Steve Wright, an iconic BBC radio presenter who used to host Top of the Pops, died Monday. He was 69.
Wright’s family confirmed the death to the BBC in a statement earlier today.
“It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright,” they said. “In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard. Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK’s most enduring and popular radio personalities. As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time.”
BBC Director General Tim Davie led the tributes, calling Wright “the ultimate professional – passionate about the craft of radio and deeply in touch with his listeners.

Willie Geist, one of TV’s early-morning regulars, knew he was in for a dangerously late night.
Though he rises at 4 a.m. on most days, the NBC News and MSNBC anchor has served as master of ceremonies for the annual National Board of Review awards for the past few years. And so there he was, hunkered backstage at New York’s glitzy Cipriani 42nd Street on Jan. 8, socializing with dozens of A-listers who strolled in to hand out trophies. There was Richard Gere one moment, Sophia Bush another, and then Trevor Noah. All the while, Geist knew the event was going to keep him out well past the 9 p.m. curfew he regularly sets for himself. He wouldn’t get the six hours of sleep he requires to manage his daily a.m. duties as co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“Typically insane” is how Geist, 43, describes his schedule...

The Daytime Emmy Award for Best Morning Program was first handed out in 2007, and since then ABC’s “Good Morning America” has been the biggest winner, prevailing five times. Will the show extend its record with a sixth win in 2018? The TV academy has gone back and forth from year to year.
When the award was created 11 years ago two shows tied for the win: “Gma” and NBC’s “Today Show.” They defeated the only other nominee that year, “Live with Regis and Kelly,” which later returned to the talk show categories where it had previously competed. “Gma” won again in 2008 and 2009 before “Today” began a streak of its own, prevailing three times from 2010-2012.
It seemed like “Gma” and “Today” would be indomitable in the category, but then in 2013 “CBS Sunday Morning” earned its first nomination and won. The weekly series, at the time hosted by Charles Osgood, focuses on national and international news,...

Younger‘s Sutton Foster joined Stephen Colbert on Tuesday’s Late Show in a new adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic Broadway musical — now with songs more in tune with the life of the common house pet. It’s, without a doubt, the most ridiculous thing you’ll watch today, but it’s hard not to appreciate Foster’s commitment to the material, especially as her character becomes distracted by a curtain cord, or when she prances across the stage singing about a certain “gift” left for her owner.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes host may have gotten a last minute reprieve with this morning’s news his ratings-anemic primetime program, All In With Chris Hayes had received that cable news network’s only nominations for the 36th edition of the News & Docu Emmy Awards. This morning’s noms announcement comes on the eve of what one source has called an all-hands-on-deck town hall meeting with staffers called by new-ish Chairman of NBC News and MSNBC, Andy Lack, at which it has been forecast/feared initial steps to an MSNBC overhaul will be introduced, as Lack looks to pull that network out of the ratings cellar.
Hayes’ show has been mentioned in many quarters as being vulnerable; in Q2 it clocked 540,000 total viewers, a 12% drop compared to same time last year, and 107,000 news-demo viewers, a drop of 20% and MSNBC’s lowest performing primetime show in the demo for the quarter.

Polly Bergen: Actress on Richard Nixon's 'enemies list' (image: Polly Bergen publicity shot ca. late 1950s) (See previous article: "Polly Bergen Movies: First U.S. Woman President.") As discussed in the previous post, despite its deceptively progressive premise — the first United States woman president as a palpable reality — Kisses for My President, written by veteran Paramount screenwriter Claude Binyon (Search for Beauty, The Gilded Lily) and newcomer Robert G. Kane (whose sole other movie credit was the poorly received Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy Western Villain), was an unabashedly reactionary, "traditional family values" effort. Ironically, Polly Bergen, for her part, was a liberal-minded, politically active Democrat. At around the time Kisses for My President was released, Bergen, along with Gregory Peck, James Garner, and other Hollywood personalities, publicly came out against California's Proposition 14, a 1964 ballot initiative that would have nullified the Rumford Fair Housing Act, thus paving the way for...
