Just below are the 2015 Art Directors Guild nominations and as much as it may seem like Nightcrawler and American Sniper are currently bathing in nominations from all corners, what other contemporary films were going to get nominationsc The period category, however, does consist of a few alternatives that weren't nominated such as Mr. Turner and Fury and I can't help but wonder what the guild would have done in attempting to categorize Noah... Is it a period film or a fantasy filmc I'll leave that one alone... Perhaps one of the more surprisingly absent nominees is Maleficent. You could say there were too many special effects, but then again, isn't that what today's fantasy films primarily arec That said, just below are the nominations for contemporary, period and fantasy films and you can find my current Production Design predictions right here. I see this one as The Grand Budapest Hotel's to lose,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

Jersey Boys
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Written by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice
USA, 2014
American music history has had its fair share of notable moments. The 1950s and 1960s in particular, were an era in which catchy songs and talented performers reigned supreme. One such group was Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. These gifted young men were responsible for hit after hit including but not limited to “Sherry”, “Walk Like a Man”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. A highly entertaining Tony Award-winning Broadway musical was created to detail the rise of The Four Seasons and it ran and continues to run, selling tickets to this day about a decade after its debut. It was only a matter of time until a big Hollywood film adaption would follow and it did. Helmed by veteran filmmaker Clint Eastwood, Jersey Boys is now in theaters and ready to transport you back to...

Warner Brothers Pictures has released 72 images from next month’s J. Edgar.
During his lifetime, J. Edgar Hoover would rise to be the most powerful man in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats both real and perceived, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted, if ever elusive, prize.
Hoover was a man who placed great value on secrets.particularly those of others.and was not afraid to use that information to exert authority over the leading figures in the nation. Understanding that knowledge is power and fear poses opportunity, he used both to gain unprecedented influence and to build a reputation that was both formidable and untouchable.

The annual pubicity stunt that is the Hollywood Film Festival Awards have been announced. The ceremony will take place on October 24th, 2011. No publicity is bad publicity so this is good news for all of the recipients, especially since in most cases they are blocking some direct competition from picking up the very same free publicity. (Not that publicity is free but... oh never mind.) Just for fun I've included the past two years of recipients in italics below this year's honor so you can gauge their general behavior (which is erratic in terms of titles of awards, number of recipients, and whether it has any reflection of general awards season hoopla).

Michelle Williams (right) and Glenn Close will receive, respectively, the Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Actress Award and the Hollywood Career Achievement Award at the Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on October 24. All those "Hollywood" mentions in the above paragraph are not my doing. The Hollywood Film Festival is just that: Hollywood. Glenn Close is a top contender for the 2012 Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in the gender-bending drama Albert Nobbs. Williams may turn out to be a strong contender as well for bringing back to life Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, which will be distributed by Oscarmeister Harvey Weinstein's The Weinstein Company. Other honorees at this year's Hollywood Awards ceremony are Supporting Actor Award winner Christopher Plummer (Beginners), Breakthrough Actor Award winner Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), Hollywood Ensemble Award winner The Help (Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer,...

Hollywoodnews.com: For a 15th consecutive year, the Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards continues their mandate of bridging the gap between emerging filmmakers and the film industry, as well as recognizing excellence in established Hollywood, both in front and behind the camera.
In addition to celebrating accomplishments on screen, the Hollywood Film Awards established the “Hollywood Gives Back(r)” program to expand and continue highlighting and assisting important local and national charities to fund raise. Over the years, the Hollywood Film Awards has contributed to such charities as: The Art of Elysium, Artists For Human Rights; Artists for Peace and Justice; Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; the Enough Project; and the children’s charity Variety SoCal among others.
Further, the Hollywood Film Awards selects individuals to be recipients of their “Hollywood Humanitarian Awards” in recognition of their contribution to the betterment of their communities or society at large.

Over the last week or so I've received several press releases announcing awards that will be handed out at a variety of gala events including the Producers Guild Awards, Gotham Awards and this morning the Hollywood Film Awards. And not so strangely each is featuring a name high on my Oscar predictions lists in a variety of categories.
Over at the PGA awards Steven Spielberg will receive the 2012 David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Motion Pictures, an award said to recognize a producer's outstanding body of work in motion pictures. As far as Spielberg's producing work goes this year, I have a feeling it won't be Transformers: Dark of the Moon or Cowboys & Aliens he's remembered for, but by the time the awards are held on January 21, his latest Oscar contender War Horse will be in theaters, hoping to mount a serious run at Oscar. This, however, is a late to the party award,...

