Here’s a flavour of what 2024 holds for your TV: book adaptations include a new imagining of Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective stories coming to the BBC, a scandalous adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel Rivals (starring David Tennant), Jack Thorne’s take on Lord of the Flies, and much much more.
There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

British director and screenwriter who enjoyed huge success with his 1987 hit film Wish You Were Here
Grittiness and compassion were the twin hallmarks of the writer and director David Leland, who has died aged 82. He scripted a clutch of uncompromising films that launched the screen careers of Cathy Tyson, Emily Lloyd and Tim Roth. Leland’s writing was distinctly British in flavour but without the parochial sensibility that might have limited its appeal.
His early draft of Mona Lisa (1986), an underworld thriller about the relationship between a sex worker (Tyson) and her driver (Bob Hoskins), was tougher and nastier than the finished film. Leland shared the screenplay credit with its Irish director, Neil Jordan.

Be nice to waiters. That’s the first lesson of new four-part BBC One drama Boiling Point. Be nice to waiters not only because it’s nice to be nice, but because however calm and smiling they emerge from behind those flapping kitchen doors, inside blows a hurricane. Personal dramas and business pressures, dodgy colleagues, nightmare customers, shifts that end at midnight and leave you buzzing with adrenaline that needs to go somewhere… it’s the perfect cocktail for dysfunction and conflict. Handily, that in turn is the perfect cocktail for TV drama, as we know from rightly critically acclaimed US series The Bear (watch that and watch this too; there’s plenty of room for both.)
Boiling Point’s second lesson is just to let this creative team get on with it. Give them a second series with the full six episodes immediately, please, because they clearly know what they’re doing.

A first clip has been unveiled from Luna Carmoon’s feature debut “Hoard,” which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
In the film, set in 1984 London, 7-year-old Maria and her mother live in their own loving world built on sorting through bins and collecting shiny rubbish. One night, their world falls apart, and the film joins Maria a decade later, living with her foster mother. An older stranger, Michael, then enters their home, opening the door to past trauma, magic and madness.

It was a story I was writing for just me, the world of ‘Hoard’ and its characters saved me truly,” Carmoon told Variety. “I never intended it to be seen … I was going to leave it at the bottom of my bed wrapped in string for the Newshopper and family to find to their shock and horror,...

Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. The one guarantee is that in the UK at least, there’s such an appetite for detectives and crime stories that TV will never run out of new cases to solve.
We’ve already had some top examples in 2023, from the Happy Valley and Endeavour finales to the excellent Belfast-based Blue Lights, but there are plenty more fresh crime dramas on the way, from police procedurals to true crime and murder mysteries. See what’s coming up below.

Last year’s winner was Cathy Tyson for her role in Channel 4 drama Help. Lead Jodie Comer won for the same show. This is Going to Hurt star Ben Whishaw presented this afternoon’s award, after seeing his co-star Ambika Mod snubbed in the Supporting Actress category.
Duff played Grace Williams in Bad Sisters, a bullied, troubled woman living with a nightmare husband, played by Claes Bang. The show was created by Sharon Horgan and has been a huge hit,...

“Don’t let them bury me, I’m not dead!”
When we think of zombies, it’s only natural to first go right into everyone’s favorite flesh-eating ghouls that were popularized by George Romero in his genre classic Night of the Living Dead. But the idea of zombies has been around much longer and is actually steeped in fact. Haitian voodoo has claimed to create zombies for hundreds of years and in film, these were represented in some of our earliest horror movies. White Zombie and I Walked with a Zombie are two of the more famous ones, but the entire sub-genre has some fascinating watches. Horror legend Wes Craven brought a return to Voodoo...

If you're a 90s kid like me, you probably know Bob Hoskins from playing Smee in "Hook" and private eye Eddie Valiant in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." I even remember him showing up in a standout "Frasier" episode where he played Dr. Crane's abrasive, cigar-addicted gym teacher, Coach Fuller. But if you look beyond his best-known roles, the man was one of the most versatile actors to ever do it. In fact, he started his film career not in charming, family-friendly projects, but by playing a ruthless London gangster.
"The Long Good Friday" is a 1980 crime thriller starring Hoskins as Harold Shand — a crime boss looking to go legit. Over the course of the film, Shand becomes increasingly violent and Hoskins portrays the gangster's struggles with his aggressive impulses with unsettling ease. But as we all now know, the actor was more than capable of playing much more diverse roles,...

Kitchen nightmares are all the rage these days – last year’s drama The Bear brought emotion and tender characterisation to the stressful setting of a deep-in-the-hole Chicago sandwich shop, while one-take-for-real movie Boiling Point got audiences hooked with its simmering tension and immersive shooting approach. And it’s been in the works for a little while now that Boiling Point is spinning onto the small screen in a BBC series that won’t continue the one-shot set-up, but will take viewers back into hell’s kitchen – and explore what happens next for Stephen Graham’s chaotic cook Andy.
The BBC has now confirmed that shooting on the series is underway – it’ll be a five-part drama with episodes running at one hour each. And while Graham’s Sous Chef Carly who’ll be at the centre of the show, now running her own restaurant with much of Andy’s team...

