The pitch was "Rambo in an office building." In the 1980s, the idea of a Rambo type in anything, anywhere would at least get your project shuttled down the studio production pipeline. 20th Century Fox rightly believed they had a potential winner in "Die Hard." So why was the project anathema to every A-list movie star in Hollywood?
Perhaps it was the pedigree. "Die Hard" was an adaptation of Roderick Thorp's action novel "Nothing Lasts Forever," the author's 1979 sequel to his 1966 bestseller "The Detective." That cop thriller had been turned into a 1968 star vehicle for Frank Sinatra, who was nearing the end of his 1960s big-screen comeback. It was a solid hit for 20th Century Fox, but, despite a feint toward grittiness, it was viewed as nothing more than a paycheck gig for the Chairman.
So 20 years later, when Fox spied blockbuster potential in Thorp's sequel (which was...

All epic sagas must come to an end, and Vikings: Valhalla will embark on one last adventure in Season 3.
Co-creator and executive producer Jeb Stuart is bringing the series to a natural creative conclusion next year, but the ship won’t be sailing off into the sunset quietly. “I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald, and Freydís. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today, and we have done just that,” Stuart said. “I hope when the audience gets to see the new season, they’ll be excited by all the new heights that we’ve taken these heroes.”

After the success of Ridley Scott’s Alien, the world saw a surge in sci-fi movies centered around blue-collar workers finding themselves up against terrifying creatures, usually in a dark, dank, remote setting. Some of these rip-offs were studio affairs, but a majority of them were made for the home video and late-night cable markets, where the cheap sets and shoddy effects weren’t such big deals. Who among us hasn’t enjoyed a low-budget monster flick that was clearly made for the price of a six-pack? 1989 brought us not one but three sci-fi movies that had at least partial inspiration from Alien and its sequel, Aliens. The latter film’s director, James Cameron, brought us his underwater epic The Abyss, which isn’t a horror film but certainly takes some cues from those earlier movies. Deepstar Six was Sean S. Cunningham’s attempt to bring the slasher movie underwater,...

The Fugitive was not the movie audiences expected when they walked into their local cinemas 30 years ago. Designed to be a splashy star vehicle for Harrison Ford that summer, the film was an action-thriller, obviously, and one that even back then was banking on name recognition and brand familiarity—in this case for a 1960s television series that aired on ABC. Still, few moviegoers or critics expected it to wind up on end of year lists, or for it to be included in conversations about the best movies of 1993. But it was, including when it was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (it lost out to Schindler’s List).
There’s a reason the film made such a visceral impact in its heyday, though, and why even three decades on it remains one of the finest action movies ever produced. And it may very well come down to one...

When Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert sat down at the end of 1993 to pick their 10 favorite movies of the year, they largely selected prestige, Oscar-bait films like The Piano, The Age of Innocence, The Joy Luck Club, and Schindler’s List. They skipped nearly all of the big multiplex hits of the year, including Jurassic Park, Sleepless in Seattle, and Mrs. Doubtfire, making an exception only for The Fugitive. It’s an honor they didn’t give to Die Hard in 1988, The Terminator in 1984, Aliens in 1986, or many other great action movies of the VHS era.

Die Hard is an unquestioned action masterpiece. Thanks to revelatory performances by both Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, plus John McTiernan’s assured direction, Die Hard still has the power to awe and entertain even decades after its release. Few can say the same about the sequels, but what about the Die Hard prequel, The Detective?
Oh, you’ve never heard of a Die Hard prequel? Well, that could be because the 1968 Frank Sinatra vehicle The Detective is based on the 1966 novel by the same name, written by Roderick Thorp. And in 1979, Thorp published a sequel to The Detective called Nothing Lasts Forever, in which criminals led by a man called Gruber take control of a Los Angeles high-rise during a company party. Gruber even holds hostage the family member of a hero cop who must go rogue upstairs if he is going to thwart the terrorists. Also it’s Christmas time.

