Craig Robinson’s career is marked by moments of high comedy, but his latest project has him relying on something different — choreography.
The actor, known for his turns on “The Office,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Hot Tub Time Machine,” among others, is working on a new project on behalf of Procter & Gamble that aims to get consumers to harness their sense of smell. In an ad that offers a new version of Michael Sembello’s 1983 hit “Maniac,” Robinson dances his way through a story of a “small town guy on a laundry night” who is encouraged by the scent of Gain, the P&g detergent and cleaning product with a smell that has proven to be a powerful draw over the years. “I’m a Gain-iac,” he declares.
Somewhere among the outtakes, says Robinson, “there is an extended dance version. Watch out. I was all over the place.”

Break out the leg warmers because it’s ’80s Night on “Dancing with the Stars” and there’ll be a lot of… tangos?
Four of the top 12 couples are tasked with tangos this week, so prepare for lots of side steps. Kaitlyn Bristowe is one of the four, which is a good thing since, like Derek Hough pointed out last week, it’s been getting too same-y with her pretty but similar lyrical routines the past couple of weeks.
Two dances will make their season debuts: jazz, which is assigned to three couples, and contemporary, which Johnny Weir got. And if you’ve seen any of his figure skating routines, you know he will nail this. Also, it’s to “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” so this is going to be a moment.
Here are the Week 5 dances:
Monica Aldama and Val Chmerkovskiy: tango (“Tainted Love” by Soft Cell...

Perhaps one of the oddest inspirations which resulted from William Lustig’s grindhouse narrative debut, which became a major cult classic, was Michael Sembello’s song, reconstituted for Adrian Lyne’s 1983 film Flash Dance, netting an Academy Award nomination with its new lyrics.
In 2012, Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur scripted a remake made by Franck Khalfoun and starring Elijah Wood, relocating the narrative from New York to Los Angeles, although the result didn’t have the same impact. Perhaps its because Lustig’s original, which was the director’s lateral move from pornography, is itself somewhat derivative.

‘Dance Til Dawn’ at 30: The Team Reflects on ‘Unusual Casting Process,’ #MeToo Relevance and DJ Dick
The spring and summer of 1988 were consumed with a writers’ strike within the film and television industry, but one project that launched in the fall came out of it unscathed: “Dance ‘Til Dawn,” an original television movie about Hoover High’s senior prom first aired on NBC Oct. 23, 1988. The movie was a who’s who of 1980s television — from Kelsey Grammer and Alan Thicke, to Christina Applegate, Tempestt Bledsoe and Tracey Gold — and its multi-generational casting allowed it to be an early pioneer of content aimed at a co-viewing audience. It was also a love letter to Los Angeles, utilizing iconic locations such as the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel as its soundstage. Now, 30 years after its initial release, “Dance ‘Til Dawn” also finds new relevance within the era of #MeToo and Time’s Up.

When will “Glow” come back for its second season? Netflix has answered that question with a new date-announcement preview video in which the “gorgeous ladies of wrestling” perform to “Maniac” by Michael Sembello (watch above). The show will be back on Friday, June 29, with more big hair and body slams. And that could be good news for the show’s Emmy chances.
Voting for Emmy nominations closes on June 25, four days before “Glow” returns, so its new episodes won’t be able to influence the television academy during that round as they consider the first season of the series, which aired way back in June 2017. But promotion for the show leading into its second season will keep it fresh in mind for voters, a strategy that has helped shows like “Mad Men” and “Orange is the New Black” in seasons past. And then if “Glow” earns nominations the second season...

Here’s the famed “Flashdance” sequence:
Season 2 will follow the ladies as they become local celebrities and are forced to deal with the ins and outs of fame. Ruth (Brie) and Debbie (Gilpin) must confront issues in their friendship as they make a season of TV together, and Sam (Marc Maron) now has a teenage daughter living with him as he needs to produce 20 episodes. As the logline says: “The wrestling is harder, the stakes are higher, and the hair is even bigger.”
In the promo video, Maron barges into the locker room in typical grumpy fashion.
“Hey, what’s going on here?” he asks. “We got a show to do. What is this? Come on, let’s go.”

While “Stranger Things” made audiences nostalgic for conventional 80s pop culture, its sister show “Glow” explored a lesser-known phenomena from that era: professional women’s wrestling promotions. Now back for a new season, it looks like the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are just getting started.
Loosely adapted from the 80s show of the same name, “Glow” tells the story of Ruth (Alison Brie), an aspiring actress thrown in the world of women’s wrestling. The first season explores the women’s new lives as professional wrestlers. Season 2, which premieres in June, looks like it’ll focus more on the struggles that come with making a television show out of them.
But in this first teaser, the ladies seem more than ready for the challenge. Getting ready in the locker room to Michael Sembello’s “Maniac,” they lip-sync and dance passionately into the camera in a definite homage to the “Flashdance” music video.

