Helen Mirren is an extraordinary actor. This is a fact as indisputable as the rising of the sun, the receding of the tides or the notion that borscht is actually best served cold rather than piping hot. We tend to take this basic truth for granted. So, unfortunately, do producers and directors. Which is why you end up with projects like Catherine the Great, a miniseries about the rise of the female monarch who helped build Russia an empire. A joint effort between Britain’s Sky Atlantic and HBO (it...

For some, “Dame Helen Mirren playing the Catherine the Great” is all the convincing they’ll need to watch this new biographical limited series, which is perfectly understandable. The casting of Mirren in the role, which follows the Russian empress in the embattled latter years of her life, is a smart choice that proves its worth every time she’s onscreen. As a Catherine clinging to power after a bitter coup with white knuckles and an eye for devoted men, Mirren renders an almost mythic figure with grounded determination, gravitas, and occasionally petty instincts. With Mirren, who is also an executive producer, you know you’re in the hands of a pro — even when the show she’s anchoring lets her down.
Make no mistake: HBO and Sky’s “Catherine the Great,” from “Elizabeth I” writer Nigel Williams, is a handsome and competent production that luxuriates in every regal Russian...

[Editor’s note: This review contains spoilers for all four episodes of “Catherine the Great”, as well as a substantial portion of 18th century Russian history.]
The first thing you have to know about this telling of the life of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia is that star and executive producer Helen Mirren, wearing an Chopard black opal and diamond necklace with roughly 40 billion carats, arrived at the London premiere in an 18th century sedan chair carried by four men.
This is not, in other words, a production that skimps on the opulence. Nothing is subtle about it: not the acting, not the directing by Philip Martin, not the production design, not the costumes. It’s full-tilt scenery-chewing glamour in every frame of every scene; I weep for the loss of the entire planet’s gold leaf that was harvested to make this miniseries.
And, for the most part, it works. Mirren is in full Dame Helen Mirren mode, regal and saucy and steely by turn.

“There are unscrupulous people in Russia – fortunately, I am one of them,” declares a formidable Helen Mirren in full regalia as Catherine the Great in the first trailer of the Sky series based on the Russian empress, which will be on HBO in the U.S.
Oscar-winner Mirren is joined by Jason Clarke, Gina McKee and Rory Kinnear in the series, which bows on the Sky Atlantic channel in the U.K. this fall. HBO has “Catherine the Great” for the U.S. The series is the latest out of its drama partnership with Comcast-owned Sky.
The trailer shows scenes in palaces, battlefields and the bedroom, with glimpses of the life and loves of one of the most powerful female monarchs in history, including her passionate affair with general Grigory Potemkin.
“I have survived for half a century in a world that does not want me,” she says in a more reflective moment.

Television is a fast-paced business, where a show can be written, developed, ordered, cast, produced, and aired all within the course of a year. But sometimes, executives get ahead of themselves and shows are announced prematurely, or circumstances change, forcing delay.

Following its debut at Sundance earlier in the month, Lenny Abrahamson’s anticipated comedy Frank has found a home in the Us at Magnolia Pictures.
Deadline reports that the distributor has acquired North American rights to the film, and will be eyeing a release this summer.
The first clip from the film surfaced just ahead of its bow out in Park City, giving an ingenious little taste of the film.
Frank is a comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon, who discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins a band of eccentric pop musicians led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank and his terrifying sidekick, Clara. Frank’s uniqueness lies in the fact that he makes music purely for the joy of creating…and because he wears a giant fake head. After a rocky start, Jon ingratiates himself with the band members, and they...

You’ve probably heard a fair bit about this one, and now you get to know what company to pay attention to for all your The Double needs. The film has managed some great press following Tiff, and if Jesse Eisenberg wasn’t enough, writer/director Richard Ayoade is finally getting enough attention that people are curious to see what he’s doing with this one.
Unfortunately, we don’t get a lot of information about release, but this is one to keep your eyes on. If Submarine is anything to go by (which I loved), and if the full cast does even a small percentage of what they are capable of, this is going to be on your top list of 2014.

Am I alone in my false expectations that some things are supposed to last forever? Given Eugene Hernandez left Indiewire after 15 years, it should not be such a surprise to hear that Mike Goodridge is leaving Screen International after so many years there. He joined in 1994 and spent 12 years as the U.S. editor in L.A.
What's even more shocking is that he will become CEO at Protagonist. Not that he is ignorant of the international film business. His writing on it has always been an inspiration to me and I will miss reading his thoughts and analyses.
Protagonist is the international sales and financing company established in 2008 by shareholders Film4, Vertigo Films and Ingenious Media. Nigel Williams joined as majority shareholder and Chairman in 2010. Ben Roberts, its previous CEO, announced in April that he was leaving Protagonist to serve as new head of the BFI Film Fund starting this June.
Protagonist has sold titles including StreetDance, Tyrannosaur, Kill List, The Imposter, How I Live Now, Sightseers and The Sweeney.
Wendy Mitchell, Screen International’s current Head of Content, will serve as Acting Editor until a new editor is confirmed. She will work with Goodridge during a handover period until the end of July.

Protagonist Pictures has appointed Mike Goodridge to its CEO position, it was announced today. Goodridge will leave his editorship position at Screen International, where has worked in various capacities since 1994. He is expected to begin work at Protagonist in early August. "I am very excited to be taking over the reins at Protagonist, which has grown into such an identifiable brand so quickly in the marketplace," Goodridge said in a statement. "I can't wait to take on this new chapter in my career and work with the brilliant team at the company to build on what Ben Roberts has achieved in the first four years." The announcement comes after several weeks of speculation following outgoing CEO Ben Roberts’ appointment as Head of the Film Fund at the BFI in April. “We are delighted to have recruited someone with Mike’s experience and standing within the industry," Nigel Williams,...

Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby Dick has been cleverly adapted countless times. The first was the 1926 silent movie The Sea Beast, with Captain Ahab portrayed by John Barrymore. A lot has changed in filmaking since then, and we are catapulted, again, onto The Prequod--the famous vessel--and again to the extraordinary tale of a man riddled with obsession—Captain Ahab (Hurt)—who takes his crew on a personal vendetta--blinded by vengeance—in pursuit of the legendary white whale.
In this reimagined version of Melville’s Moby Dick, the power is in its all-star cast. The beginning of the film does drag a bit, but it successfully allows viewers to "get to know" the members of the crew and gave more of a back story on the main characters in the book. One character in particular, Ahab's (Hurt) wife, is briefly mentioned in the 1851 novel, while in the film, she has a...

The upcoming Teutonic retelling of "Moby Dick" has its Ahab: William Hurt has signed on to play the megamaniacal, peg-legged captain of the whaler Pequod, and Ethan Hawke has inked to play Starbuck, the first officer who is just about the only sailor who defies him.
Based on Herman Melville's 1851 novel, the miniseries is being produced by Herbert Kloiber's Tele Munchen and is being called the most expensive project in the German company's 40-year history. The budget is clocking at $25 million.
"We are delighted to have signed up two such powerful, charismatic and versatile actors as William Hurt and Ethan Hawke for the lead roles," Kloiber said.
Germany's Rtl, Austria's Orf and Robert Halmi's Rhi Entertainment have boarded as partners on the project.
Further foreign sales of the mini should take place in Cannes during the upcoming Mipcom TV trade show. There is no U.S. deal in place.
