It’s no joke: Comedian Fred Armisen really has joined Seth Meyers’ Late Night as bandleader-slash-music-”curator.” He’ll be helming the talk show’s house band — a talented group that also includes guitarist Seth Jabour of Les Savy Fav, bassist Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav, keyboardist Eli Janney of Girls Against Boys, and drummer Kim Thompson of Beyoncé’s touring band — even when he’s busy with other projects, like IFC’s Portlandia.
For those who know Armisen only as “that weird guy from SNL,” this news may seem more than a little random. But Armisen’s actually...

The death of Fantagraphics Books co-publisher Kim Thompson earlier this year was a big loss on a lot of levels, especially for the company the loved: Not only did it lose a family member and guiding hand, but it lost the work he was going to do—namely, editing Fantagraphics’ European graphic-novel line. That led to the cancellation or postponement of 13 books scheduled for the spring and summer, which means the company lost a bunch of revenue that has resulted in a “severe shortfall that will impede our ability to produce next season’s books,” it said in a ...

As reported by numerous sources, influential comic-book publisher Kim Thompson died Wednesday morning, after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was 56. Thompson is best known as the man who, along with partner Gary Groth, turned the Seattle-based comics publisher Fantagraphics from a bedroom enterprise in the ’70s into one of the most innovative and visionary champions of graphic narrative. Thompson’s accomplishments are numerous. Most visible among them, he and Fantagraphics helped nurture the careers of up-and-coming creators who are now leaders in the medium—Hate’s Peter Bagge, Eightball’s Dan Clowes, Acme Novelty Library’s Chris ...

Fantagraphics co-publisher Kim Thompson died at 6:30 this morning, June 19, at the age of 56. “He was my partner and close friend for 36 years,” said Fantagraphics co-publisher Gary Groth. Thompson was born in Denmark in 1956. He grew up in Europe, a lifelong comics fan, reading both European and American comics in Denmark, France, and Germany. He was an active fan in his teen years, writing to comics — his letters appeared in Marvel’s letter columns circa early 1970s — and contributing to fanzines from his various European perches. At the age of 21, he set foot, for the first time, on American soil, in late 1977. One “fanzine” he had not contributed to was The Comics Journal, which Groth and Michael Catron began publishing in July of 1976. That was soon to change. “Within a few weeks of his arrival,” said Groth, “he came over to our ‘office,’ which was the spare bedroom of my apartment,...

“The secret to Nancy’s success,” the classic story goes, “is that it takes as long to read it as it does to decide not to read it.”
When I heard that gag back in the 1970s, it was attributed to the great artist Wallace Wood. Chillingly, it’s possible it predates Woody’s career by decades. What somehow became synonymous with the bland and the banal started off as the offspring of a cheesecake girlie strip, Fritzi Ritz. It turns out Fritzi had this niece named Nancy who came to live with her. Being a gag strip, I do not believe the details of the demise of the spiky-haired girl’s parents were ever revealed, but it would be uncharitable to assume the spunky, independent girl murdered them in their sleep.
Nancy’s best friend was a Dead End Kids wannabe named Sluggo. Had Nancy shaved off her hair,...

Yep, the gift-giving holidays are upon us once again. Here’s three recent releases that are among the top of my list.
The Stan Lee Universe, by Danny Fingeroth and Roy Thomas TwoMorrows Publishing, $39.95 hardcover; also available in softcover and digital
If you’re asking “who’s Stan Lee and why should I care about his universe?” then I’m asking “why are you reading a website called ComicMix?” I’m not going to waste bandwidth establishing Stan’s street cred. The Stan Lee Universe is not the definitive biography of Stan Lee; even at 89 years of age (in three weeks), he’s continuing to create new comics properties and appearing on television shows and in movies and his story remains a work in progress. As a life-long comics fan and practicing professional, I find great comfort in that.

Emmerdale's Jeff Hordley has teased that the drama between Cain and Charity will go "on and on". Next week, the latest twist in the ongoing plot will see Cain sleep with Faye Lamb (Kim Thompson) when he incorrectly believes that Charity (Emma Atkins) has spent the night with Jai at a hotel. However, Hordly revealed that when his plan backfires Cain will have to fight harder than ever to win Charity back. "When she then accuses him, he doesn't deny it and admits he has slept with Faye but tells Charity he's 'within his rights' as she's slept with Jai," Hordley told Soaplife. "It's a tit-for-tat thing for Cain. She's telling the truth when she tells Cain that she hasn't slept with Jai, but he doesn't believe her for a second." However, Charity decides that she is not hanging around (more)...

Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker"), James Cameron ("Avatar"), Lee Daniels ("Precious"), Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air"), and Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds") will duke it out for the much coveted DGA Awards trophy.
Here are some fun facts:
*** Daniels is the first African-American to be nominated
*** Bigelow is the 7th female to be nominated
*** Cameron won the DGA trophy for 1997's "Titanic"
*** Tarantino was nominated in 1994 for "Pulp Fiction"
