Netflix claims that over 45 million people saw “Bird Box” in its first week on the streaming platform, but not one of them actually “saw” the monsters that terrorized Sandra Bullock in the film.
Well on Saturday, special effects artist Andy Bergholtz shared some photos on Instagram of what those monsters were supposed to look like, saying that a nightmare sequence in which they appeared to Bullock’s character was ultimately cut from the film.
Some spoilers for “Bird Box” follow:

Bergholtz shared several photos of a veiny, cragged, baby face, which he said was meant to play into Bullock’s fears as an expectant mother at the start of the film.

Welcome to one of the most unique categories at the Oscars. Best Makeup & Hairstyling is the only category to still feature the "bake-off” phase, where three nominees are chosen from seven finalists after those finalists each make a pitch-via-reel to the branch. Every year features surprise omissions and inclusions, both among the final seven and the final three. The category seems almost uniquely immune to being overwhelmed by the overall reputation of a film. (Best Costume Design is its only rival in this respect.) Films of questionable quality are nominated nearly every year. While some lament the titles that have earned the moniker "Oscar nominee” ("Norbit” perhaps being the most infamous example), I for one love the fact that this branch actually strives to do what it is tasked with. While these macro-level characteristics of the category permeate the nominations process, trends among the nominees are nevertheless observable. The category tends to award monster makeup,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award
• How the night unfolded
• Full list of winners
12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

There are Oscar-caliber films, and then there’s the Jackass series. Johnny Knoxville’s irreverent, prank-filled romps just fill a different niche — one that, under normal circumstances, probably wouldn’t even register with those looking to honor prestige filmmaking. It is probably safe to say that no one ever expected a Jackass property to get an Oscar nomination.
But Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa was different, and the Academy took notice. Here was a film that lived and died by its ability to trick people in real life into thinking that a 40-something Knoxville was actually a crude 86-year-old man. The conceit worked,...

So will the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling go to Stephen Prouty for his impressive transformation of Johnny Knoxville's hysterical and horny 86-year-old Irving Zisman in "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa"? It's certainly a triumph of old school craft, which required a complete re-imagining to believably pull it off and provide Knoxville with better flexibility for his comedic turn. Prouty and his makeup team went on the road like Irving and grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) in the movie. Unlike the previous "Jackass" movies, though, they streamlined the original sculpture so Knoxville could be more expressive. The demands of the movie also required an upgrade from foam latex to silicone and the makeup team went out of its way to streamline the pieces so they were softer and thinner and had more natural movement. For a 10-piece silicone prosthetic make-up job (including faux genitals) with hairpieces, the makeup team had it down to under.

2013 was an unusually rich year for movies. I felt strongly about both my top ten choices of the year and the runners-up, and I still left off a ton of movies that I enjoyed completely and that I'd recommend to audiences. One of the things that is hardest for me to get my head around when contemplating the Oscars is the idea of picking one thing to represent the year in each of these categories. Still, if I were told today that I had an Oscar ballot and I was asked to vote, the only way I could do it would be operating from pure gut feeling. I wouldn't worry about trying to predict anyone else's response. This was an annual exercise for Siskel and Ebert for years, and they always seemed to use the opportunity to champion what they felt were the underdogs of the nominations. We'll run down every category here.

Join us as we discuss our predictions for this year’s Oscars. Check out who our contributors think will win and add your own picks!
Predicting Oscars is not easy. There are no formulas or tricks to help us, and our own opinions about which films are most worthy are based on, let’s face it, a limited personal experience.
Some people claim that the winners are determined by their popularity; those nominees that are trending at the time the winners are selected are going to fare the best. Others claim that it is about previous work and effort. Those that have done the time and paid their dues will eventually be rewarded. Another perspective is that the Oscar winners are chosen in a way to help guide the future of film. Those with talent and potential are rewarded as an effort to bolster their careers and steer the industry in a particular direction.