When it comes to adapting a classic TV show to the big screen, it doesn’t get much better than Andrew Davis’ The Fugitive. Indeed, the third highest-grossing film of 1993 proved to be a monumental critical and commercial hit that earned more than $370 million globally and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In addition to Tommy Lee Jones winning an Oscar for his indelible supporting turn as U.S. Marshall Sam Gerard, the film still boasts some of the most impressive action set pieces and stunning practical FX on record. The movie succeeds on multiple levels as a riveting manhunt thriller, an engrossing murder mystery, a compelling redemption story, an FX-driven action-adventure, and of course, a faithful TV adaptation that both honors the spirit of the original and also pushes the narrative forward into daring, unpredictable territory. Yet, for as nearly perfect a film as The Fugitive remains to this day,...

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does not have a good reputation. Released in 2008 and almost a full 20 years after what was considered the ending of a trilogy, the fourth Indiana Jones picture was directed by a different kind of Steven Spielberg, one who’d been primarily focused on adult historical dramas since the turn of the century, and starred a much older Harrison Ford. It felt different too, even as it tried to act largely the same as the film that came before it, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). This internal refusal to admit Indy had changed was only compounded by the dubious choice to tie aliens to the film’s central mystery—much to the chagrin of the film’s star.
While the movie received some positive notices from critics during release, including Roger Ebert, fans were instantly divided on the film’s overly sentimental tone,...

The 1963 TV series "The Fugitive" was a massive success in its initial four-season run, and became something of a pop cultural touchstone. The premise was a grabber: Dr. Richard Kimble (David Janssen) has been arrested and convicted for the murder of his wife, a crime he didn't commit. Dr. Kimble slips the authorities and goes on the lam, eager to track down the real killer and prove his innocence. All he knew was that the killer had one arm. On Dr. Kimble's tail -- the Javert to his Valjean -- was Lieutenant Philip Gerard (Barry Morse), who didn't much care if Kimble was guilty or innocent; he merely sought to apprehend him and let the law work itself out.
30 years later, "The Fugitive" would be adapted into a massively successful and acclaimed feature film starring Harrison Ford as Kimble and Tommy Lee Jones as the re-named Sam Gerard, a U.

You probably know more about Ronald Reagan from U.S. History than Film Studies. Make no mistake. Before Reagan ever ran for office, he was an actor. The 40th U.S. president started his entertainment career as "Dutch" Reagan, a radio sports announcer in Des Moines, Iowa. Reagan honed his storytelling chops by recreating Chicago Cubs games with nothing but a slip sent to him by telegraph. The 26-year-old dreamed of big-screen stardom, so he joined the Cubs for spring training in Southern California — to snag a screen test with Warner Brothers. The WB studio suits liked what they saw, and film actor Ronald Reagan was born.
While Reagan had a better Hollywood career than most, he never became a bonafide movie star. Throughout Reagan's political career, opponents and detractors slandered him as a "B-movie actor." However, Reagan was a B-movie actor. No, he wasn't starring in the 1940s equivalent...

Assassin’s Creed can’t seem to catch a break. Back in October 2020, Netflix confirmed that they would be teaming up with Ubisoft to create a new Assassin’s Creed live-action series. Here’s the official statement from Ubisoft about the television series: “A brand-new, live-action Assassin’s Creed series is coming to Netflix. The deal includes multiple show. One of which will be a genre-bending live-action epic, while the others will be animated and anime adaptations.” Since the original announcement, there’s been little update about the television series. The following article contains spoilers for Vikings: Valhalla season 2.
Season 2 of Vikings: Valhalla ended with lots of drama: Freydis and her Jomsvikings managed to fight off an invasion by Olaf’s forces, while Harald and Lief finally reached the outskirts of Constantinople, after a perilous journey that involved going over a literal waterfall. Elena, the young noblewoman they’ve been traveling with turns out to be the future empress of Constantinople, and Harald’s attraction to her may now mean provoking an international incident. Poor Lief has had to bury yet another woman he cares for, though the navigation lessons Mariam taught him—along with her fortune—will certainly change him and his destiny. And in England, Earl Godwin has conned his way into a royal marriage, as Queen Emma fumes about being so capably deceived by her husband’s top advisor.
What could possibly be next for all our Valhalla favorites?...

