Samuel L. Jackson has sported a variety of hairstyles in his movies, from Pulp Fiction to Unbreakable. But there was one unnamed filmmaker who tried to restrict the hairdo Jackson wore in a movie.

Jackson often chooses his hairstyle for the characters that he portrays in movies. Occasionally the actor would feel a certain hairdo would fit a particular role, while also telling audiences a bit more about his character’s story.
In the M. Night Shyamalan film Unbreakable, for instance, Jackson portrays a genius with hints of mental instability. Both Shyamalan and Jackson agreed that a disheveled look for Jackson’s hair would be best for his Unbreakable counterpart.
“I was thinking Frederick Douglass,” he once said according to LA Times about his character’s hair. “It informed my character very well because he’s a thinker.

The classic Robert Louis Stevenson story of split identities is given another cinematic treatment in Serge Bozon‘s “Mrs. Hyde,” which stars Isabelle Huppert as the titular character, although she is at first just Madame Gequil — a dissatisfied physics teacher at a blue-collar high-school mostly filled with kids from an immigrant background. At first, playing like a parody of “Dangerous Minds,” the structural and ruling management of Madame Gequil’s classes is all over the place, and whenever she appears for her afternoon tech class, chaos ensues among the students.

For the past 47 years, Jeffrey MacDonald — the former Green Beret surgeon convicted of the 1970 murder of his pregnant wife and two daughters — has been the subject of thousands of news articles as well as multiple books and movies.
Some have portrayed him as a sociopath. Some have portrayed him as an innocent man allegedly railroaded by inexperienced Army investigators. Mostly, it’s the negative portrayals that have stuck.
However, MacDonald’s defenders are quick to point to an extensive battery of psychological tests by different prominent forensic psychiatrists, all of which have shown no signs of a sociopathic or psychopathic personality disorder.

When military police officer Ken Mica arrived at Jeffrey MacDonald’s Fort Bragg, North Carolina apartment on Feb. 17, 1970, he saw MacDonald in the master bedroom, lying on his stomach next to his bloodied wife, Colette.
“I see he’s still alive and I lean down next to him and say, ‘Who did this?’ ” Mica tells People. “And he starts describing three guys and a woman.”
The woman he described — long blonde hair or wig, a floppy hat and knee-high boots — resembled a woman Mica had passed on the way to the apartment belonging to MacDonald, a Green Beret surgeon. Mica...

British actors and directors in Hollywood; Hollywood actors and directors in Britain: Anthony Slide's 'A Special Relationship.' 'A Special Relationship' Q&A: Britain in Hollywood and Hollywood in Britain First of all, what made you think of a book on “the special relationship” between the American and British film industries – particularly on the British side? I was aware of a couple of books on the British in Hollywood, but I wanted to move beyond that somewhat limited discussion and document the whole British/American relationship as it applied to filmmaking. Growing up in England, I had always been interested in the history of the British cinema, but generally my writing on film history has been concentrated on America. I suppose to a certain extent I wanted to go back into my archives,...

Deadline reports that David Fincher is hammering out the details of a comedy about the music industry for HBO. Rich Wilkes and Bob Stevenson have written the script, currently titled Living On Video, and Fincher is expected to direct. Although the project has not been given a green light yet, it would follow college dropout Bobby, who moves to Hollywood in 1983 with dreams of becoming a big-time director (but first, music videos). Through Bobby's eyes, we'll get an Entourage-esque look at the music industry's major players — and their retro decadence — as he tries to forge his way. One can only hope for a solid '80s version of Turtle.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

"Jayne Mansfield's Car" is the first feature film Billy Bob Thornton has written and directed in 12 years, and its new trailer finds the Oscar winner donning a thick Southern accent as an Alabama native. "Car," set in the late 1960s, depicts a multi-generational family that clashes when their British counterparts -- one of whom is referred to as "that English bastard" -- call to inform them of the death of their matriarch.
Robert Duvall plays the head honcho of the Alabama family, while John Hurt leads the London clan. Thornton, Kevin Bacon and Robert Patrick play the three Southern siblings, with Tippi Hedren, Frances O'Connor and Robert Stevenson rounding out the cast. Co-written by frequent Thornton collaborator Tom Epperson, "Car" hits theaters Sept. 13. Will it net Thornton a second screenplay Oscar, following his win for 1996's "Sling Blade"? Watch the trailer and weigh in.