Filming has begun in Manchester, U.K., on “Boiling Point,” the five-part BBC series that follows on from the award-winning film of the same name.

As the pressure mounts to keep the restaurant full, Carly begins to feel the magnitude of responsibility that comes with running her own place.

The UK government confirmed plans for privatisation last month

It only feels like yesterday that the hapless Tom Wambsgans stabbed his wife and brothers-in-law in the back in the epic conclusion to Succession season three but series four has already nearly wrapped, according to creator Jesse Armstrong.
The highly-anticipated latest series could air as soon as next year and Armstrong told a group of journalists at last night’s BAFTA TV Awards that the team is nearly there.
“We are just almost wrapping up the season,” he said.
“We write and we do it here in London, so the American writers come over. I always have some ideas to go into it with but they are really good people to talk about the nuances of a character and the world watching the show.”
Other writers on the Sky/HBO mega-hit include I Hate Suzie creator Lucy Prebble and Veep’s Tony Roche.

The UK TV industry has attracted stinging criticism from special interest groups and trade bodies after only one of 12 nominated Directors at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards was female.
The We Are Doc Women collective, which is currently calling for broadcasters to bring in a 50% gender quota for directors on factual shows, said it will be contacting major broadcasters and production houses over the “saddening and angering” lack of female representation, while Directors UK criticized the lack of opportunities for diverse talent in mid-level careers.
We Are Doc Women’s statement described the male-only nomination shock as “one step forward and two steps back.”
The collective wrote to BAFTA in 2020 after a similar eventuality had taken place and last year’s Director: Factual nomination crop was 50/50 split, with Teresa Griffiths taking home the award for BBC Two’s Lee Miller: A Life on the Front Line.

More than two-thirds (67%) of this year’s BAFTA TV performance nominees are nominated for the first time, according to the award’s organizers, who hailed the organization’s impact on new voices.
The figure increased rapidly from 55% in 2021 and BAFTA Deputy Chair Sara Putt put this down to the drive for new, diverse talent along with BAFTA’s many programs that are bringing this new talent through.
Diverse performers such as It’s a Sin’s Omari Douglas and Lydia West along with Help’s Cathy Tyson have been recognized for the first time this year, along with creators like Jerk’s Tim Renkow, some of whom are BAFTA program graduates.

Bucking the trends for ’80s crime films, Neil Jordan’s tale of a low-rung hood attached to a ‘complicated’ call girl becomes a love story about meaningful relationships. Sort of the ‘anti- Travis Bickle,’ Bob Hoskins’ low-class mug discovers emotions and an ability to commit that could even be called Chivalric. Michael Caine chills as an all-too real villain, the boss that doesn’t think Hoskins worthy of a straight answer. Topping it off, cinematographer Roger Pratt makes this possibly the best-looking British crime film in color.

We're revisiting 1986 this month leading up to the next Supporting Actress Smackdown. As always Nick Taylor will suggest a few alternates to Oscar's ballot.
It’s been a while since I wrote about someone who had actual Oscar buzz, right? We can argue how Anna Magnani and Kimberly Elise should have contended in their years, but Cathy Tyson’s cryptic and involving turn in Mona Lisa definitely appears to have landed in the sixth spot of the 1986 Supporting Actress lineup. Tyson won Lafca (tying with Dianne Wiest for Hannah and Her Sisters) and was first runner-up with New York. She scored Globe and BAFTA nominations, as well, before missing out with Oscar. Given the strength of her performance, the degree of precursor attention she received, the way her role fits in well-worn paths for ingenue recognition, and the ... um... quality of some of the actual nominees, I’m surprised Tyson didn’t make the cut.

"Sometimes you have to lose it all... to find what out what really matters." Pink Flamingo Films released the official trailer for an indie dramedy titled The Loss Adjuster, from the UK directed by Vincent Woods. Luke Goss stars as a "Hapless Insurance Loss Adjuster" who feels his life is spiraling out of control but discovers that even when you reach rock bottom, that some clouds really do have a silver lining. When his wife leaves him, he befriends strangers around the city at Christmas time. "The idea was to create a story of hope, fortitude, craziness set against sadness, loss and frustration but create the ability to laugh at the same time. Picking yourself up through tiny moments and kind gestures from those real friends around you and unexpected goodness." Also starring Guy Siner, Martin Kemp, Lorna Fitzgerald, Cathy Tyson, Joan Collins, and Kym Marsh. This looks a bit rough around the edges,...
