Michael Jackson‘s “Bad” and Ghostbusters are two quintessential elements of 1980s popular culture. With that in mind, it only makes sense that “Bad” has a connection to Ray Parker Jr.’s theme song for the first Ghostbusters movie. Notably, a famous musician discussed his experience working with the King of Pop on the album Bad.
The similarity between Ray Parker Jr.’s ‘Ghostbusters’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’
Jackson made history when five of the singles from his album Bad topped the Billboard Hot 100. Those songs were “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Dirty Diana,” “Man in the Mirror,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” and the album’s title track. The latter might be the most famous song from the album today, partially due to its epic music video.

The latest Ghostbusters movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, has arrived, giving audiences another chance to see the original ‘busters, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, don their paranormal-hunting jumpsuits once again. Now, in a new interview, Hudson has praised Sony for having “stepped up” with the new film, elevating it beyond some of its recent predecessors.
Specifically, Hudson referred to the Ghostbusters reboot — which re-launched the franchise in 2016 — as “disappointing.” Speaking to The Independent, he praised the film’s director Paul Feig, and described its all-female leading cast as “brilliantly funny on their own,” but overall felt that the film lacked intention.
“Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie,” he said. “Fans were really invested in the story and the characters and I think it was disappointing. I enjoyed the movie but I think it wasn...

This article contains spoilers for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire."
In the universe of "Ghostbusters," the supernatural entities take a variety of forms. Most notably, there are Ectoplast creatures like Slimer, Muncher, and Pukey who look like gross-out, cartoonish blobs. A more malicious spirit like Gozer the Gozerian is a Class 7 Deity of Destruction, while the Grey Lady (aka the Library Ghost) is a Class 4 Semi-Anchored Entity. Gertrude Aldridge in "Ghostbusters: Answer The Call" is similar to the Grey Lady, but fluctuates between more of a poltergeist and a Class 4 Semi-Anchored Entity. And then there's Egon Spengler himself, one of the original Ghostbusters who appeared in "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" in a spiritual form ranging from Class 2 or 3 before fully manifesting as a Class 4 Full Torso Apparition.
This is to say, "Ghostbusters" has played around with the various levels, presentations, and styles of ghosts for the last 40 years, and is still finding new...

You probably already know what will be number one on this list. The “Ghostbusters” franchise has gone through its ups and downs, reboots and legacyquels. But as the first film approaches its 40th anniversary this June, there’s little doubt in anybody’s mind that it remains the definitive ghost-catching movie of them all.
In the early ’80s, Dan Aykroyd — then just fresh off his stint as an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member — was inspired by his own belief in the supernatural to write a script about a group of eccentric academics who start a pest-control business where the “pests” they’re catching are malevolent spirits. Recruiting former “SNL” castmate Bill Murray to star, comedian Harold Ramis to help rewrite the screenplay, and “Meatballs” and “Stripes” filmmaker Ivan Reitman to direct. The final film, which hit theaters in 1984, starred Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the four Ghostbusters,...

Major spoilers follow.
Ever since a quartet of blue-collar fringe science-exploring schlubs first formed an organization known as the Ghostbusters back in 1984, the Ray Parker Jr.-led refrain of "Who ya gonna call?" has been both a promise and a cross to bear. While the original 'Busters (and their female counterparts from 2016) have continually struggled to convince themselves and others that non-corporeal entities are very real and need to be handled, they've also been burdened with the fact that ghostbusting is a full-time job with few tangible benefits. In essence, everyone from Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Raymond Stanz (Dan Aykroyd), Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) to Phoebe Spengler (Mckenna Grace), her mother Callie (Carrie Coon), and others have been so continually preoccupied with the afterlife that they've barely carved out a present life for themselves.

Carrie Coon is pleased that her 'Ghostbusters' character is "grounded in reality".The 43-year-old actress returns as Callie Spengler in 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' and praised the film's writers for making her alter ego a mother with flaws.Carrie told The Hollywood Reporter: "Callie feels like a very real mom who's maybe not always great at the job, and makes mistakes and has to make repairs."That, to me, feels really grounded in reality in a way that movie moms aren't always, especially when they're serving a function in a story like Callie kind of is in this second film."And so I just appreciate that (co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan) are always writing a family dynamic that feels like it could be very, very real, even though we're busting ghosts."The 'Gone Girl' actress has admiration for Jason after he handed the...

