Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson looked more in love than ever while walking the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards in NYC on Sunday. The pair was easily one of the cutest celebrity couples to roll up to the VMAs this year, sneaking in a few kisses in between fits of giggles in front of photographers. Nicole and Michael, who have been engaged since February 2015, left their adorable baby, Boomer, at home to enjoy the VMAs together, with Nicole rocking a low-cut Ted Baker London jumpsuit and Michael wearing a simple white shirt and jeans. After presenting an award, Michael also spent time with Ansel Elgort, Chance the Rapper, and Jaden Smith. The gold medal winner wasn't the only Olympian strutting his stuff at Madison Square Garden, either - the Final Five (minus one!) also hit the red carpet in style. Every once in a while, a television drama comes along that perfectly encapsulates the mood of the time in which it was made. In the 1980s - a decade best remembered in the United Kingdom for Thatcherism and the omnipresent threat of nuclear war - that drama was Edge of Darkness.
With its 30th anniversary fast approaching, Troy Kennedy Martin's eco-thriller is being afforded a welcome repeat showing on BBC Four - starting tonight (June 30) at 10pm.
Edge of Darkness - a six-part serial - is the story of Ronnie Craven, a Yorkshire police detective who initiates an off-the-books enquiry into his daughter's murder, only to discover that her death has broader political implications.
Soon, Craven is drawn into a world of corrupt politics and eco-terrorism, culminating in an ill-fated excursion into a radioactive waste facility known as 'Northmoor' - the hub of a power-hungry plot by malevolent forces.

As producer of Alan Bleasdale's The Black Stuff, I was immensely impressed by Jim Goddard's direction. Although it was transmitted as a BBC Play for Today, it was in fact a feature-length film. I recall Jim working in west London with the team of actors led by Bernard Hill playing Yosser Hughes, walking back and forth in a rehearsal room, to measure out a long tracking shot which was to be filmed on the roads of the north-east. With the actors in mind, Jim took full advantage by combining old-style television rehearsal with the economic need to keep the film camera turning.
This valuable preparation gave the team of actors the freedom of spirit which subsequently Michael Wearing and Philip Saville inherited when producing and directing, with newly introduced lightweight cameras, Bleasdale's compelling series The Boys from the Blackstuff.

NBC is setting the bar pretty high for Steve Carell’s final episode of The Office. In their latest promo, the network promises that Michael Scott’s last day in Scranton will be nothing short of “perfect.” The spot is light on laughs and heavy on tinkly piano music — though the opening image of Michael wearing cowboy boots and sitting on his office building’s roof in order to prepare for life in Colorado is pretty funny. Hopefully, that means Carell’s last day will be chuckle-inducing as well as justifiably sentimental. The supersized episode airs Thursday at 9 p.m.

Chicago – Mel Gibson’s return to the big screen in the thriller “Edge of Darkness” was relatively disappointing at the box office this weekend (opening with Gibson’s lowest first weekend box office since 1995) but not only is that film worth your time but you should definitely take a look at the award-winning 1985 BBC mini-series that inspired it, directed by the same filmmaker, Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”).
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
The original “Edge of Darkness” was both way ahead of its time and a definite product of its era. The dramatic drive of the piece would play just as well on television now as it did a quarter-century ago but the themes of nuclear proliferation and a dark underbelly of society had a bit more resonance in the mid-’80s (and perhaps that’s why audiences felt like they had seen this story enough times to not pay to see it...
