There are three types of people in the world: "Garfield" people, "Calvin and Hobbes" people, and "Peanuts" people. As a practicing worshipper of The Great Pumpkin and the human result of what happens when Lucy van Pelt and Peppermint Patty go through the Brundlefly machine, I am firmly in the latter camp. There's no such thing as a bad "Peanuts" movie, in my opinion, only films that are special to a smaller number of fans.
The characters created by Charles M. Schulz have been entertaining generations for over 75 years, and there's no sign of stopping. Apple won the rights to much of the "Peanuts" library in the streaming wars, releasing the hybrid "Peanuts" special/Schulz documentary "Who Are You, Charlie Brown?" as well as two series, "Snoopy in Space" and "The Snoopy Show." Now, Apple TV+ is developing its first "Peanuts" original feature, bringing Charlie Brown and the gang to the Big City.

The grimy world of gangsters is to the fore in Mike Hodges' feature debut, the tale of a man on a mission of vengeance in Newcastle. Michael Caine feels as sharp and raw as a jagged knife edge in the role of enforcer Jack Carter, who is determined to get to the bottom of his brother's death. Unashamedly brutal in its approach to violence - including the memorable dispatching of Corrie regular Bryan Mosley - matched with snappy dialogue and Caine's dry delivery, this is gangland with all the grit that offers a time capsule of a Seventies underworld long paved over.

Canadian comedian Jim Carrey has compiled a wildly varied filmography during a career that has spanned nearly four decades, from mid-1980s comedies like Once Bitten and Peggy Sue Got Married to his breakout role as pet detective Ace Ventura in a pair of mid-1990s comedies to more dramatic parts in mid-2000s films like The Number 23 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
He’s played comic book characters Edward “The Riddler” Nygma, Stanley “The Mask” Ipkiss, and Sal “Colonel Stars & Stripes” Bertolinni, and animated characters Ebenezer Scrooge and Horton the Elephant. Tripper Clancy has been set to rewrite “High Five” for Amazon Studios, sources tell Variety.
Ross Katz and Jamie Lee Curtis are producing.
The pic tells the true story of Glenn Burke – inventor of the high five – and the first major league baseball player to be publicly outed as gay. Burke played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics and though his career only spanned four seasons (1976-79), he is still the only player to come out to teammates and team owners during his professional career and the first to publicly acknowledge it, famously stating, “They can’t ever say now that a gay man can’t play in the majors, because I’m a gay man and I made it.” Burke died in 1995 of complications from AIDS.

The Peanuts Movie was a hit with both critics and audiences a few months ago. The film charmed movie-goers with the classic characters and an uplifting story that couldn.t help but make you smile. And, now, we know that the movie used one very special scene to make sure we remembered Peanuts history. It was a natural opportunity to resurrect some of the classic dance moves and also add new ones. We went back and studied what Bill Melendez [the animator who directed the Christmas special and provided the voices of Snoopy and Woodstock] had done and replicated that. They were so charming and entertaining. And we wanted to build on the tradition, so we added a handful of new dances, but in the same spirit.that simplistic, repetitive style of movement. The director of The Peanuts Movie, Steve Martino, relayed this information to The Hollywood Reporter. The scene ...

The makers of The Peanuts Movie went against the grain of 3D animation to produce a film that looks deceptively simple…
“I’ve never worked so hard to make things look so simple” was the catchphrase of Blue Sky Studios’ Harald Kraut on The Peanuts Movie. “It looks simple on screen,” he explains, “but it wasn’t simple to get there because of the rules we established.”
Those rules, as descibed here, were established to try to evoke the look and feel of Charles Schulz’s 2D, hand-drawn comic strips on the big screen. Broadly speaking, they involved taking a highly sophisticated 3D animation system and stopping it from doing everything it’s good at; sweeping camera movements, photo-real textures, creating the illusion of depth... All of that went out of the window in the service of staying faithful to Schulz’s original strips.