Well it would seem that Guy Ritchie has officially moved on from making his trademark British gangster flicks to becoming just another Hollywood blockbuster helmer for hire. He now has two Sherlock Holmes movies under his belt with a third likely on the way, but he has also been attaching himself to several other tentpole properties as of late. Late last year he replaced Steven Soderbergh as the director of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. big screen adaptation, and he was also rumoured to be working on a Cannonball Run remake. Now this week it looks like he is preparing give The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise a run for its money by signing on to direct a new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island for Warner Brothers. Hmm... why am I suddenly picturing Robert Downey Jr. as Long John Silver? According to Deadline, Ritchie...

Get ready for an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson‘s classic pirate adventure guys! Treasure Island is still going to happen, and it looks that Guy Ritchie is attached to both direct and produce the whole thing which is probably a good news, especially because we know that Warner Bros. studio is behind this project. Warner Bros. and Sherlock Holmes producer Lionel Wigram have been sailing the heady seas of development towards a new version of Treasure Island for at least a couple of years now. But while they’ve hit a couple of sandbanks (Paul Greengrass considered then ditched the idea), they’re now headed for what they likely consider a safe harbour, attaching Holmes man Guy Ritchie to take on the project. In what will likely be the 734th (or thereabouts) adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate yarn, the plan is to maintain the period trappings, but give it a modern feel, much as they did with Baker Street’s most famous resident.Warners has hired Alex Harakis to write the screenplay for Ritchie to consider. It’s the latest joint venture between the director and his Holmes producer, and will be a part of the production company they’re now operating,...

Breaking news from the WB! Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch) has been hired to direct their version of Treasure Island. They have attached writer Alex Harakis to take care of the script. Not much is known about Harakis, but with Ritchie at the helm I am not too worried about it. Here is the announcement that broke at Deadline:
Warner Bros has attached Guy Ritchie to direct a new version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate tale Treasure Island, and has set Alex Harakis to write the script. Ritchie will produce the film with his partner Lionel Wigram and Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick. It was Wigram who originally set up a stylized version of the classic novel, much the way he did Sherlock Holmes, which Ritchie directed. He set it up before he and Ritchie became partners. Their first move after partnering was to take on The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,...

Guy Ritchie, currently on the hook to adapt “The Man from Uncle” for Warner Bros., has now added a remake of “Treasure Island” to his plate — also for Warner Bros. This would be the fourth film in a row that Ritchie has made for Warner, counting his two “Sherlock Holmes” movie. Warner’s version of “Treasure Island” originally had “Bourne” director Paul Greengrass attached to direct, but he’s apparently left the project, and Ritchie has taken over. Boarding the novel means Ritchie will be re-teaming once again with his “Sherlock Holmes” producer Lionel Wigram, who came up with the idea for a contemporary version of Holmes, and now, “Treasure Island”. Written by the Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson, the original “Treasure Island” novel followed the adventures of an innkeeper’s son name Jim Hawkins, who finds himself in possession of a feared pirate’s treasure map. On his way to...

We can add yet another big-budget studio affair to Guy Ritchie‘s slate. Deadline inform us that he’s Warners’ pick for Treasure Island, a “stylized version” of Robert Louis Stevenson‘s nautical adventure that he, along with Lionel Wigram (Sherlock Holmes), will be producing.
Past that slim modicum of information, however, we know almost nothing about this new Treasure Island — save for the fact that Alex Harakis will be writing. If you care enough and want a clearer impression (I’m sure there’s someone), look toward the two Sherlock Holmes films, which Wigram is apparently trying to emulate on this outing — which makes Ritchie‘s hiring all the patent and, personally, dreadful. (I do enjoy his early films, like most others, but the formal and aesthetic shift we’ve seen these past two and a half years is not, by any means, what I want him to stick with.