The second season of Vikings: Valhalla serves a lot of masters, with a sprawling plot that includes a dozen major characters, half that many countries, huge action set pieces, and rich interpersonal dynamics. From Harald’s determination to prove that the throne of Norway is his destiny to Lief’s desperate attempts to find out where his true beliefs (religious and otherwise) lie, season 2 is full of nuanced and emotional character moments.
But no one’s journey is as satisfying to watch unfold this season as that of Freydis Eriksdotter. In the series’ first season, we watched her learn to fight for herself, ultimately becoming a shield-maiden of Kattegat. In Valhalla season 2, we get to see her come into her own in almost every other conceivable way: spiritually, as the Keeper of the Faith; politically, as a leader in the Viking stronghold of Jomsborg; and emotionally,...

One of the most interesting aspects of Vikings: Valhalla season 2 is the way the series literally opens up the world to its story and characters. Yes, there’s still plenty of scheming, bloodshed, and betrayal, but gone is the sense that this is an insular story taking place among a small sub-group of people. In season 2, Valhalla sees its trio of main characters head off on separate adventures that literally span continents as the show does its best to depict the immense influence that Viking culture had on much of the known world—both during the 11th century and for hundreds of years afterward.
The original Vikings series was predominantly centered around Kattegat, and while there were certainly several notable forays into other locations over the course of its six seasons, all roads eventually led back to the Norwegian town and the...

Heroes don’t quit. In the second installment of 11th-century Norse drama Vikings: Valhalla, the valiant leads — warrior explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his sister and keeper of the pagan flame Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), and ambitious prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) — venture into unfamiliar worlds. “Season 2 is about: Does the Viking ethos survive when you get out into the bigger universe?” says executive producer Jeb Stuart. Considering this trio’s ax-sharp survival skills, the answer is ja. They sure can’t go home again: In the finale, Harald’s half-brother Olaf (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) conquered Kattegat in a bloody battle that killed both Freydis’ mentor and Leif’s love. The melee also left Harald badly wounded, but Freydis rescued him. In the opener, we learn she’s pregnant but not telling Harald, and the couple opt to take separate paths. Explains Gustavsson: “It’s not lack of love — they have destinies to fulfill.

Vikings: Valhalla is a series created by Michael Hirst and Jeb Stuart starring Sam Corlett, Laura Berlin and Bradley Freegard among others.
Today we get to see the second season of Vikings: Valhalla, a series that has known how to collect all of the essence of the preceeding series and transform it into something that is even better and richer. It knows how to make good use of all the film achievements of Vkings, but recreating the impact of the violence and extracting to advantage its barbaric and devastating essence.
This is a prequel that combines history and action, which taken to the most spectacular, has known how to reach millions of viewers with this subtle combination that works so well for some and leaving the sticklers for history rather unsatisfied.
A good, really good second season that continues the rhythm and speeds it up delivering more with regards to the first season.

Jeb Stuart is a man with a very interesting career. He started hot as a screenwriter for films such as “Diehard,” “The Fugitive,” and “Another 48 Hrs.” However, as the ‘90s came to a close, you didn’t hear much about Stuart. But last year, he came back with a vengeance as the showrunner of the Netflix hit series, “Vikings: Valhalla.” And towards the end of 2022, it was announced that he would be showrunner of perhaps his biggest project yet, a series based on “Assassin’s Creed.” Well, as we enter 2023, it appears that has changed.

The 2016 film adaptation of the hit Assassin’s Creed video game franchise was very poorly received and underperformed at the box office. You can hear all about that in the video embedded above. A couple years ago, game publisher Ubisoft announced that they were teaming up with the Netflix streaming service to give an Assassin’s Creed adaptation another try – this time as a television series. Now it has revealed that the TV version of Assassin’s Creed has since hit a bump in the road, as showrunner Jeb Stuart is no longer involved with it.
Asked by Collider if he left the project due to creative differences, Stuart answered, “I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that’s fair.

