Chris Pine shares his thoughts after a casting director for The O.C. said he lost out on a role due to his acne.
In 2023’s Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History, casting director Patrick Rush talked about Pine reading for Ryan Atwood, which eventually went to Ben McKenzie.
“I hate saying this, but it’s the truth: Chris Pine was at the age where he was experiencing really bad skin problems. And it was at that point where it looked insurmountable,” Rush said in the book via the Av Club. “And as a kid who grew up with horrible skin, it just broke my heart.”
Pine appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he was asked about Rush’s comments and said, “It’s a part of my life. The man didn’t have to talk about it. I mean, it’s his prerogative.”

Chris Pine is opening up about not landing the role of Ryan Atwood in The O.C. due to his bad acne at the time.
In Welcome to The O.C.: An Oral History, which was released in honor of the show’s 20th anniversary, casting director Patrick Rush revealed that the Star Trek star did not get the lead part in the Fox show because of his skin problems.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast ahead of the release of Pine’s directorial debut, Poolman, host Josh Horowitz asked him if bringing up how he lost the role due to his acne was Ptsd or a sour point for him.
“No — I mean, it’s a part of my life. Look, do I wish…? The man didn’t have to talk about it. I mean, it’s his prerogative,” the Wonder Woman star said. “I...

Way before his glamorous starring role as Admiral James T. Kirk in Star Trek, Chris Pine missed a role because of his looks.
In the early 2000s, he was in the running for the role of Ryan Atwood on the teen drama The O.C. But casting director Patrick Rush passed because of a common teenage problem.
Rush was interviewed for Alin Sepinwall’s new book Welcome To The O.C.: The Oral History.

Ben McKenzie won the role, but Pine soldiered on. He appeared on shows like ER and CSI: Miami,...

Cut, Color, Murder is a new Signature Mystery coming to Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on Sunday, February 6.
The movie features Julie Gonzalo and Ryan McPartlin as a salon operator named Ali and the new detective in town, Kyle, who work together to solve the murder of a pageant director.
As the story unfolds, Ali's reminded of her husband's murder years previous, which makes her more eager to solve the current case and clear the names of her friends and family.
We had the opportunity to talk with Ryan, who's at the heart of this production as creator, executive producer, and star.
When we caught up with Ryan, he was getting in touch with his inner child by visiting Wisconsin, where he spent summers with his parents growing up.
He was laughing at people ice fishing in the cold weather, thrilled to see his parents again, and in touch with his friend,...

John Green is known for writing complex and sad stories about teenagers, and Looking For Alaska is no different. After years of waiting, the 2005 novel is finally being adapted for the small screen with Hulu's new miniseries, which premiered on Oct. 18. Though the show includes quite a few nods to the book, it also expands more on minor characters, including Chip's girlfriend Sara, played by Landry Bender.
We recently had a chance to talk with the 19-year-old actress and she dished on everything from her "crazy" audition process (She actually auditioned for two other characters originally!) to how the series shows a whole new side to her once "one-dimensional" character.

That Chris Pratt is the star of one of the biggest movies of the year (two, really, even if people didn't specifically see "The Lego Movie" for him) is perhaps surprising to filmgoers who didn't know him at all (or only knew him from supporting roles in films like "Moneyball" or "Zero Dark Thirty"). But it's almost certainly not surprising to TV fans who watched him grow up from the unexpected heart of "Everwood" as sensitive jock Bright Abbott, to a scene stealer on "The O.C." as rich kid revolutionary Che, through his current role as man-child musician Andy Dwyer on "Parks and Recreation" — three roles that, together, showed off the range, charisma and impeccable comic timing that he brought to the role of Star-Lord. And it is absolutely not a shock to the people he worked for on those shows. As "Guardians of the Galaxy" prepared for its second...

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.

After three episodes with Kathy trying to learn from Hollywood's mature "A-Listers", she decides to take on "Young Hollywood" ... with mixed results.
Journey below to find out why this episode of My Life on the D-List earns an up arrow, despite the presence of "Young Hollywood"'s Queen Vapid Debutante.
The episode starts off great, with Kathy trying to worm her way into Hollywood's elite youth, and what better way than try to get an appearance on a hot, hip CW show? She wants Gossip Girl, but has to settle for Privileged.
She meets up with hot lead actor Ignacio Serricchio, who's a good sport about playing along with Kathy's schtick, although one bizarre moment halfway through their meeting causes Kathy to be taken aback. See for yourself:
Kathy has about three lines on the show and continually flubs them (just ... perhaps ... purposely), and when she asks Team Griffin for...
