As The Gifted lands in the UK, we go looking for other families with superpowers to be reckoned with...
As The Gifted brings the super-powered Strucker siblings to the screen alongside their (currently) unpowered parents, we got thinking: what other super-powered families are out there? Here’s what we came up with…
Power Pack
Created in the early 80s by Louise Simonson and June Brigman, the Power Pack were four super-powered siblings (with the surname Power, natch) who used to sneak out to operate as a team while keeping their identities secret from their parents. It was sort of like the Famous Five, but in the Marvel Universe. Throughout their run the swapped powers and codenames, but the siblings were Alex, Julie, Jack and Katie, and the powers were energy manipulation, mass manipulation, gravity manipulation and light manipulation.

Doctor Who saw its overnight audience drop on Saturday night, early viewing figures indicate. Steven Moffat story 'Day of the Moon', an explosive episode guest-starring Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill, grabbed 5.39m (30.5%) from 6pm, down 1.1m on last week's series premiere. The sci-fi drama was neither aided by its early timeslot, nor by the BBC One schedule surrounding it: just 1.39m (10.5%) watched Don't Scare The Hare at 5.30pm, while So You Think You Can Dance had 3.06m (16.7%) from 6.45pm, just pipped by Sing If You Can's 3.14m (17%) for ITV1. Departures for Stephanie Powell and Gian Luca Loddo from the talent show logged 3.15m (13.9%) at 8.50pm, after which a Casualty instalment titled 'Momentum' took 4.64m (20.5%), beating Piers Morgan's Life Stories on ITV1, which interested 3.51m (15.5%) (more)...

Stephanie Powell and Gian Luca Loddo have become the latest two contestant to be eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance.
The pair narrowly avoided being sent home last week, after they ended up in the bottom two and competed in the dance off against Ryan Jenkins and Paige Smith, who were later voted off.
This week, their competition was Rithy Pereira and Shane Collard and after all four performances, Nigel Lythgoe admitted that while the panle had chosen between the two males dancers easily, in the end they couldn’t agree and allowed production to choose between Rithy and Stephanie.
He added:
“Obviously, Stephanie, you didn’t connect with the audience last week or this week or with your new partner. I’m sorry to say, it’s you leaving us tonight.”

Stephanie Powell and Gian Luca Loddo have become the next two contestants to leave So You Think You Can Dance. The young hopefuls, who were paired up after surviving last week's dance-off, failed to win viewer votes with their kinetic cha cha and ended up in the bottom two alongside the partnership of Rithy Pereira and Shane Collard. After splitting up for a four-way solo showdown, head judge Nigel Lythgoe stepped forward to reveal which man and woman the panel had decided to send home. Explaining that himself, Arlene Phillips, Louise Redknapp and Sisco Gomez had let production pick the female eliminee after failing to agree on a decision, he stated: "Obviously, Stephanie, you didn't connect with the audience last week or this week with your new partner... it's you leaving us tonight." Lythgoe then revealed that the panel had turned in (more)...

Ryan Jenkins and Paige Smith have become the first two contestants to be eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance?. The pair failed to collect viewer votes after performing with their respective partners Stephanie Powell and Gian Luca Loddo earlier tonight, and were forced into a four-way solo showdown in front of the judging panel. After their routines, head judge Nigel Lythgoe first told Jenkins that he disagreed with co-judge Sisco Gomez's earlier assessment that his couples performance "lacked substance", but added: "A good dancer will make a routine great... Last night’s episode of No Ordinary Family did not live up to the hype of its futuristic promo.
After running into the future three times, Stephanie Powell (Julie Benz) warns her family about the terrible path that she saw the family nearing. What initially is less than 2 days to change the fate ahead turns into just a few hours until one of the Powells exposes the family on live television. It all comes down to what takes place at City Square one evening and what Stephanie sees ahead is not good.
Once Detective Frank Cordero (Guillermo Diaz) is murdered by a drive by shooter, George (Romany Malco) and Jim (Michael Chiklis) aid in finding the man responsible for the murder not realizing that the next day’s memorial service at City Square could be the end of their lives as they know it. The murder case involves dirty cops.