In all forms, "Assassin's Creed" is the story of an ancient rivalry between two opposing ideologies. For those who haven't played Ubisoft's video games or seen the movie adaptation starring Michael Fassbender, the core conflict of freedom versus control is embodied by two warring factions: the Assassin Brotherhood (also known as the Order of Assassins) and the Templars, respectively.
If the Templars sound familiar, it's because they are a fictitious rendition of a real group, but that's a topic for another article. All that you really need to know is that "Assassin's Creed" is an amalgamation of sci-fi and historical fiction, that the group who are literally killers by title are the good guys, and that Netflix is currently developing the series' next live-action treatment.
Now, we previously reported that "Vikings: Valhalla" showrunner Jeb Stuart had signed on to helm the "Assassin's Creed" Netflix series as both writer and showrunner.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the “Assassin’s Creed” video game has lost its showrunner. Jeb Stuart, who was set to spearhead the series, confirmed his departure in an interview with Collider.
Stuart, who was a writer for “Die Hard” and “The Fugitive” and showrunner of “Vikings: Valhalla,” told Collider that he is “no longer involved” with “Assassin’s Creed” and left after a “difference in vision.”
“I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision,” Stuart said. “So I think that’s fair. I know it’s going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it’s a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides.

One word that comes to mind when you hear the title Die Hard is “definitive.” After all, it’s widely considered star Bruce Willis’ definitive role. Still, it’s also, arguably, the definitive action movie and even the definitive Christmas movie by some (in a debate that’s grown a bit tiresome). Indeed, Bruce Willis as John McClane, fighting terrorists in the Nakatomi skyscraper in Los Angeles, is a defining image of the eighties. Director John McTiernan, writers Steven E. De Souza and Jeb Stuart, and star Bruce Willis crafted a carnage-filled epic grounded by a very human hero – John McClane, who was a notable departure from the icons of the genre at the time, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. McClane was no superman. Instead, he was human, flawed and broken-hearted over his failed marriage. His only goal was to rescue his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) and get home for Christmas with his kids.

Thirty-six floors. Thirteen terrorists. Three exclusive interviews. Eminently quotable and endlessly rewatchable, Die Hard remains the gold standard for big screen action. Adapted from a Roderick Thorp novel by first-timer Jeb Stuart and meticulously directed by set-piece maestro John McTiernan — these rare ingredients distilled into a film like no other. For the movie's 30th birthday back in 2018, we spoke to McTiernan, De Souza and Stuart to bring you the ultimate Die Hard viewing guide. Yippee-Ki-Yay, motherfuckers.

Making its debut on History back in 2013, "Vikings" delivered a visceral, bone-crunching journey to the eighth-century Scandinavia and the age of the Vikings. The gritty, violent saga told the story of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a farmer who became a warrior and, ultimately, a king. Another part of the series' ongoing storylines involved his first wife, the shieldmaiden Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), their son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), and various other characters who were introduced over the course of the show's six seasons.
As "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst explained to Looper, the writer enlisted a Viking historian to explore some of the most notable figures from that era. He wound up honing in on Ragnar because he was "the first great Viking leader to emerge from the myth and legend, and that was perfect in many ways because it was the beginning of the Viking age." While the series concluded in 2021, fans...

Exclusive: 1883‘s Lamonica Garrett and Martin Sensmeier are the latest additions to the cast of the street racing action-thriller Takeover, led by Migos frontman Quavo, from Trioscope and Quality Films. The pair joins an ensemble which also includes Billy Zane and Serayah, as previously announced.
The film, currently in production in Atlanta, will implement Trioscope’s proprietary technology that blends live-action with CG, underscoring the fascination and controversy surrounding the city’s street takeovers — also known as “sideshows.”
Garrett portrays Sheriff ‘Herc’ Hitchens, public enemy #1 in the takeover community. Billy Zane knows how to pick a villain. The actor has consistently provoked reactions of seething disgust for decades, ever since he first jumped on the screen in "Back to the Future" as one of Biff's henchmen. Of course, he is best known as the epitome of entitlement and toxicity in James Cameron's epic "Titanic," where he most famously abused the "women and children first" code of conduct by kidnapping a little girl he immediately abandons when she isn't a convenience.
Since then, Zane has played villains in "MacGruber," "Kingdom Hearts," and even in "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" where Zane plays the greatest showman himself, P.T. Barnum. As a reminder, that show was insane, and totally perfect.
Now, Zane has found his latest role, and it sounds like another Zane winner. Variety reports Billy Zane is set to star in the action thriller heist film "Takeover."

Street takeovers are a U.S. phenomenon where motorists arrive at a particular location in a coordinated manner similar to flash mobs, block streets with their vehicles and engage in stunts with their cars. Criminals often use this time to conduct robberies.
