Walt Disney Studios has had a pretty abysmal year at the international box office in 2023. Between Ant-Man: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and perhaps most disappointing, The Marvels, the typically successful movie studio has lost an ungodly amount of money by producing overly expensive feature films that failed to resonate among the masses and earn back their financial investments. If the studio isn’t careful and the trend continues, Disney could break another record for the all-time biggest box-office bomb on record.
Speaking of which, what would your answer be if you had to guess Disney’s most notorious financial flop of all time? Well, up until recently, the correct response would have been John Carter, the disastrous 2012 adaptation of Edgar Rice Boroughs’ A Princes of Mars. However, after tallying up the receipts in 2023, Disney’s most infamous box office failure now belongs to The Lone Ranger,...

Ridley Scott has found the composer for his upcoming “Gladiator” sequel.
Harry Gregson-Williams has been hired to score the hotly-anticipated Paramount feature, which is due out Nov. 22, more than 24 years after the Oscar-winning original.
The film marks the seventh collaboration between Scott and Gregson-Williams, with the composer having penned the scores for “The Martian,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Last Duel” and “House of Gucci”, as well as composing themes for “Prometheus” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Other credits for Gregson-Williams include “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget,” “The Meg,” “Mulan,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Equalizer,” “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and all four “Shrek” films.
In something of nice twist, Gregson-Williams also spent many years early in his career as a protégé of Hans Zimmer, who was the composer on the first “Gladiator” (and landed an Oscar nomination for his work).

The Wolf episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
If anybody ever had the acting chops in the 90s to convincingly play a publisher who gets bitten by a werewolf and then slowly starts to become one himself, it’s Jack Nicholson. This must have been exactly what producers Douglas Wick and Neal A. Machlis were thinking when casting their 1994 romantic horror movie and who better than the guy that convincingly played unhinged characters previously in both One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Shining? His past work as an actor was already impressive enough and his distinctive features and natural charm meant that he was perfect for the role. The movie sits snugly in the ‘so bad it’s actually pretty good...

When Walter F. Parkes and Douglas Wick approached Ridley Scott to direct Gladiator, Scott was almost immediately sold for one reason. The producers presented Scott with a copy of the 1872 Pollice Verso (Thumbs Down) by Jean-Léon Gérôme, and the idea of filming an ancient Roman Empire movie caught Scott’s attention. However, Scott made it clear from the onset he had no interest in making stereotypical Roman Empire movies. Nevertheless, the inspiration behind Gladiator came from older movies. The first thing Scott sought to change was David Frazoni‘s dialogue in his original speech. To help build Gladiator‘s screenplay, Scott and...

Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel has rounded out its cast with the additions of May Calamawy, Peter Mensah (“Avatar”) and Matt Lucas, as well as legacy cast member Derek Jacobi, who will reprise his role from the 2000 blockbuster.
“Kraven the Hunter” and “The White Lotus” star Fred Hechinger is now in talks to take on the role of Emperor Geta, after Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan dropped out of negotiations due to a scheduling conflict.
The new additions join a star-studded cast, led by Oscar nominee Paul Mescal and two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, with “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn set to play Emperor Caracalla and Pedro Pascal in final negotiations for an undisclosed role.
Plots details for the film, which Paramount has dated the film for Nov. 22, 2024, are largely being kept under wraps.

Pedro Pascal has joined Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, TheWrap has confirmed.
The previously announced cast already includes recent Oscar nominee Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Barry Keoghan and Connie Nielsen, who returns from the first movie. “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn is also in negotiations.
Not much is known about the sequel to Scott’s 2000 Oscar-winning blockbuster, although it’s thought to follow Maximus’ son (played by Mescal). The original film, of course, followed Maximus (Russell Crowe), a man whose family was taken from him and who went from slave to gladiator to revolutionary. What a movie.

We shall be entertained!
The cast is shaping up for Sir Ridley Scott’s sequel to his Oscar-winning Roman action-drama “Gladiator.” The latest addition, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is Barry Keoghan, the 30-year-old (but can pass for 15) Irish actor recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his turn in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” His previous work includes creepy supporting roles in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” “The Green Knight,” and a quick appearance as the Joker in “The Batman.”
Keoghan is thought to be playing Emperor Publius Septimus Geta. I just looked the guy up on Wikipedia and I think I just had the ending of “Gladiator 2” spoiled in the opening paragraph, so advise against this! I suspect he will be the villain of the new picture.
Another hot relative newcomer in the cast is 27-year-old Irish actor Paul Mescal, similarly coming off an Oscar nomination. His was for Best Actor,...

Paul Mescal just wants to look like a normal person, even when it comes to his body transformation to star in the highly talked-about “Gladiator” sequel.
The Oscar nominee shared he doesn’t find fitness talk “that interesting,” especially when it comes to bulking up for action-heavy period piece roles or superhero movies.
“With films like this and superhero films, there is sometimes a focus on that, which I don’t find that interesting,” Mescal told The Hollywood Reporter. “Of course, there’s a physical robustness required for the character, but past that, I’m not interested. This guy’s got to fight and got to be a beast. And whatever that looks and feels like is right for me, is what it’s going to be.”
Mescal added, “Sometimes I see films and I’m like, ‘That person doesn’t look real.'”

