Today being international jazz day, there will be much celebrating of the greatness of its history. I’ve done that in the past; it is a great history. But it is not all back in historical times; jazz lives, and evolves, and continues to be great. Yet how many lists of the greatest jazz albums include anything from the current century?
That they do not is no indictment of them; only sixteen percent of the years when recorded jazz has existed (not counting the present year yet) are in the twenty-first century, after all, and some prefer to bestow the label of greatness after more perspective has been achieved than sixteen (or fewer, for newer releases) years.
Nonetheless, if people are to respect jazz as a living art form, a look back at the best of its more recent releases seems worthwhile. Here’s one man’s “baker’s dozen...

For those of you who need to hear it straight from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner‘s mouth: Don (and not Peggy) wrote the Coke ad.
“The idea that some enlightened state, and not just co-option, might’ve created something that is very pure” was an attractive way to end the series, Weiner said. “To me, it’s the best ad ever made, and it comes from a very good place.”
The assertion was one of the highlights of a public conversation Weiner had with A.M. Holmes (The L Word) at the New York Public Library on Wednesday evening,...

The messed-up machinations of bored, oversexed stepsiblings Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont aren’t quite as shocking in 2014 as they were when Cruel Intentions was released on March 5, 1999. (Blame Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and a zillion other glitzy/scandalous imitators.)
That said, Cruel Intentions is still an enormously entertaining teen movie, even 15 years (gulp) after its initial release — thanks to an uncommonly sharp script, a killer soundtrack, and, most importantly, an impeccable cast, which featured future Oscar winners and future Sharknado stars alike. Well, one of each, but you get the picture. Whoever headed up this franchise had a...

While the actors who portray our favorite characters get the majority of fan adoration, more and more, writers and show runners are rightfully getting their place in the spotlight. Sure, Ali Liebert brings Betty’s swagger on Bomb Girls, but writers dream up the lines that cut through us like a warm knife through maple butter. Paige McCullers would be just a footnote — a field hockey penalty — if Pretty Little Liars’ show runner hadn’t seen her potential and gone with her gut. So here’s to the writers who inspire us, and the women and men who run the show. (Thank you to all of you who tweeted me your favorites.)

It’s been a tough week for Bomb Girls, what with the cancelled-but-with-a-movie-but-maybe-not news we’ve heard from the network, cast, and crew. Before we get into that, though, let’s talk about the episode itself. Given that it may very well be the second to last time we see our girls, I wish I could say that it’s one of their all-time greatest, but it falls somewhere in the middle in terms of quality. Although showing Gladys looking like this in the first two minutes of the episode may have been the problem, since you can only go downhill from here.
What’s black and white and red all over? A sex joke of some kind, I imagine.
She “runs into” “Clifford” at the symphony, although I worry about Gladys’ spy ability if she can’t tell that this guy is stalking her.

Did you know our brothers at AfterElton are now our brothers at The Backlot? Yep! New name, new design, same awesome content. In fact, just yesterday they posted a Dateability Index for many of the gay TV characters currently wooing them on the small screen. Of course that inspired us to do the same thing.
Below we have listed lots of your favorite current lesbian/bi characters and measured their dateability on a scale of one to five Emily Fitches.
The Gold Standard
Practically perfect in every way.
Anne, Go On
Pros: Whip-smart successful lawyer, loyal and empathetic friend, can rock a power suit, very fond of books and boobs.
Cons: Still working through grief over wife's death, has no qualms about correcting your grammar.
Dateability Rating: 3.5 Emily Fitches — Take it slowly; she startles easily.

Have you been thinking about watching Bomb Girls but putting it off? Maybe you’re already too committed to other shows or history isn’t your thing. Well now is not only a good time to jump on the bandwagon, it may be the last; the show’s producers have said that the show’s renewal hinges on tonight’s episode getting good ratings. Need another reason to tune in tonight? Here are 10.
1. Betty McRae
This is not an exaggeration: You have never seen a lesbian character like Betty McRae on your TV. A lesbian Rosie the Riveter who can't be open about her sexuality without risking her career, her relationships, even her safety— but who also refuses to stuff herself into the heterosexual box 1940s society demanded of her. 'Fringe' secrets revealed: 'September's Notebook' authors discuss making the ultimate companion book
Fringe wrapped its five-year foray into the far-out realms of science and dangerous dimensions of the human heart back in January. (Sniffle.) But today, exec producer J.H. Wyman, who oversaw the Bad Robot drama’s swan song season, tweeted out a touching post-script for fans: A drawing of a white tulip.
More than just an allusion to several Fringe episodes (including our pick for best ever), the image — which is meant to be printed out — has additional significance to anyone who has purchased September’s Notebook, a uniquely designed, detail-rich tome that summarizes the saga and digs deep into the...

When I went, aged 7 or 8, to audition for Music College, I was asked to sing “the first song that came into my head”. That song was the A Team theme music, by Mike Post. My older brother, in his audition, apparently sung the same thing. My mother chastised us afterwards, but clearly our renditions of this truly inspiring piece of music were acceptable, as we were both accepted.