So You Think You Can Dance bursts back onto our screens for a second series tonight on BBC One. Cat Deeley is rejoined by Nigel Lythgoe, Arlene Phillips, Louise Redknapp and the flamboyantly-haired Sisco Gomez. This is one of my absolute favourite dance shows on television right now, so I’m going to liveblog the first episode – leave me your comments about who was hot and who…wasn’t…
Let’s get started:
Matt Flint
First up is 29 year old tapdancer Matt Flint. Matt’s from Scarborough and he delivers a quirky, fun and acrobatic tap routine for his audition. Nigel describes what Matt does as his favourite style of tap, while Arlene raves about the “feast” of Matt that he delivered.
The judges continue to rave about Matt’s fantastic footwork, and award him a golden ticket to their choreography boot camp. At this point, the show feels like American Idol for dance.

What a weird episode. "No Ordinary Animal" was full of action and a good deal of suspense, but it was peppered with so many irksome moments, it was almost hard to enjoy.
Almost.
I'll start off first with a gripe that really could be directed at the majority of shows on any network these days. Why they feel it necessary to set up a cliffhanger and then make the reveal in the preview which immediately follows I will never know. It's beyond irksome; it's flat out annoying and I wish they'd just stop it.
Although, since the next episode is airing on Saturday, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea in this instance. It's not like many folks will tune in on the weekend to find out what happens.
Is it just me, or are the Powells getting mighty reckless with their secret? Fortunately, though, they appear to live in...

There hasn't been any word from ABC on the fate of its ordinary family turned superhero series but it now looks like the series could be facing the chopping block as its leading actors sign up for other projects. Julie Benz, who plays super-speed mom Stephanie Powell on the show, has recently signed up for a supernatural-based medical drama that is being developed for CBS. The series is said to revolve around a surgeon (played by Patrick Wilson) who follows the advice of his dead wife (Jennifer Ehle). Although appearing in a pilot doesn't exactly confirm "No Ordinary Family" is out for the count, it would be impossible for Benz to simultaneously star in both shows should the pilot go to series. Her co-star, Michael Chiklis, has also signed on for a role in a new CBS comedy pilot, creating ...

According to star Stephen Collins, ABC's "No Ordinary Family" is in the midst of shooting its first-season finale, set to air on Tuesday, April 5.
Collins says the show's 20-episode run (a bit shorter than the more normal 22) ends with a bang.
"We, all of us, on this show," he tells Zap2it, "feel like it's hit its stride, which, of course, makes all the ongoing questions of whether we're going to get picked up or not that much more hair-raising. If the show was going nowhere, it'd be like, 'Ah, fine, let it go, who cares if it gets picked up?' But I feel like we're firing on all cylinders.
"I don't know how they did this, but the finale is such a deft piece of writing. It answers so many questions and creates so many situations ... I'm not kidding when I say this, if this show goes on,...

The second week of No Ordinary Family served to show us how an ordinary episode of this so-called “family drama” will work: By using each of its mysteriously super-powered characters to explore aspects of a single theme suggested by its premise. Last night: Cheating! Is it ever permissible to break the rules, even for the sake of your loved ones or for the common good, and even when you possess abilities that make you special and set you apart from the typical self-centered, self-entitled schmo? Let’s take a character-by-character look at how the episode tackled the question:

An ordinary family of four travels to the Brazilian rainforest in a desperate bid to reconnect, but all they get out of the trip is a plane crash and extraordinary super powers. "No Ordinary Family" premiered on ABC Tuesday (Sept.) as the lead-in to "Dancing With the Stars" results show. What did you think of the superhero family show?
The cheesy family-can't-connect storyline feels a little forced and contrived, but perhaps the family dynamic will become more nuanced as the series goes on. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't the strongest part of the premiere.
However, Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz as Jim and Stephanie Powell discovering their new super powers was delightful to watch. They have very entertaining relationships with their respective best friends George (Romany Malco) and Katie (Autumn Reeser), who are helping them figure out what they can now do.
We also liked the cliffhanger -- there are evil people with super powers too and apparently Stephanie's boss Dr. Dayton King (Stephen Collins) knows all about it. We're intrigued to see where that goes.

