Los Angeles, April 17 (Ians) The inaugural American Music Honors awards show – a fundraiser for the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University – was without two very important presenters in attendance – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa.
Bob Santelli, the Archives’ executive director, broke the news that the Springsteens were both diagnosed with Covid-19 just hours after Springsteen took a final bow Friday night at the Prudential Center, wrapping the first part of his 2023 tour with the E Street Band, reports Variety.
“It broke our hearts around 6 a.m. this morning when I got a call that two of the most important people who were supposed to be here, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa, unfortunately came down with Covid-19.
While the news was met with silence in the crowd, host Jon Stewart lightened the mood, joking: “They’re alive. Don’t overreact. You can still see them in concert.

On Saturday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced that Sept. 23 will be declared “Bruce Springsteen Day,” coinciding with the singer’s 74th birthday.
Springsteen was to receive the proclamation in person. But he and his wife Patti Scialfa both have been diagnosed with Covid-19.
Gov. Phil Murphy issued the proclamation at the inaugural American Music Honors event, presented by the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at the Pollak Theatre on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch.
“There’s been 14 administrations in New Jersey since Springsteen started performing,” Murphy said. “I can’t believe it’s taken this long.”
Event host Jon Stewart wanted to put the audience at ease once the news was out.

It’s hard to fathom that Bruce Springsteen’s birthday wasn’t already a holiday in New Jersey, but Governor Phil Murphy has now made it official: September 23rd will forever be known as Bruce Springsteen Day in the Garden State.
Governor Murphy made the proclamation during the first American Music Honors, which was held at the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music in West Long Branch, New Jersey on Saturday.
“Truth be told, I know my place in the hierarchy of New Jersey. After all, I may be the 56th individual to be called ‘governor,’ but there will ever only be just one ‘Boss,’ Murphy said (via Billboard).

There’s been talk of bringing Superior to the big screen for years now, but like Nemesis, so much time has passed that many fans started thinking it would never become a reality. There were rumours about Matthew Vaughn possibly directing at one point, and while we know that the adaptation of Mark Millar and Leinil Yu’s story has been set up at 20th Century Fox, it’s been a long time since anything solid was revealed.
Today, however, it was announced that the writing team of Brandon and Phillip Murphy have been hired to tackle Superior for the studio, while Tarquin Pack and Matthew Vaughn are attached to produce.
For those of you unfamiliar with the property, Superior focuses on a 12 year old boy with multiple sclerosis who is granted one wish by an alien monkey. He chooses to become his favourite comic book movie superhero, Superior, but...

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is a must-see tribute to the show's tremendous musical repertoire...
Doctor Who has been around for over half a century, and a decade on from its triumphant return to TV, it's fair to say that it's never been more popular around the world. Events like the 2013 simulcast and special cinema screenings of The Day Of The Doctor will attest to this and it never seems like we're far off from another reminder of its regenerated global fandom.
Following successful runs in Australia and New Zeleand, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular arena show reiterated that case on its first UK tour last week, drawing crowds across the nation. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and members of the National Chorus of Wales went from Wembley to Glasgow over the course of seven dates, in celebration of composer Murray Gold's spellbinding musical score for the series.

Horror pic The Bringing came to our attention when Drive auteur Nicolas Winding Refn entered talks to helm the project, which was rumored to have been inspired by the bizarre death of a woman at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, what appeared to be a highly promising chiller took a major hit when Refn departed after negotiations reportedly stalled. Now, the studio is pushing ahead with The Bringing, as Deadline reports that Jeremy Lovering is in talks to direct.
Though certainly a less familiar name than Refn, Lovering cut his teeth on the very well-received psychological horror thriller In Fear. He also helmed the first episode of Sherlock‘s third season, titled “The Empty Hearse.” Though In Fear is still on my list of films to see, “The Empty Hearse” was a terrific and fast-paced installment of the BBC series. Sony Pictures evidently saw something it liked in the director,...

Are we getting a remake of Lamberto Bava's Demons? Not quite. Treating the notion of demonic possession like a zombie outbreak isn't anything new, but it isn't something that is used often in film. Exclusive: Material sales slowed the last two weeks while the town was preoccupied with vacations, but stuff is selling again. Yesterday, Dimension Films made a preemptive deal to acquire Transference, a horror pitch from scribes Brandon and Phillip Murphy. The movie is in the spirit of Night Of The Living Dead and World War Z, where residents of a small Bible belt town grapple with the onset of a global outbreak of demonic possession that spreads like virus. Not sure if this fits into Hollywood’s fixation on faith-based fare, but if there are plodding dead guys eating the flesh of slow moving townsfolk like the films that inspired this project, combined with some demonic possession, I am there. The duo most recently sold their horror spec The Bringing to Sony. They are repped by Wme and Mosaic.

