March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that the day Kurt Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for Disney, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what are Kurt Russell’s best movies? To celebrate his 73rd birthday, let’s dig into them here.

Over the past three decades, few filmmakers have mastered their craft better than David Fincher. With a fastidious eye for framing and a deep focus on directorial details, Fincher has fashioned some of the most precisely orchestrated cinematic outings since his big screen debut in 1992. Yet, for most avid cinephiles and casual movie fans alike, Fincher will almost always be most associated with Se7en and Fight Club in the 90s and perhaps The Social Network and Gone Girl in the 2010s. If that’s an accurate assessment, then it begs the question – what is David Fincher’s all-time most underrated movie? While the recent release of The Killer is a worthy candidate, and a serious case can be made for Zodiac, The Game continues to be a criminally unheralded psychological thriller that, upon repeat viewings, toys and torments the audience with devious plotting and duplicitous tricks as only Fincher can forge.

Walt Disney Studios has had a pretty abysmal year at the international box office in 2023. Between Ant-Man: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and perhaps most disappointing, The Marvels, the typically successful movie studio has lost an ungodly amount of money by producing overly expensive feature films that failed to resonate among the masses and earn back their financial investments. If the studio isn’t careful and the trend continues, Disney could break another record for the all-time biggest box-office bomb on record.
Speaking of which, what would your answer be if you had to guess Disney’s most notorious financial flop of all time? Well, up until recently, the correct response would have been John Carter, the disastrous 2012 adaptation of Edgar Rice Boroughs’ A Princes of Mars. However, after tallying up the receipts in 2023, Disney’s most infamous box office failure now belongs to The Lone Ranger,...

It's a miracle Peter Berg's "Hancock" exists at all.
The revisionist Will Smith superhero flick began life in 1996 as a spec screenplay by Vy Vincent Ngo called "Tonight, He Comes." The tale of a surly, alcoholic antihero was way ahead of its time; it was a refutation of comic book movies that weren't being made in the absurd volume we're seeing today. It was also startlingly original, which prompted no less an A-lister than Tony Scott to acquire it as a potential directing project. It was one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood, and, for six solid years, it went absolutely nowhere.
"Tonight, He Comes" nearly went before cameras in the early 2000s under the direction of Michael Mann, then nearly came to fruition with the likes of Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino at the helm. Vince Gilligan and John August were brought in to rework the script in...

Movie maker James Cameron was the original architect behind The Terminator franchise. Over the years, he’s passed on his sci-fi series for other filmmakers to inherit. But there was one Terminator film he counted on not succeeding.

Oscar winner Keith Carradine (The Power of the Dog), Emmy nominee Jason Ritter (Raising Dion), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wrenn Schmidt (Nope) have joined the cast of Fox’s upcoming anthology series Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series. The project comes from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and House creator/executive producer David Shore.
Developed by Gordon and co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, Accused is based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology. It opens in a courtroom on the accused, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, Accused depicts how an ordinary person gets caught up in an extraordinary situation, ultimately revealing how one wrong turn leads to another, until it’s too late to turn back.
The series premieres Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 9 p.

DGA leaders have told their members that the guild’s upcoming contract talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers “will not be an ordinary negotiation” and that “if necessary, we are prepared for a fight.”

The DGA’s current contract expires June 30, and no date has been set for the start of negotiations.
The DGA has only struck the industry once in its entire history – back in 1987. That strike only lasted 15 minutes on the West Coast, and for three hours and 15 minutes on the East Coast, before a deal was reached.

The inclusion of Namor (as played by Tenoch Huerta) in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" can mean very different things depending on where you're coming from. If you're well-versed in the history of Marvel Comics, then you're likely aware the Sub-Mariner has been around since the Golden Age of comic books and has gone through varying iterations since his creation in 1939, ranging from a grumpy do-gooder to a hot-tempered antihero. Alternatively, you may only know Namor for being Marvel's "not-Aquaman," a half-human, half-merfolk weirdo with mutant flying powers who's apparently too busy being irascible to put on anything but a pair of green swimming trunks.
Attempts to adapt Namor for the big screen in live-action date back to the late 1990s, at which time Philip Kaufman — the director of films as wildly divergent as the despondent 1978 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" remake and the sexually subversive "Quills" — was in charge of the project.

