It is the spring of “Baby Reindeer.” Netflix’s addictive limited series about a struggling comedian (Richard Gadd) working at a bar who makes the biggest mistake of his life when he gives a lonely woman (Jessica Gunning) a cup of tea on the house is the most watched series currently on the streamer and viewership is growing. And the fact that it’s based on a true story, makes “Baby Reindeer” even more creep and chilling. It’s a must-see voyeur thriller.
The same was true in the fall of 1987 with Adrian Lyne’s “Fatal Attraction.” Audiences flocked to the hard R-rated thriller which starred a wild-haired Glenn Close as an editor with a publishing company who has one-night stand with a happily married attorney (Michael Douglas) whose wife and daughter are out of town. Though it’s “understood” that it’s just a fling, Close’s Alex just won’t let go.

Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” is often cited as the most expensive music video ever made. The director of the video hates this claim. He said that one Guns N’ Roses clip and another clip from the King of Pop cost way more.
Michael Jackson ‘Scream’ cost millions but it’s not the most expensive music video ever
Mark Romanek directed the music video for “Scream.” He also helmed the videos for Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” During a 2010 interview with Slashfilm, Romanek acknowledged that The Guinness Book of World Records claims “Scream” is the most expensive music video ever made due to its hefty $7 million price tag. Romanek said the book isn’t accurate.
Romanek said Guns N’ Roses made a video with oil tankers that cost $9 million or $10 million. The director couldn’t remember the name of Guns N’ Roses’ song,...

Update: A trailer for Never Let Go was shown during the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon today, and JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance. Here’s a description of what he saw: “Halle Berry and her two kids are living in a cabin after the world ends. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. The creatures (which you...

There’s an argument to be made that thought-provoking writer/director Alex Garland is the most influential sci-fi filmmaker of his generation. He wrote Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later“(2002) and “Sunshine” (2007), Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go” (2010), and “Dredd” (2012), and then he made the jump to directing with daring movies like “Ex-Machina,” “Annihilation” and the horror “Men”.

Kokomo City follows the lives of four black transgender women who work as sex workers. These women, Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell and Dominique Silver, frankly and vividly talk about their work, lives and passions. Director D. Smith, herself a transgender woman, became interested in the subject of sex work after she lost her job in the music industry after transitioning. She thought about doing sex work and that started her relationship with the four women. With a camera in tow she herself shot most of the footage, which startles with its clair-obscur black and white photography. Smith makes their lives look like something out of a Mark Romanek video or a Dave La Chapelle fashion shoot. If anything else, this is the...

David Fincher has firmly established himself as a master of blending art and commerce. It’s especially impressive considering his output has been uniformly dark, moody and disturbing, with flashes of wit and satire thrown in. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1962, Fincher cut his teeth at special effects house Industrial Light and Magic, working on such films as “Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi” (1983) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). He left to pursue a career in directing, making his mark with a commercial for the American Cancer Society that depicted a fetus smoking a cigarette. He co-founded Propaganda Films, a production house for music videos and commercials that employed future filmmakers Spike Jonze, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Alex Proyas, Mark Romanek, Zach Snyder and Gore Verbinski. Fincher himself helmed several famous music videos, including “Vogue,...

[This story contains spoilers for Reptile.]
In the two weeks since its release, Grant Singer’s Reptile has remained atop Netflix’s own film charts with 19.9 million views and counting. The Benicio Del Toro-led crime thriller is Singer’s feature directorial debut after nearly a decade of making inventive music videos for the likes of The Weeknd, Lorde and Ariana Grande. The film centers around Del Toro’s Detective Tom Nichols, as he investigates the murder of a real estate agent (Matilda Lutz) and uncovers a tangled web of corruption within his new community in Maine.
At a time when crime dramas and murder mysteries are still immensely popular, especially on Netflix, Singer, along with his co-writers Benjamin Brewer and Del Toro himself, knew that they had to work overtime to keep viewers on their toes.

The late Robin Williams had the incredible and unmatched ability to make people laugh. His volcanic energy, genius delivery, and rapid impressions made him a household name. Williams’ immense success in the 1990s eventually opened the door for more serious films, including the tender Good Will Hunting and the fantastical What Dreams May Come. Not everything that came after was as well received or recognized, but Williams continued to pursue other genres outside of comedy. The actor had his fair share of dramatic performances to complement his comedic ones, but it was Williams’ sinister turn in 2002’s One Hour Photo that caught everyone off guard. No one was expecting Mrs. Doubtfire or Aladdin’s genie to star in such an unsettling psychological-thriller.

It’s not an overstatement to say Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” is already one of the biggest albums of the 21st century. The album broke sales and streaming records, netting 1.57 million total album units in its first week based on its combined album sales, track sales, and online streams. That was actually Swift’s career-best first week despite being her 10th album. With that success, paired with the critical acclaim Swift’s been enjoying lately, it’s no wonder that the album is currently poised for some Grammy recognition, leading the odds right now on Gold Derby for Album of the Year, and being a heavy contender for other categories as well. And just like how the album broke sales records for Swift, it could break some Grammy records for her as well.