Justin Timberlake is in talks to star in a new romantic dramedy called The Last Drop, in which he would play "a charming alcoholic who works as a restaurant critic for New York Magazine." He eventually falls for a young woman and realizes he has to overcome his self-destructive addiction in order to have a real chance with her.
The movie is set to be directed by Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist helmer Peter Sollett, from a Black List script written by Brandon and Phil Murphy. I remember the days I use to think it was ridiculous that Timberlake was being cast in movies, but the guy has turned into quite a good actor, and I've been enjoying the recent films that he's starred in. His most recent movie was Trouble With the Curve in which he starred along side Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams.

In a shocking turn of casting events, Variety reports that strolling troubadour and star of The Love Guru, Justin Timberlake, is in talks to star in a new film that would see the former boy band balladeer playing kind of a jerk. Heavens! The outlet reports that Timberlake is looking to star in Peter Sollett‘s (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) The Last Drop, which would see him as “a charming alcoholic who works as a restaurant critic for New York Magazine” who decides to clean up his wicked ways in order to win the love of a good woman. We will now take bets as to just how irrepressibly awful and jerky Timberlake’s character will be before he gets off the sauce. Timberlake has previously played charming jerks in films like The Social Network, Trouble With the Curve, Alpha Dog, Southland Tales, and (somewhat arguably) Yogi Bear. The...

Justin Timberlake as a charming alcoholic? Not a bad idea after that Trouble With the Curve trouble, so don’t give up on him so easily. Apparently, he’s already in some serious talks to star in the upcoming Peter Sollett‘s project, romantic comedy drama titled The Last Drop.
If negotiations with Timberlake work out, he would come on board to play a charming alcoholic who works as a restaurant critic for New York Magazine.
When he falls for a young woman, he realizes he must overcome his self-destructive addiction in order to have a real chance with her. To bring a sexy back, you know…
Brandon and Phil Murphy are behind the script, Greg Shapiro will produce the project, while Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake will exec produce.
I’m curious to hear who’ll come on board to portray that young woman. Any thoughts?
Amy Adams, perhaps?...

Don't count on 'N Sync to follow The Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees into the '90s boy band reunion show fold. Former lead singer Justin Timberlake is sticking to his guns about becoming a serious actor.
According to Variety, the "Trouble With the Curve" star is now in talks to appear in an upcoming romantic comedy titled "The Last Drop," helmed by "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" director Peter Sollett.
Timberlake, who's kept his rom-com credentials to just "Friends with Benefits" opposite Mila Kunis so far, would portray 30-something Clay, a cavalier food critic with a drinking problem who realizes he'll have to put away the sauce if he wants to have a serious chance with a new lady love interest in the the flick.
The script, co-written by Brandon and Phil Murphy, was featured on the 2011 Black List and got meritorious praise for its sound structure and fresh angle.

While "Trouble With Curve" was manipulative dramatic drivel, the film wasn't without its merits, most notably watching Justin Timberlake prove he's got an easy onscreen charisma that hasn't really been well served in any movie projects he's done thus far outside of "The Social Network" and arguably "Bad Teacher" (though the Coens' forthcoming "Inside Llewyn Davis" will likely change that). But the combination of a Black List script and a quality director could turn things around. Timberlake is in talks to star in "The Last Drop," with Peter Sollett attached to direct. Penned by Brandon and Phil Murphy, the story centers on a fully functioning alcoholic who works at New York magazine, who meets the girl of his dreams and soon discovers that there’s a lot more at stake than love if he doesn’t clean up his act. Um, it sounds almost like a variation on "Smashed" to a certain degree,...

Richard Branson's Virgin Produced label has acquired the film rights to Robert Greenfield’s 2008 book "Exile on Main Street" about the making of the Rolling Stones' album of the same name reports Deadline.
The plan is to turn it into a drama about the professional and personal relationship between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as the band recorded their classic in the south of France in the summer of 1971.
Brandon and Phil Murphy, who are currently penning a Steve McQueen biopic for Sony, are set to write the screenplay.
Branson's Virgin Records released three Stones albums back in the 1990's. Jason Felts, Joshua Maurer and David Stern will produce.

The Sarasota Film Festival, wrapping today, has announced this year's round of awards and SarasotaPatch has the full list. We especially want to congratulate Dan Sallitt, whose The Unspeakable Act has won Best Film in the Independent Visions competition. As Dan tells the Ditmas Park Corner, the film centers on a girl who "has her own vision, which is totally at odds with society's vision of what she's supposed to do with her romantic and sexual urges." And, as we noted last month, The Unspeakable Act will screen in June at New York's BAMcinemaFest.
The Nashville Film Festival is on through Thursday and Sam Smith's designed not only the poster but also the cover of the current Nashville Scene, wherein you'll find a robust collection of capsule reviews.

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.
Simply put, “The Black List” is a collection of the best unproduced screenplays...
