Barbara Crampton is the queen of indie horror. Gracious and humble as she is, it’s a title she would most likely reject. These are precisely among the qualities that make her an icon: she’s a leader in the industry who makes it a point to bring others up, a gigantic star too nice to ever act like one. She’s the absolute best and deserves to be celebrated not just during #IndieHorrorMonth, but all year long.
From her earliest genre performances in movies like Re-Animator, Chopping Mall, and From Beyond, there was something special about Crampton. She could lend gravity and empathy to even the most outrageous scenario, from the notorious decapitated head scene in Re-Animator to the giant robot battles of Full Moon’s Robot Wars, to which she brings energy and spunk worthy of Marion Ravenswood. She could be a Bdsm-clad mad scientist in From Beyond...

Both dramas to release on home entertainment and digital platforms after virtual cinema debut.
Film Movement has picked up all North American rights to female-directed coming-of-age dramas Once Upon A River and Carmilla and will release both through its virtual cinema initiative this year.
Feature debutante Haroula Rose’s Once Upon A River is based on Bonnie Jo Campbell’s Midwestern novel of the same name.
The story takes place in 1970s rural Michigan as a traumatised young woman (newcomer Kenadi DelaCerna) embarks on a river odyssey to find her estranged mother. Film Movement acquired the film from the producers.

As the calendar changes from October to November, Mexican horror fans will ascend for the twelfth year on Morbido Fest, a Mexico City-based festival dedicated to all things macabre, organized and executed by Morbido Group CEO and founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger.
This year’s festival will kick off Oct. 30 with a spectacle grander in its ambition than any Morbido inauguration before. Taking place within the Esperanza Iris City theater, more than 60 artists will perform six choreographed musical numbers with Guisa taking the reigns as master of ceremonies. Those familiar with Guisa and his public persona won’t be surprised to hear that his opening night wardrobe alone includes eight costumes, with more to come in the following days.
Somehow, the TV network owner, festival director, writer, publisher and radio host found time to make appearances in three high-profile films screening at this year’s fest: Paco Plaza’s “Eye for an Eye,...

Vivid performances power the story of a single mother faced with terrifying choices when a drug dealer invades her home
The flicker of exploitation-movie glee in the title of Abner Pastoll’s third feature flowers horribly in the central dilemma facing single mother Sarah (Sarah Bolger) when her home is invaded by criminal bottom-feeder Tito (Andrew Simpson). Like The Wire’s Omar, he is a dealer who steals from other dealers, looking for somewhere to stash his ill-gotten gains. Not only must Sarah shield her two children from the interloper, but there’s the issue of whom the drugs really belong to.
Set in an unnamed Northern Irish city (with soaring drone shots of Belfast), A Good Woman Is Hard to Find also semi-successfully blends in kitchen-sink grit, emphasising Sarah’s precarious status in trips to the supermarket where she struggles to settle the bill, and her vulnerability in the...

Director Abner Pastoll’s icy Irish thriller opens brilliantly with a blood smudged woman showering while an ominous score throbs in the backdrop, implying something petrifying is about to happen. The music explodes into a terrifying crescendo as the scene flits into a low gliding aerial view of a suburban neighbourhood, recalling the eerie intro to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
We then dart back in time to meet protagonist Sarah (Sarah Bolger): a twenty-something, single mother, battling grief following the recent death of her husband. Sarah’s life is then hurled into further turmoil after local ruffian Tito (Andrew Simpson) breaks into her home to hide a stash of cocaine he stole from local gangsters.
After a quite tight set-up, Ronan Blaney’s script simmers during slow scenes establishing secondary characters, which are hugely detrimental to the temper and flow. While more emphasis should have been on plot progression,...

The UK's biggest horror film festival has just announced the opening and closing night films for its 20th anniversary. The Ant Timpson thriller Come to Daddy starring Elijah Wood will open the show, while Abner Pastoll's bloody Belfast crime story A Good Woman is Hard to Find will close out the fest. Elijah Wood puts in a career best performance as thirty-something Norval in Come to Daddy, who receives an out-of-the-blue invitation to visit his perpetually uncaring dad. The hilarious, inventively gross, core-shocking adventure moves smartly towards its uncompromising and unexpected finale. It was written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler). Abner Pastoll's superbly crafted A Good Woman is Hard to Find showcases a tour-de-force performance by Sarah Bolger, who plays a recently widowed mother...

Some stills have come our way for Abner Pastoll's next thriller, the Sarah Bolger starrer A Good Woman is Hard to Find. The film follows a recently widowed young mother (played by Bolger) who goes to great and violent lengths to protect her children as she seeks the truth behind her husband's murder. We've also learned that the film's score will be handled by synth composer Matthew Pusti, known in synthwave circles as Makeup and Vanity Set. While his songs have popped up on many film soundtracks, A Good Woman marks his first feature score. The thriller recently wrapped post-production and will, I'm sure, be popping up on many a festival schedules in the near future. A Good Woman was written by Ronan Blaney and...

Belgium's Wallimage has awarded four filmmakers significant project investment in the company's highly competitive 85th year of helping to bolster its local film industry. Two genre films in particular have caught our attention with Wallimage's support becoming a crucial vote of confidence for the projects that are both currently in development. The first is Mandy, the second feature film by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow), starring Nicolas Cage, which is set to film this summer in Belgium. The second is the upcoming Irish thriller A Good Woman Is Hard to Find directed by Abner Pastoll (Road Games), who is working with Frakas following their success with Raw. A Good Woman, described by Wallimage as "Ken Loach meets Tarantino", recently cast Sarah Bolger and was written...

Short of the DayA high-octane short.
It just takes a momentary twist to make a good film great. Think about The Sixth Sense: until it’s final revelation that [Spoiler (?)] Bruce Willis has been dead the whole time, the most intriguing bit of that film was wondering how a mook like Willis got a doctorate in psychology. But then they drop that twist and oh shit, you got yourself a movie.
Getaway Driver, a short film directed by Abner Pastoll, is another example of this. What starts out as a cool, slick, high-octane short about a lady and her pug trying to escape a bad guy via a sweet ride becomes something else entirely in its final seconds, something I’m obviously not going to spoil here. As for that escape, Pastoll and director of photography Richard Bell have choreographed a thrilling, breakneck, nail-biter of a chase set in a parking garage that’s highly reminiscent — in...

Writer/director Abner Pastoll has debuted a high-octane short called Getaway Driver. The stylish film, shot over 10 hours in a mutli-storey car park in New Malden, South West of London, features vintage cars, one cool pug, and an ending you won’t expect.
"I’ve always love car chases,” said Abner Pastoll. “Some of my favourite movies, The Driver, Breakdown, To Live and Die in La, all have seriously epic chases. I wanted to capture something in that vein, a little old-school but unique and quirky.”

What is it? Jeanne and Jean are a young couple in love, but after their fairy tale wedding the pair are brought before the local lord to make an offering. He forces himself on her instead before sharing her with his court, and when even her new husband turns his back on her she finds pained, messy comfort with a devil-sent imp who offers to help in exchange for her soul.
Why buy it? Eiichi Yamamoto’s early ’70s slice of psychedelia, erotica, and still-relevant commentary is a beautifully disturbing descent into our shared history of sexual violence, oppression, and the abuse of authority. If it sounds heavy, well, it is — it’s also extremely graphic with watercolor frames and hand-drawn animation that capture the atrocities with gorgeously imaginative imagery. It...

Road Games Blu-ray / DVD: "After a disastrous summer trip, Jack (Andrew Simpson, Rebellion) finds himself hitchhiking through the sun-drenched rural French countryside with nothing but his British passport. Unaware of dangers that are plaguing the roads, he tries without much success to get home. Along the way, he partners with another hitchhiker, a beautiful French girl, Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume, Kiss of the Damned). But when they accept a ride from a local oddball (Frédéric Pierrot, The Returned), the pair find themselves thrown in a deadly game of cat and mouse in which nothing is what it seems. Bursting with nonstop twists and turns and an undercurrent of Hitchcockian malice, this riveting psychological thriller is a hell of a ride.