Producer Lionel Wigram helped reinvent Sherlock Holmes as a period action franchise with Robert Downey Jr. and he continued work on rebooting the Robert Louis Stevenson pirate adventure Treasure Island in the same manner. Deadline reported today that Wigram looked to repeat his success by signing his Sherlock Holmes franchise director Guy Ritchie to help breathe new life into the pirate adventure. Kevin McCormick of Langley Park joined as co-producer along with Alex Harakis as screenwriter. Ritchie also joined Wigram on another reboot; taking over for Steven Soderbergh on the Warner Bros. big-screen take on sixties spy show The Man From U.N.C.L.E....

The French gave us the word “demimonde” – literally, half the world. But what it has come to mean in English, or so says Webster, is “a distinct circle or world that is often an isolated part of a larger world.”
Storytellers have always held a fascination with the dark side of human nature; that part of the psyche which is normally restrained and leashed, taught to be obedient, held in check – as Conrad wrote in Heart of Darkness – by the reproving looks of our neighbors. After all, what was Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde but a probing of that other, id-driven half and the entrancing appeal of doing what one wants instead of what one should.

The man behind the futuristic Transformers movies is going back in time to develop a televised prequel to classic adventure story Treasure Island.
Director Michael Bay is set to mine interest in Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale - thanks to a new TV movie adaptation starring Eddie Izzard - for his own pirate series, titled Black Sails.
Bosses at U.S. cable network Starz have ordered eight episodes after learning that Bay's project will follow the history of young John Silver 20 years before his legless villain Long John Silver appears in Stevenson's novel.
Filming is expected to begin in South Africa later this year.
Meanwhile, Izzard and director Steve Barron are working on a Treasure Island sequel.

Deadline reports that Paramount and Indian Paintbrush are the latest to join the foreign book craze, having pointed resources toward Syndrome E — a soon-to-be-translated, first-in-a-trilogy French novel from Franck Thilliez. Said to be a mix of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Se7en, Syndrome E centers on Lucie Hennebelle, a detective who investigates “an extremely rare and spectacularly violent film from the 1950s,” after his friend watches the film and develops blindness.
Five men have been left dead on account of its raw power, and Hennebelle starts working with a fellow detective to uncover the secret behind “what has to be the most disturbing and powerful film ever made,” created by someone who could be “the personification of evil and the origins of violence.”
Dragon Tattoo‘s screenwriter, Steve Zaillian, will produce through Film Rites (with Garret Basch), along with Steven Rales and Mark Roybal.

When it comes to the movies, we love to talk about actors, and directors, and trailers – but one of the most important elements of any great film is the screenplay. The script is the blueprint of the film – the very foundation upon which all great cinema is built. So, with that in mind, here are some of the scripts currently making news in Hollywood. Sony has reportedly acquired the rights to writer Joe Lupinacci’s pitch for an action-adventure film entitled The Royal Honour Society. The literary-themed period piece appears to be something of an inverse of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – with writers like H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jules Verne as the main characters. What those authors will do in the script hasn’t...

We chat to director Cary Fukunaga about adapting a 150 year old story, casting Michael Fassbender, and his upcoming projects…
Cary Fukunaga’s bleakly beautiful Jane Eyre sits comfortably amongst the best cinematic adaptations of Charlotte Brontë’s novel, and features an outstanding lead performance from Mia Wasikowska. Only its director’s second feature (the first being 2009 Spanish-language immigration drama Sin Nombre), Jane Eyre is now out on DVD in the UK.
We spoke to the film’s young director Cary Fukunaga, about how he avoided making a “cheeseball” glossy period drama, Michael Fassbender’s teeth, his upcoming sci-fi and Us Civil War projects, and why he wants to fit a horse with rubber shoes…
This interview contains potential spoilers for Jane Eyre.