Why do these new Ghostbusters movies land so unremarkably? Not Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot, which was attacked by pissant trolls. My opening statement is reserved for Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Gil Kenan’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Kenan tackles the third sequel in recognized Ghostbusters continuity, which hardly gives audiences a reason to stay excited about any more franchise continuations. Plotting feels superficially engineered to sell the nostalgia thrills of seeing the original Ghostbusters suit up or so we can relive old scenes anew; a film built around team poses and one-liners that misremember how Ivan Reitman’s predecessors made bustin’ feel so good.
After the events of Afterlife, the Spenglers and Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd) move into the iconic New York City firehouse where it all started. Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) sees her romance with Gary flourish, while her kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) make spectral entrapment a family business.

The Ghostbusters franchise has never seen complete success in its tenure. While the original Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray has been a cult classic that has been paid tribute to and has been parodied multiple times over the years, the subsequent films have been a hit or miss. It hit a new low with the all-female reboot starring prominent SNL alumni.
However, the franchise seems to have gone further down the hole as its latest entry Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire gets the franchise’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score. The film came on the heels of the well-received Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which starred Paul Rudd and a new cast. Despite the presence of the beloved characters and the return of the Og Ghostbusters, the new film seems to be unimpressive. However, fans still seem to be excited.

Plot: After having relocated to NYC to fight ghosts, the Spengler find themselves tangling with an old nemesis of the Ghostbusters, Mayor Walter Peck (William Atherton), who wants to shut them down for good. Meanwhile, an ancient evil will be unleashed over the city, releasing all the spirits caught over the last forty years.
Review: I was a big fan of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman’s film skillfully blended nostalgia with a new take on the franchise that opened up the Ghostbusters universe in an inclusive way. It welcomed new fans without alienating old ones, something the 2016 reboot notoriously failed at. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire seems to be aimed at building the franchise out more extensively. While it’s still a fun, nostalgia-driven return to the Ghostbusting universe, it’s not as good as the last film and spreads itself too thin to do the new characters justice.

Fittingly enough given its subject matter, the Ghostbusters franchise can’t seem to stop haunting audiences no matter how many times it seems like and turns out to be a futile effort. Ghostbusters II is a lazy retread incited by one of the dumbest retcons in movie history, the 2016 reboot was bombarded by misogynistic online harassment before it ever got a proper shot, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife seemed to be under the delusion that the working class schmoes from the original were actually Jedi.
Yet despite all this, the attempts keep being made and Afterlife was enough of a box office success to warrant a follow-up in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire; set to hit theaters this coming weekend. And while the stacked cast of new and returning actors alongside the inspiration from The Real Ghostbusters animated series for its villains do make Frozen Empire feel like more of a substantial leap forward,...

Og Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson appeared on The Tonight Show on Friday night to promote the forthcoming Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The real highlight, however, came when the pair joined up with Fallon, The Roots, and and the man himself, Ray Parker Jr., to perform the Ghostbusters theme song with classroom instruments.
Murray and Hudson also sat down for a two-segment interview with Fallon, where they discussed the franchise’s legacy and the upcoming sequel.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the second installment in the rebooted franchise. Set to hit theaters on March 22nd, 2024, the film stars Murray, Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, and Annie Potts, along with Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Fin Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster… and Slimer.

Ken is far too sensitive to peer pressure, which is a good thing for Oscar fans because Ryan Gosling will officially perform “I’m Just Ken” at this year’s ceremony despite initially showing hesitancy. Now, will it stand as one of the best performances in Oscar history or will it go full Rob Lowe/Snow White?
I fully expect “I’m Just Ken” to be a showstopper, especially now that Gosling has confirmed he’ll be the one behind the mic and it won’t be given to somebody not even associated with the movie. However, admittedly sometimes that works out extremely well, as when Robin Williams performed “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. And while that song lost to Tarzan’s “You’ll Be In My Heart”, you can’t tell me you remember Phil Collins’ performance that night.

Halloween isn't just for children. That's why whenever scary season rolls around, you need a music playlist that keeps everyone in mind - from the kids who love the latest ghoulish Disney Channel Original Movie musical to those who got down to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" when it first came out in the '80s.
That's also why you have to get creative when it comes to the spooky songs you choose for your Allhallows' Eve playlists. If you only include songs that are explicitly Halloween-themed, like "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers or "This Is Halloween" from "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the tunes could get stale real quick. So remember to work in music that has Halloween vibes, too.

Thirteen of Michael Jackson‘s songs reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Some of those songs are incredible. On the other hand, one of them is about a killer rat.
Michael Jackson | Chris Walter / Contributor 13. ‘Ben’
“Ben” is a ballad about a killer rat that became Jackson’s first solo No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was from the film Ben, the sequel to the killer rat movie Willard. The ballad is more of a weird piece of trivia than a real song.

