“We’re gonna be French fries! Human French fries!”
We’ve talked about the loose definition of based on a true story but what happen when what the movie is based on may not even be entirely factual. This is can happen with movies like The Possession which was based on an internet article that someone fleshed out into a story when they thought the thing they bought was cool. Other times a movie can be merely inspired by an event even when they don’t credit that event in the film’s credits. Think A Nightmare On Elm Street. Jim Carrey is firing back at the family of his deceased ex-girlfriend Cathriona White. “The Mask” star Carrey has filed a cross-complaint, claiming that a lawsuit alleging that he was responsible for White’s death is just the latest in a number of extortion attempts against him. Carrey is being sued by White’s estranged husband Mark Burton and mother Brigid Sweetman. The wrongful death lawsuit, initially filed in September 2016, alleges that Carrey illegally obtained “highly addictive and, in this case deadly” drugs under the name Arthur King, then gave them to White, subsequently causing her death in September 2015. Jim Carrey will answer questions about his late girlfriend Cathriona White’s suicide in a sworn deposition next month.
The actor is being sued for wrongful death by White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton, and her mother, Brigid Sweetman. The two complaints were consolidated into a single case on Thursday, with both claiming that Carrey obtained the drugs that killed White under the false name “Arthur King” and provided them to her, despite knowing she was prone to depression and had previously attempted suicide. Furthermore, they allege that Carrey gave White “three STDs without warning her.”

Jim Carrey is dropping a request that his late girlfriend’s mother, who is suing him for wrongful death, pay him $372,000 should he win the case.
The motion to drop the undertaking, obtained by People, was filed by Carrey’s attorneys earlier in the week. Brigid Sweetman filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Carrey in October after her daughter Cathriona White, who had been dating Carrey on and off for years, died by suicide in 2015. She claims the actor provided her daughter with the prescription drugs that caused her death.
In addition to Sweetman, White’s estranged husband Mark Burton is also suing the actor.

In the latest salvo in a bitter legal battle, Jim Carrey has accused his late girlfriend Cathriona White‘s mother of making irrelevant and false allegations against him in her wrongful death lawsuit.
In court documents obtained by People, Carrey has asked the judge to strike all allegations and mentions of him suffering from multiple STDs and passing them to White during their relationship, calling the claims “irrelevant” to the case.
Carrey, 54, also points out that in two of White’s suicide notes, she wrote lovingly of him, describing him as family — and makes no mention of Brigid Sweetman, her mother.

It's hard to believe now that it has been over a year since we lost Wes Craven, one of the all-time great horror filmmakers who knew better than most how to truly scare an audience. His special gift wasn't that he was the most polished of directors; with only a few exceptions (like Scream), his movies were mostly rough edges. I happen to like rough edges. No, Craven's talent was for zeroing in on our primal fears and realizing them onscreen. He didn't want to spook us with tricks and jump scares and he rarely wanted the horror to be "fun." He wanted to shake us to our cores. This was especially true in much of his early work, primarily The Last House on the Left, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Hills Have Eyes, out now in a stunning limited edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

When I was a teenager, the Boy Scout troop that I was a member of consisted of nearly 25 scouts. We had a few older scouts whom the rest of the younger scouts looked up to, and during our weekend camping trips the seniors made every effort to scare the beejezus out of us youngsters with ludicrous tales of ghosts or killers hiding out in the woods. These stories were often woven around a campfire in the late hours of the evening when we were all seemingly vulnerable. During the summer of 1980, Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th was doing well at the box office, so I was already aware of these “murderers in the woods”-themed films. This didn’t make it any easier for us to go on camping trips! The success of Friday the 13th gave birth to countless carbon copies of young adults-being-stalked-in-the-woods films.

The third episode of the current season of Game of Thrones, which is featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, contains an Easter egg of Arthurian proportions: Monty Python references. The show's linguist, David Peterson, has revealed that the references appear in the scene where Daario Naharis faces off with the champion of Meereen and the latter shouts at Daenerys Targaryen in some foreign tongue. Although she asks what the invective means, she does not get an accurate translation. "He's actually saying a Low Valyrian translation of the French guy's...

Recent hot cinema topics such as the portrayal of the Mandarin character in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and speculations about what classic Star Trek villain Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in J.J Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness was modeled after leading up to the film’s release, among others, underline the importance of great villains in genre cinema.
Creating a great cinematic villain is a difficult goal that makes for an incredibly rewarding and memorable viewer experience when it is achieved.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains. Other writing on this subject tends to be a bit unfocused, as “greatest villain” articles tend to mix live-action human villains with animated characters and even animals. Many of these articles also lack a cohesive quality as they attempt to cover too much ground at once by spanning all of film history.