There have been snickers and arched eyebrows over the Oscar nomination handed to Jackass’s “Bad Grandpa” for best makeup and hairstyling, but few films faced — and bested — the challenges that were presented to lead artist Stephen Prouty and his team of merry prankster-enablers. Like, for example, crafting very realistic swinging old guy testicles and a rubberized penis for star Johnny Knoxville to wear as he galavanted around as an 86-year-old misanthrope. “Those were both made of silicone,” Prouty explained to TheWrap. “The penis that gets stuck in a vending machine was silicone that had reinforcements built into it so we.

Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! This is the second year of the Best Makeup and Hairstyling moniker, as the category was formerly named just "Best Makeup." Our first winner under that banner was "Les Misérables," a showcase of both prosthetic work and hair design, but the transformative stuff will always be the stand-out for the Academy. Our nominees this year are an assorted bunch to say the least, prestige mingling with blockbuster and comedy entertainment. As ever, the branch went its own way, focused on the work more than a film's place in the Best Picture race, which can't be said for quite a few other craft...

Although it may not be the first film one thinks of when it comes to Oscar season, it's hard to deny the incredible makeup work on display in Paramount Pictures' Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa . That's due in no small part to the incredible work done by lead makeup artist Stephen Prouty who is in the running to take home the big prize when he winners are announced March 2. ComingSoon.net paid a visit to "Jackass" headquarters to sit down with both Prouty himself and his grand creation, the 86-year-old Irving Zirsman (played by Johnny Knoxville after a 3 1/2-hour makeup session). Check out the full video in the player below, which includes an introduction by Knoxville and a rapid time lapse montage of the Zisman makeup being applied. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa...

I was beginning to wonder if Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa may actually have a chance at the Oscar for Best Makeup & Hairstyling after it won for Best Special Makeup Effects with the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, but can we really expect the Academy to stand up there on Oscar night and have someone read off, "And the Oscar goes to... Stephen Prouty and Tony Gardner for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa"c Nah, it's just another one of those "it's great to be nominated" things and a new story from Vanity Fair lets us in on why Robin Mathews' work on Dallas Buyers Club is so impressive: Robin Mathews's budget for the makeup on Dallas Buyers Club was $250. That's $250 not just to transform Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto from near-death AIDS patients to relatively healthy-looking human beings, sometimes five times in a single day. Stephen Prouty says the makeup work on "Bad Grandpa" was more demanding than most of the films he has worked on as it is a hidden camera movie. The hit comedy follows the cross-country trip of an 86-year-old grandfather (comedian Johnny Knoxville, aged more than four decades) and his grandson. The people they encounter are innocents who just happen to be in the wrong place at the right time when all sorts of pranks occur. During our video chat below, Prouty readily admits: "The first day of shooting was the most nervous because we hadn't tested that final makeup. We were on a golf course out in Ohio, and it was an early morning call. People were buying that this was a real old man, so there was definitely a sense of relief and elation that we pulled this off." For his efforts, the three-time Emmy nominee ("Castle," "Angel," and...

Before this week, most people probably wouldn't have used the phrase "Oscar hopeful" to describe Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. But on Thursday, Paramount's prank-filled movie -- starring Johnny Knoxville as 86-year-old Jackass character Irving Zisman going on a wild cross-country road trip with his grandson -- was nominated for an Academy Award for best makeup and hairstyling. Oscar time is upon us again, as this year.s nominations were announced this morning, prompting joy and disgust from moviegoers with almost every category. And while the first instinct will almost always be to complain about what didn.t make it . or to complain about Hollywood and awards season in general . let.s take a few minutes to shower further praise on those performers who are receiving their first nominations, and look at the long or short roads they traveled to achieve their successes. We are admittedly playing favorites today, spotlighting actors and actresses (and a director) over those who arguably put just as much of an effort into the films. creations. Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winters. first nom for adapting The Wolf of Wall Street is worth a mention, as is Phillippe Le Sourd.s nom for Wong Kar Wai.s The Grandmaster. Britain’s world-leading studios and VFX facilities take centre stage in the spectacular Gravity, and the ability of our visionary directors to bring true stories to life with extraordinary effect is seen so vividly in Stephen Frears’ BFI and BBC Films-supported Philomena and Steve McQueen’s Film4-backed 12 Years A Slave.