From shorts to features hailing fro all over the world, 2015 was yet another banner year in the world of animation. To help dive deeper in the process behind some of the best offerings, we have a one-hour THR roundtable featuring Pete Docter (Inside Out), Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa), Richard Starzak (Shaun the Sheep Movie), Steve Martino (The Peanuts Movie), Roger Allers (The Prophet), and Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur).
In the chat, they discuss the painstakingly detailed process behind each of their films, with Starzak noting his process. “I blindly said I wanted to make a modern-day silent movie [with Shaun the Sheep],” he says. “And even my producers said, ‘I think that’s crazy. I don’t think it’s going to work.’ And to be honest, I didn’t think it was going to work either. I didn’t fully believe it was going to work. That was the sort of fear that I like.

Here’s how The Peanuts Movie creators tried to honour the look and feel of Charles ‘Sparky’ Schulz’s original comic strips…
On a desk in a Santa Rosa office sits a red and gold box measuring 10x8cm. It dates from the 1940s, is one of only three such boxes in existence, and contains around a hundred of what comic book artist and creative director of Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, Paige Braddock, calls “the holy grail of pen nibs”. These are the nibs used by Charles 'Sparky' Schulz to draw over 17,000 Peanuts comic strips.
When the R. Esterbrook Company stopped manufacturing Charles Schulz’s preferred 914 pen nibs, he bought up the remaining stock. Three boxes are all that remain; one on display at the Schulz Museum adjacent to his former studio, one kept in the studio safe, and the one we’re shown by Braddock,...

I had the opportunity to speak with director Steve Martino about a film that is out in theaters, The Peanuts Movie, the first feature-length outing for Charles Schulz’s iconic characters. In 2008, Martino was one of the duo who directed Blue Sky Studios’ Horton Hears A Who!, a theatrical CGI adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ picture book. And in 2012 he also co-directed Ice Age: Continental Drift.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved "Peanuts" gang make their big-screen debut, like they've never been seen before, in state of the art 3D animation. Charlie Brown, the world's most beloved underdog, embarks upon an epic and heroic quest, while his best pal, the lovable beagle Snoopy, takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis, the Red Baron.
Here is what Martino had to say about the film. And below is our exclusive image from the film.

When any beloved property is adapted in a new medium for the big screen there is bound to be a slew of anxiety that comes along with it. The odds of someone taking something you know by heart and love on a soul-deep level and disrespecting it in the name of commerce are stacked astronomically against you. That goes double for a film based on a comic involving children as characters and an appealingly dark existential streak. With children as characters, the film will invariably be geared towards children, and so one would be forgiven for believing that the soul of the story would be altered to appeal to them as well.

“The Peanuts Movie” successfully took a beloved comic strip from the 1950s and adapted it to the big screen, for a new generation to enjoy along with those who grew up with Charlie Brown. Critics are raving about Steve Martino’s rebooted childhood classic, saying it “remains almost completely true to its original values,” while being “a sweet little gift for fans of the long-running comic strip.” And TheWrap’s film critic Alonso Duralde says the movie will be fit for all ages, not just children: “‘Peanuts’ on the page had an adult sensibility that children could also enjoy, but the animated versions have.

Purists will likely balk at the revisions made to Charles Schulz’s characters in “The Peanuts Movie” — specifically, the fact that Charlie Brown’s air of existential insecurity and anxiety has been replaced with a far more palatable, kid-friendly brand of self-doubt. That Steve Martino’s film also wastes considerable time on imaginary aerial dogfights (har har) between Snoopy and his fictional nemesis The Red Baron — skirmishes staged like those found in any number of modern blockbusters — simply makes it more difficult to ignore how this contemporary big-screen outing for Schulz’s iconic adolescents reconfigures its source material’s tone. Brighter, cheerier, and bouncier than the comic strips and TV specials that made them household names, Charlie and company’s animated adventure (from "Ice Age" producers Blue Sky Studios) is something of a betrayal, to be sure. Which doesn’t, however, prevent it from also being a likably...