“Ben” is a ballad about a killer rat that became Jackson’s first solo No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was from the film Ben, the sequel to the killer rat movie Willard. The ballad is more of a weird piece of trivia than a real song.
12. ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You’ with Siedah Garrett
Jackson dabbled in numerous genres. Sadly, he wasn’t able to elevate easy-listening music with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” While this was a No. 1 single during Jackson’s peak period, it doesn’t have an accompanying music video.

I will always remember 2021 as the year Paramore's "Decode" finally came back to Spotify. The band wrote and recorded the broody, pop-goth anthem for the original "Twilight" movie in 2008, the same year Spotify launched. The "Twilight" soundtrack did massive numbers in traditional sales, and translated that popularity onto emerging streaming platforms. But after some time, it seems the rights holders of the "Twilight" Ost had some kind of clash with Spotify. For years, the entire soundtrack was available to stream there -- except for "Decode."
The absence of the song on the internet's most popular music streamer drove desperate fans in higher numbers than ever to YouTube, where, mercifully, the music video has remained available to watch since 2008. To date, the video for "Decode," in which Hayley Williams and band rock out in a forest clearing as Edward, Bella, and their nemeses zip by with fangs bared, has racked up 108,000+ comments 436 million views.

Amber Riley has made TV history with her win on The Masked Singer season eight.
During Wednesday (30 November) night’s finale of the US version of the celebrity singing series, Riley – best known for her recurring role as Mercedes on creator Ryan Murphy’s series Glee – walked away victorious.
Following the top-secret 12-week singing competition, the 36-year-old actor, who had been disguised as a gold shimmery harp, was the last standing contestant to unmask.
Riley’s newest triumph marks her second major win on a TV reality show competition. In 2013, she and her dance partner, Derek Hough, took home the coveted mirrorball trophy of Dancing with the Stars season 17.
Other celebrities, including Gladys Knight and Margaret Cho, have attempted both competitions, however, Riley is the only one to have ever achieved the double feat.

“The Masked Singer” aired a two-hour epic finale on Wednesday night, with Harp walking away with the Season 8 Golden Mask Trophy. She defeated Lambs in the first ever all-female final. Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 8, episodes 11 and 12, of “The Masked Singer,” “Two-Hour Epic Finale,” which aired Nov. 30 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” ended its eighth season on a “Glee”-ful note. Singer and actor Amber Riley, known for playing Mercedes Jones on Fox’s “Glee” and more recently for projects including “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Lifetime’s “Single Black Female,” was revealed as this season’s winner on the Wednesday night finale.
Riley was unmasked as the Harp, beating out the Lambs — who were unmasked as 90s vocal group Wilson Phillips.
“It’s very validating as an artist,” Riley tells Variety about her win. “It can get very discouraging in this industry, especially as a music artist. I’m pretty much a new artist, even though I’ve been in this industry a really long time… to hear all the amazing...

I always wanted to be a Ghostbuster.
Still do, honestly. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, Ghostbusters remains an appealing power fantasy. Unlike most cinematic action heroes of their time, the Ghostbusters were pragmatic capitalists to a fault. Their most formidable foes weren’t Gozer the Destructor or Viggo the Carpathian, but bureaucratic naysayers who threatened to keep them from doing their jobs.
As the beleaguered ghost policemen, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis became overnight mega stars. Behind the camera, director Ivan Reitman redefined the potential for high-budget, star-driven comedies and also became a household name. Yet in the nearly 40 years since its initial release, the actual story of Ghostbusters’ origins as a film, franchise and global phenomenon has been obscure at best.

It was a “Battle of the Semi Finals” on “The Masked Singer” airing Thursday, November 24. Harp, Lambs and Snowstorm had each taken out the competition in their respective rounds and went head-to-head in the first ever three-way Battle Royale. After performing “Thinking of You” by Katy Perry and “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, it was Snowstorm that came up short of reaching the Season 8 finale, revealing herself to be comedian Nikki Glaser.
“It was the first dream that I ever had,” the actress told host Nick Cannon during her unmasked interview. “It was squashed at such a young age and it just became something that was unattainable to me. When this opportunity came up it was so perfect. I think what held me back is that everyone knew I was a comedian, so everyone was like, ‘Don’t sing, no one wants to hear that. It’s like Michael Jordan playing baseball.

Two all new celebrities in disguise took to “The Masked Singer” stage for “Fright Night” on Wednesday, November 23, singing their hearts out and coming for Snowstorm’s crown. After giving a soulful rendition of “Devil With the Blue Dress On” by Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, Sir Bug a Boo advanced to the evening’s Battle Royale, only to be bested by Snowstorm after singing “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell. The entire panel consisting of Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger failed to correctly guess Grammy-winning swinger-songwriter Ray Parker Jr. was behind the mask.

