With Spooky Season firmly in the rear view mirror, Trace and I are now mid-way through our month on Toxic Masculinity. And while we probably could have counted Apt Pupil (and maybe even Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2), we officially kicked things off with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.
Things get considerably darker with our second entry: Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel‘s Deadgirl. The extreme film follows two high school teenage boys – Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) – who discover a zombie girl (Jenny Spain) in an abandoned hospital and make the horrific decision to use her as a sex object rather than alert the authorities.
As Rickie struggles with his guilty conscience, Jt recruits other “friends” like Wheeler (Eric Podnar) to assault the girl. Things get out of hand, however, when a pair of jocks, including Johnny (Andrew Dipalma) – the boyfriend of Rickie’s crush,...

Poker Face pulled off many things in its debut season. With its murder-mystery-of-the-week plot in a new spin on the detective genre, the Natasha Lyonne-starring Peacock series from Rian Johnson revived the concept of procedural television for streaming, saw Benjamin Bratt turn a catchy Blues Traveler song into a poetic monologue and recruited Star Wars legend Phil Tippett for one episode’s special effects. But perhaps most impressive, Poker Face assembled an eye-popping roster of guest stars.

It’s a busy week for horror with The Pope’s Exorcist and Renfield arriving on the big screen. The latter reimagines classic Universal Monsters characters with a comedic twist, though it’s hardly the first to depict bloodsuckers in a humorous way. This week’s streaming picks celebrate vampire horror-comedies, giving you plenty of options to sink your teeth into.
Here’s where to watch these titles this week.

Writer/Director Noah Segan’s feature debut brings a charming soft touch to the vampire tale, favoring dad jokes and affecting bonds over savage bloodletting. Hot off the heels of his fan-favourite Knives Out sequel, director Rian Johnson is releasing his debut TV series, Poker Face.
Starring Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne as show-lead Charlie Cale, a woman with an extraordinary ability to discern whether someone’s lying, the show follows Charlie as she hits the road, stumbling upon a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.
Here’s everything we know about Johnson’s highly anticipated TV series Poker Face, including its Glass Onion connection, all the expected celebrity cameos and more.
Will it be connected to Glass Onion?
At the moment, it is unknown what kind of Glass Onion Easter eggs might appear in the series.
However, in its first official Television Critics Association exclusive look, released on 13 January, one of its character’s voiceover lines makes an obvious nod to Johnson’s newest mystery-comedy, saying: “But...

Have you watched "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion" and found yourself in desperate need of more tales of murder from writer/director Rian Johnson? Or perhaps you've binge-watched both seasons of "Russian Doll" and are ready for another show where Natasha Lyonne attempts to solve a mystery with a lackadaisical attitude and some sharp wit. Or maybe you just want to see Adrien Brody, Stephanie Hsu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ron Perlman, Benjamin Bratt, Chloë Sevigny, Lil Rel Howery, Clea Duvall, Tim Blake Nelson, and a whole clown car of other acclaimed actors all in one place.
If any of the above apply, then "Poker Face" might be the show for you. Created, written, and directed by Johnson, the 10-episode case-of-the-week murder mystery series stars Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a casino hostess turned detective with an uncanny ability to know whether or not someone is telling the truth. Through two movies, writer/director Rian Johnson has demonstrated a remarkable ability to craft mysteries that can attract an A-list ensemble for the ages. Both "Knives Out" and its sequel "Glass Onion," which was recently released by Netflix, are led by Daniel Craig as ace detective Benoit Blanc, but he is joined by a slew of great supporting stars. This time around, that list included Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, and Kate Hudson, among many others.
Johnson has also, in both films, managed to include a staple from his filmography in the form of actor Noah Segan, who has been working with the filmmaker since as far back as "Brick." Segan played the lovable Trooper Wagner in the first film, and Johnson found a way to bring Segan back this time around, even though he was telling a completely different story. As anyone who has seen the film can attest,...

In a film featuring a (in some cases literal) murderer’s row of movie-star performances, the “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” character that has received the most ink since its Netflix premiere on December 23 is Derol, the Corona-toting slacker who briefly appears in only a handful of scenes — but steals every one of them. Played by Noah Segan, who has appeared in every one of Rian Johnson’s films to date, Derol has taken on a life of his own, becoming a favorite even on the periphery of the murder-mystery action, and perhaps because of that, a meme.

The luxurious Greek island estate where Glass Onion is set has been listed for sale on Zillow for 450m (£374m).
Wealthy fans of Netflix’s hit murder mystery sequel may end up disappointed, however – because the property doesn’t actually exist.
Released on the streaming service before Christmas, Glass Onion is a sequel to the hit 2019 whodunnit Knives Out.
Written and directed by The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson, the film finds ace detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) embroiled in a murder mystery on the private island of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton).
The island setting includes a gigantic crystaline structure (the “glass onion” of the title) built at the centre of a luxury villa.
A listing on the property website Zillow displays the island, described as “Glass Onion Greek Isle Commune: Multi-Layered Living in Paradise”.