*** Jessica Chastain ("Coriolanus," "The Debt," "The Help," "Take Shelter," and "The Tree of Life") -- Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award (I still stand-by my theory that Chastain is America's answer to Cate Blanchett -- I love this actress! Check out my interview with her for "The Debt")

Hollywoodnews.com: Ever since Summit Entertainment screened Jonathan Levine’s moving comedy “50/50” ahead of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I’ve been holding out hope that Joseph Gordon-Levitt could find his way into the Oscar race for his nuanced, heartfelt performance as a young man diagnosed with cancer.
The entire film brims with outstanding performances, from Seth Rogen playing to his strengths (for a valid reason) to Anjelica Huston in a feature-stealing role as Gordon-Levitt’s supportive mom. And while the Oscar landscape’s still establishing its contenders, Gordon-Levitt has picked up what I hope if the first of several awards still to come.

Hollywoodnews.com: Rarely is there a “lock” during the lengthy Oscar season. Films and performances that appear to be frontrunners in the marathon run toward Oscar nominations falter and fade, while other films that had precious little buzz upon release find waves of support when it matters, and ride that momentum to multiple nominations.
That being said, I’d be surprised in Tate Taylor’s blockbuster summer dramedy, “The Help,” found itself shut out of the Oscar race altogether when nominations are announced early next year. Taylor’s adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel has so many checks in its “Win” column – from boffo box office ($147 million domestically and counting) to outstanding performances by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone – that one could see why it’s the closest thing to an Oscar lock that we’ve seen this season.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a slew of new photos from Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter. Anyone can tell you I was a big, enthusiastic fan of Invictus. (Mostly due to the fact that my son plays Rugby.) THR’s Kurt Honeycutt wrote in his review of Hereafter from the Toronto International Film Festival, “Another strong and unexpected drama from Clint Eastwood.”

We're still not sure just how Dread-worthy Clint Eastwood's supernatural thriller Hereafter is going to be (if at all), but in any event, we're bringing you the film's one-sheet debut just in case!

Week 16 of the wonderful IMDb 250 project is upon us and we are now 80 films into the 250 target and almost a third of the way through the supposed best 250 films of all time.
Week 16 gave me the chance to watch another wonderful selection of films in The Lives of Others, Changeling, The Big Lebowski, Amelie and Inglorious Basterds, all are or contain superb pieces of film making of which three are permanently embedded into my own personal top 10 films of all time (as of today!), in addition I added another new first time film to my collection in The Lives of Others which was another exceptional movie.
No.56 - Das Leben Der Anderlen (The Lives of Others) – Rating 8.4
The best thing about the IMDb250 project is that it’s given us the chance to watch, what are for me, some of the lesser known films that I would never have seen...

Invictus isn’t a word I’d ever heard before and until watching the movie, I had no idea what it was or meant. Well, let me tell you! Invictus is a poem written by William Ernest Henley (1849–1903) which becomes the backbone for reuniting a country when it was on the brink of collapse. Borrowing the poem’s name Clint Eastwood’s new movie takes us through that journey about how a man who was a prisoner becomes the president of his country to lead and unite it in a way that no one thought possible.
Invictus the movie is based on the book by John Carlin (Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation) and stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and the movie begins with stock news bulletins from the 90s which show him being released from prison, and then moving on to showing...

Growing boys need their breakfast. Toasted Corn Flakes it is.
Angelina Jolie and Gattlin Griffith in Changeling
Christine Collins actually makes a joke about eating it before it gets cold. Ha! (Would that Angelina had found a way to bring that sense of humor into the character later on in the movie. sigh) Her son Walter, so independent and capable he won't let her pour it for him, informs her that cereal is supposed to be that way. Kids are so literal. Lighten up, Walter.
I love how absolutely plain the box is but I was curious as to how accurate it was (James J. Murakami and Gary Fettis were Oscar nominated for their 20s/30s based Art Direction). I couldn't find any blue Corn Flakes boxes from the 20s but google searches often let me down. And maybe Christine Collins was buying generic brands. She seemed like the thrifty type.