Chicago – They didn’t screw it up, and that is good. Eschewing modern conventions or typical animation pop culture jokes, “The Peanuts Movie” honors its source (Charlie Brown and the gang) and its creator, Charles M. Schultz, in a joyous and nostalgic celebration.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The filmmakers – director Steve Martino (“Horton Hears a Who”) and writers Craig Schultz (Charles’s son), Bryan Schultz (grandson) and Cornelius Uliano – kept a philosophy of “Wwcsd” (What would Charles Schultz do?), and produced a animated feature that contains the best of what made “Peanuts” great. The look is as if the comic strip has sprung to life, especially in optional 3D, and the character voices and feel have the same warmth as the familiar TV specials (there are several references along the way to those treats as well). The story was incidental to the subplots that played like mini comic strips, featuring Good Ol’ Charlie Brown,...

The Peanuts Movie
Written by Bryan Schulz, Craig Schulz & Cornelius Uliano
Directed by Steve Martino
USA, 2015
The Peanuts Movie is like a warm blanket of nostalgia stitched together with modern technology. Crisp, beautiful animation highlights director Steve Martino’s ode to perseverance. Creator Charles M. Schulz would have praised the earnest purity of his classic characters, assuming the $100 million price tag didn’t render him speechless. The Peanuts Movie will enchant younger audiences with its spirit of adventure, while offering adults a welcome respite from irony and ugliness. Maybe Linus was onto something, because this security blanket never felt so good.
Charlie Brown (voiced by Noah Schnapp) may be a good man, but he can’t seem to catch a break. The local trees are littered with his failed attempts at kite flying (sometimes in the middle of winter), he has a standing therapy appointment at Lucy’s lemonade stand...

After reading the reviews, Charlie Brown won't have to sigh out his signature "Oh, brother!" any longer—The Peanuts Movie is a heart-warming hit. In the upcoming film adaptation of Charles M. Schulz's iconic comic strip characters, the Peanuts posse is caught in a balancing act between the traditional spirit of the 1950 hand drawn figurines and the modern marvels of 2015's 3D animation. According to the critics, director Steve Martino and producer Paul Feig find their footing in this tricky middle ground, gracefully combining the classic moments of the nearly bald blockhead and his gang of merry men— including sidekick Snoopy, sister Sally, blanket-wrapped...

When we live in an age when everything, no matter how pure the intent of the creator, is simply IP to be farmed, it is right to be suspicious of a "Peanuts" movie. After all, Charlie Brown and the rest of the characters created by Charles Schulz have been huge business for decades, and it makes sense that they would put something together if for no other reason than to keep the characters active in pop culture. Thankfully, it appears that the people behind "The Peanuts Movie" take the legacy of these characters very seriously, and the result is a gentle, charming movie that seems far less frantic than much of what is created for young audiences these days. Blue Sky, one of the two major producers of CG animated films for Fox, has produced ten feature films now, and while the majority of their efforts have been originals, it...

Spectre – November 6
Director: Sam Mendes
Stars: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux
Synopsis: A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.
Analysis: The question on a lot of people’s minds going into Spectre will no doubt be “is it going to be as good as or better than Skyfall?” Skyfall was certainly an awesome Bond movie, but if there is one thing we can take away from oh say Quantum of Solace, it’s that we should take each Bond movie as a single experience and try not to compare them with each other. That’s what I do anyway and it really takes away from the expectations and makes for a more enjoyable time.

Apologies if this sounds forward, but the race for Best Animated Picture is over. Pixar’s “Inside Out,” the company’s first original production since 2012’s “Brave,” arrives in theaters today with some of the most glowing reviews in the company’s history. For anyone else in the animated Oscar race that’s very bad news. At the time of this post, the Disney release has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with 170 positive reviews and just 3 negative opinions. On Metacritic “Inside Out” has an overall grade of 93 including 21 100 grades featuring raves from key critics A.O. Scott at the New York Times and Kenneth Turan at the Los Angeles Times. Many in Cannes thought it was a crime the picture wasn’t in competition and it’s expected to be Pixar’s second biggest opening since “The Incredibles” in 2004 (impressive considering “Jurassic World” will still be no. 1). There is no controversy. There is no disappointment.
