French VFX powerhouse MacGuff – with headquarters in Paris and offices in L.A. – is using proprietary artificial intelligence tools, in particular Face Engine and Body Engine, in a broad range of VFX projects.

Bertrand Tavernier, a French director, screenwriter and film critic known for his films “The Clockmaker of St. Paul,” “‘Round Midnight” and “A Sunday in the Country,” has died. He was 79.
Tavernier came up in the wake of the French New Wave in the ’60s and was a BAFTA Award Winner for the film “Life and Nothing But.”

Colo Tavernier O’Hagan, the revered screenwriter of award-winning films by Bertrand Tavernier and Claude Chabrol, died from cancer on June 13, according to a statement from the Lumière Institute in Lyon.
Throughout her prolific career spanning film and TV, Tavernier O’Hagan was a life-long, inspiring collaborator to her former husband, Bertrand Tavernier, on many of his most successful films, starting in 1980 with “A Week’s Holiday,” which competed at Cannes.

A new monthly study by France’s National Cinema Centre (Cnc) tracking SVoD and VoD consumption has revealed the full extent of Netflix’s domination of the streaming market in the territory.
The Cnc began the study in 2018 in collaboration with market research firms Harris Interactive and Vertigo Research but only released the first two months of data, covering December 2018 and January 2019, this week on March 20.

Sydney Gallonde, the Paris-based producer of “No Second Chance,” Harlan Coben’s first series adaptation which traveled to more than 50 countries and drew high ratings, is ready to take his company Make it Happens Studios to the next level.
Gallonde (pictured with Coben), who has been attracting a wide range of French and international authors due to his successful collaboration with Coben, is currently developing an adaptation of the epic novel “The Twelve Children of Paris” with its author Tim Willocks, as well as untitled projects with Guillaume Musso and Jeff Linsday.
“The Twelve Children of Paris” is Willcoks’s latest book following his bestselling trilogy “The Religion,” “Bad City Blues” and “Green River Rising” which have been translated into more than 20 languages.

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

With only the Discovery, Mavericks and Masters programmes left to be determined, Tiff head programmers dished out the final make-up of the Galas, Special Presentations and Tiff Kids line-ups. Among the surprise/highly anticipated world preems we find Arie Posin’s The Face of Love, John Turturro’s Fading Gigolo, Kevin Macdonald’s How I Live Now, the long overdue showing for Charlie Stratton’s Therese and the out of nowhere sophomore feature from Quinceañera pairing Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland in The Last of Robin Hood, as well as the “theatrical” world preem to Sean Durkins’ Southcliffe (Channel 4′s TV Mini-Series, see pic above). The titles just keep coming as we are now just over three weeks away from the start of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and they have gone and added 90 new feature length titles to the program and it's not as if they are titles you haven't heard of. New to the Galas selection is Guillaume Canet's Blood Ties which premiered at Cannes earlier this year (read my review here) and Words and Pictures starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche. In the Special Presentations selection you find the bulk of the more noted titles including Alex Gibney's new documentary The Armstrong Lie about cyclist Lance Armstrong, Johnnie To's Blind Detective which also premiered at Cannes, James Franco's Child of God based on the Cormac McCarthy novel, John Turturro's Fading Gigolo which features Woody Allen in one of the roles, Kevin Macdonald's How I Live Now...

UCLA alumnus Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning "Milk" screenwriter, will be honored with UCLA's Distinguished Achievement in Screenwriting Award on June 10 at UCLA's Freud Playhouse.
The award will be presented to Black, a 1996 honors graduate of UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, during UCLA's Screenwriters Showcase, staged readings of student screenplays and teleplays selected by a jury of industry professionals in an annual competition.
The showcase is part of UCLA Festival 2009: New Creative Work, a nine-day celebration of the newest work by students from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, which takes place at UCLA and other sites June 5-13.

Organized by Gad Abitbol, Jonathan Bryant and Moise Kissous, the exhibition will include conferences with leading directors and industry insiders, roundtable discussions, screenings, exhibitions, workshops and trailers of films to be released in the coming year.

Dominated by co-writer and director Brigitte Rouan's courageous lead performance as a 40-year-old married woman embarking on a wildly liberating but dangerous affair with a man half her age, "Post-Coitum, Animal Triste" is a compelling, expertly fleshed-out drama.
The first of three new French films in the "Cannes 50" celebration of the world's most famous film festival, "Post-Coitum" screens tonight at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The unwieldy but appropriate title aside, Rouan's fine subtitled feature should spruce up many a festival lineup. Alas, its chances of regular domestic distribution are iffy at best.
We're introduced in the first scene to Diane (Rouan), a publisher's editor writhing in emotional and physical agony over a scuttled relationship. Although the film ultimately takes us through the stormy waters of Diane's post-affair journey into near catastrophe, Rouan backtracks to revel in the raw passions and naughty behavior that sweep up the wife and mother when she surrenders to the advances of gorgeous, attentive Emilio (Boris Terral).
A hydraulic engineer who works primarily in the Third World, Emilio is the roommate of Diane's most promising author, Francois (Nils Tavernier). Stymied by writer's block, Francois relies on Diane for professional help, and it's through him that she first encounters Emilio. In a jarring disruption to the lightly comic first act, an older woman (Francoise Arnoul) murders her aging husband by stabbing him in the neck with a fork.
The lawyer defending Arnoul's character is Diane's husband Philippe (Patrick Chesnais), who soon suspects his wife of having an affair but does not directly confront her. Quiet and decent, he connects on a personal level with his client and comes to understand her motives for ending 40 years of marriage with violence.
With a sly approach, Rouan and her co-writers eventually create a satisfying cinematic tragicomedy devoted to the sadness of those experiencing loss of love. It's an occasionally rough viewing experience and also quite sexy but nothing less than truthful and timelessly relevant.
The film is a showcase for Rouan's prodigious thespian talents as she moves from girlish abandon to anger to self-destruction. In scene after scene, she captures the extreme exaltation and naked misery of a modern woman who falls in love only "once every 15 years."