(Warning: Spoilers ahead for Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer”).
It was fright night on Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” but the only thing to be truly afraid of was elimination. And unfortunately, that was the case for Sir Bugaboo. But he wasn’t afraid of being guessed right away (and he certainly wasn’t afraid of no ghosts).
Heading into the episode, fans didn’t get much in the way of clues on Sir Bugaboo’s identity. All they knew was that his costume was very reminiscent of the Cheshire Cat from “Alice in Wonderland,” and his mask-ray revealed a bow tie. As a result, some fans speculated it might be Bill Nye the Science Guy, known for his bow ties in each video. Other suggested it could be “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who has released bow tie collections in the past.
In the end though,...

The studio teased in a CimenaCon sizzle reel in April that a fifth live-action film in the franchise was in the works, following the original, 1989’s Ghostbusters II, the female-led 2016 Ghostbusters reboot and last year’s Reitman-directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Sony today confirmed what the end credits of the 2021 pic — which grossed 197.4 million worldwide — had hinted at: The next sequel...

I long for the days when movies came with songs written about the title, a lost artform likely due to it having been perfected with Ray Parker Jr.'s theme for "Ghostbusters." The phrases "Who you gonna call?" and "I Ain't Afraid of No Ghost" are as synonymous with Ivan Reitman's masterpiece as proton packs and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, with the theme song continuing to be a certifiable banger and an inarguable earworm after almost four decades. In the wake of Reitman's passing, Ray Parker Jr. raised up his memory by going on record to say that Reitman was part...

Dan Aykroyd, who not only played the role of the brilliant Dr. Raymond Stantz in Ghostbusters but was a creative force behind the blockbuster 1980s supernatural comedies, expressed his sympathies today about Ivan Reitman’s death.
“Feeling heartbreak today for Geneviève, Catherine, Caroline, Jason and family. The loss of my friend, collaborator, champion and one of the last great creative talents of the Big Screen Era crumples me,” said Aykroyd in a statement sent to Deadline. “Now on Thursdays who am I gonna call?”
Aykroyd joins former franchise castmate Ernie Hudson, aka Winston Zeddemore, who weighed in to pay tribute to Reitman last night; as well as Paul Feig, who directed the 2016 all-femme reboot; and that movie’s castmembers Carrie Coon and Mckenna Grace.

Ray Parker Jr. had enjoyed a successful career in music when he received a call from his friend Gary LeMel about doing music for a weird film called “Ghostbusters.” Originally a session guitarist in his native Detroit, he recorded and toured with artists like Barry White, Bohannon, the Spinners and Marvin Gaye, and performed on Stevie Wonder’s classic “Talking Book” album and was the guitarist in Wonder’s band on a 1972 tour opening for the Rolling Stones. As a solo artist and with his group Raydio, he enhoyed hits with songs like “You Got the Love,” “Jack and Jill” and “A Woman Needs Love.”
But the success of “Ghostbusters” — which was originally just music for a 20-second segment in the film — went far beyond anything he’d accomplished before, and as he says below, it was all thanks to “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman, who passed away on Sunday. Parker remembers his friend below.

Sunday Am Update: Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife turned in a $16.1M Saturday, which is very close to the amount of cash that Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters grossed on its second day of release, all of this amounting to a $44M opening weekend. That’s great, and the sequel blew up in the heartland, which is a great indicator of families coming out in the holiday week ahead, especially with its dynamite audience exits.
Comscore reports that 41% K-12 schools are off tomorrow and 16% colleges. That grows to 80% K-12 and 61% college on break by Wednesday, before both are 100% off Thursday and Friday. While the debut for the Jason Reitman edition is slightly lighter than Feig’s, which saw a domestic start of $46M; that’s really nothing to wince about.
.Meanwhile, the second wide release of the weekend, Warner Bros.’ Will Smith movie King Richard, was far from a grand slam with $5.7M.

The long-awaited Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives in theaters this week, and the critics have been less than kind.
“This is spirit-of-’84 blockbuster cosplay — a cinematic equivalent of dressing up as Venkman and trying to get every last detail of your costume and D.I.Y. proton pack right, parading your loyalty for the benefit of your peers,” reads a review by Rolling Stone‘s David Fear. “And yet Ghostbusters: Afterlife somehow leaves out the magic that made that Bill Murray-fueled, big-budget genre mash-up so wonderful in the first place.”