The production journey of James Cameron’s years-in-the-making “Avatar” sequels has been about as ambitious a saga as the films themselves. But 13 years after “Avatar” became the highest grossing movie of all time, its first sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is finally hitting theaters this December.
While the as-yet unnamed third “Avatar” feature is also wrapped and due in 2024 after being filmed back-to-back with “Way of Water,” Cameron recently revealed that No. 3 may be his last time visiting Pandora. We Americans have a bad habit of taking credit for things we really shouldn't in historical movies that are, supposedly, based on facts. Remember "Argo," the Best Picture Oscar-winning 2012 film where the CIA all but single-handedly saves the day during the Iran Hostage Crisis? In truth, the Canadian ambassador to Iran at the time, Ken Taylor, and Canadian embassy employee John Sheardown (who's not even in the movie) were far more directly involved in the rescue operation than the on-screen version of the story indicates.
Compared to 2000's "U-571," however, "Argo" is a stickler for facts. Directed by Jonathan Mostow ("Breakdown," "Terminator 3: Rise of the...

In the summer of 1997, a season characterized by gargantuan spectacles like The Lost World, Con Air, The Fifth Element, and Batman and Robin, a modest thriller by an unknown young director surprised audiences, critics and probably even its own financiers by becoming a sleeper hit thanks to its classical virtues and relentless determination to put the viewer in the palm of its hand and squeeze. The film, Breakdown, began when Dino de Laurentiis hired low-budget filmmaker Jonathan Mostow to write and direct a new adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “Trucks,” which King had already directed himself as Maximum […]

The fourth “Terminator” movie has a great cast — Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Helena Bonham Carter — and a smart idea, to give all the time-travel a rest and actually set one of these post-apocalyptic thrillers after the apocalypse for a change. Unfortunately, director McG is more interested in chaotic action than in the story, the new revelations about the universe are groan-inducing, and Sam Worthington’s forgettable protagonist, a survivor with a secret, takes valuable screen time away from everyone and everything else.

After four disappointing sequels in a row, the Terminator franchise should probably be retired for good. The law of diminishing returns set in a long time ago, and in retrospect Jonathan Mostow’s Rise of the Machines was the closest we got to recapturing the magic of James Cameron’s classic two originals.
The third installment ended with Judgement Day proving itself to be inevitable, but none of the following trio of reboots managed to deliver on the promises they’d made. In the space of ten years we were told that Salvation, Genisys and Dark Fate would be the movie the fans had always wanted to see, marking the first chapter of an all-new Terminator trilogy that would restore the flagging series to former glories.
Obviously that didn’t happen, and Dark Fate was one of the 2019’s biggest bombs, while star Mackenzie Davis even admitted people were probably...

The Terminator franchise became so obsessed with rebooting itself over and over again until it stumbled on a movie successful enough to launch a new trilogy that Jonathan Mostow’s Rise of the Machines has arguably become the most overlooked entry in the entire series. It obviously can’t hold a candle to James Cameron’s classic originals, but as a straightforward blockbuster action movie, it ticks all the right boxes.
It also makes some bold storytelling choices, from confirming that Sarah Connor died offscreen to a third act that pulled the rug from underneath audiences and revealed in an incredibly downbeat ending that Judgment Day was indeed inevitable. The studio had wanted to continue the series for a while, but James Cameron had absolutely no interest in doing so and Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to return unless the filmmaker was involved. In terms of messy timelines, the Terminator franchise has got to be right up there with the X-Men series when it comes to a mythology that loves nothing more than to tie itself in knots with every subsequent installment.
Admittedly, James Cameron’s classic opening two movies and Jonathan Mostow’s Rise of the Machines followed a relatively linear story where Kyle Reese has to save Sarah Connor to ensure her son is born, before the T-800 has to save both of them in order to stop Judgment Day, then has to return once more to save John and Katherine Brewster so that their children can live because Judgment Day was actually inevitable all along. But after that, things get confusing.
Of course, the problem can largely be attributed to Salvation, Genisys and Dark Fate all attempting to launch a brand new trilogy, and all falling at the first hurdle.

Jonathan Mostow is on board to write and direct a biopic about American businessman and humanitarian Chris Catrambone, founder of the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (Moas). Established in 2013, Moas has provided humanitarian aid and services to the most vulnerable people around the world, reaching hundreds of thousands to date. Catrambone’s self-financed efforts have resulted in the rescue of 40,000 refugees at sea.
“Chris Catrambone is living proof of how one person’s passion can save lives,” said Mostow. “When he saw the world standing idle as scores of refugees drowned in the Mediterranean, he took it upon himself to do something. I’m honored to be able to tell his story.”
The project marks Mostow’s return to film since 2017’s The Hunter’s Prayer, starring Sam Worthington. He’s also no stranger to filming on water, having directed the WW2 submarine thriller U-571 with Matthew McConaughey and the pilot for TNT’s The Last Ship.

