H.P. Lovecraft isn’t exactly known for his sense of humor. The late author, who has the very serious epitaph “I Am Providence” carved into his tombstone, spent his odd, secluded life penning tales of terror for pulp magazines. Lovecraft created the Cthulu mythos, and wrote story after story of mankind coming up against cosmic deities older than time itself. Page after page was devoted to human beings having their very sanity obliterated at the sight of unspeakable forces that were only a thin layer away from our own reality. These were tales of hopelessness, where all were doomed to some perilous demise.
With Lovecraft’s body of bleak work in mind, it’s curious that perhaps the most successful adaptation of one of his stories is also pretty damn funny as well. Stuart Gordon first set out to bring Lovecraft’s Herbert West–Reanimator to the stage with his...

It has just been announced that Re-Animator: The Musical will return for new performances in Hollywood this October with new performers and brand new songs:
““Re-Animator ™ the Musical” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. What should be a medical breakthrough results in hideous monstrosities and ghastly consequences. “I guess he just wasn’t fresh enough,” is West’s constant refrain in his quest for fresh subjects. Graham Skipper, who won a Best New Performer Award at the New York Musical Theater Festival for his crowd-pleasing turn, returns as the demented young genius.
And operatic Jesse Merlin is back as Dr. Carl Hill who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter, only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. But thanks to the glowing re-agent,...

I’m a bit of secret fan of Phantasm II. Whereas the first film was a lucid waking nightmare, Phantasm II hit its hardest like that great sequel, Aliens, in every single way. Plus, a four barreled shotgun is always freaking cool no matter what. Scream Factory sent along specs, cover art and ordering links for the home video release of that film, and the Empire classic From Beyond, released on March 5th, and March 26th respectively.
Phantasm II Collector’s Edition

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the month of January.
Lightning Bug (2004) Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Effects guru Robert Hall’s semi-autobiographical film about a small town teen (Reaper's Bret Harrison) who has aspirations to become a special effects artist. An opportunity to manage the town’s local haunted house is thwarted by his alcoholic stepfather and the staunchly religious views of the surrounding population. The solid supporting cast includes That 70’s Show’s Laura Prepon, Hellraiser’s Ashely Lawrence and Kevin Gage. Written and directed by Hall, it’s an affectionate coming-of-age drama that works in spite of an uneven narrative that falls apart in the final half hour. Hopefully this new extended cut will remedy the scripting problems of the original release.
Special Features include:
* Never-before-released extended cut of the film.
* Making-of Featurette
* Audio commentaries with the writer/director and cast.

From Haxan to last year’s The Devil Inside, religious horror films have been a staple in the genre. Often, films dealing with religion wade in the waters of the threat of a supernatural evil to explain events that could otherwise be attributed to a human force.
Deadly Blessing, a film made after The Hills Have Eyes, and before his groundbreaking A Nightmare on Elm Street, puts Wes Craven in the realm of the potentially supernatural with a serial murderer in a small town dominated by a religious community.
A young couple, Jim and Martha Schmidt (Douglas Barr, Maren Jensen), seem to have the ideal life, until one night when Jim is murdered out in the barn. Seeking refuge, Martha invites two friends, Lana and Vicky (Sharon Stone, Susan Buckner) to visit from the city. No sooner have they arrived, when the Elder of the “Hittite” community (Ernest Borgnine) warns...

One of the many upcoming Scream Factory titles is Wes Craven’s Deadly Blessing. Due out on January 22nd, we now have updated release details and cover art for the Blu-ray/DVD collector’s edition.
Deadly Blessing Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and DVD: When a former member of a religious cult dies in a mysterious accident, his wife Martha (Maren Jensen, Battlestar Gallactica), who now lives alone and close to the cult’s church, begins to fear for her life and the lives of her visiting friends (Susan Buckner, Sharon Stone). Strange and deadly events begin to happen… Could she be the target of the evil cult and its fanatical leader Isaiah (Ernest Borgnine)?
Directed by Wes Craven (Scream, A Nightmare on Elm Street) and starring Jeff East (Pumpkinhead), Lisa Hartman (The 17th Bride) and Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), this consistently terrifying film delivers “unpredictable plot twists” (Time Out) and visual shocks galore.

Movie fans have long loved director Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, renowned for its twisted sense of humor and copious gore. Now, this horror gem is gaining a whole new audience. Gordon has recently taken his 1985 cult classic and, ahem, re-animated it as Re-Animator: The Musical, a tune-filled stage production that's been packing them in since it opened in February.
Playing at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, Re-Animator: The Musical is directed by Gordon and stars George Wendt, Graham Skipper, Chris L. McKenna, Rachel Avery, Cynthia Carle and Jesse Merlin. Originally booked to run through March 27, the show has done so well that its run has been extended through May 29.
With music and lyrics by songwriter Mark Nutter and a book by Gordon, William J. Norris and frequent Gordon collaborator Dennis Paoli, Re-Animator: The Musical might seem like an unlikely entry in the popular trend of converting film into musical theater,...

