Although Netflix is still working its way around the Asian movies in its catalog, in terms of series the quality is quite high, with a quality in terms of production values of many of them being comparable, if not better with feature films. “Sanctuary”, which takes a look at the world of sumo, is definitely one of those films.

The protagonist of the series is Kiyoshi Oze, a young delinquent from a broken family, which was destroyed when his father's debts forced him to close the shop, sending him into a being a traffic light attendant, and his wife, who obviously underwent some sort of shock, into prostituting. Kiyoshi was a judo champion at a teenager, but now finds himself bullying his way around life, until a proposition from Ensho, the owner of a sumo stable and the promise for...

Sanctuary is a Japanese film directed by Kan Eguchi, starring Wataru Ichinose, Shôta Sometani y Shiori Kutsuna,
If you expect something traditional from the Japanese country… not at all. Sanctuary is a very modern and humorous series about the world of sumo, the Japanese most famous sport.
About the series
A very realistic series in certain aspects, but without ever forgetting the fictional premise. It is the story of a boy who reveals himself to be arrogant and full of flaws but ends up conquering the public in a sport rooted in tradition.
The series seeks a bit of this, to combine the traditional with the modern show, to give a pick of the ins and outs of this intricate sport.
Is it a great series? To be honest, we are not going to recommend it. It is not a series that stands out at the production level, although it...

Netflix pitches it as “a gritty look into the underbelly of professional sumo, a world full of young men with ambitions for money, women, fame, and power […] where some may find sanctuary with a history of more than 1,500 years in Japan’s traditional culture and as a religious ceremony.”
The show is directed by Eguchi Kan from a screenplay by Kanazawa Tomoki. The producer is Fujita Daisuke and the executive producer for Netflix Sakamoto Kaata. The show will upload from May 4.
The diverse cast includes Ichinose Wataru, Sometani Shota (“Themis”), Kutsuna Shioli (“Deadpool 2”), Taguchi Tomorowo,...

Every Friday, we’re recommending an older movie available to stream or download and worth seeing again through the lens of our current moment. We’re calling the series “Revisiting Hours“— consider this Rolling Stone’s unofficial film club. This week’s last-column-of-2018 edition: David Fear on Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s J-horror cyber-nightmare Pulse.
“Would you like to meet a ghost?”

Although, in their vast majority, they are not at all well known outside Japan, indie dramas are probably the genre with the most entries in Japanese cinema. Among this plethora, “Laundry” is one of the films that stands apart.
Twenty-year-old Teru had an accident when he was a child that has impaired his intellectual ability, making him think and act like a little kid. Not having many options, he “works” at his grandma’s coin laundry, where he actually acts as a guard against perverts trying to steal women’s underwear. The regulars are a number of peculiar individuals, including a middle-aged photographer who has forcefully made Teru hang her framed photos on the wall of the shop, and a failed boxer, who after his latest loss decides to spend much of his time inside one of the washing machines. Teru’s life moves slowly and uneventfully, until Mizue, a gorgeous woman,...

Here’s the first teaser for Hajime Hashimoto’s Tantei wa Bar ni Iru, which recently surfaced on YouTube.
Based on Naomi Azuma’s novel “Bar ni Kakatte Kita Denwa”, the second installment of the author’s “Susukino Tantei” detective series, the film stars Yo Oizumi as a private detective who bases his business out of a bar in Susukino, a red-light district in Sapporo, Hokkaido. In keeping with that premise, Oizumi’s character turns to the audience in the teaser and says “If something comes up, call me here.”
One day, he receives a call from a mystery woman (revealed in the teaser as being played by Koyuki) who gets both he and his combative-yet-reliable partner Takada (Ryuhei Matsuda) involved in a dangerous new case. Toshiyuki Nishida also stars as a wealthy industrialist.
Toei will be releasing “Tantei wa Bar ni Iru” in Japan on September 10, 2011