Remember the movie Hancock? It’s a Will Smith action flick from 2008 that for whatever reason, is largely forgotten not just in his filmography, but the superhero genre as whole. It’s especially curious as to why no one talks about it considering the movie was a huge hit at the box office ($624 million worldwide) and has a lot of talent involved including Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman and director Peter Berg.
No sequel ever materialized, but Theron has now said she’s down to return to that world if they ever decide to make another one. While promoting her new Netflix film The Old Guard, she talked about playing another immortal until the conversation shifted to a possible Hancock sequel, with the actress saying:
“You know, for a while we [talked about a sequel],” Theron says. “I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We’ll be superheroes with our walkers,...

Thomas Schlamme was re-elected president of the Directors Guild of America by acclamation today by the delegates to the guild’s biennial convention. The Emmy-winning West Wing director was first elected in 2017.
“It is my honor to once again accept the position of President of the Directors Guild of America,” he said. “It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. We’re in a time of immense change, and the next few years will be critical for the DGA and for our industry. I am focused and ready to lead us through our next negotiations, and to ensure that the creative and economic rights of directors and their teams are protected for years to come. And I am fortunate that serving alongside me is a dedicated, experienced team of fellow officers elected to represent our members.”

The DGA is already gearing up for next year’s film and TV contract negotiations. “This is the most important thing we do as a guild,” DGA president Thomas Schlamme said at the guild’s recent annual membership meeting. “It’s where we exert our collective bargaining strength and leverage on this business. While our major contracts expire on June 30, 2020, just over a year from now, we’ve been ramping up our preparations.”
“Right now, it’s far too early in the process to make definitive statements about our negotiating priorities,” Schlamme said at the meeting. “But rest assured, we will be as forceful as we always are in ensuring that compensation, working conditions, residuals, pension and health, creative rights and inclusion are addressed.”
Directors Jon Avnet and Todd Holland will co-chair the guild’s negotiating committee, which will be made up of nearly 80 members from all the guild’s various job categories.

The longest time to pass between Terminator movies was twelve years, from James Cameron's action masterpiece T2 in 1991 to Jonathan Mostow's shoddy Rise of the Machines in 2003. Since then, even though they continually struggle to find and resituate their stories and main characters, it's been five to six years from film to film, taking us from Salvation to Genisys and to now, as of this fall, we'll have Dark Fate. Which, it must be said, finally brings the great Linda Hamilton and her iconic Sarah Connor character back for the first time since 1991.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. David Fincher's The Game (1997) is showing March 23 – April 22, 2019 in many countries around the world.“...from any given body of fictional text, nothing necessarily follows, and anything plausibly may.”—William H. Gass, “The Concept of Character in Fiction”What is The Game? “The eternal question,” an unnamed character intones, when he is asked this by its newest player, Nicholas van Orton (Michael Douglas), a middle-aged millionaire unaccustomed to befuddlement. Mainstream critics, who similarly dislike being perplexed, didn’t quite know what to make of the film when it premiered in 1997: responses were tepid and noncommittal, and, despite its $100 million box office draw, it has long been considered a minor work in David Fincher’s oeuvre, ensconced between the seminal Se7en (1995) and the belatedly-loved Fight Club (1999). It is a film that is at once subtle and silly, whose perfunctory...

Tom Cruise has stepped up the fight against motion smoothing.
The star of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” was joined by the movie’s director, Chris McQuarrie, in a video posted Tuesday explaining what motion smoothing on high-definition TVs is, and why movie fans should turn it off.
Motion smoothing, aka “the soap opera effect” or video interpolation, is designed to reduce blur in high-motion video, like live sports. HDTVs that have the feature insert frames that didn’t exist in the source video to smooth out the action.
“The unfortunate side effect is that it makes most movies look like they were shot on high-speed video, rather than on film,” Cruise explained in the video.
McQuarrie added, “If you own a modern high-definition television, there’s a good chance you’re not watching movies the way the filmmakers intended.” The message was timed to the release of Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” on Blu-ray on Tuesday.

Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson are joining the fight to correct television settings and preserve filmmakers’ original visions for how their movies should look. An email sent to members of the Directors Guild of America (via /Film) notified them that the directors were taking action by reaching out to television manufacturers to ensure audiences can see movies without settings that drastically alter the original look of movies.
“Many of you have seen your work appear on television screens looking different from the way you actually finished it,” the email reads. “Modern televisions have extraordinary technical capabilities, and it is important that we harness these new technologies to ensure that the home viewer sees our work presented as closely as possible to our original creative intentions.”

Long known to Hollywood for its water tanks, generous incentives and wide-ranging architecture, the Mediterranean island nation of Malta is making an effort to lure more international production. Whether it will succeed remains to be seen.
This year started well, with shoots of the third season of USA’s “Queen of the South,” National Geographic’s “Genius: Picasso” and Sky Germany’s “Das Boot.”
New film commissioner Johann Grech, who was appointed last December, has announced plans for a sorely needed revamp of studio space, which has yet to materialize. When it does, it could be the clincher that Malta needs to establish itself as a haven for long-running productions.
Grech, the Maltese government’s former head of marketing, says he’s not only working on adding soundstages but also busy “building a rapport with producers in China and India” to expand the tiny country’s customer base. Bollywood blockbuster “Thugs of Hindostan,...

Whether or not Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is still the worst installment in the franchise remains a point of debate, but most sci-fi fans can agree that it marked the moment in this long-running series when the Terminator films ceased to be essential viewing.
With that in mind, seeing how Logan Marshall-Green’s career is going pretty swimmingly right now – between last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and this year’s acclaimed action-horror movie Upgrade – it might be tempting to say that the actor made a smart move when he turned down the role of John Connor in the 2003 blockbuster. But as a student who had yet to make a name for himself in the film industry, it must’ve seemed like a pretty bold choice at the time for him to opt to continue his studies over taking the lead in a franchise that, back then, had yielded...

With sci-fi actioners Surrogates and Terminator 3 already under his belt, director Jonathan Mostow should have no trouble handling a real-world Euro-thriller like The Hunter’s Prayer, yet control of the narrative appears to rapidly slip from his grasp as the movie’s implausibilities mount. What should be a reliably entertaining, if not especially original, replication of well-worn crime-thriller conventions instead turns into an enervating slog. Audiences seeking mindless diversion are more likely to discover The Hunter’s Prayer on VOD than in theaters, where it doesn’t have, well, a prayer of lasting past opening weekend.

The Terminator, released in 1984, was a considerable hit; when Carolco spent millions on buying the property, and around $100m on making T2, it was betting that Cameron could turn a low-budget sci-fi thriller with horror overtones into a major summer blockbuster.

Judging by this preview, I wouldn’t suggest you book space in your calendar for its June 9th release, as it looks like a dreary collage of bad car chases and iffy gunfights. Apparently, it’s about a hitman helping a young girl to avenge the death of her family. That said hitman is played by Sam Worthington – all gritted teeth and overly serious hairdo – doesn’t exactly scream excellence. And frankly, the film being directed by Jonathan Mostow, the man responsible for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (to its credit, it’s the third...

You probably got the gist of what this is about from the trailer, but here's the official synopsis to fill in the blanks...
This high octane thriller focuses on Lucas, (Sam Worthington), a solitary assassin, hired to kill a young woman, Ella, (Odeya Rush). When he can't bring himself to pull the trigger the plan falls apart, setting in motion a twisted game of cat and mouse. Now both are marked for death and forced to form an uneasy alliance. The film is being directed by Terminator 3 director Jonathan Mostow, and looks pretty damn cool! Check out the...

"There are people out there... they're hunting you." An official trailer has arrived for an action thriller film titled The Hunter's Prayer, or just Hunter's Prayer for short, about a skilled assassin who becomes a protector instead. The film stars Sam Worthington as an assassin who has always lived a life of his own, without any attachments. When he's hired to kill a young woman, at the last minute he chooses to watch over her instead, and then joins with her to get revenge on the people responsible for brutally murdering her family. The cast includes Odeya Rush, Martin Compston, Amy Landecker, Veronica Echegui, and Allen Leech. Not surprisingly, this looks blatantly mediocre, with plenty of assassin action but nothing we haven't seen many times before. I'm sure this will be forgotten quickly, but maybe a few of you will catch it. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jonathan Mostow's The Hunter's Prayer,...
