According to reports, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are developing a new ‘patriotic’, live-action “Popeye the Sailor” feature, to be scripted by Michael Caleo (“The Sopranos”):
"...created by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, ‘Popeye’ debuted in the 1929 comic strip “Thimble Theater”.
“The comic was then turned into a series of theatrical cartoon shorts by Fleischer Studios for Paramount Pictures…
“…and featured in comic books, video games, advertisements and a whole lot more.
“Robert Altman directed a live-action ‘Popeye’ movie in 1980. Produced by Robert Evans for Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, it starred Robin Willams as Popeye, Shelley Duvall as ‘Olive Oyl’, Paul L. Smith as ‘Bluto’, Paul Dooley as ‘J. Wellington Wimpy’, Richard Libertini as ‘George W. Geezil’ and Ray Walston as ‘Poopfeck Pappy’…”

Legendary comic book and cartoon character Popeye the Sailor is once again coming to the big screen, as Chernin Entertainment and King Features officially confirm that a big-budged live-action adaptation is in the works. This will be the first time that the character has been revisited in a live-action format since the late Robin Williams played Popeye in the 1980 movie. This has been confirmed exclusively by Variety, as the magazine reported on the movie being in the works.
As stated, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are working on the movie and will probably be in charge of its production and distribution, securing a worldwide theatrical distribution. So far, there aren’t many details available, but the movie is supposedly going to be a big-budget feature with Michael Caleo attached as the screenwriter as of the time of writing. No casting rumors have been revealed either, and the movie doesn’t...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise.""Evil Dead Rise," the latest installment in the now 40-odd-year-old "Evil Dead" franchise, is filled to the brim with evidence of writer/director Lee Cronin's bonafides toward being a fan of the series. While the film isn't merely a work of fan service, the movie is suffused with references to the earlier "Evil Dead" films, from Deadites screaming "Dead by dawn!" to a very particular clock being seen at a cabin in the film's opening sequence.
Yet Cronin isn't content with paying homage to just the "Evil Dead" series — in addition to multiple references to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," "Evil Dead Rise" contains some latent homages to numerous other horror films, including Lamberto Bava's similar demons-loose-in-a-high-rise splatter opus, "Demons 2." Most surprisingly, however, "Evil Dead Rise" appears to have a good deal in common with another Sam Raimi film,...

Ignored, maligned and hammered out into an ‘Alan Smithee’ extended cut for TV, David Lynch’s outstanding Sci-fi epic arrives on 4K Ultra HD, finally achieving the visual opulence on home video that it had in 70mm prints at the end of 1984. The fractured, de-Lynched storyline can be argued over, but the amazing design and arresting characterizations never fail to impress — Lynch attracted a world-class cast of movie stars and used them well. Even if it’s described as a hundred fragmented scenes from a larger narrative, they’re superlative fragments. Lynch should have been authorized to make an alternate cut, his own completely personal ‘impressionist’ version of the Frank Herbert story.

“A Mixed Can Of Spinach”
By Raymond Benson
When I first saw Popeye on the big screen on its initial release in December of 1980, I was disappointed and a little appalled. I was (and still am) a huge Robert Altman fan, and I had been expecting great things. The film touted the first motion picture appearance by Robin Williams as well (although he’d had in a small role in a 1977 picture). Anticipation was high.
Popeye received very mixed reviews, but it made a decent amount of money at the box office, and became an object of derision in Hollywood for years. Altman was unable to get big studio backing for over a decade, so he moved to Europe and made small pictures there.
Then—home video turned the movie around. Popeye became a best-selling VHS tape for children, and its reputation improved.

Dave Bautista likes his space franchises, it seems, and he's joining Denis Villeneuve's Dune reboot.
Denis Villeneuve's Dune remake has been pretty slow to get going. Adapting Dune is one of those cinematic white whales, one that infamously devoured years of Alejandro Jodorowsky's life only never to actually go before cameras, and a 1984 film that actually did get filmed but which director David Lynch ultimately "Alan Smitheed" himself from. But what Legendary is planning for the Dune franchise might actually stand a chance, with Villeneuve possibly planning to split that first book into two movies or more, rather than make the usual mistake of trying to pretend it has a complete story that can be told in three hours. So far the cast includes Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, but other than those two, there hasn't been much to report on the casting front.

Pieces is one of those movies that horror fans instantly fall in love with. While some would write it off as just another bad movie, others will love those moments of unintentional humour, especially from the dubbed version. This is what makes the Arrow Video Pieces: Limited Edition release on Blu-ray so much fun.

Earlier this week, we lost one of the world's great sources of laughter, joy, and creative wonder with the passing of Gene Wilder. While Wilder and his endearing benevolence will be sorely missed, his comedic genius will live on through his work, including 1986's Haunted Honeymoon, which will now be released on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber a bit sooner than originally expected.
Blu-ray.com reports that Kino Lorber will release their Haunted Honeymoon Blu-ray on September 6th, bumping it up from its initially scheduled September 27th debut.
Wilder co-wrote, directed, and starred in Haunted Honeymoon alongside his wife, the late, great Gilda Radner. According to Amazon, the special features for the Blu-ray will include trailers, and you can view the cover art and synopsis below.

Sonny Boy is not a “feel-good” movie. I’ll just go ahead and get that out of the way right now. It’s actually kind of a drag. That’s not to say that it isn’t a well-made and effective movie, because it is, but man, was that movie hard to watch. In the interest of full-disclosure, this was my first time viewing this horribly mean, morally reprehensible little movie, featuring David Carradine in drag. I spoke with Jimmy Terror prior to watching, and he had basically the same issue as I did. It’s a good-ass movie, but it makes you feel like shit. Similar in that regard to movies like Last House on the Left, or Last House on Dead End Street, there is obviously talent behind, and in front of the camera, with a unique, albeit gut-wrenching screenplay, and excellent performances from most involved.
So what...

Shout Factory unveils a neglected cult item with its recuperation of Sonny Boy, a tawdry late 1980s obscurity with some awesome Wtf grotesqueries. Although its creators, both then and now, insist on the narrative’s notable subtexts as an allegory on child abuse and toxic familial allegiance, the film is never quite elevated beyond its grindhouse elements. Notably, David Carradine stars as a redneck transvestite (whose gender identity remains undefined) as the caring part of a vicious hillbilly couple who raise a kidnapped orphan to kill and rob members of the local rural community. Its lurid set-up should definitely interest cineastes who can appreciate a bit of tastelessness in their exploitation films, but Robert Martin Carroll’s provocative directorial debut devolves into a surreal fairy tale with an undernourished finale.

As diehard horror fans know, Leatherface wasn't the only cinematic killer to rev up a chainsaw, as evidenced by 1982's Pieces, a cult slasher film hitting shelves as a special three-disc Blu-ray on February 23rd from Grindhouse Releasing:
