Before Romeo fell for Juliet, he lusted after her cousin, Rosaline. He exalted her beauty to his friends (“The all-seeing sun / ne’er saw her match since first the world begun”) and bemoaned her rejection (“She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / Do I live dead that live to tell it now”). To hoist the lovelorn Montague heir out of the depths of his dramatic doting, Romeo’s cousins encourage him to sneak into a Capulet supper. There he meets Juliet, and so begins their epic romance.
There have been attempts to nudge Rosaline out of the margins, to flesh a person out of a ghostly image. In some adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy, like Carlo Carlei’s Romeo & Juliet (2013), she gets more than a passing mention. In others, her presence is the point. Keira Knightley looks as though she walked out of a classic novel. She leveraged her swan-like neck, aristocratic pout, and cut-glass jawline for a slate of period piece films that defined her career in the early 2000s. As Lizzie Bennet in 2005's "Pride and Prejudice," she imbued England's most famous literary heroine with 19th-century moxie and a fiercely beautiful underbite. But the same actress who has brought so many characters from the page to the screen once struggled with a reading disability.

The Sheffield revival of A Taste of Honey should help us better remember an unfairly neglected playwright – but here's plenty of footage to be going on with
As a major of revival of Shelagh Delaney's A Taste of Honey opens in Sheffield, it's time to remember the debt owed to the playwright, who died last year, by many writers – even the songwriter Morrissey.

A major dictionary of theatre on my bookcase, dating from the mid-1990s, doesn't even mention the Salford-born Delaney, who can seen here in Ken Russell's 1960 Monitor film on the writer and her town.
The lack of recognition from the theatre world is probably partly because, after 1960, she largely turned her attention to screenplays, eventually writing the 1985 film Dance with a Stranger, in which Miranda Richardson played Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged for murder in England.

Keira Knightley is said to be in very early discussions to star in "Rosaline" for Fox 2000 reports Vulture. Knightley is both the studio and producer Shawn Levy’s first choice to play the lead role of Rosaline.
The film is an adaptation of Rebecca Serle's upcoming first novel "When You Were Mine" which re-tells Shakespeare’s great tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" from the perspective of the normally unseen Rosaline, the celibate niece of Capulet and Romeo's first love. When Romeo sneaks into a Capulet gathering to find her towards the play's start, he spots Juliet instead and instantly falls in love with her.
Though frequently mentioned throughout the play, the character never actually appears and has only rarely been portrayed on film (and even then in tiny cameos). In many ways she's the quintessential plot device, without her Romeo wouldn't be at a Capulet party and thus wouldn't meet Juliet.

The millionaire actress owns a sheepskin coat from fashion house Burberry, which cost 2,795 pounds, but she could only go through with the purchase after being given the go-ahead by her mum Sharman MacDonald, who told her she had to wear the garment every day.

And then literally it was months and months of thinking about it and thinking, 'I'm not going to do it, I'm not going to do it,' " she told Elle magazine. Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley in The Edge of Love
Photo: Capitol Films John Maybury has directing films for some time, but it wasn't until 2005's The Jacket starring Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody that he popped up on my radar. I didn't particularly like that film, but I'm not about to throw a guy under the bus after the first go 'round, especially when his follow-up stars Knightley, yet again, along with Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys. While I would say The Edge of Love is certainly a step up from The Jacket it never quite manages to get over the hump as the story seemed almost too big for only one two hour feature. This film could have been a three-hour epic and Maybury certainly shot it as one, but the fact it works on any level is due to a great cast that saves many...

While World War II raged across Europe, Dylan Thomas served the United Kingdom by writing scripts for propaganda films and reading his poems on the radio, though he struggled throughout with conflicting impulses. How could he support the war effort with positive messages, yet still satisfy a poet’s need to document pain and horror? In John Maybury’s period romance The Edge Of Love—written by noted British playwright Sharman Macdonald—all of London seems to be suffering a similar identity crisis. Does Keira Knightley ever get to take a break? She's without question one of the industry's foremost young actresses, but since her 2002 breakthrough in "Bend It Like Beckham," she's also seemed hell-bent on proving herself the hardest working. In the past three years alone, she's appeared in two blockbusting installments of "Pirates of the Caribbean," snagged a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the lauded Ian McEwan adaptation "Atonement," strapped on a corset for "The Duchess" and shrugged out of one for "Silk." But she assures she's had her fair share of time off: "I am sort of chomping at the bit to get going. I got tired, and I wanted to be hungry for it again. And I am very hungry for it now and I can't wait to start."

The startup aims to produce big-screen outings based on the works of author Penny Vincenzi, starting with her novel "Windfall," for which the trio have commissioned Sharman MacDonald to pen the script.