“Kamui: the Lone Ninja” is a live action adaptation of the legendary Japanese manga created back in 1964 by Sanpei Shirato, directed by Yoichi Sai, previously responsible for the harrowing Takeshi Kitano drama “Blood and Bones”. The film is a wild fantasy adventure, which enticingly offers not only ninja action and the usual clan wars, but also pirates, sharks, and battles on the high seas. Written by Sai and Kankuro Kudo (“Zebraman”, “Ping Pong”), the film features an all star cast headlined by Matsuyama Kenichi (Detroit Metal City), with support from Koyuki (“Blood: The Last Vampire”), Ito Hideaki (“Umizaru”), Tsuchiya Anna (“Sakuran”), and Ohgo Suzuka (“Into the Faraway Sky”), with an appearance from Hong Kong star Ekin Cheng (“The Storm Warriors”). The film now arrives on region 2 DVD and Blu Ray via Manga Entertainment. The film is set in 17th century Japan, and follows Kamui (Matsuyama Kenichi), a young ninja whose...

Previously only seen in glimpses as a teaser trailer, here’s your first full look at the big-budget live-action “Space Battleship Yamato” movie via YouTube. Based on the popular anime, the live-action movie is directed by Takashi Yamazaki (“Returner”), and stars Koyuki (last seen in “Blood: The Last Vampire”), Aya Ueto (star of the “Azumi” movies), and Takuya Kimura (“I Come with the Rain”). It was apparently shown during a Japanese TV show, hence the Pip with the people, uh, watching the trailer along with us. To save the human race once again facing the danger of extinction, the restored Yamato voyages in to outer space. The year is 2220. A black hole with a size 300 times larger than the sun approaches the Solar System and the earth is expected to fall in to massive black hole. A transmigration to the Sairam Star begins and the first convoy led by Kodai Yuki departs the earth.

Well it took a while, but here’s the trailer for Hideyuki Hirayama‘s “Shin-san: Tankou-machi no Serenade”, an adaptation of a novel by Tomoki Tsujiuchi.
This project has been a pretty tough one to follow. It was originally announced simply as “Shin-san” and filming took place throughout all of Kyushu back in the Fall of 2008. However, distributor Goldrush Pictures never came up with a release plan and the completed film sort of got trapped in limbo. In the meantime, the title was changed to “Boku no, Suki na Hito.”, then changed again to it’s current title.
Plot: In 1963, Michiyo Tsujiuchi (Koyuki) returns to her coal mining hometown in Fukuoka with her elementary school-aged son, Mamoru. One day, Mamoru is being harassed by a group of rowdy kids when he’s suddenly rescued by a notorious tough boy named Shinichi, aka Shin-san. Shin-san’s parents died when he was young,...

First of all, I haven't seen this film's source material, which is the anime movie of the same name. Now, let's get straight to the point. This vampire action flick could have been way better. However, this film's problem is its short length, the lack of margin of manoeuvre for the cast and its excessive focus on sword fights.
Since the 16th century, Japan has been a feeding ground for demons. They live among mortals by physically passing off as human beings. Now, let's fast forward to the 1970s: Saya (Gianna Jun), the last being of human and vampire extraction on Earth, has lived as a loner for 400 years with one purpose. She seeks to kill all vampires, especially Onigen (Koyuki), the highest ranking and strongest vampire. Besides, Saya works for a secret organization known as "The Council". The latter sends her around the world to kill vampires and then...

I’ve seen quite a few different reviews of this movie before I watched it and it’s difficult when you’re in that situation as you go into it with pre-coceived ideas. My expectations were very low because I hadn’t heard an awful lot of good things about the movie but, I think because of that, it turned out to be a little better than I expected.
Blood: The Last Vampire is directed by Chris Nahon and stars Gianna Jun, Allison Miller, Liam Cunningham, Jj Feild, Koyuki and, believe it or not, Larry Lamb who you’ll recognise from Eastenders and Gavin and Stacey. On the surface, Saya is a beautiful 16-year-old, but underneath that youthful exterior hides a tormented soul. When her human father was brutally murdered by Onigen,...