One of the more intriguing thrillers I’ve seen in some time is Road Games, which was written and directed by Abner Pastoll and recently debuted on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Starring Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Barbara Crampton, and Frédéric Pierrot, the film begins as a whodunit road movie and is later infused with some unexpectedly fun slasher undertones.
Daily Dead recently sat down with both Pastoll and genre legend Crampton to hear more about their collaboration, Pastoll’s approach to crafting the film’s mystery, their experiences shooting Road Games, and much more.
Congrats on making a movie that keeps you guessing and takes a few unexpected turns. Abner, what were your inspirations behind this story and your approach to really toying with viewers?
Abner Pastoll: In terms of playing with people’s suspicions, those inspirations are totally from Hitchcock’s films because he would always do that.

Hitchin’ a Ride: Pastoll’s Debut an Assortment of Tropes
No, it’s not a remake of the 1981 Richard Franklin thriller starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, but Abner Pastoll’s debut borrows the title, along with elements from a number of other, far better narratives for Road Games. Curiously, for most of the running time, his characters are actually not even on the road, but this is only one of several aggravating details in a film laboring to conjure thrills solely through the use of withholding pertinent information from the audience for an improbable reveal. Though it has all the right elements to convey technical proficiency, this is a watered down genre treatment which does disservice to notable cast members, which includes amongst its talent the strange plumage of 80s cult star Barbara Crampton.

I love movies like Road Games that seem to toy with you from beginning to end, and yet, sometimes those are the hardest films to discuss in a review because you never want to reveal too much for potential viewers. That being said, writer/director Abner Pastoll does a fantastic job of playing up suspicions throughout Road Games, a film that’s shrouded in a dubious sense of mystery and has a bit of a Hitchcockian sensibility to it as well. Its ending may be a bit divisive to many, but I dug the direction Pastoll goes with his surprising, take-no-prisoners finale.
Road Games follows British hitchhiker Jack (Andrew Simpson) as he makes his way through the sun-soaked countryside in France, traveling with only his passport and doing everything he can to get back home to England after his idyllic vacation goes horribly wrong. Along the way, he crosses paths...

Jack’s (Andrew Simpson) European trip has slowed down some since hitting the French countryside as the number of passing motorists willing to give him a lift has dwindled to zero. He catches a distracting break when a car stops — not to pick him up, but to drop off Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume) after a violent argument with her boyfriend — giving him someone to talk with while awaiting the next good Samaritan. The two hit it off despite his limited French vocabulary, and he quickly learns why getting a ride has been so difficult. A serial killer has been stalking the rural roads. At this point some of you more familiar with the slasher/killer genre might suspect this film is a remake of Richard Franklin’s identically-titled Australian chiller from 1981 starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Stacy Keach. It is not. The pair are saved — at least temporarily — when a man named Grizard (Frédéric Pierrot) picks...

Somewhere between The Hitcher and High Tension exists Abner Pastoll’s Road Games, a bright, colorful descent into hitchhiking madness. Of course, with the mention of Alexandre Aja’s *arguably* mind-bending thriller, one can assume there’s more to Pastoll’s story than meets the eye. A killer terrorizes lonely travelers begging for a quick ride, but his/her identity remains masked, because he/she could be any of the (few) characters we’ve already encountered. For an hour and a half, Pastoll unfolds this countryside”Whodunit” caper – one littered with distracting red herrings – but, herein lies the problem: the mystery itself isn’t very mysterious.
Andrew Simpson stars as Jack, a ride-needing wanderer who can’t seem to catch a break. While seeking transportation, he’s joined by a female companion named Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who gets thrown out of a car after bickering with its male driver.