As a comic nerd, I want the stories I read to be true and faithful to the source material when portrayed on the big or small screen. Recently, I had been thinking about the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy. In the first film of the series, Spidey faced off against the Green Goblin. Awkwardly enough, the Goblin’s alias was Spider-Man’s best friend’s father. At the end of the film, Peter drops the body of Norman Osborn off at his home. It is here that we see Harry, Norman’s son, spot him. In the closing moments of the first film, within the funeral scene, Harry swears a vendetta to kill Spider-Man. We see this pursuit all the way throughout the second film. He finally learns who Spider-Man’s alias is, in the third film, he vows to take up the mantle of his father and become the new Green Goblin.

Being younger in High School, I loathed history class and I’m sure that I’m not the only one feeling that way. Granted, I had some really awesome teachers but still the subject they were teaching didn’t really grab my attention. Being older now, I look at our culture and see the cool side of this much hated subject. However, we’re taught history in mediums in which we may look at and not even see history. Take for example: Comic Books. The majority of the characters that are written for the film, television show, or audio dramatic audiences already have history to them. It’s just a matter of having the passion to know more about it. Have you ever seen a film or television show that you loved so much, you wanted to know every small detail about it? Let’s be honest, I know I...

When asked why most of Sid Caesar’s writers were young and Jewish, the late’ great Larry Gelbart replied, “Because most of our parents were old and Jewish.”
The answer to why there were so many Jews in Broadway musicals may not be as glibly succinct, but in Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy, which debuts on PBS on January 1 at 9:30 p.m., the answers are insightful and amazingly entertaining.
Written, produced and directed by Emmy-Award Winner Michael Kantor (Broadway- The American Musical and Make ‘Em Laugh- The Funny Business of America), the 90 minute documentary tries to answer the question of why the Broadway musical proven to be such fertile territory for Jewish artists of all kind, featuring icons from Broadway’s golden age, including Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, the Gershwins, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim...

Things have been heating up on "Arrow" recently with the introduction of John Barrowman as the sinister Malcolm Merlyn, father of Oliver Queen's best friend Tommy Merlyn. While much has yet to be revealed about the Merlyn clan and what kinds of problems they might pose for Oliver in the future, the name Merlyn has much significance in Green Arrow lore.
This week in Hollywood Justice, we're going to take a look at the Merlyn of the comics, how he has bedeviled Green Arrow over the years, and what makes him such a fitting archnemesis.
Merlyn, A.K.A. Arthur King, made his debut in 1971's "Justice League of America" #94, by Mike Friedrich, Neal Adams, and Dick Dillin. He got his nom de guerre not through any actual feats of mysticism, but for his seemingly magical mastery of the bow and arrow. Hired by the League of Assassins to take out their foe Batman,...

The spotlight may be on Jay-z rapping at Brooklyn's spanking new Barclays Center this week, but Food Network host Sunny Anderson is out to give some shine to another New York native -- baked-goods startup Brooklyn Cupcake.
"In every nook and cranny of this country are people that have great recipes," Anderson told The Huffington Post, offering a sneak peek at her new show, "Home Made in America," which looks at the best homegrown recipes across the U.S.
"People that cook have stories behind those recipes, so I'm just out there to figure out how people came up with stuff," Anderson said. "We have people that have started businesses from their recipes, and some have done charitable works."
First stop: Brooklyn Cupcake, a family-run business born when owner Carmen Rodriguez was laid off from her previous job and her mother generously offered up her entire life savings to get the bakery off the ground.

We've been waiting patiently for the full specs on this one to come in, and now that they're here, we couldn't be happier. If only someone would give us a Blu-ray of the second flick so we can see the dog's flashback in glorious 1080p!

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Say this for the recent trend toward remaking horror favorites from the ’70s: It’s likely that projects as unremittingly grisly and brutal as the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn Of The Dead and now The Hills Have Eyes might have had a lot more trouble getting in the studio doors were they not based on recognizable known quantities. Whatever one thinks of their overall quality, it has to be acknowledged that the Chainsaw and Dawn reduxes made honorable attempts to recapture the intensity of their forebears. But the 21st-century Hills is the first of this group to outdo its predecessor, elaborating on Wes Craven’s original in ways that both honor and improve upon it, with genuinely bloodcurdling results.

Hey, remember “Shocker”? Or “The People Under the Stairs”? No? Well, er, they were horror movies from the late ’80s-early ’90s by Wes Craven. “Shocker” was about a death row inmate who got electrocuted but instead of dying gained powers (hate it when that happens), while “People Under the Stairs” was about a crazy couple that kept people hidden in their walls. Or, er, under the stairs. I think. Point is, Wes Craven is now thinking about remaking both of them. Wes Craven told the boys at Arrow in the Head this during a shindig celebrating the upcoming “The Last House on the Left”, another remake of a Craven movie: “We’re actually talking about remaking The People Under The Stairs. Possibly Shocker also. So these ones that we’ve been remaking, especially The Hills Have Eyes and The Last House On The Left, I own with the producer. Two...