FX is no longer moving forward with its series adaptation of “Never Let Me Go,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The show was originally picked up to series by FX back in October and was meant to air exclusively on Hulu. It had originally been reported as being in development at FX in May 2022. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, production had not yet begun before the decision to scrap the series was made.
The drama series was inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 science fiction novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a film in 2010. The film was written by Alex Garland, directed by Mark Romanek, and produced by Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich.
Per the logline for the series, it followed “Thora (Viola Prettejohn), a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society.

FX has decided to ignore the advice of its own series title and let go of the TV adaptation of "Never Let Me Go" before the show could ever air or even go into production. We first reported last May that the network was developing a new adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro's novel for television, with director Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo") having previously adapted the book into a 2010 film starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield. Originally meant to stream on Hulu, the "Never Let Me Go" series received the official green light from FX last October, but now, it is no longer happening, according to Variety.
Viola Prettejohn ("The Nevers") was set to star in "Never Let Me Go" as Thora, described in the series logline as "a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society.

A series adaptation of Never Let Me Go, the Kazuo Ishiguro novel that was adapted as a film starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield, is no longer moving forward at FX, sources close to the project have confirmed to Deadline. Production had not yet begun.

The series was to star Viola Prettejohn (The Nevers) in the lead role.

“Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out” is one of those great long titles that rarely ends up connected to a great movie, long or otherwise. Published in 2005, “Never Let Me Go” is one of Ishiguro’s — a Nobel Prize-winning author also known for “The Remains of the Day” — most popular and critically acclaimed novels. Set in Britain during the ’90s, the book focuses on three childhood friends: Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth. Raised at the mysterious Hailsham boarding school, the three are clones created for the purpose of growing up healthy and donating their organs to science. Resigned to their fates, the three grow up close, but interpersonal conflicts between them lead to mistakes that haunt them for the rest of their short lives.

Viola Prettejohn, Tracey Ullman and Kelly Macdonald will star in the series adaptation of Never Let Me Go, which has been handed a series order by FX to air on Hulu.
Earlier this year, Deadline revealed that the Kazuo Ishiguro novel adapted as a film starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield was being turned into a TV series from The Nevers writer Melissa Iqbal.
The sci-fi thriller is now moving forward with Viola Prettejohn, who starred in The Nevers, in the lead role.
She plays Thora, a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society. But as she starts living undercover in the outside world, she unwittingly sets in motion events that will spark a revolution and test the boundaries of what it means to be human.

Beyoncé quietly announced the highly-anticipated tour in support of her seventh studio album Renaissance randomly during the 2022 Wearable Art Gala over the weekend. Without an explicit announcement, the live shows were confirmed to be scheduled for next summer when the charity auction began taking bids for an elaborate concert ticket package valued at 20,000. One attendee reportedly forked over between 45,000 and 50,000 for two concert tickets, plus travel accommodations and a backstage tour for the 2023 Renaissance tour.

Beyoncé stars in an irresistibly energetic new ad campaign for Tiffany & Co.
The upbeat video is set to Bey’s song “Summer Renaissance” — the last track on her seventh studio album Renaissance –– and features several dancers, including herself, wearing gorgeous gems from the luxury jewellery retailer.
The promo supports Beyonce’s recent ad campaign “Lose Yourself in Love” with Tiffany & Co., with whom she has a year-old partnership. The project follows last year’s “About Love” campaign, released in August, in which the singer starred with her hubby Jay-Z. Now, Beyonce is front and centre in the new film, inspired by ’70s club culture.
Throughout the minute-long clip, Bey shines in a variety of signature Tiffany & Co. jewels, like the 10-carat round brilliant diamond ring. The Grammy-winning artist also wears a custom 18-karat gold necklace, specifically created for the campaign, that was made three times bigger than the original graduated-link piece from Tiffany & Co.

Each element connected to this summer’s rollout of Beyoncé’s Renaissance has felt (unsurprisingly) flawless, from the irresistible energy of its dance-focused tracks to the ultra-stylish imagery that’s been released since the earliest teases of this seventh solo album. A master class in high fashion, both the still images and teaser videos connected to Renaissance have featured Beyoncé wearing custom looks from coveted labels that range from Gucci and Alaïa to Schiaparelli and Mugler, as well as Los Angeles-based artist Nusi Quero, who crafted the piece the superstar wears while poised atop a holographic horse on the album’s cover, an image meant to evoke thoughts of Lady Godiva.
But beyond those teaser videos, plus the official “Renaissance” lyric videos, there have been no full music videos yet released in support of the album. Today, fans who have been waiting to...

"Seven" wastes no time, introducing Detectives Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Mills (Brad Pitt) to each other and the audience within five minutes. If the gruesome murder scene they investigate together isn't enough to establish a grim mood, then the opening titles are.
While it takes until the third act for the killer "John Doe" to appear, the title sequence gives viewers an early peak into his twisted mind. Kyle Cooper, the designer of the title sequence, has said, "I was really into horror movies when I was a kid, and I used to get frustrated when they'd hold back the monster to the very end."
A series of extreme close-ups, sometimes overlaid on top of each other, show gruesome pictures, the killer journaling and developing photographs, and destroying his own fingertips with a razor blade. Interspersed are credits, which were scratched onto a blackboard to ensure the typography was unclean.

