One person who was not happy to hear President Joe Biden and Donald Trump agreed to debate each other? Independent presidential candidate and brain worm conqueror Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Shortly after news of the debates broke Wednesday, Kennedy took to X/Twitter to claim the two most recent presidents were “colluding to lock America into a head-to-head match-up that 80% say they do not want.”
“They are trying to exclude me from their debate because they are afraid I would win,” Kennedy said. “Keeping viable candidates off the debate stage undermines democracy.

Robert Kennedy Jr. confirmed to The New York Times that NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former Minnesota governor and professional wrestler Jesse Ventura were on the top of his shortlist to serve as his running mate in his independent presidential bid.
Rodgers, who shares Kennedy’s opposition to the covid vaccine, would be an unconventional choice, to say the least, as he is still an active NFL player, expected to start for the New York Jets this fall.
Ventura, who served one term as Minnesota governor, has in the past considered his own independent presidential bid. Since leaving office, he has hosted a reality television series focused on conspiracy theories, but he urged people to get the vaccine during the covid crisis, and even bemoaned those who did not wear masks. He introduced Kennedy at a voter rally in Arizona last month.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has scheduled three presidential debates next fall with a slightly earlier timeline.
The three debates are now scheduled for Sept. 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX; Oct. 1 at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va; and Oct. 9 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
A vice presidential debate has been scheduled on Sept. 25 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.
The debates will start at 9 p.m. Et and will run for 90 minutes.
What is unclear is participation.
The commission has been in a battle with the Republican National Committee over the debate schedule and format. Last year, the RNC withdrew from the commission, which has organized the general election debates since 1987. The RNC complained that the commission was “biased” and asked for a series of changes. Still, candidates decide themselves whether to participate, and there is nothing that prevents some alternative effort to organize a debate.

Comedian Dana Carvey is taking a break from both work and social media in the wake of his son’s death. Dex Carvey died from an accidental overdose on Thursday. Carvey announced the news on Instagram, where he wrote the break is the result of “trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3.”
He wrote, “This is just to say thank you. My wife and I have been overwhelmed by your love, your personal stories, your compassion.”
“We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we could ever express in words. I will be taking a break from work and social media — trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3.”
Carvey’s statement concluded, “We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way.

There was a very emotional moment at the very end of this weekend’s Saturday Night Live.
As guest host of the night Jason Momoa signed off from Saturday’s episode (November 18), Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost held up a sign that said “We love you Dana and Paula.”
The sweet message was meant for SNL alum Dana Carvey and wife Paula Zwagerman, after the couple’s oldest son, Dex Carvey, died earlier this week from an accidental drug overdose at 32.
Keep reading to find out more…
Dana spent seven seasons on the SNL cast from 1986 to 1993, especially known for his impressions of George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot, as well as original characters like Church Lady, Hans (to Kevin Nealon‘s Franz) and Garth alongside Mike Myers in “Wayne’s World” sketches. He also won five consecutive Emmy nominations while on the show.

As Kenneth Branagh brings his third Hercule Poirot film to theaters with “A Haunting in Venice,” fans of the Agatha Christie character might debate: Who is the best actor to ever play the mustachioed Belgian detective? And which versions simply didn’t work?
We’ve compiled a list of the most notable actors to portray the famously fussy sleuth —from Tony Randall to PBS favorite David Suchet — and ranked them with both how true they are to Christie’s vision and how enjoyable their portrayal is to audience.

7. Tony Randall (1965)
The “Odd Couple” actor’s one outing as the detective in the Frank Tashlin-directed film “The Alphabet Murders” leans very hard into comedy. The result: Despite the mustache and bald cap and an occasionally passable accent, we get very little of “the little grey cells” character we expect and far more sight gigs and slapstick.

During his Saturday Night Live run in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Dana Carvey created a lot of characters. He did impeccable celebrity impressions of Johnny Carson, George H.W. Bush, Ross Perot, and more. He created several recurring characters that became pop culture phenomena.

Mark Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" films, but even if you add up all of that character's screen time, the Jedi role is tiny compared to his voice work as the Joker in the DC/Warner Bros. Animation TV series and films. He's been cackling in the scariest (and hands-down best) way since 1992 when he was cast in the role for the Emmy Award-winning animated series "Batman: The Animated Series," which was created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski.
Since that time, we've heard him mess with Batman as the Clown Prince of Crime in animated films, "Superman: The Animated Series," "The New Batman Adventures," "Static Shock," "Birds of Prey," "Justice League Action," and so many others. Like the late, great Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman, Hamill has become synonymous with the role. So it's surprising to hear that Hamill almost said no...

