Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

It's been 24 years since Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" brought the glory and gore of ancient Rome to gorgeous life, and now the prolific director has returned to the tale with "Gladiator 2." Set 20-30 years after the events of the first film, "Gladiator 2" will star Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla. Though Maximus (Russell Crowe) died along with Lucius's vicious uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of "Gladiator," both Lucilla and Lucius survived.
The movie will also star Denzel Washington as an arms dealer who has a stable of gladiators and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, along with Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Fred Hechinger, and Derek Jacobi. That's quite a packed cast, although with a reportedly massive budget of more than $300 million, "Gladiator 2" could prove to be a disaster financially while paying off well for movie-goers who want to see some high-end historical fiction.

Given the film’s torturous production, Gladiator 2 is undoubtedly over budget. But just how much is a point of contention, it seems.
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 has suffered quite a few issues throughout its production. Crew members were injured on set and hospitalised. The film was shut down due to the strikes, costing the production an estimated $600,000 per week as the industry shutdown lasted for months on end. PETA sent a letter to Scott expressing concern about the way horses and monkeys were being treated on set. One of the film’s stars, Barry Keoghan, left on the eve of production due to scheduling issues as well.
The film is now in the can, but at what cost? The labour stoppages alone were slated to have cost the film around $10m, but that doesn’t account for the film’s budget almost doubling, from an expected $165m to almost $310m.

Paramount could throw Ridley Scott to the lions if Gladiator 2 fails to perform like gangbusters at the box office. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals the ballooning cost of production on the anticipated sequel, with insiders close to the project saying the film budgeted at $165 million is closer to $310 million. Let that amount sink in for a moment.
Per THR’s sources, the net cost of the 49-day shoot was under $250 million. “It’s a runaway,” says one source. “It’s not being managed.” How did this happen? The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes did not help. Production for Gladiator 2 shut down in July because of the negotiations, costing the studio $600,000 a week, roughly $10 million. Scott resumed filming in December, though some say he continued to capture footage using extras during the strikes.
Some wonder if the Gladiator 2 set was cursed. In June, six crewmembers sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries.

A pact between Apple Original Films, A24, Spike Lee, and Denzel Washington is making noise this Thursday with news about a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low. Lee and Washington are old friends, of course, with the duo’s fourth collaboration being for 2006’s Inside Man.
In Kurosawa’s High and Low, an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Details about Lee’s remake are scarce, though we know it will be an English-language reimagining of the original—details about how and if the plot will differ from Kurosawa’s classic crime drama remains a mystery.
Alan Fox and Lee wrote the screenplay for the High and Low remake, with A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures handling development. Production kicks off in March, with Todd Black producing for...

Ridley Scott is likely to be pretty happy that filming on Gladiator 2 has wrapped, following an ‘eventful’ shoot.
Bless Ridley Scott. The man is in his 80s and is making films with the sort of energy that someone half his age would struggle to match. Even still, the production of Gladiator 2 must have tested even his legendary levels of endurance. It’s all over now, though, reports World of Reel, with Scott and star Paul Mescal taking to social media to celebrate the production coming to a close.
Let’s recap on just how tricky a shoot it was for Scott and his collaborators. Back in the summer, four crew were hospitalised when a filming sequence went wrong. That alone would make things difficult, but that came on the heels of Barry Keoghan leaving on the eve of production due to a scheduling conflict. Losing an actor of...

It’s time to get back to work! The end of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike is finally here, and production for some of Hollywood’s most anticipated films can resume! With writers, actors, crew members, and more returning to Tinseltown, cinephiles can expect release date shuffles, reshoots, and creative shake-ups for projects across the entertainment spectrum. For example, Riley Scott’s Gladiator 2 will return to production when set builders repair the project’s elaborate filming environments.

