new details about what fans can expect from the next three sequels. Cameron had teased that “Avatar 3” would introduce a more antagonistic race of Na’vi. Landau said that group is the Ash People, described by Empire as “an aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi whose leader is Varang, played by “Game of Thrones” alum and Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin.

James Cameron is, after all this time, the unquestioned king of blockbuster cinema. Between "Aliens," "Terminator," and "Titanic," the man has kind of done it all. But his biggest achievement and right to wear the crown all stems from his 2009 sci-fi mega-hit "Avatar," which remains the highest-grossing movie of all time. Now, some 13 years later, we're about to see if he can do it again with the long-awaited sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water." The big difference? It's Disney releasing the sequel this time around, whereas Fox released the original. But thanks to the Disney/Fox merger in 2019, that's all changed. Though, in another near-to-us universe, Disney made the first "Avatar" rather than Fox.

It’s no surprise that the sequel to Avatar is going to have mind-blowing visuals, but when the script for Avatar: The Way of Water was complete, even the movie’s producer had doubts about their ability to film it.
“When we first started developing the script, we really tried to do it without thinking about the ‘how,’ right?” says Jon Landau, the producer of Avatar and its sequels, in an interview with Den of Geek magazine.
Once the script was done, Landau’s reaction was, “Oh my gosh, how do we do this?”
In case the scope of that project wasn’t enough, the crew wasn’t just shooting one Avatar sequel but two whole movies and the first act of the fourth one. It was an epic undertaking, but combining the shoot across nearly...

Way back in 2006, James Cameron was working on a mysterious movie called "Project 880." In an interview with MTV, he announced that the mystery film was to be called "Avatar," and that he was hard at work on a whole sextet of feature films that were in various states of pre-production. He was to make this new "Avatar" movie, then move on to "Battle Angel," an adaptation of a manga he was fond of. Each one of these films was to spawn at least two sequels. The original idea was for Cameron to make multiple sequels back-to-back for each project. Shortly after "Avatar" was released (and immediately caused a sensation), Cameron was still talking about how a sequel was in the works.
Years passed and there was no "Avatar" sequel. Cameron would occasionally release small pieces of information as to its status. In 2011, he said he wanted "Avatar 2" to...

Most of the first act of “Avatar 4” has been completed and most of the film has been designed, producer Jon Landau revealed at a press conference during the Busan International Film Festival on Thursday.
“We’ve completed most of the first act of ‘Avatar 4’ and there were logistical reasons why we needed to do that,” Landau said in response to a question from Variety. “We’ve designed most of the whole movie for ‘Avatar 4’ but we haven’t actually filmed all of it – just the first act.”
Landau addressed the media after showcasing 15 minutes of footage from “Avatar: The Way of Water” at a sold-out event at the festival, during which he talked up the cutting-edge technology used in the film. Director James Cameron appeared via video link at the event and discussed the film’s underlying ecological message and also talked about the film’s high-frame rate projection.

Democratic campaign manager Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) made his debut on “The Good Fight” on Paramount+ over the last two episodes of Season 6, visiting Chicago to deal with tricky legal troubles brought about by a right-wing prosecutor attempting to call him out for interference in the 2020 election. While he was in town, he attended a fundraiser for the Dems, and was nearly killed when a man burst out of a bathroom stall at the event, shouting an anti-Jewish epithet and shooting Frank Landau, who the man had mistaken for Gold. But that wasn’t the original version of the story from showrunners Robert and Michelle King, according to Cumming.
“The original plan was even darker. … Eli was going to die,” Cumming said, noting he signed on to do two episodes with Eli dying in the second.
“They’re such great writers, I was really fascinated to see how they would kill him,...