I consider myself a veteran Honey Boo Boo Child fan, frantically cutting together this montage the morning after her amazing, hysterical, breakout Toddlers & Tiaras episode. Since then, the Go-Go-Juiced sassafrass [legal, rarely-heard name: Alana Holler], along with her coupon-cutting mamma June and daddy Sugar Bear, have scored their own reality series that infamously garnered more viewers than the Rnc and has spawned catchphrases like “You Betta Redneckognize!” In light of the show’s success, Honey Boo Boo’s veering more and more into the mainstream with a recent, hilarious interview on Anderson Live and a sketch featured on SNL‘s Weekend Update, starring Vanessa Bayer and Bobby Moynihan.

Canadian show Bomb Girls is all about the women, which is likely why it's been such a big hit with gay women. But there's also the character of Betty McRae, a Rosie the Riveter type with a confident swagger that noticeably sets her apart from her more feminine counterparts. Ali Liebert plays Betty, the tough-talking, take-no-crap from her male peers bombmaker who seems to soften only in the presence of her co-worker Kate (Charlotte Hegele).
Ali said she took her inspiration for Betty from the likes of James Dean, Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn, which is probably why she's so effective. "I can be very feminine or masculine and I turned up the masculine dial," Ali said. "I don't walk like her, so as an actor it was so fun finding her general physical presence. It was definitely something I've never really played before which was exciting for me."

Look who’s playing a bad dude now! EW has learned that Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) has been cast in an upcoming episode of NBC’s Chase. He’ll play Justin Tate, a cop-turned-fugitive who uses his law enforcement know-how to lure innocent prey. He’s also the first fugitive clever enough to elude the U.S. marshals – which keeps Annie Frost (Kelli Giddish) up at night!
Will our heroine catch him? You’ll have to find out in January, when Mabius’ episode airs. In case you’ve forgotten, Mabius played the beloved Daniel Meade for four years on ABC’s Betty.

"Great LezBritian" is a fortnightly stroll through the very best of British lesbo-centric entertainment and culture. Plus there will be some jolly good interviews with the top ladies who are waving the flag for gay UK.
So here we are finally watching Lip Service after months and months of full on c--k-teasing by the BBC. It’s like we’ve been having a long-term online relationship with Lip Service and we’re finally meeting for the first time. We’ve dressed up and we’re a little bit drunk.
While we waited, we watched Anne Lister — which was really very good — but we’ll be glad of some modern day action. We also watched bits of The Real L Word so we’ll be glad of something that doesn’t make us feel violently sick.
The first scene opens on a sunny street.
Lee: But this doesn’t look like Glasgow?...

Spring has folded and Summer TV is on the way. Here AceShowbiz lists the TV programs that serve as an alternative entertainment beside basking in the sun. Some like "Weeds" and "Burn Notice" are returning shows while others like "The Gates" and "Rubicon" are new to the ear.
One of the most anticipated returns in the hot season may as well be "True Blood". Constantly raking bigger number in each of its episode, the vampire-themed series picks up where season 2 left off when Bill was kidnapped. Creator Alan Ball said the mystery is not going to be a carrot dangled in front of audience's nose all season but will be solved immediately in the first episode airing June 13.
Another choice is multiple award winning series "Mad Men". The last time fans saw the mad men, the ad agency has turned into Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce and Betty was on the...

AMC will double the drama on Sunday nights this summer, pairing its new series "Rubicon" with the fourth season of "Mad Men."
The cable channel says "Mad Men" will return at 10 p.m. Et Sunday, July 25. Season 3 left off at the end of 1963 with Don Draper (Jon Hamm) in a good place professionally -- starting his own ad agency with several people from Sterling Cooper -- and a bad one personally: His wife, Betty (January Jones), was on her way to Reno to get a divorce.
There's no word yet on where Season 4 will pick up, and given creator Matthew Weiner's anti-spoiler stance, there likely won't be much in the three months between now and the premiere.
"Rubicon," a conspiracy thriller starring James Badge Dale ("The Pacific," "24"), will debut with a two-hour premiere at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1 and move to 9 p.m. the following week. Dale plays an...

This looks set to be an exciting year for feminism. Here Viv Groskop rounds up the books, films, theatre and marches that will inspire us all in the coming months
This is a big year for feminist anniversaries. It was 40 years ago that the first ever National Women's Liberation conference was held in the UK, that Germaine Greer published her groundbreaking book The Female Eunuch and Kate Millett published the life-changing work Sexual Politics. The year looks set to include a whole host of celebrations then, one of which is already underway – the Ms Understood exhibition at the Women's Library in London, which traces "the sisterhood and spirit of 1970s feminism" and runs until the end of March.
But this year's feminist calendar isn't solely historical. Three major new feminist books are to be published in Britain, the TV series Mad Men continues to explore the sexual politics of the 1960s,...

Who wants some girls in tight dresses? Of course you do, you naughty minxes, of course you do. The new character and group promo shots for the lovely ladies of The L Word were released this week and they look like a literal interpretation of those damn Betty lyrics.
Yes, Shane in a dress. No, the universe no longer makes sense. Someone, hold me.
Also, that big honking “Fin” was not my poetic Photoshopping license. And speaking of Photoshop, the marketers got busy with their favorite program in the other shots as well. I mean, seriously, could they be more obvious by including both a pool and a sunset in this shot? Hey, Showtime, your metaphors are showing.
For their solo shots, the ladies largely give their interpretations on the little black dress.

Hey, where is her other arm? Did Bette have a nasty encounter with the business...