Rian Johnson probably could have done a great many things in the wake of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." While I'm more aware than most as to the divisive nature of the filmmaker's entry into a galaxy far, far away, at more than 1.3 billion worldwide, it's one of the 20 highest-grossing movies of all time. In the wake of that blockbuster success, Johnson decided to take a step back and do something much smaller (but not too small) in the form of 2019's "Knives Out."
Not that a filmmaker making a smaller movie after a big success is anything new, as Joss Whedon made "Much Ado About Nothing" after making "The Avengers," for example. But rarely do those smaller films themselves go on to become gigantic,...

One of my favorite films of the year, Blood Relatives follows 115-year-old vampire (Noah Segan), whose eternal road trip through the US countryside is interrupted when he discovers he has a teenage daughter (Victoria Moroles) navigating her own vampiric growing pains (and fangs).
With Blood Relatives now streaming on Shudder, I had the great pleasure of talking with Segan about the making of his family-centric horror comedy, including working with Victoria Moroles and the heartfelt story of how he came to acquire the car featured in the film.
Blood Relatives synopsis: "Francis, a 115-year-old Yiddish vampire, still looks 35. He’s been roaming American backroads in his beat-up muscle car for decades, keeping to himself, and liking it that way. One day, Jane, a teenager, shows up. She says she’s his daughter, and she’s got the fangs to prove it. They go on the road, deciding whether to sink their teeth into family life.

"Knives Out" is one of the best movies of the past decade. There, I said it. The film has some very cool and inventive visuals, is brilliantly written by Rian Johnson, with plenty of memorable twists and jokes, a very memorable sweater, and an exquisite ensemble cast you just want to follow for hours on end. Not only is Daniel Craig endlessly watchable, hilarious, and charismatic as the mysterious Benoit Blanc, but the rest of the cast is quite memorable, both in terms of the main characters but also the cameos.
Now, Rian Johnson does it again with "Glass Onion," a movie that is bigger and better in virtually every way. As our own review called it, "'Glass Onion' is loaded with huge belly-laugh moments and the types of ultra-clever jokes that will make you want to cheer." Indeed, the film is bolder, it has something to say about class warfare,...

Actor Noah Segan follows up “M.I.S.T..E.R.” his segment from last year’s Scare Package with his first feature, Blood Relatives, a comedy that proves blood, and the thirst for it, is thicker than water.
Francis (Noah Segan) is a vampire. He keeps to himself and travels the backroads trying to avoid attention. He’s been doing a fairly good job of it too until the clerk at a motel makes a comment about a girl who can’t be more than sixteen in his room. He’s confused, but as it turns out she’s right. As a vampire without American identification, you could say Francis (Noah Segan) is an illegal immigrant regardless of the fact he’s lived in the country longer than anyone else currently alive with a legitimate birth certificate. Why he chooses to drive through red states in his vintage Barracuda while confusing Alex Jones-loving, conspiracy-theorizing yokels with Yiddish is therefore a mystery. This is the solitary bachelor life he’s chosen, though. And perhaps that part of the country is simply better suited for a nomadic lifestyle demanding a sense of secrecy considering the trail of bodies Francis inevitably leaves in his wake (animal meat makes him bloated). There’s also no shortage of racist criminals no one will miss for him to kill. Happiness is an unnecessary luxury. Survival is paramount.

Noah Segan is very much one of those, "Hey, I know that guy" actors. For years, he has been a staple of Rian Johnson's filmography, appearing in everything from "Brick" to "Knives Out." Heck, he even had a little cameo in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." Segan has also been quite the genre mainstay, popping up in films such as "Starry Eyes" and "The Pale Door." But now, Segan has decided to step behind the camera (as well as in front of it) for his feature directorial debut, "Blood Relatives."
Segan's film, now streaming on Shudder, is a vampire comedy that co-stars Victoria Morales ("Teen Wolf"), serving as part road trip film, part coming of age movie. It centers on Francis, a 115-year-old Yiddish vampire, who still looks like his young self. He's been roaming American backroads in his beat-up muscle car for decades, trying to keep to himself.

A snappily directed debut from frequent Rian Johnson collaborator Noah Segan about a teenage girl looking for a father figure in a flighty vampire
From Let the Right One In to What We Do in the Shadows, the domesticated wing of the vampire genre is getting overcrowded. So frequent Rian Johnson collaborator Noah Segan has done well to wangle himself a few inches of elbow room in his directorial debut with a surprisingly gentle, ruminative and haunted film concerned with family and belonging. Focused on an estranged father and daughter on the road played by Segan himself and Victoria Moroles, it almost plays out like an undead Paper Moon.
Blood Relatives starts with a Near Dark-like glower, as Segan’s biker-jacketed drifter Francis makes a convenience store stop-off for carb gaskets and haemoglobin. When he checks into a motel to escape daylight, he’s collared by obstinate teenager Jane (Moroles...