I added some music to this. pic.twitter.com/UwjhTKpaeu - Bob Hagh (@BobHagh) June 22, 2017 Zola the gorilla lives at the Dallas Zoo. He loves to dance. This is really all you need to know ahead of watching this hilariously on-point video, which shows Zola twirling his heart out inside a tub of water. A Dallas news station covered Zola's moves and set the video to "Flashdance. . . What a Feeling" from the 1983 film, but it was video producer Bob Hagh who kicked things up a notch, instead adding Michael Sembello's "Maniac" to the clip and sharing it on Twitter. Please hit play and get your whole entire life, because Zola sure is. Oh, and you can watch the original video of Zola cutting a rug below, but it's really not as good without music.

He's legit got moves, this gorilla! In 2011, a gorilla named Zola became a viral sensation due to a video of him breakdancing at the Calgary Zoo. Nowadays, he's chilling at the Dallas Zoo and is still dancing, as seen in a video of him splashing around in a swimming pool enrichment session off habitat, which was posted on the zoo's YouTube page earlier this week. Bob Hagh, a video producer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, fixed the clip for them; He redubbed it with Michael Sembello's iconic 1983 song "Maniac," from the movie Flashdance, and posted the improved video on Twitter. Naturally, it's gone viral. Zola spins around and waves his arms,...

One of the most self-assured directorial debuts of the 70’s was Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Not only was it a breakthrough film for the master of Giallo, but it was also a box office hit and had critics buzzing, regardless if they liked it or not. Although Argento would go on to perfect his craft in later films, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage went a long way in popularizing the Giallo genre and laid the groundwork for later classics like Deep Red. A difficult film to discuss without spoiling many of its most impressive and famous scenes, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is a fairly straightforward murder mystery, albeit with many twists, turns and one of the best surprise endings of all time. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is getting ready to make a fast-paced comedic charge through a proverbial hornet.s (or "horny") nest of a box-office landscape dominated by Fifty Shades of Grey. However bleak of a scenario that may be, the cast of the film are nevertheless making their rounds doing their best to get people talking about this fun-filled time-bending romp of a sequel. Appearing last night on Conan, co-star, Craig Robinson decided that music may be the best way to indelibly leave a lasting impression on potential ticket-buyers. Breaking out a conveniently placed keyboard, he goes into a HTTM2-themed musical number that would make a certain "steel town girl on a Saturday night" proud. Robinson.s movie-plugging Yankovic-esque rendition of Michael Sembello.s iconic theme to 1983.s Flashdance is clearly fun and upbeat enough to even get Christian Grey to convert his collection of ropes and blindfolds...

Taylor Swift and Jimmy Fallon have been late night BFFs ever since the host took over The Tonight Show, appearing in a number of sketches together (like Fallon's ubiquitous "Ew!"). But as they proved in a goofy bit during Tuesday's episode, their friendship also extends to an extracurricular activity: Jumbotron dancing at New York sporting events.
"We used to go all out," Swift says in the above clip. "We were famous Jumbotron dancers." They then take a "nice, casual walk down memory lane" by looking at some of their favorite...

As a composer, I'm quick to acknowledge the role of music in setting the tone for a horror film, and while theme songs with lyrics and vocals can be just as effective as an instrumental score, there are definitely risks involved: along with clothing and hairstyles, songs tend to anchor a film to the year it was made, and as tastes change, a pop tune can be exposed as a quaint and silly relic of its decade. Then again, some of those tracks were pretty goofy to begin with, and nothing could have saved them. With that said, I love every one of these oddball themes to death (even the truly painful ones), so I'd like to share with you the best of the weirdest, straight from one of my more... uh, let's say “eccentric” party playlists. Let's rock! Fat Boys: “Are You Ready for Freddy?” (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,...

