As an openly gay actor, Ryan Spahn was determined to tell his story. “Nora Highland” was originally developed to be an Off-Broadway play, but when the pandemic forced a shutdown, Spahn had to rethink. The story explores the casting process surrounding an iconic gay character in a new Broadway revival.
A fundraising event with actors Michael Urie and Tessa Thompson involved a reading, and prompted Spahn to consider Zoom. In the end, Spahn turned director and cinematographer as he filmed his production via Zoom. “I was directing the actors from my apartment via Zoom into their homes. Nobody interacted in-person. The actors had to do their own lights, microphones, set decorating, costumes, props, meals, etc. They had to be super game for it,” Spahn says.
He adds shooting online meant “safety, with regards to Covid-19 and the pandemic, was not something we had to deal with.”
The film will now get a digital release,...

The 32nd annual NewFest, New York’s LGBTQ Film Festival is bringing queer cinema to audience’s homes this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The diverse offerings at this year’s virtual festival should delight LGBTQ cinephiles of many tastes. The queer film fest will offer screenings through October 27, and the following five movies are some of the best on display.
“Ammonite”
NewFest 2020 is not completely devoid of in-person events, thanks to a select few drive-in screenings. The first of which was “Ammonite,” the highest profile awards contender of the lineup. The film by Francis Lee depicts the real life relationship between paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) and a young woman (Saorise Ronan) in the 1840s. Those in attendance at the Queen’s Drive-In were lucky enough not only to experience the sweeping period romance, but also witnessed Winslet virtually present the inaugural World Queer Visionary Award to director Francis Lee.

From the British royal family to a certain Revolution-era musical, these phenomenal groups of actors took the New York theater scene by storm in 2015. “Clinton the Musical”There was a shabby charm to New World Stages’ premiere of this wacky political operetta, which ultimately reflected the tumultuous era it depicted; the Clinton years, let’s face it, were a hot mess. Paul and Michael Hodge’s homage to Bill and Hillary, however, capably parodied the biggest scandal of the ’90s, thanks in large part to the most game group of actors Off-Broadway. The appeal of Tom Galantich, Duke Lafoon, Judy Gold, and Kerry Butler as everyone’s favorite would-be Madame President proved unimpeachable. “Gloria”Clever double casting featured heavily in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ twisted ode to office culture, which premiered this summer at Vineyard Theatre. Because I can’t find a decent way to display the series of photos, you’ll just have to go look at the perfect joy that is John Barrowman building an adult Big Wheel, then riding said Big Wheel. His life is so much more fun than mine.
Coming down from that high, the Family Research Council says that marriage equality threatens the wellbeing of countless families. The whole thing is worth a read, but I liked this passage best. “Consensual homosexual unions might cause no apparent distress to persons proximate to them, but they diminish an institution – marriage – without which, civilization will erode ever more quickly. And in case one hasn’t noticed, natural marriage in the United States is in enough trouble as it is.” Sounds like a personal problem to me.

What a difference a year makes.
Last year at this time, we were excited that actor Michael Urie was going to be back on our televisions in the CBS sitcom, Partners. Unfortuantely the series premiered last fall to not-so-great reviews and low ratings, so CBS pulled it quickly.
Not one to be down and out for long, Urie is busy promoting his directorial film debut, He’s Way More Famous Than You, which was written by Halley Feiffer and Urie’s partner Ryan Spahn and co-stars Jesse Eisenberg, Vanessa Williams, Mamie Gummer, Ben Stiller and Ralph Macchio. The former Ugly Betty star also is wowing audiences off-Broadway with his one-man show Buyer & Cellar. The Jonathan Tollins play about a young man who takes a job at Barbra Streisand‘s underground personal mall (and meets the lady herself) did so well in its initial run that it’s moving to a larger theater beginning next month.

Having appeared in such projects as the HBO series "Bored to Death" and the Noah Baumbach films "Margot at the Wedding" and "The Squid and the Whale," actress Halley Feiffer is way more famous than a lot of people. That just doesn't necessarily translate to Twitter.
"I really don't have that many Twitter followers, which I'm really sad about," Feiffer, 28, joked during a recent interview with HuffPost Entertainment. "I really want people to think I'm more famous, and that happens when you have more Twitter followers."
That could happen soon enough. Feiffer co-wrote and stars in the indie comedy "He's Way More Famous Than You," a caustic film about Feiffer's alcoholic alter ego, an actress also named Halley Feiffer. Directed by former "Ugly Betty" star Michael Urie (who also appears as "himself" in the film) and featuring cameo appearances from Jesse Eisenberg and Ben Stiller, "He's Way More Famous Than You...

Would it be bitchy to refer to Michael Urie as "the gay guy from "Ugly Betty?" Well, sure. But Urie does it himself in "He's Way More Famous Than You," his directorial debut, which stars Halley Feiffer and Urie's own partner, Ryan Spahn, as a screwed-up brother-and-sister team desperate to get an indie film off the ground in the hopes of saving their flagging careers. For Urie, it all gets a bit meta, since he directs the film-within-the-film, too. And sure, it's a well worn cliché that all actors want to direct, but Urie says that directing was always his goal. He spoke with Upcoming-Movies.com about finally getting a chance to step behind the camera. Upcoming-Movies.com: So, Michael, how did you come to this and why did you want to do it?...

As an alcoholic narcissistic, nightmare inversion (explosion?) of herself, she squeals across the screen like a manic pixie banshee girl, dead set on making her own movie, which will, in her mind, revitalize her in-the-toilet career. To do this, she finagles the help of her brother Ryan (co-writer Ryan Spahn) and eventually, with much begging and whining down the pipeline, his partner Michael Urie, aka the gay guy from Ugly Betty, aka the guy who is gonna...

A self-referential, insider farce about the hunger for Hollywood stardom, He's Way More Famous Than You is—like its leading lady—as unhinged as it is hilarious. Still clinging to the fact that years earlier she costarred in The Squid and the Whale, Halley Feiffer (as herself) aims to reignite her faded career by producing a five-minute trailer for a 10-page treatment that will hopefully be developed at a film festival screenwriting lab. Feiffer reimagines herself as a drunken mess consumed only with recapturing the red carpet spotlight, and her plans to produce her semi-autobiographical work soon involve casting her gay wannabe-actor brother, Ryan (Ryan Spahn), enlisting as director Ryan's boyfriend, Michael Urie (Urie, the film's real director), competing for ...

It sort of blew my mind when I realized that Ralph Macchio is 51 years old, especially since Pat Morita was the same age when they worked together for the original Karate Kid. (To repeat: Daniel is now as old as Mr. Miyagi. More importantly, this means you are also much, much older than you care to admit.) Both actors are forever associated with their roles in that 1984 film, a point underscored by Macchio’s cameo in the upcoming indie, He’s Way More Famous Than You. The solution to that is get more famous, which funny enough is the plot of her latest film He's Way More Famous Than You. In this indie comedy, penned by the actress and Ryan Spahn, Feiffer plays herself at a particularly low moment. Once considered an up-and-comer, the lead's prospects are sinking fast as she loses her boyfriend and her agent. So she joins forces with her brother (Spahn) and his boyfriend and with a pilfered screenplay, plenty of sangria and a plucky never-say-die attitude, she sets out on a mission to make herself a celebrity ...