While co-hosting (with festival head Rachel Belofsky and Jonna Jackson) last week’s Screamfest La mixer at Te’Kila and 504 on Hollywood Boulevard (in attendance were horror movers and shakers John Skipp, F. Javier Gutiérrez, Stephen Goldmann, John Michael Elfers, Drina Durazo and more), I caught up with Re-Animator filmmaker Stuart Gordon in order to discuss his current projects as well as the currently previewing play Re-Animator – The Musical.
Opening on March 5th at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood, CA, the stage musical incarnation of Gordon’s 1985 filmic hit (both of which center around Dr. Herbert West, a medical student obsessed with reanimating the dead) runs Friday through Saturday nights through March 27, and Gordon told us of the play over a cocktail amid the boisterous din, “Audiences seem to really like it, which is great! We’re previewing all weekend, and those nights are already sold out, which is a wonderful thing.

Hold on to your head (hardy, har, har)! Re-Animator - The Musical is upon us. At least, it is for you lucky sons of bitches with some sort of proximity to Los Angeles' Steve Allen Theater.
This would be a cool project on its own, but considering that Stuart Gordon is actually directing this sucker, it's a must see. In 1985 Stuart Gordon directed his first feature film and created a sensation. It was “Re-Animator,” a smashing success based on a horror story by H.P. Lovecraft. The film delivered as many laughs as it did screams, making it a cult classic among horror fans, and won a Critic’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Now Gordon is back with his co-writers Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris and composer/lyricist Mark Nutter to turn “Re-Animator” into a musical for the stage.
Special effects are being done by the same guys...

Director Stuart Gordon is taking his Re-animator film and bringing it to the stage in Re-animator: The Musical. Opening March 5th at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, the play will run Fridays through Sundays until March 27th....
Everyone should know the tale of Dr. Herbert West and his glowing green serum that returns the dead to life but now you'll be able to experience it an a completely different way. Tony Doublin, John Beuchler and John Naulin will be providing the FX and they were all part of the original film. Murk Nutter takes care of the music and lyrics.
Bringing the characters to life will be Graham Skipper, as Herbert West, George Wendt (yeah, from Cheers), Chris L. McKenna, Jesse Merlin, Rachel Avery, Mark Beltzman, Cynthia Carle, Brian Gillespie and Liesel Hanson. The film is a bloody beauty and the musical will be no different as the...

Stuart Gordon is returning to Dr. Herbert West territory. Early last year, we told you Gordon was experimenting with Re-Animator: The Musical which he was aiming to bring to the stage in Los Angeles. Well, the time has arrived. It has a venue. It has a start date. And it's bound to get messy, but not in the Spider-Man: The Musical sort of way. Special effects are being done by the same guys who did them for the 1985 movie: Tony Doublin, John Naulin and John Beuchler. And the blood will flow so freely that the first row will literally be designated as a "splash zone." Needless to say, the show is not for small children. The cast stars George Wendt (Cheers), Chris L. McKenna (King of the Ants), and Jesse Merlin (Star of The Beastly Bombing). Also starring,...

This year just got a whole lot more fun... Stuart Gordon's stage musical version of his horror classic Re-Animator (which Gordon mentioned when I interviewed him a few months ago) will open on March 5th at La's Steve Allen Theater. And Gordon's brought back some of the original film's crew to create it. More after the jump. In addition to Re-Animator screenwriter Dennis Paoli penning the play's book, the musical will also boast special effects by the film's team of Tony Doublin, John Naulin and John Beuchler. The musical will also feature a first-row "splatter zone", similar to that employed by the Evil Dead musical, where audience members can get happily soaked...

Stuart Gordon’s enduringly messy 1985 horror Re-Animator reaches its quarter-century this year. And it’s as campily thrilling as it ever was, says Ryan…
1985. The year Michael J Fox drove into the 50s in Back To The Future, Sylvester Stallone took on the might of communist Russia and won in a single boxing match, and a group of working class kids found pirate treasure in The Goonies.
But there's one, far more antisocial film that leaves its bloody footprint on that year and stands as arguably one of the greatest horror pictures of the decade: Stuart Gordon's gloriously, unapologetically bloody Re-Animator.
Where else can you see a cat with a broken spine return from the dead, or a man choked to death with a corpse's sentient intestines? What other movie of the era had the audacity to splatter the screen with so much gore, nudity and dismemberment, while at...