In 1983 Jennifer Beals removed her welding mask, donned a tight T-shirt and doused herself in water whilst dancing to Michael Sembello's infectious synthpop song, "Maniac." Pop culture was never the same.
For all you "Flashdance" fanatics we bear good news: "Flashdance: The Musical," a stage interpretation of the iconic film, opens in Seattle this week before heading to Portland, Tempe And Costa Mesa over the next two months.
If you cannot believe "Flashdance" has not been made into a theatrical production yet, you're not alone. A Broadway version of the show was proposed in 2001 but failed to materialize, according to Variety. In fact, the original film wasn't meant to be a film at all. Matthew Hydzik, who stars as Nick, explained to The Advocate:

Show a lot of things happening at once. Remind everyone what’s going on. And with every shot you show a little improvement. To show it all would take too long. That’s called a montage. Even The Monster Squad needed a montage. And as we all know, every montage needs a peppy song.
Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult favorite The Monster Squad makes its triumphant return to B-Sides with one of those staples of 1980’s cinema: the montage. Before these kids can go off into battle against Dracula, the Wolf Man, and the Gillman, they first need an upbeat musical montage showing them getting their act together in preparation of saving the world. Cue Michael Sembello’s catchy pop rock number “Rock Until You Drop”.
As Trey Parker and Matt Stone established on “South Park” and again in Team America: World Police, you’re gonna need a montage!

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Whether or not you’ve recovered from Pia Toscano’s shocking elimination from American Idol, the Season 10 show will trudge on Wednesday night with the Top 8 performing a “Songs From the Movies” theme. On paper, it could be a terrific 90 minutes of music — as long as the contestants aren’t limited to a list of 20 treacly ballads from Disney soundtracks, Celine Dion, and Bryan Adams. In my spirit of undying/naive optimisim, I’ve cooked up song suggestions for the remaining finalists. Ch-ch-check ‘em out, then brainstorm some ideas of your own in the comments. And for all my Idol news and commentary,...

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Directed by: John Whitesell
Cast: Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson, Portia Doubleday, Faizon Love, Jessica Lucas
Running Time: 1 hr 47 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 18, 2011
Plot: After his son (Jackson) witnesses a murder, FBI agent Malcolm Turner (Lawrence) sends his son to the Georgia Girls School for Arts. There, they disguise themselves as two women, whilst trying to find evidence related to the murder case.
Who’S It For?: Unless you’re a die hard fan of Martin Lawrence, Big Mommas is bound to be a disappointment, probably even for those who think that cross-dressing movies are funny.
Expectations: This wasn’t screened for critics, which is never a good sign (like an idiot, I caught the first showing this morning). The Big Momma franchise (yeah, it’s a franchise now) isn’t one of the top regarded series of its kind – and...

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Bill Lustig’s infamous flick Maniac, Grindhouse Releasing has a struck a new 35mm print, and it’s coming to a North American theater near you!
Maniac earned instant notoriety in 1980 as the most graphic and disturbing of all slasher films, thanks to the gruesome special effects wizardry of Tom Savini. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert called for their audience to boycott Maniac, feminists protested the film’s brutal violence, and other critics simply reviled the film as “sick” and “dirty.” The poster alone, in which the Maniac wields a bloody knife and freshly-removed woman's scalp, sparked public outrage.
The new release of Maniac begins October 29 and 30, 2010, at the Egyptian Theatre in Seattle, Washington, continuing into next year. Mr. Lustig will be on hand to introduce screenings in Los Angeles (November 5, Nuart Theatre) and New York (Landmark’s Sunshine, November 19 and 20.)

I was too young to catch the theatrical release of Bill Lustig's brutal low-budget slasher film Maniac in 1980, but I did see the film on VHS in the mid-80s. Watching Blue Underground's all-region 30th Anniversary Maniac Blu-Ray, which hits the streets on October 26th, brought back some ugly memories with high-definition clarity. Unlike many video upgrades that rehash readily available films without adding significant value, Blue Underground's Maniac -- over 7 hours of extras are included -- is a model for how to handle a catalog Blu-Ray release.
Frank Zito (Joe Spinell) is a sweaty psycho who was abused by his mother. When he sees a woman, he sees a mother. In response, he trolls the streets, beaches, and subways in search of murder victims. After the killings, he retreats to his dingy New York City bachelor pad, which is filled with cheap art, mannequins, and body parts.

William Lustig's raw and sleazy Maniac is making its Blu-Ray debut this Halloween. Our friends at Blue Underground (who just knocked it out of the park with that City of the Living Dead Blu-Ray release) have set an October 26 release date. Expect special features from previous releases to be imported as well as new interviews with Caroline Munro, Tom Savini, composer Jay Chattaway and songwriters Michael Sembello and Dennis Matkosky. Universal Home Entertainment, meanwhile, has revealed the cover art for their October 19 Blu-Ray release of Psycho . Specs can be found in this previous news item .