Comedian Dana Carvey appeared as a regular cast member on "Saturday Night Live" from 1986 to 1993, and it could be argued those were some of the best years of the long-running sketch comedy show. And many of the accolades from that era go to Carvey. The list of his memorable characters is long and led to two successful "SNL"-inspired films, "Wayne's World" and "Wayne's World 2." Party on, Garth!
But Garth Algar is just the tip of the iceberg for Carvey's "SNL" career. President George Bush Sr., presidential candidate Ross Perot, Johnny Carson, and Tom Brokaw (Brokaw's pre-tapes remain one of my favorite "SNL" skits) were some of his memorable impersonations. Original characters included Hans from the weightlifting Hans and Franz duo, The Grumpy Old Man, and singer/songwriter Derek Stevens (you know you sang along about "Choppin' Broccoli").

The 1990s were a watershed year for cinema. Perhaps at no other time in recent film history have legitimate, well-made blockbuster films shared an equitable stage with prestigious and cerebral-minded independent and even foreign cinema. 1992 was a year that many will remember for this wide range of film diversity. The year itself was defined by the Bush 41, Ross Perot, and Bill Clinton presidential election face off, a string of scandals in the British Royal Family, and the peak of the Grunge rock movement all over the music charts. But it was the movies of this year that deserve

In 1992 the presidential race came down to three main candidates: the Republican incumbent, President George H.W. Bush, Democrat Bill Clinton, and Independent Ross Perot. But they weren’t the only contenders for the office. Terence Alan Smith also campaigned—as “America’s first drag queen for president.”
Smith, under his drag name Joan Jett Blakk, ran as the nominee of the Queer Nation Party on a platform of universal health care, defunding police and the military, and increased funding for education.
“Smith championed policies that are mainstream today,” writes Whitney Skauge, director of the Oscar-contending short documentary The Beauty President, which recounts Smith’s 1992 bid. “Against a social and political environment of homophobia in the 1990s, it was a defiant act of bravery for Smith to be an openly gay Black man, dressed in full drag, running for the highest seat in government.”

A hysterical clip of Dana Carvey debuting his President Joe Biden impression on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert went viral earlier this week. “I do him at the town hall when he’s like the gentle father to the country,” Carvey said, “and he looks like the alien when he came off the spaceship in Close Encounters.”
“There’s a lot there if you don’t worry about the fact that he’s 78,” he continued. “He gets a little confused sometimes. It doesn’t mean you’re attacking him personally.

It’s the most common question whenever an outsider — be it Ross Perot or Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump — runs for a position of power in an entrenched political system: Having big ideas or exciting the electorate is one thing, but when you challenge the political orthodoxy, how do you actually govern if you happen to win?

A look back at how “SNL” sent up the legendary TV host, who died Saturday at 87
In 1992, Kevin Nealon donned suspenders to play Larry King in a sketch focused on the marital troubles of Burt Reynolds (Phil Hartman) and Loni Anderson (Julia Sweeney). To get the estranged pair to open up on camera, Nealon’s King at one point confesses, “On my left foot I have six toes.”
One year later, “SNL” sent up King’s legendary interview with the reclusive Marlon Brando — with Kevin Nealon channeling King and a fat-suited John Travolta playing up Brando’s eccentricity. Though the sketch somehow skips King and Brando’s real-life kiss on the mouth.
In a 1996 cold open, Nealon’s King tried to take the reins of an interview with a rambling Ross Perot (who was in the midst of his second long-shot bid for the presidency): “Larry, I see you’re glazing over,...

Larry King, who had a legendary six-decade career on TV and radio and pioneered the live interview, died on Saturday at age 87, according to a statement from his Ora Media company.
King, who had a 25-year run hosting CNN’s “Larry King Live,” died at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized last month with Covid-19 and had been treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit. “For 63 years and across the platforms of radio, television and digital media, Larry’s many thousands of interviews, awards, and global acclaim stand as a testament to his unique and lasting talent as a broadcaster,” Ora Media said in a statement.
The suspender-clad broadcaster first rose to fame on radio before CNN hired him in 1985 to host a nightly interview show that won him widespread acclaim, high ratings and two Peabody Awards. At its peak in 1998, the show averaged 1.64 million viewers.

In “Zappa,” actor-turned-documentary filmmaker Alex Winter has constructed an elaborate deep-dive into the sprawling career of Frank Zappa in his own words. The movie, now available in theaters and VOD, follows the iconic rock star through every stage of his life, from his youth to the last few years of life. Winter knows a thing or two about rock star mythologizing from the other side of his career, as the actor who plays Bill in the beloved “Bill and Ted” movies. But “Zappa” represents a departure from his other recent documentary projects, which have dealt with internet culture and online conspiracies.
Instead, the movie uses a complex assemblage of archival materials (including Zappa’s own home movies) to create a fascinating new window into the human behind the star. To that end, “Zappa” has much in common with “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” filmmaker Brett Morgen’s 2015 portrait of the ill-fated Nirvana frontman,...

Everyone laughed at Ross Perot. If the biggest third-party threat to the presidency since the Bull Moose Party hadn’t existed, late-night comics would have invented him.