ABC‘s No Ordinary Family takes gimmick television to a whole new level, but does so in the smartest possible way. For months the show has been referred to as a live-action, television version of The Incredibles, and that’s pretty accurate. Sure, it’s the mom with the superspeed, and the son and daughter are superbrained and telepathic respectively, but the underlying theory is rather similar.
Most of the fun of The Incredibles came from the “normal” family problems they had to deal with, and No Ordinary Family builds on that model. The pilot enters us into the story as the family first gets their powers. When their plane goes down during a tour on their jungle vacation, the mysterious green water is the last thing on their minds. But, when strange things start happening back home, it’s the only link they can come up with.

Chicago – ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” features two of the better TV actors of the last decade in the great Michael Chiklis (“The Shield”) and Julie Benz (“Angel,” “Dexter”) and their remarkable charm carries a show that could be must-see viewing if it doesn’t fall into the same traps as similar high-concept shows like “Heroes” and “FlashForward.”
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
What’s so often forgotten in high-concept “Lost”-inspired shows is that audiences are always going to care about characters first. We loved “Lost” because we loved Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Locke and we lost interest in “Heroes” when it lost interest in its own increasingly-ridiculous characters. With that in mind, “No Ordinary Family” holds promise because the premiere wisely focuses on the people more than their unique situation. If that focus can remain on the believable humanity of their characters instead of their superhuman powers than “No Ordinary Family...

"No Ordinary Family" is the new superhero family show from ABC starring Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") and Julie Benz ("Dexter") as Jim and Stephanie Powell, whose plane crashes in the Amazon along with their two children Daphne and Jj (Kay Panabaker and Jimmy Bennett).
Following the crash, with the help of their friends George (Romany Malco, "Weeds") and Katie (Autumn Reeser, "Entourage"), the Powells discover their "Incredibles"-esque superpowers. Chiklis' Jim Powell hopes it will bring the family closer together, while helping him do some good in the world.
Zap2it's own Rick Porter enjoys the superhero origin story of the pilot and says the family that's unraveling half needs work, but there's hope for a cohesive show. Watch the sneak peek clips below and tell us what you think.

"No Ordinary Family" tries to be a couple different things in its premiere episode: a show about a family that's come undone and a superhero origin story. One works better than the other, but there's potential for a pretty strong, all-ages-welcome series in there.
The ABC show, which premieres at 8 p.m. Et Tuesday (Sept. 28), has a seriously fun vibe as the family -- and particularly parents Jim (Michael Chiklis) and Stephanie Powell (Julie Benz) -- figures out their new powers. The family-drama portion of the show feels a little (occasionally a lot) less fully formed than that, but as a way into the hero stuff, it's at least a slightly different approach than other TV series (we're looking at you, "Heroes") have taken.
Jim, a police sketch artist, is worried that his family is drifting apart, so he insists that he and his teenage kids (Kay Panabaker and Jimmy...

No Ordinary Family, ABC at 8 p.m.This looks like a fun new series where after the Powells, a typical American family, experience a plane crash while on vacation, the four family members end up with various super powers. Cast includes Michael Chiklis as Jim Powell – a police artist who is super-strong, nearly invulnerable, and can leap tall buildings; Julie Benz as Stephanie Powell – a scientist with super speed; Kay Panabaker as Daphne Powell – a teenage girl with telepathy; and Jimmy Bennett as Jj Powell – a teenage boy with vast intelligence.Check out the...

It is often bemoaned that “family shows,” i.e. shows the whole family can watch together, just don’t exist on today’s prime-time television slate. Parents generally tend toward heavier dramas and “smart” comedies, while their children tune into genre shows and anything involving vampires (to those about to flame me in the Comments, please note the use of the word “generally”). This concern is usually wildly overblown because since the creation of cable television and the explosion of channels and viewing options decades ago, parents and their kids have been enjoying their own shows almost exclusively. I’m 32 and I honestly can’t remember any show that was “appointment television” for my whole family when I was a kid (ER maybe? The Cosby Show??). What if, however, a network created an honest-to-goodness “family show,” a show that parents and children of all ages would likely watch independently? Would families watch together?...

