Joe Morgan, the Cincinnati Reds’ Hall of Fame second baseman who powered the team’s legendary Big Red Machine era of the 1970s before co-anchoring with Jon Miller ESPN’s must-watch Sunday Night Baseball for 21 seasons, died Sunday at his home in Danville, CA. He was 77.
A family spokesperson the cause of death was nonspecified polyneuropathy. He’d had a bone-marrow transplant in 2016.
Nicknamed Little Joe (he stood 5-foot-7), Morgan, along with Reds teammates Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, was a key force in the team’s World Series championships in 1975 and 1976; he was named National League Most Valuable Player both of those seasons.
A 10-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, Morgan also was a stolen-base specialist, swiping 40 or more bags in nine of his 22 seasons. He also was known for his habit of cocking his left elbow up and down as he awaited a pitch.

Gloria Vanderbilt, artist, author, actress, fashion designer, heiress and the mother of CNN’s Anderson Cooper, has died. She died Monday morning at her New York City home, surrounded by family and friends, CNN announced. She was 95.
“Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms,” Cooper said in a statement. “She was a painter, a writer, and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend. She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they’d tell you, she was the youngest person they knew, the coolest, and most modern.”
Vanderbilt was born in in Manhattan, the only child of railroad heir Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and his second wife, Gloria Morgan.
Vanderbilt began her professional career as an actress, but she became known during the 1930s as the subject of a high-profile child custody trial in which her mother,...

Anderson Cooper didn't publicly come out as gay until 2012, but it was decades earlier that he had the conversation with his mother Gloria Vanderbilt - a discussion he "regretted" for years. Cooper, now 48, recounted opening up about his sexuality to Vanderbilt, 92, in a recent interview with People and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle. The CNN anchor said that his grandmother Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt being "accused" of being a lesbian during the 1930s had a profound impact on Vanderbilt's understanding of same-sex relationships. "I had sort of vaguely heard that my grandmother was a lesbian and had been accused of...

Anderson Cooper has become famous the world-over for his hard-hitting reporting and tough questions on CNN. But his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, has been famous since she was born.
Her father, Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt, was from one of the richest families in U.S. history. Her great-grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt built the New York Central Railroad. After Reginald married his second wife, Gloria Morgan, the couple welcomed Gloria Vanderbilt in 1924.
Her birth made headlines. But just 18 months later, her father died of cirrhosis of the liver and she was left in the care of her 19-year-old mother.
"She wanted to have fun.
