Blu-ray
Arrow Video
1970, 1971 / 1.85: 1 / 190 Min.
Starring Robert Quarry, Michael Murphy, Mariette Hartley
Written by Bob Kelljan, Yvonne Wilder
Directed by Bob Kelljan
An aristocratic bloodsucker from the old country is the main attraction of Bob Kelljan’s Count Yorga, Vampire, but what drives the movie is an actual motor, a 1969 Volkswagen bus with a blood red trim. That amiable vehicle, the stoner’s favorite mode of transportation, is front and center in several pivotal scenes (Yorga even hitches a ride) and comes to symbolize the film’s premise; an old-fashioned vampire at large in The Me Decade. The set-up is ripe for a satire like Joe Dante’s The Howling, but instead of taking the stuffing out of horror movie cliches, Kelljan is dead serious about the undead.

As the ‘60s gave way to the ‘70s, vampires on film were stuck in a rut of crumbling castles and cotton candy cobwebs. It was time for an update; to rid the screen of the stagecoaches and street lamps. It was time for Count Yorga, Vampire (1970), a fun little romp brought into the modern age by a world class turn from Robert Quarry as the titular bloodsucker.
Yorga was released by American International Pictures (we’re back in Aip territory – and it’s a glorious place to be) in June stateside, with a rollout around the world shortly thereafter. But that wasn’t the easiest thing to do; the filmmakers had to submit Yorga a few times to the MPAA to achieve their desired rating – a Gp (equivalent to a PG at the time), which they eventually received. And wouldn’t you know it? The film was very successful, especially on the drive-in circuit.

Before grindhouse director Bob Kelljan turned exclusively to television by the late 1970s, he had accidentally carved out a small triptych of derivative American vampire flicks, beginning with his first solo effort, 1970’s Count Yorga, Vampire. The actor turned director initially starred in his first co-directed effort, the incest drama Flesh of My Flesh (1969), but the success of his Dracula rip-off would carry on to a 1971 sequel before assuming duties for the Blaxploitation sequel Scream Blacula Scream (1973). Initially conceived as a soft-core porno, Kelljan eventually crafted this into a sort of Bram Stoker parody, although not everyone involved in the production seemed to be aware of this.

When the overlord of the damned rises again to prowl the shadows, who will stand against The Return Of Count Yorga? Robert Quarry is back as one of the most dapper vampires to ever set up shop in California in this thrilling sequel that really raises the stakes. Revived by the well-known supernatural properties of the Santa Ana winds, our undead leading man takes to the streets with an unquenchable thirst. In search of new blood, Yorga moves next door to an orphanage. But when he crosses paths with a beautiful young woman, the Count's thoughts turn to love.

Two of my favorite Aip horror movies, Count Yorga, Vampire and The Return of Count Yorga, are both making their way to Blu-ray this October. Scream Factory will be handling the release of the sequel and we now have final release details, including the list of bonus features.
"A horrifying love story… with bite! Scream Factory proudly presents The Return of Count Yorga in its North American Blu-ray debut on October 13, 2015. The sequel to the hit 1970 original film Count Yorga, Vampire, the Deathmaster makes his triumphant return in this release, complete with special features including an audio commentary with film historian Steve Haberman and actor Rudy De Luca (Dracula: Dead and Loving It).

If there are two things ol’ Xiii digs, it’s a good ol’ fashioned creature feature and a film with a ton o’ heart made by some folks that actually give a damn about our beloved horror biz! Well creeps, it looks like I have found an upcomin’ flick entitled The Last Frankenstein that promises to contain a heapin’ helpin’ of both o’ those ingredients, and wouldn’t ya know it, the film’s die-rector David Weaver has just strolled on in to the Crypt o’ Xiii!
Famous Monsters. As we dive into the deep end and begin discussin’ your upcomin’ fright flick The Last Frankenstein, let’s hop in the Delorean and chat about how ya got started and how the seeds of Tlf were planted.
David Weaver. I started at [upstate New York college] Fulton Montgomery Community College, and when I left there I studied at the New York Film Academy and did some short films there.

Wreckage (2010)
Directed by: John Asher
Written by: David Frigerio
Cast: Aaron Paul (Rick), Mike Erwin (Jared), Cameron Richardson (Kate), Scoot McNairy (Frank), Kelly Kruger (Jessica), Roger Perry (Sheriff Macabee), John Asher (Deputy Berry), Lisa Ann Walter (Doctor Richardson)
Cult horror movies that have actors in them that go on to mega stardom create a separate category all their own. Kevin Bacon in “Friday the 13th”, George Clooney in “Horror High”, and Johnny Depp in the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. I don’t know what it is, but it ruins it for me a little bit, because when I watch the movie thereafter, that’s all I see. Then there are the films that might have been buried before (sometimes for good reason), but enjoy a resurrection, and maybe even a redesigned cover with the now famous star’s name displayed prominently, even...

The Twilight Zone Movie, Head, Gator Bait, and Tarantula are a few of the movies they’ve screened in the past at Webster University’s Strange Brew film series. Always the first Wednesday evening of every month, the fun happens at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, Mo 63143). This week, on Wednesday January 2nd at 8pm, they’re venturing it’s sheer ’70s madness with the amazing The Thing With Two Heads. Admission is only $4!
If you thought The Defiant Ones was the last word in forced race relations, check out the 1972 classic The Thing With Two Heads. Ray Milland stars as transplant surgeon Max Kirshner, a mean old bigot suffering from terminal cancer, masterminding an experimental technique for transplanting heads, the goal being to save his own life. His assistant, Dr. Philip...

Okay kids, grab your sleeping bags, pitch your tent, cause we're going campy! Openly racist Dr. Maxwell Kirshner (Ray Milland) is a brilliant surgeon in the art of transplants. Dr. Kirshner is a wealthy man although he doesn't have long to live. His staff, including one of his best surgeons, Dr. Philip Desmond (Roger Perry), believe he only has an arthritic condition that stints his ability to perform surgeries.Dr. Kirshner is performing more hidden surgery than one would believe, in the privacy of his own home. He has mastered the art of transplanting one...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.