Dana Carvey doing Perot doing Neil Diamond after Perot’s famed 1993 Nafta debate with Vice President Al Gore was a hit (“You don’t bring me flowers… Yer not listenin’!”). The late Ross Perot will be remembered for a great many things, from running for president in 1992 as a third-party candidate and scoring 19% of the vote, arguably handing the White House to Bill Clinton, to founding the billion dollar company Electronic Data Systems and organizing a daring 1979 rescue of two Americans imprisoned in Iran.
But when many people look back at Ross Perot, the image they recall is Dana Carvey’s hysterical impersonation of him on Saturday Night Live. His nasal speaking voice and quirky personality made him a perfect...

Ross Perot, who died at the age of 89 on Tuesday, is perhaps the most notable presidential candidate to run from a third-party, which he did in 1992 and 1996. But anyone who watched “Saturday Night Live” in the 1990s know Perot mainly due to Dana Carvey’s great impression of the Texas billionaire-turned-White House hopeful.

H. Ross Perot, the Texas billionaire who became a seemingly perennial third-party presidential candidate of the 1990s, died this morning after a five-month struggle with leukemia. He was 89.
“In business and in life, Ross was a man of integrity and action,” said James Fuller, a representative for the Perot family, in a statement to the press. “A true American patriot and a man of rare vision, principle and deep compassion, he touched the lives of countless people through his unwavering support of the military and veterans and through his charitable endeavors.”
Perot ran for president in 1992 and 1996, and became something of a pop culture phenomenon for his quirky self-funded TV campaign infomercials, parodied on Saturday Night Live and late night talk shows. Though his Texas twang, frequent use of charts and catchphrase “It’s just that simple” made him an easy punchline for comedians like SNL‘s Dana Carvey, Perot’s impact,...

Rumors swirled of President Trump’s unhappiness with last week’s Sean Spicer sketch. It’s not that he didn’t enjoy the sketch, per se, but despised the fact that a woman portrayed his Press Secretary. So, what if the President himself was portrayed by a middle-aged black woman, and not even a heavily disguised one at that? These are the questions “Saturday Night Live” has to ask, because every day comes a new, terrifying CNN push notification — and with it, an irrelevant tweet from the Commander-in-Chief. Even so, “SNL” didn’t stick to politics for the entire hour, and when they strayed from the news, it was often in error.

From the first time I saw it until this moment, two days before what might just be the most important, potentially resonant (for good and ill) American presidential election since the days of the Civil War, no other movie has expanded in my view more meaningfully, more ambiguously, with more fascination than has Robert Altman’s Nashville. We often hear of movies which “transcend” their genres, or their initial ambitions or intentions, and often built into that alleged transcendence is a condescension to said genre, or those ambitions or intentions, as if the roots were somehow corrupt or unworthy, in need of reconstruction. If the form of Nashville transcends anything, it’s the shape and scope of the multi-character drama as we’d come to know it in 1975, which was dominated at the time by disaster movies and their jam-packed casts filled with old Hollywood veterans and Oscar winners. But...

I’ve been back from my Oregon vacation for a couple of weeks now, and though the getaway was a good and necessary one, I’m still in the process of mentally unpacking from a week and a half of relaxing and thinking mostly only about things I wanted to think about. (I also discovered a blackberry cider brewed in the region, the source of a specific sort of relaxation that I’m still finding myself pining for.) It hasn’t helped that our time off and immediate time back coincided with the bombast and general insanity of the Republic National Convention, followed immediately by the disarray and sense of restored hope that bookended the Democrats’ week-long party. The extremity of emotions engendered by those two events, coupled with a profoundly unsettling worry over the base level of our current political discourse and where it may lead this country, hasn...

Jimmy Kimmel's street interview segments typically make the interviewees look stupid and uninformed. So last night, when he asked the nice folks on Hollywood Boulevard if they could name Marvel's Avengers and then U.S. presidents, it was safe to assume that we'd get a bunch of people who knew tons about comic book heroes and nothing about our nation's history. And yes, some of that did happen. But the best answers came from the people who didn't know much about either, like the guy who listed Dragnet as an Avenger and Ross Perot as a president, or the woman who thought the Avengers were Power Rangers. Shoutout to the woman at the end who rattled off more presidents than most people would begin to know in quick succession, but then, weirdly, couldn't name any presidents from the last century except Nixon. ...

The NBC favorite has made a sport of parodying Trump's narcissism and extravagance over the years, skewering everything from his marriage and subsequent divorce to his other marriage and subsequent divorce.
While we witnessed Trump's evolution from buffoonish business mogul to shockingly effective vote hustler, SNL has been there to offer satirization of the already cartoon-esque billionaire. Now, as we become closer and closer to the election, we're taking a peek back at the candidate's decades-long relationship with the show.