Director Ridley Scott’s follow-up to ‘Gladiator’ will release on November 22, 2024. ‘Aftersun’ Oscar nominee Paul Mescal is in negotiations to star in the film.
The untitled sequel will be produced by Scott, his Scott Free Productions president Michael Pruss, Red Wagon Entertainment’s Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher David Scarpa will write the script, reports Variety.
Released in 2000, the original ‘Gladiator’ starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman soldier forced into slavery who vows revenge against Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Since Maximus dies at the end of ‘Gladiator’, Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Maximus’ lover Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), in the sequel.

Are you not entertained? Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" was a massive hit, coming in second at the global box office in 2000 behind "Mission: Impossible II" and taking home five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe's turn as the Hispano-Roman general turned enslaved (and vengeful) gladiator fighter, Maximus Decimus Meridius. The film didn't exactly usher in a shiny new era for the sword-and-sandal flick, although it did lead to some rather profitable entries in the sub-genre, along with some busts we're probably better off forgetting. Even Scott has failed to repeat its commercial success with his historical epics since then, which is too bad seeing as some of them are quite good.

Director Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 has officially received a late 2024 release date.
Scott announced in 2018 that he was planning a follow-up to his original 2000 box office hit Gladiator, which starred Russell Crowe as Roman soldier Maximus. That film followed Maximus as he was forced into slavery and vowed to exact revenge against his betrayer Commodus, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix.
Now, nearly four years later, the sequel is reportedly scheduled for release in theatres on 22 November 2024, according to Variety.
As the end of Gladiator showed Maximus’s demise, Russell will not return for the sequel. The actor also recently confirmed this on an episode of the Fitzy and Wippa podcast.
Instead, the story will focus on Lucius, the son of Maximus’s lover Lucilla -- portrayed by Connie Nielsen.
Aftersun’s Paul Mescal is in negotiations to lead as Lucias, Variety reports.

Gather the weapons and unleash the lions because Paramount is going back into the arena after giving Gladiator 2 a release date of November 22, 2024. Paul Mescal stars in the sequel to Ridley Scott’s action-drama, taking over the lead from Russell Crowe’s Maximus from the first film. Mescal plays Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), who is fully grown in the sequel. The story takes place several years after Maximus’ death in the original. Before he died, Maximus rescued Lucius and his mother from the clutches of the young man’s uncle, Commodus (Phoenix). The event left an impression on Lucius, who aspires to be as formidable as Maximus as he braves a harsh world.

The “Aftersun” and “Normal People” star is in talks to star in Ridley Scott’s hotly-anticipated sequel to “Gladiator,” the 2000 epic that made Russell Crowe a superstar and went on to win an Oscar for best picture. But the film isn’t a prequel and Mescal won’t be stepping into Crowe’s toga. After all, Maximus, Crowe’s character, died standing up for the Republic in the Colosseum — a spoiler only if you’ve somehow missed “Gladiator’s” endless re-runs on cable TV and hate to, you know, be entertained. It is impossible to imagine Mike Nichols' "Working Girl" kicking off and concluding with anything less triumphal than Carly Simon's "Let the River Run." The opening helicopter shots of the Statue of Liberty and the Staten Island Ferry strike the perfect aspirational note, and the final exterior pull-back from Melanie Griffith's newly acquired office (which dissolves into a helicopter shot as well) would feel wrong with any other music cue.
Simon, having already collaborated with Nichols on "Heartburn," wrote the song specifically for the movie, but the film played much differently in its initial iteration. As a result, producer Douglas Wick and others...

There’s something irresistible about a cabal of girls experimenting with supernatural powers together, and of the venerated genre of teen witch movies, 1996’s “The Craft” is undoubtedly one of the best.

While speaking with Douglas Wick about Gladiator during its 20th anniversary, the producer said the first answer to any question should be having Ridley Scott in the meeting. Apparently that holds true for the long-gestating Gladiator 2 as well, which Wick confirmed is still very much alive.
“Yes, we’re working on it, and we’ve just all vowed that we’ll only proceed if we get something great on paper,” Wick tells me about the possible sequel. “We’re too respectful of the first movie to ever do anything cynical.”
The idea of a Gladiator 2 has been floating around since almost the day the original movie came out. French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme’s 1872 painting of gladiators and spectators, “Pollice Verso,” remains one of the defining portraits of ancient Rome. With its depiction of two fighters in the Colosseum, one standing and the other vanquished, pleading for mercy, it works as a paradox: The viewer is given both a sense of moral superiority over the distant past and a discreet delight as the crowd lowers their thumbs in bloodlust, demanding death. Historically accurate or not, it sets imaginations aflutter, and it alone convinced Ridley Scott to direct Gladiator.
Producer Douglas Wick remembers that well. After all, it did lead to him winning an Academy Award for Best Picture. But long before that 2001 Oscar night, he and Walter F. Parkes, studio head of DreamWorks Pictures, were sitting in Scott’s office, trying to convince the eclectic filmmaker behind Alien and Blade Runner about the virtues of a screenplay … all the while Scott,...