How many versions of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have been released on film? It’s an astounding number at 123 film versions. It may not be quite as many as Dracula or Frankenstein, but it’s in the running if not right on their cape tails. Each age of in horror history attempts to lay its own claim to this tale of chemistry meets the modern scientific man meets the Monster. Who of us can forget Frederic March with his near pompadour hairstyle slightly hunched over with eyebrows all-a-caterpillar? How about Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde; that was Hammer getting cheeky with all of us who had decided that simply redoing Universal horror stories wasn’t good enough in 1971. So what happened between 1886 when Stevenson first unleashed his epic literary tale and the 1970’s when Dr. Jekyll became Dr. Black and...

Chicago – If you hear an unusual sound this weekend, it may be Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jonathan Swift spinning in their graves. The writers who have become an essential part of any growing person’s library have now been associated with a piece of 3D junk that insults the intelligence of everyone who sees it. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is not a trip worth taking.

I know what some of you are already thinking. I’m being too hard on it. It’s a kid’s movie. It’s 3D fun and if it introduces some great authors to another generation than this cynical critic is being predictably belligerent. I wish I could agree. I would love to support a “dumbed down” version of classic fiction that might get young viewers doing something that seems increasingly uncommon – cracking a book. But does it have to be this far down?...

After making a boatload of money—that’s the equivalent to one hundred millions dollars if you didn’t know—Journey to the Center of the Earth was almost guaranteed a sequel. Proving they could bring the fictional worlds of Jules Verne to life and somehow make it relevant to a bunch of kids barely able to put down their Smartphones long enough to read a magazine let alone a dense volume of literature, nothing would stop the studio machine from taking the plunge to Atlantis in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Our thirst for family adventure movies is never quenched, and the promise of yet another involving a mystical, far-off land packed with interesting creatures promises big things. Carving a niche in such a market is Canadian filmmaker Brad Peyton, the debut director of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore that got mixed reviews in 2010. Tasked with breathing life back into the Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise from 2008, and with the second film simply shortened to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Peyton’s shaky foray into family feature filmmaking has been redeemed.

In case you haven't had your fill of onscreen, detail-oriented pipe smokers, CBS has now green lit the pilot of a series called (wait for it) "Elementary," a new Sherlock Holmes adaptation set in modern day New York City.
As Deadline.com points out, "Sherlock Holmes is very much in the zeitgeist right now," what with the two recent Guy Ritchie films of Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. as a brawnier brain than most, and the BBC's current modern-day take called "Sherlock", co-written by Steven Moffat, the man behind the most recent series' of Dr. Who.
It might not be the most original idea, but, as the Emmys website points out, the Holmes tales has already inspired popular TV series "House" (House... Holmes... can you see it yet?) among others.
Details of the new show are scarce, but fans of Conan Doyle probably shouldn't expect anything too faithful to the original.

The La Weekly's Karina Longworth has turned a lunch with Elvis Mitchell, a lot of research and several phone calls into today's must-read. "One of the best known, and definitely most controversial, living film critics in America, Mitchell is both irresistibly charming and legendarily incapable of playing by the rules, or perhaps simply oblivious to them." And now: "He's been brought to Lacma as the embodiment of a major break from business as usual at the museum's film department." In one of the best pieces of film-related reporting I've seen in a long while, Karina outlines two histories, first, that of Lacma's evolution from "one of the city's premier destinations for cinephiles" to an institution with a "strategy to plumb the film industry for patrons," and second, that of the "former New York Times film critic who lunches at swank restaurants with movie stars and drives off in a cherry-red convertible.

Actor turned teacher, he quit the screen at the height of his fame
There are some actors who, having disappeared from the public gaze early in their careers, always prompt the question, "Whatever happened to ... ?" The answer, in the case of Paul Massie, who has died of lung cancer aged 78, is that, at the height of his fame on films and television, he gave it up at the age of 40 to teach drama at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
The son of a Baptist minister, Massie was born Arthur Massé in the city of St Catharines, in the Niagara region of Ontario. Although he was brought up in Canada, almost his entire 16-year acting career was in Britain. In fact, the only film he made in Canada was his first, Philip Leacock's High Tide at Noon (1957), a Rank Organisation melodrama shot in Nova Scotia. Although it was a bit part,...