"Good Will Hunting" marked a turning point in Robin Williams' acting career. Besides snagging him his first and only Oscar win, it was perhaps the first time Williams had completely shed his energetic comedic persona on-screen. Indeed, there's nary a moment in director Gus Van Sant's 1997 drama where the actor bursts into some hyper-active form of pantomime. Even when his character in the film — a reticent therapist and psychology teacher — cracks a joke about sleeping with his patients or how his late wife would fart in her sleep, Williams delivers the punch-line in a fittingly dry, awkward manner.
In a way, "Good Will Hunting" was a prelude to what Williams would refer to in Dave Itzkoff's written 2018 biography "Robin" as his "triptych of evil." This was in referral to a period in the early aughts where the actor tackled three dark roles in a row, each of them...

Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian sci-fi novel Never Let Me Go is being adapted into a television series at FX, as first reported by Deadline. Previously adapted into a 2010 film starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley, the story follows Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy, former students at Hailsham, an exclusive boarding school secluded in the English countryside. This mysterious school is still on Kathy’s mind years later, and when Ruth and Tommy re-enter her life, she begins to look back at their shared past and understand what it is that makes them special. The Nevers writer Melissa Iqbal is behind the project, which comes from DNA Films, which also produced the feature film version, and Searchlight TV, which distributed the movie. Iqbal will serve as executive producer on the series alongside Allon Reich and Andrew MacDonald. Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) directed the 2010 movie from a screenplay by Alex Garland...

FX is developing a series based on the 2010 Searchlight Pictures film “Never Let Me Go,” Variety has learned. Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, who served as producers on the original film, will executive produce the series.
Adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel of the same name, “Never Let Me Go” was directed by Mark Romanek from a screenplay by Alex Garland. The cast included Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield. The film follows Kathy (Mulligan), Ruth (Knightley) and Tommy (Garfield), who meet as childhood friends at an English boarding school called Hailsham and learn that they are clones, created to serve as organ donors in a “breakthrough” medical plan to help extend the human lifespan. Together, the three navigate love, friendships and art while preparing for their inevitable deaths.

Andrew Garfield is ready to take a break. The actor has been going nonstop for the past year or so with “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” Now, he can be seen in “Under the Banner of Heaven,” FX’s limited series adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s 2003 true-crime book of the same name. Garfield plays a Mormon detective investigating the brutal murder of a mother (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter by fundamentalist followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “I’m going to rest for a little bit,” Garfield, who earned his second Oscar nom for “Tick, Tick,” tells me. “I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for awhile. Because as you know, that is a washing machine,...

The original director, Mark Romanek, jumped ship to be replaced by Joe Johnston. The result is a wolf’s dinner.

For someone who has been as prolific making music videos over the decades as Mark Romanek has, it’s absolutely shocking that the filmmaker doesn’t have more features under his belt. But honestly, when you look at his filmography, long gaps are pretty common, as it was 17 years between “Static” and “One-Hour Photo” and 8 more years between “One-Hour Photo” and “Never Let Me Go.” But with that latter feature arriving 11 years ago, it’s about time for a new Romanek film, right?

It’s been over a decade since the last Mark Romanek-directed feature, the Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation Never Let Me Go. Since its 2010 release, he’s become attached to rom-coms, thrillers, and even a Dan Brown adaptation––however none have come to fruition. Now another project is on his plate and one that will hopefully see the light of day.
Deadline reports he’s attached to direct the horror film Mother Land at Lionsgate. Scripted by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the story follows a family that has been haunted by an evil spirit for years. David Fincher has firmly established himself as a master of blending art and commerce. It’s especially impressive considering his output has been uniformly dark, moody and disturbing, with flashes of wit and satire thrown in. The Netflix film “Mank” has brought him back to the Oscars in the Best Director category. Let’s take a look back at all 11 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1962, Fincher cut his teeth at special effects house Industrial Light and Magic, working on such films as “Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi” (1983) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). Cracking the surreal visual code of the Simon Stålenhag paintings that inspired “Tales from the Loop” was hard enough for veteran cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth. Their strange aura of a picnic tableau with discarded robots in barren landscapes had to somehow connect with showrunner Nathaniel Halpern’s sci-fi series about restoring humanity in a community deprived of love and intimacy. But the Emmy-nominated Cronenweth made a breakthrough while on location in Winnipeg by shooting exterior night scenes… in subzero temperatures… during Magic Hour.
“It was a problem that we were dealt from the very beginning because of the way the script’s written and the way time passes and having so little time at night to shoot with minors,” Cronenweth said. “But I was amazed at the amount of time we had at dusk once the sun shadows had become soft enough or dropped below the horizon line.”
