As part of this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association weekend, Deadline gathered the creator and cast of Netflix’s The Diplomat for an event hosted by the Irish ambassador to the United States, Geraldine Byrne Nason.
Stars Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, creator Debora Cahn and Nason sat down for a panel with Deadline’s Ted Johnson, before guests who included Samantha Power, Anthony Fauci and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn).
When asked about the real-life similarities of her life to the show, the Irish Ambassador quipped, “Some things I haven’t seen were the kind of skinny dipping.”
“Don’t limit yourself. It may still come to pass,” Russell responded.
There are many other similarities, Nason said.
“There is very little that we would ever say is fair in love or war, or politics or diplomacy,” she said. “But I think what we as diplomats, our trade, is to...

The chants and shouts of pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the entry to the Washington Hilton for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, but once inside, attendees were greeted with what has become the usual scene: Celebrities on the red carpet, a crush for the security line and glitterati packed into a cavernous ballroom.
“I want to thank my wife for enduring lots of jokes and for agreeing to individually meet everyone in this room right after the ceremony,” the evening’s featured entertainer, Colin Jost, quipped about Scarlett Johansson, who posed for photos with a non-stop stream of attendees. She continued to do so later in the evening, at the Comcast-nbcu after party at the French ambassador’s residence.

This article and video contains spoilers about the first season of “The Diplomat.”
After six seasons on and three Emmy nominations for “The Americans,” Keri Russell returns to the world of international affairs on television in an entirely new way in the Netflix series “The Diplomat.” While both shows boast “sweeping political themes,” the actress stresses, “What attracted me to them is a much more intimate aspect of the people and usually the relationship.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Russell stars in the title role of “The Diplomat” as Kate Wyler, an American field officer in the foreign service previously based in Afghanistan who gets unexpectedly sent to London as the American ambassador after a British carrier is attacked, since the motives behind the attack seem to be to draw the U.S.’s attention. “We didn’t learn the lessons that were so brightly clear 75 years ago,” proclaims Dror Moreh, the director behind the documentary “The Corridors of Power.” The film is a brutal and frank look at the role that politics has played in America’s response–or lack of a response– to the numerous instances of genocide that have occurred since the end of the Cold War.
For Moreh, who earned an Oscar nomination for his 2012 documentary feature “The Gatekeepers,” the film is a call for citizens to push their political leaders towards intervention, rather than being merely bystanders to atrocities. Watch more of our exclusive video interview above.

In The Corridors of Power, filmmaker Dror Moreh takes a bracing look at the factors that kept America — the sole remaining superpower in the immediate post-Cold War era — from intervening in global instances involving genocide, war crimes and other large-scale atrocities.
“The idea of the movie started, basically, when I saw the horrible picture that came out from Syria, especially after the chemical attack [in 2013], especially after the Syrian regime has crossed Obama’s red line,” Moreh revealed during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Documentary awards-season panel, noting that President Barack Obama had indicated that the U.S. would commit to opposing the Assad regime. “So I asked myself: What goes on in those decision-making rooms when they decide to intervene in one place, but not the other, or they don’t decide?”

"Do you want justice? Or peace? You can't have both." A very provocative statement, but it's true. Showtime has debuted an official trailer for a new documentary film from acclaimed director Dror Moreh titled The Corridors of Power, which first premiered at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival a few months ago. It's also playing at the Doc NYC Film Festival happening right now in NYC, before opening in limited theaters later this month. The doc film is a riveting and thought-provoking examination of how American leaders have responded to reports of genocide, war crimes and mass atrocities after the fall of the Soviet Union, when America stood as the only global superpower. I'm glad it takes a hard-hitting stance: "With affecting archival footage and extensive interviews, the film centers around former Un Ambassador Samantha Power's haunting question: Why do American leaders who vow 'never again' repeatedly fail to stop genocide?...

An exceptional and, one might venture, unprecedented group of politicians, diplomats, policy wonks, elected officials and veteran Washington insiders expound on the effectiveness of international military intervention—and the lack thereof—in The Corridors of Power. Israeli director Dror Moreh made one of the great political documentaries of recent times in The Gatekeepers (2012), as well as the excellent The Human Factor (2019), and this time he has assembled an all-star cast of more than 30 political heavyweights including Henry Kissinger, Hilary Clinton, George Shultz, Madeleine Albright and Condoleeza Rice, who in deep, original interviews, help to build a picture of how and why the best intentions can come unglued. The film deserves to be seen in any and all venues by audiences interested in the state of the world and clarity about how we got here.

Dror Moreh, the Oscar-nominated director of The Gatekeepers and another doc about the Middle East, The Human Factor, broadens his scope productively in his new documentary, The Corridors of Power, which had its world premiere screenings in Telluride. Doreh assembled an impressive array of diplomats from several administrations over the past 40 years, and he comes up with a deeply disturbing examination of genocide during recent decades.
The film opens by recalling the Nazi genocide of the Jews, with a reminder of how little the United States did to try and halt the slaughter. After the war ended and the United Nations was formed, the cry of “Never again!” echoed throughout the world. Given the dark side of human nature, that was always an optimistic credo, but people probably did not realize how many horrific instances of genocide would emerge in the decades that followed,...

"Sergio" stars Brazilian ace Wagner Moura -- that's Pablo Escobar in "Narcos" for you -- with Cuban origin actress Ana de Armas. You've seen her knock on the doors of global stardom with "Knives Out" so far, and she is the next Bond girl in "No Time To Die". The mainstream marquee introduction would be enough for most to check out this biopic.
Those who dig deeper into international cinema, though, would perhaps want to check out the name of the director. Greg Barker's resume as a chronicler of contemporary human history includes brilliant documentary efforts as "Koran By Heart" and "The Longest War". That in itself gives this project added heft.
With "Sergio", Barker moves into feature film terrain. The film is a bio-pic of Brazilian United Nations diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, a titan of world socio-politics whose efforts at international harmony and security left a global impact.

Gist: Inspired by Samantha Power's Pulitzer Prize winning book "A Problem From Hell", this interweaves the stories of four exceptional humanitarians whose lives and work are linked together by the ongoing crisis in Darfur. Through the stories of these contemporary characters, the film uncovers the forgotten history of the Genocide Convention and its founder Raphael Lemkin, the legendary international lawyer who dedicated his life to the prevention of genocide.

Why the country's officials say they're taking a wait-and-see approach to the new administration
A few days after Barack Obama's inauguration, I called a Rwandan diplomat who had helped me with my story on that country’s remarkable economic-development strategy. "Did you go to the balls?" I asked. The response was tepid. "I stayed home," the diplomat said with a sigh. "I watched it on TV." What I found, in talking to this diplomat and other officials, was broad ambivalence, not about President Obama himself, who is widely adored in Africa, but about his team. It goes back to 1994 and the Clinton Administration's inaction during the genocide. "We are seeing a lot of old faces coming back in the Obama Administration. These are the same people who shied away from the opportunity to stop it," the diplomat told me on condition of anonymity, because of the sensitivity of the issue.