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- A poet, a warrior and their two lovers form a complicated quartet in John Maybury's "The Edge of Love", a story of wartime romance in which fidelity and trust are put to the strictest test. It opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The poet is extraordinary Welshman Dylan Thomas, played with echoes of the young Richard Burton by Matthew Rhys, but the film's literary appeal is made broader because of excellent playing by Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller as the main women in his life. Capturing superbly the claustrophobic atmosphere of London in the Blitz during World War II and measuring the irreconcilable differences between love and war and poetry and combat, the film succeeds as a deeply involving study of men and women caught up in a whirlwind beyond their control.
It will take careful marketing for the film to find its audience, but the big names involved, the ongoing fascination with Thomas and excellent music supplied by veteran Angelo Badalamenti all serve it well.
Sharman Macdonald's astute screenplay swiftly sets up the dynamic between the foursome. Thomas is a sweet, gifted man who can be a right bastard. As the film starts, he is writing propaganda films as a conscientious objector. In a London pub, he runs into his childhood sweetheart, Vera (Knightley), who is a talented singer reduced to performances in London Underground stations while the Nazi bombs fall.
To Vera's dismay, Thomas has a cheerfully unfaithful wife, Caitlin (Miller), but the two fast become friends and turn into a threesome. That relationship is disturbed, however, when soldier William Killick (Cillian Murphy) falls in love with Vera and sets out to woo her. The film follows their story as Killick is sent off to battle and Vera becomes pregnant. When the warrior returns much changed, there is a seismic shift that affects all of them.
Maybury draws terrific performances from his cast. Rhys (ABC's "Brothers & Sisters") reads Thomas' poetry wonderfully and plays the Welsh icon with warts and all. Murphy also brings poetry to the role of the warrior.
But the film belongs to the women, with Knightley going from strength to strength (and showing she can sing!) and Miller again proving that she has everything it takes to be a major movie star.

Keira Knightley isn't anorexic – her slim figure is thanks to her dad, not a restrictive diet, says the star's mom. "She has always been thin," Knightley's mother, Sharman Macdonald, told Britain's Sunday Times. "She's her daddy's daughter, with his long body." Like her father, the actress, 23, must "eat like a horse," to maintain her weight, Macdonald said. Knightley eats a diet high in protein and carbohydrates to make sure she doesn't lose any more weight.Last year, Knightley successfully sued Britain's Daily Mail, saying that the tabloid implied she'd lied about having an eating disorder. In 2006, Knightley vociferously denied that she suffered from anorexia.

Keira Knightley's screenwriter mother Sharman MacDonald has hit out at media rumours suggesting her daughter is suffering from anorexia - comparing the press to "playground bullies".
Knightley has long been dogged by rumours that her waif-like figure is the result of an eating disorder, but she has always denied this - blaming her genes for her naturally svelte figure.
Last year, the 23-year-old successfully sued a British tabloid newspaper for publishing an article which accused her of being anorexic and setting a bad example to young girls.
And the star's mother Macdonald can't understand why the media is so obsessed with her daughter's weight.
She tells British newspaper The Sunday Times, "She's always been thin. She's her daddy's daughter, with his long body.
"It's a playground situation that we're looking at with the press - it's a form of bullying - but what can we do?"...

Keira Knightley clashed with her screenwriter mother Sharman MacDonald over their forthcoming movie The Edge Of Love - because the actress refused to play the part her mum had specifically written for her.
Macdonald told her daughter she had penned the role of Caitlin Thomas just for her in the upcoming film about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas - but the 23-year-old had other ideas.
Macdonald recalls, "I said, 'You're playing Caitlin,' and she said, 'No, I like Vera.'"
As a result, the part of Vera Phillips, one of the Welsh poet's love interests, was transformed - to Knightley's liking.
Macdonald adds: "She wasn't even a singer until Keira decided to play her."
The movie is set for its world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in Scotland on 18 June.

They shared a nude Vanity Fair cover, and now Keira Knightley is showing vocal prowess to rival that of other actress-turned-singer Scarlett Johansson. As Vera Philips, the lover of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in the new biopic, The Edge of Love, Knightley, 23, sings "Blue Tahitian Moon." "I did some lessons with a voice coach because I can't sing," the actress recently said. "It was live. There were 100 extras and John [Maybury, the director] was like, 'Now you're going to sing.' I've never been so frightened in my entire life." The film, written by Knightley's mom, Sharman Macdonald, and costarring Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys,...

Hollywood stars like Julia Roberts, Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp look set to boycott this Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony to show their support to striking writers. Actors represented by the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) are in "unanimous agreement" not to ignore the plight of the Writers Guild of America union members, who are picketing over royalties. Announcing the union's decision on Friday, SAG president, Alan Rosenberg, said, "After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA (Writers' Guild of America) picket lines." In response to the boycott action, the WGA members thanked the SAG for its "solidarity and support." Other stars nominated for gongs at the prestigious ceremony include George Clooney, John Travolta, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett and Jodie Foster - all of whom are unlikely to appear at the awards show if the WGA members do not reach an agreement with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the Golden Globes, in time for next Sunday. Knightley, who is up for Best Actress for her starring role in Atonement, is particularly supportive of the strike, because of her playwright mother, Sharman Macdonald. A representative for the British beauty confirms: "If the strike is still in place then Keira won't cross a picket line as her mother is a writer."...