If you're a TV critic or one of the lucky 50,000 fans who got a sneak peek of ABC's upcoming superhero-family drama "No Ordinary Family" online, series regular Stephen Collins encourages you to tune in again when the show makes its official TV debut on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
"I'm trying to tell people to watch the show when it airs," Collins says, "because seldom has a pilot been so pre-screened, but there are added scenes that no one has seen yet and won't see until in the pilot until it airs.
"Please watch it again, and watch it through to the very end."
Collins -- who's also doing an episode of ABC's "Brothers & Sisters," scheduled for Oct. 17 -- plays Dr. Dayton King, the boss and mentor of Stephanie Powell (Julie Benz), the mother of a family that experienced a plane crash into water deep in the Amazon and returned with super-abilities.

No ordinary guest star has been cast on No Ordinary Family.
Multiple Golden Globe Award winner and Emmy nominee Cybill Shepherd will come aboard this new ABC series in the role of Barbara Crane, the mother of Julie Benz's Stephanie Powell. She'll be joined by Bruce McGill as her character's husband.
According to Benz, Stephanie's mom won't be aware of the new powers that have been mysteriously bestowed on her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.
"We have to decide if it's best to clue them in or keep them in the dark," the actress told TV Guide of the decision her character faces.
Last week, we reported that Twilight star Jackson Rathbone was also set to join the cast in a recurring role. The show premieres on September 28.

One of the shows that I was most looking forward to seeing this fall after hearing about it was No Ordinary Family on ABC. If you’re a regular reader of this column this probably isn’t a surprise at all since the shows I like lean towards a geekier flavor and No Ordinary Family certainly fits the bill.
Before viewing the first episode of No Ordinary Family I understood the premise of the show since it is one very familiar to most comic book readers. A family survives a plain crash in Brazil and not long after they start to experience super-human powers. The premise at first sounds very formulaic and I for one was left wondering where they could go with this? What new ground could they cover? Is the ordinary people with extraordinary abilities story ready to be taken in again after so many were burned so...

No Ordinary Family is one of the shows I'm most looking forward to for the fall. It will be premiering on ABC on September 28 at 8:00 p.m. and is one of my favorite pilots so far. ABC has released two sneak peeks for the upcoming pilot episode.

The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim (Michael Chiklis, "The Shield," "Fantastic Four") feels disconnected from his workaholic wife, Stephanie (Julie Benz, "Dexter"), and two teenage children, Daphne (Kay Panabaker, "Summerland") and Jj (Jimmy Bennett, "Star Trek"). To encourage family bonding time, Jim decides the family will join Stephanie on her business trip to South America. When their plane crashes into the Amazon River, they barely enjoy a moment to celebrate their survival before returning to the grind of everyday life.

Julie Benz reveals how Rita returns to Dexter season 5 in new spoiler. Julie Benz recently interviewed with Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con with her new show "No Ordinary Family." Although it was mostly about her new show, and what's going on with that, she did reveal how her character Rita would return To "Dexter" in the upcoming season 5. First, they talked about her cool looking new show "No Ordinary Family" for a little bit. It will be premiering on ABC this fall and Julie Benz will be playing character Stephanie Powell in it. They will all have some kind of super powers and stuff. It looks really neat. Then Julie revealed that her character Rita will returning to season 5 of Showtime's hit show "Dexter" in a freakin coffin because she's dead! And they confirmed that she's really dead.

The biggest pull for ABC's "No Ordinary Family," isn't the promise of post-"Heroes" superpowers, it's a new, hopefully permanent, home for TV fan favorites Julie Benz ("Dexter") and Michael Chiklis ("The Shield").
Now an onscreen couple, they sat down with press at Comic-Con to discuss the series and how it finds them both going in completely new directions from their latest and most iconic roles.
"When pilot season started, my quest was to find a strong female character, a character who was stronger than Rita," Benz says, referring to her departed "Dexter" character, whose backbone made only a few appearances over four seasons.
Not so much now. Her new character, Stephanie Powell, is strong right out of the gate, even before she's imbued with superpowers. "Stephanie's more controlled, more of a type A personality and more goal-oriented."
And though the new powers will likely reshape her priorities and relationships as the series progresses,...