Everyone has a story to tell, and Noah Segan finally found his.
The Blood Relatives writer/director/star, who’s most known for his ongoing collaboration with filmmaker Rian Johnson, has spent the majority of his life performing on sets, but he never really considered directing a feature film until recently. It was fatherhood that ultimately changed his perspective, and the pandemic, in turn, provided him the time and opportunity that led to the creation of Blood Relatives, a horror-comedy about a 115-year-old Jewish vampire (Segan) who discovers he has a teenage daughter (Victoria Moroles).
“I started a family and I discovered who I really am,” Segan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So the story sort of sprang from that, while trying to obviously think about it in terms of the movies that I like and the stories that I like, which often happen to be genre tales.

If there’s one word that could effectively capture actor Noah Segan’s feature directorial debut, Blood Relatives, it’d likely be earnestness.
The charming horror-comedy sees writer/director Segan starring as Francis, an old vampire whose nomadic lifestyle gets upended by the arrival of Jane (Victoria Moroles), the teen daughter he never knew he had. Francis and Jane embark on a bloodsucking road trip that’ll test their new family bonds.
Blood Relatives is a personal story for Segan. Ahead of its release on Shudder, just in time for Thanksgiving on November 22, 2022, Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmaker about the horror-comedy’s charming sincerity, Jewish vampires, and the touching origin story behind Francis’s ultra-cool 1969 Barracuda Fastback.
It becomes apparent from the outset that Francis’s identity is intertwined with not just his vampirism but his Jewish heritage. When horror often explores Judaism through demonic possession, Blood Relatives offers a refreshing departure.

Becoming a parent changes absolutely everything, especially when unplanned. Blood Relatives sees a nomad’s life gets upended by the arrival of a daughter he never knew he had, causing a seismic shift in his isolated bachelor lifestyle. The twist here is that the central character is a bloodsucking vampire whose inner mensch gets brought to the surface by his new teen daughter. Writer/Director Noah Segan’s feature debut brings a charming soft touch to the vampire tale, favoring dad jokes and affecting bonds over savage bloodletting.

Time travel movies are amongst the most well-trodden in the sci-fi genre. Why is that, exactly? What makes them so appealing? It's tough to pin down but they can be just about anything, from the all-timer, family-friendly blockbuster "Back to the Future" to James Cameron's R-rated "The Terminator," and even the wildly creative low-budget "Primer." One of the best additions to the genre from recent memory came in 2012 courtesy of filmmaker Rian Johnson in the form of "Looper," which sees Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis playing younger and older versions of the same contract killer.
The hook is that crime syndicates use illegal time travel in the future to kill people, with Loopers being the ones to do the deed. But they have an expiration date and will be killed several decades after retirement, and that retirement comes the day they kill the future version of themselves. A tantalizing...

One of the highlights of Fantastic Fest, is Blood Relatives. This is the type of film that festivals were made for. It’s from a first-time feature director and bends the rules of genre in order to create something unique and all its own. Writer/Director Noah Segan is no stranger to film, having starred in a number of movies (including Brick and Knives Out) and having directed the "M.I.S.T.,E.R." segment of Scare Package, but this year, he comes to the fest with his own feature film. Blood Relatives is a really charming relationship/road trip movie. With vampires. Did I mention vampires? Hells yes! Vampires!
Segan stars as Francis, a lone drifter (and also vampire) who drives from place to place in his kick-ass Barracuda. He gets what he needs as he needs it, drinks blood as necessary, and just sort of…exists. One day,...

"Blood Relatives" is a movie with a lot of heart. And blood. Lots and lots of blood, because this is the story of a pair of vampires. But it's also a father-daughter bonding flick; a road trip movie; and a surprisingly non-stop delivery system for Yiddish words. Written, directed by, and starring Noah Segan, "Blood Relatives" is clearly a passion project for the actor (who you probably primarily know from his frequent collaborations with Rian Johnson), and as is often the case with passion projects for actors-turned-filmmakers, it's a little clumsy. There are scenes that feel awkwardly long, in dire need of some trimming — a mid-movie sequence shot day-for-night goes on seemingly forever and robs the movie of serious momentum, for instance.
And yet, "Blood Relatives" is so unapologetically warm — especially for a vampire flick — that it's hard not to be charmed by it all. You'll notice the clunky bits that need some fixing.

For years, Fantastic Fest, the annual genre film festival in Austin, Texas, has been one of the best kept secrets on the festival circuit. Taking place at one theater (the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar), it’s an endlessly delightful cornucopia of exploding heads, talking animals and deviant sex (sometimes all in the same movie). This year’s festival features 21 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and 21 U.S. premieres, with a mixture of mainstream fare (Paramount’s new horror movie “Smile” will have its premiere at the festival) and the endearingly esoteric.
The festival will once again take over the Alamo Drafthouse from Sept. 22-29 and on the web via a virtual Ff@Home experience from Sept. 29-Oct. 4.
Among the many delights of this year’s festival include the opening night premiere of “Smile,” the U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave,” with the closing night film being “Triangle of Sadness,...
