Exclusive: The first call Stephen Garrett made after acquiring the rights to suspense-fuelled book Culprits: The Heist Was Just the Beginning was to writer and director J Blakeson, who he hailed as “the real deal.”
Blakeson “has seen every crime movie and thriller. You can’t catch him out really,” Garrett pronounced sagely. He was ideal, then, to write and direct the TV adaptation of the multi-layered, heart-stopping anthology, edited by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips.
The result is Culprits, an eight-part thriller starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in a career-changing role, and Gemma Arterton, about the maelstrom that swirls after a gang of ruthless thieves pull off an ingenious heist.
Disney+ streams Culprits in the UK and Ireland on November 8 and in the U.S. on December 8 on Hulu. Garrett is executive producer, as are showrunner, writer and director Blakeson, and Johanna Devereaux. It’s produced by Morenike Williams.

Exclusive: Actor Theo James and producer Andrew D. Corkin are joining forces to produce theatrical and small-screen projects in the UK and U.S. with their new label Untapped.
“While our primary focus is genre and thriller, we are drawn to stories of conflicted humanity that force viewers to question how they would react when faced with real or existential threats,” said James. “These stories are often grounded in truth – literal or allegorical – encouraging us to confront and challenge the assumptions we make about ourselves and the world around us.”
Said Corkin: “We’re excited to solidify our partnership to tell complex, diverse stories across various mediums. Theo and I share a vision for how we want to build stories and worlds that both fit within the current marketplace and look beyond it.”
Already, James and Corkin have several film and TV projects in various stages of development, prep and post.

CBS is developing a "Marple," a crime drama TV series inspired by Agatha Christie's Miss Marple books.
There's a twist. In this version the elderly spinster who resides in the quaint pre-WW2 village of St. Mary Mead is gone, replaced by a modern day 38-year-old American woman who inherits her grandmother's bookstore. She soon realises that things in her small California town aren't what they seem, and begins working as a private investigator to get to the bottom of the town's mysteries.
David Wolstencroft, Hilary Strong and Christie's grandson Matthew Prichard will executive produce. Disney attempted a similar style project four years ago with Jennifer Garner slated to star in and produce, but that project was dropped and met with a vocal backlash.
Christie penned twelve Miss Marple books with each of the works having been adapted numerous times for the big and small screen - stories that include titles such as "4:50 from Paddington,...

The Escape Artist, Season 1, Episode 2, “Episode 2”

“Have courage in your convictions. Don’t let them rattle you”
The first half of Masterpiece Mystery’s The Escape Artist was a jumbled but ultimately entertaining crime thriller with some intriguing twists and exceptional acting by leads David Tennant and Toby Kebbell. It was far from perfect though- there were one too many questions concerning Kebbell’s psychopath Liam Foyle. He was a terrifying character, expertly acted but his motivations were sketchy and it was hard to relate to his actions because of that.
“Episode 2” is a more tightly wound episode than the first part, which it’s a big improvement over. The episode’s early courtroom scenes are fascinating and well put together; so are the quiet periods. Watching Will (David Tennant) and his son adjust after Foyle...

“It was a mistake; I just made sure they paid for it”
Legal crime dramas with ace lawyers as their lead are pretty easy to come by nowadays. Most don’t have David Tennant as that ace lawyer, though. The Escape Artist, airing for two weeks on Masterpiece Mystery, is a somewhat predictable thriller aided by great performances.
Tennant plays Will Burton, a talented junior barrister who’s never lost a case. He doesn’t particularly like the people he’s defending, but his career choice has been good to him. It’s given his family, sweet and understanding wife Kate (Ashley Jensen) and curious son Jamie (Gus Barry), a modern flat in the city and a quaint cottage in the country.

Nowadays everything from highly crafted series – The Tunnel and The Fall – to the ropiest ITV three-parters are stuffed full of imperilled females and butchered corpses. And lovely interiors.

A nice hot bath will never be the same after viewing this chilling legal thriller that shows David Tennant at his best
David Tennant's character, Will Burton, leads a charmed existence. A brilliant, so far unbeaten defence barrister, he is The Escape Artist (BBC1), so called for his ability to get people off and out of jail. He's Houdini when everyone else is Paul Daniels. Generally adored too, except by the prosecution. And by Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo), another barrister, who's been in Will's shadow since way back in law school. She's good too – not Paul Daniels, more like David Blaine. Or Cristiano Ronaldo to Burton's Lionel Messi in the Ballon d'Or of law.

Review Louisa Mellor 29 Oct 2013 - 22:00
New BBC three-part legal thriller The Escape Artist stars David Tennant and has a great deal to recommend it besides...
This review contains spoilers.
It’s a crowded market for legal dramas. The same goes for crime shows tipping female corpses into TV’s charnel house by the wheelbarrowful. You can barely flick between Eastenders and Bake-Off without meeting a serial killer. Why then, should we bother with The Escape Artist? Isn’t it another depressing chapter in the same murdered-woman-motivates-man-to-revenge story that we’ve been watching for years?
Perhaps, but it’s certainly much more besides. David Wolstencroft’s somewhat schlocky premise - a barrister gets a murder suspect off only for his wife to become the killer’s next victim - is seeded with questions about the ethics of a legal profession that prioritises case wins over justice and careerism over morality.

David Tennant stars in a new trailer for BBC One drama The Escape Artist.
The Doctor Who and Broadchurch actor plays Will Burton, a talented barrister who has earned the nickname 'The Escape Artist' for his skill in getting his clients out of tight legal corners.
But when Burton acquits Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell), the prime suspect in a horrific murder trial, he finds that his brilliance comes back to bite him with unexpected and chilling results.
Sophie Okonedo (The Slap) and Ashley Jensen (Extras) will also star in the new drama, written by Spooks creator David Wolstencroft.
"I wanted to write a thriller set in the legal world that's as much about those primal feelings as it is about the twists and turns of the case," Wolstencroft said.
"David Tennant is one of the most accomplished and iconic actors of his generation. I cannot wait to see him in Will's shoes.