I had the pleasure of attending the Comic-Con press room Q&A with members of the cast and crew of the new ABC show No Ordinary Family. The series centers on the Powell family, headed by Jim and Stephanie (played by The Shield's Michael Chiklis and Dexter's Julie Benz), who in order to reconnect with each other and their two children (Jj, played by Jimmy Bennett, and Daphne, played by Kay Panabaker), all take a trip to South America. Their plane crashes into a lake, and when they emerge and return home, they find that they have all acquired super powers. The two lead actors and the show's producers and creators spoke to the press Saturday afternoon. There are some minor spoilers about the family's powers, so if you want to avoid them, skip the third paragraph below.

Today at Comic-Con, we got the chance to talk superpowers with Julie Benz, out to promote her brand new show, No Ordinary Family. She gives us the lowdown on just what the new show is and some tidbits on her new character, Stephanie Powell. No Ordinary Family is an upcoming drama from ABC that will follow a family that discovers they have superpowers. Benz stars opposite Michael Chiklis (The Shield) and will have the power of super speed. This looks like it can be a really fun show - it's somewhat of a mix between The Incredibles, The Fantastic Four, with a little touch of Modern Family thrown in for good measure. And yes, they have superpowers, but it's nothing like Heroes, which crashed in its second season as the plots (and time travel) got more convoluted. We also asked her to share some thoughts on Dexter's fifth season,...

Like NBC's "The Cape," ABC will also have its own superhero drama for the fall.
"No Ordinary Family" isn't about vigilanteism, but average people who become extraordinary.
Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz star as married couple Jim and Stephanie Powell, who are having trouble keeping their family unit close now that careers are interfering and their kids Daphne (Kay Panabaker) annd Jj (Jimmy Bennett) are teenagers.
A family vacation to mend their relationships takes an unexpected turn, however, when their plane crashes into the Amazon River. Once they return to civilization, they discover that each has developed superpowers.

ABC are dipping their toe into the superhero genre next season with their brand new show No Ordinary Family. The series stars Michael Chiklis (The Shield) as Jim Powell, Julie Benz (Dexter) as Stephanie Powell, Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) as George St. Cloud, Tate Donovan (Damages) as Mitch McCutcheon, Autumn Reeser as Katie Andrews, Christina Chang as Yvonne Cho, Kay Panabaker as Daphne Powell and Jimmy Bennett as Jj Powell.
The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim and Stephanie’s relationship lacks the spark it once had, and their family life now consists of balancing work and their two children, leaving little time for family bonding. During a family vacation set up by Jim in an attempt to reconnect, their plane crashes into the Amazon River. But this is where the fun starts for the Powells, as they soon discover that something’s not quite right.

ABC's Development Czar, and network president, Stephen McPherson introduced the fall line-up today with one show constantly popping up in the margins. Lost. That's right, Lost is leaving the air this season – but the presence of ABC's acclaimed drama served as a constant reminder that ABC had established itself as a leader in the 'event' and 'appointment' TV markets. While the world shifts away from scheduled viewing, relying more and more on online, DVD, and on-demand, there are few programs that rank as must-see-on-broadcast-night. Lost not only qualifies in that category, it practically invented it for the modern age of TV viewers.
McPherson highlighted Lost to the press and advertising gurus in attendance at today's Upfronts, and assured all that ABC would remain the leader in this niche. And what better way to introduce the shows that ABC hopes will fill Lost's 'event' status shoes than Lost star Matthew Fox.

Chicago – ABC continues to look for another “Lost” or “Modern Family” this fall with seven new shows announced today at their 2010 upfronts presentation. The network will see changes on four nights of the week but will bring back the sometimes on-the-bubble “Castle” in its Monday night timeslot while saying goodbye to “FlashForward,’ “Scrubs,” and “Better Off Ted”.
Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment Group, said this morning via press release, “Our passion for great storytelling is at the core of everything we do. Finding and supporting writers, directors, producers and actors who share that passion is critical to our success. Our shows are the product of these collaborations, and we are thrilled to add 10 new series to our schedule next year.” (Seven will premiere in the fall with three more reserved for midseason.)