After a long pause, ‘Gladiator 2’ is finally set to resume its journey back to the big screen. The highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 blockbuster, ‘Gladiator,’ faced a major setback due to a strike by the SAG-AFTRA. However, with the strike now concluded, the film is ready to spring back into action.
Production for ‘Gladiator 2’ originally kicked off in June 2023, with expectations to wrap up in four months. But the unexpected strike starting July 14, 2023, brought everything to a standstill. The halt left the magnificent sets in Malta, including a life-sized Coliseum, in need of significant refurbishment.
Ridley Scott, renowned for directing the original ‘Gladiator,’ is back in command for this sequel. The cast is a vibrant mix of returning stars and exciting new talent. Among those reprising their roles are Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, and Connie Nielsen. The film also welcomes fresh faces, including Paul Mescal as Lucius,...

Although the production of Gladiator 2 is currently on pause until the SAG-AFTRA strike concludes, the movie is set to receive quite a bit of money from the Malta Film Commission. According to the Times of Malta, Gladiator 2 will collect a €46.7 million rebate, which converts to over $50 million in U.S. dollars.
The Malta Film Commission promises production companies up to 40% cash back if they film in Malta. Not a bad deal, but this one seems to benefit Gladiator 2 more than the country of Malta. Although Gladiator 2 is filming in Malta, the production has brought in crew members and actors from other countries, as well as equipment, props, costumes, and machinery. The report notes that industry insiders say “only a fraction of the film’s entire spend eventually ends up working its way into the Maltese economy.” The Gladiator 2 rebate has broken the record as...

Are you not entertained? Because Ridley Scott is returning to his place of highest success, the film that has won more awards than any other he has made in his over four-decade-long career. "Gladiator" picked up five Oscars the year after its release, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, and it has since been regarded as one of the best movies of its genre and the 2000s. Incidentally, a follow-up has been in the making, in some form or another, for over two decades now.
But the shape of the as-yet-untitled "Gladiator 2" has changed considerably. As it now stands, the sequel is going to follow Lucius Verus, the young boy from "Gladiator" who inadvertently told his conniving, regicidal uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) of the plot to topple him. Though Lucius bore the name of his alleged real-life co-emperor father, he will be revealed as the son...

Though Ridley Scott has been full steam ahead on casting for his Gladiator sequel, he's had to make one change — while Barry Keoghan had been making a deal to play the antagonist, Emperor Geta, word arrives via Deadline that a schedule clash means he's had to drop out of the movie. But The White Lotus' Fred Hechinger is now in talks to replace him.
And Hechinger is just the latest addition to an already hefty cast, joining at the same time as Moon Knight's May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi (reprising his role as Gracchus), Peter Mensah and Matt Lucas.

Ridley Scott has been filling out the cast of Gladiator 2 as Deadline has the scoop on a number of new additions. Liam McIntyre as Spartacus
Starz is ready to return to the world of gladiators with a new chapter in the Spartacus franchise. Spartacus series creator Steven S. DeKnight is also diving back into ancient Rome as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the new series.
“It’s such an incredible honor to be invited to return to the world of Spartacus and to be met with unbridled creative support from my colleagues at Starz and Lionsgate,” said Steven S. DeKnight. “Together we are crafting something truly unique and unusual for the next chapter in this epic story.”
DeKnight took to Twitter to confirm he’s currently writing the pilot.
Spartacus aired for four seasons on the network, kicking off in 2010 with Spartacus: Blood and Sand starring Andy Whitfield in the title role. Tragically, Whitfield passed away in September 2011 of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Liam McIntyre took over the role beginning in season two.

Everyone, get out your swords and sandals because we're heading back to the arena! Starz has just announced that it is currently developing a new "Spartacus" series! Forgive the excessive use of exclamation points, but I loved every minute of this show from the first moment to the last, including the prequel "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena."
The first season of the series was entitled "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and debuted in 2010. Before the second season, star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leading to the prequel to give him time to recover. Sadly, he passed away, and the role was recast with Liam McIntyre for season 2, "Spartacus: Vengeance" and season 3, "Spartacus: War of the Damned."
The show was, as our title says, very sexy. Still, it was also a compelling drama about the titular Thracian gladiator who led a revolt of enslaved people against the Roman empire.

Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight is expanding the franchise once again with a new series currently in development at Starz. DeKnight will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the as-yet-untitled project.
The next chapter will explore uncharted territory and new journeys of the original series’ iconic characters. In the aftermath of the defeat of Spartacus and his rebel army in the series finale, the new drama will depict a new tale of treachery, deceit, and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.

Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.
“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.
In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

Stop me if you've heard this one. A biotech company that also happens to be a devil-worshipping cult has been cloning famous historical figures and auctioning them off to wealthy bidders. The clones are still kids and in some cases babies, which means for a huge amount of money, someone can get their very own toddler Stravinsky or baby Michelangelo. Kind of like "Clone High," but evil.
But here's the thing: cloning these historical geniuses isn't the cult's endgame. They plan on stealing the Shroud of Turin and using the blood stains on the supposedly holy artifact to clone Jesus Christ himself. But wait, there's more. Not only does the cult want to clone Jesus — they want to use the clone baby as the host for Lucifer himself. Yes, Satan is real, and so are angels, and the battle between Heaven and Hell is about to come to Earth!

Plot: A cult steals the Shroud of Turin for wicked purposes.
Review: The Devil Conspiracy almost feels like someone saw Rosemary’s Baby and said “I can make that considerably more European.” The idea of a cult coming together to ensure the birth of the anti-christ isn’t exactly a groundbreaking concept. But they flip that on its head in an interesting way and I can’t say enough good things about how they pull it off. The film constantly knows its place, never trying to do too much. This is a cheese-fest with a fresh coat of paint. And that’s not really a bad thing.
The film is brimming with religion but even as a non-religious man, I never felt overwhelmed by it. They take every aspect in such a “Hollywood” way that even the most devout Atheist should be able to watch with ease. In fact, it actually...

The plot involves a biotech company creating a technique to clone the greatest minds and figures from history. However, the company is run by a cabal of Satanists whose ultimate goal is to resurrect Lucifer himself. They plan to do this by offering up Jesus once they've cloned him from a sample of his DNA found on his shroud. Let the religious battles ensue. The film stars Alice Orr-Ewing, Joe Doyle, Eveline Hall, Peter Mensah, Joe Anderson, Brian Caspe, and James Faulkner. This looks so hyper-stylized, with so many epic...

The biggest thing that Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins gets right is the casting of Henry Golding as the titular, iconic masked ninja. Not only is it nice to see the character played by an Asian actor (Snake Eyes has up to this point only been portrayed as a white man), but the Malaysian-English Crazy Rich Asians star does a fine job at kicking the living shit out of countless baddies, as well as giving the up-til-now silent character a voice that fans can get behind. And director Robert Schwentke treats the material seriously while still remembering to have fun along the way.
The movie opens with Snake Eyes as a boy, long before he becomes the wordless warrior fans know and love. He and his dad are on vacation at their family cabin when a group of militarized mercenaries led by a scraggly super-goon captures his father and forces...

“Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” is probably about as good a movie as you’re going to get that has the words “G.I. Joe” in the title. Maybe that’s because it seems to have very little to do with anyone’s conventional idea of G.I. Joe. It’s not a square-jawed, mildly jingoistic heavy-weapons combat orgy, like “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” (2009) or “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” (2013), the previous two installments in the Hasbro-inspired action franchise. It is, rather, a darkly atmospheric, sleekly scissor-limbed ninja combat orgy — a tale of vengeance and nobility and scheming set in Tokyo, where the title character (Henry Golding), a moody drifter who saw his father killed by shadowy forces, joins the Arashikage clan, a 600-year-old ninja dynasty, but only because he’s on an undercover mission of sabotage.