There are certain films that can ultimately be forgiven of their faults provided they supply something else in lieu. The Crank films are a perfect example of that as is pretty much every slasher film ever made. Be it gratuitous action, some gross out comedy, or special effects one can easily forgive terrible writing and directing if there’s something that entertains (just look at the success of a certain toy movie.) Many will try to make the argument that Blood: The Last Vampire functions well with this mindset. Many people will be very mistaken as Blood is nothing more than a cheaply made exercise that wants to cash-in on the vampire craze plaguing humanity right now.
There’s a couple of forces at work saving this picture from being a total disaster. Liam Cunningham is the only member of the cast who seems to be having any sort of fun.

"Blood: The Last Vampire" is a Hong Kong-style action movie of the leap-kicking, sky-sailing, blood-spurting variety. It was made in English by a French TV-commercials director, with Korean, American and Irish stars, and lots and lots of demons of a rubberish sort that recall the Toho monster movies of 50 years ago. It's a picture with the unbridled high spirits of its low intentions, and it's a reasonable amount of fun.
This "Blood" is a live-action remake of the well-regarded 2000 Japanese anime film of the same title, with much new backstory shoveled in to clarify the sparse plot of the original (which was distinguished chiefly by its innovative digital environments). Once again we meet 16-year-old demon hunter Saya (Gianna Jun) on the Tokyo subway. Black-clad and broody, she's stalking a nervous...

Gianna Jun in Blood: The Last Vampire
Photo: Samuel Goldwyn Films Adapted from a short 43-minute Japanese anime of the same name, Blood: The Last Vampire is a direct-to-dvd quality theatrical release filled with digital blood droplets and enough quick editing to give you an eye-sore as director Chris Nahon does his best to hide the fact it was made on a limited budget. But I don't think the film could have been any better with the choppy script filled with bad dialogue and the "what kind of trouble can they get in next?" approach to the action. Topping it off, the supporting cast on display doesn't help matters. Strangely enough, I have a bit of a soft spot for direct-to-dvd quality films and sometimes wish I had more time to spend with the myriads of them that show up on my doorstep almost daily (such as that Vinnie Jones...

If you’re a fan of Japanime, or event just a fan of action thrillers, then I suggest you take a look at our latest Japanese import - Blood: The Last Vampire.

It almost feels like we do as much press for Chris Nahon's Blood: The Last Vampire as we do for that little Rob Zombie movie which will be kicking around in August. After all, what better way to counter-attack the mind-numbing effects of the new Haddonfield than with a hot Asian chick swinging a sword and cutting up the demonic foes that come her way?

Okay, I’ll admit not knowing much about the “Blood: The Last Vampire” other than it seems to be a favorite of anime- and manga-savvy friends of mine. But after seeing how well “Death Note,” one of my favorite series, was translated to the live-action medium, I’m willing to give anything a shot.
Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a big batch of images from the upcoming, live-action adaptation of “Blood:The Last Vampire,” which stars Gianna Jun as Saya, a 400-year-old, half-vampire assassin on a covert mission in Vietnam-era Japan. Tasked with infiltrating a military school to discover the identity of a hidden demon, Saya has to find out which one of her classmates is the deadly creature preying on humans.
Over at SciFi Wire, they’ve posted 10 of the images that were released today, but here’s a few of the pics that haven’t been seen elsewhere yet:...

Samuel Goldwyn Films sent over the latest English trailer for “Blood: The Last Vampire” yesterday, and today they’ve returned with the latest poster. It features the main character Saya with her trusty swords. The girl in the small background pic, I believe, is Masiela Lusha of The George Lopez Show. Not sure why they decided to feature her in the poster with Gianna Jun, since as far as I know she’s a minor character in the movie. From the UK to the Japan front, we been tracking the progress for the live action film adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire and now the french has join in on the promotion. Allocine is hosting a new trailer with never before seen shots and six making-of videos, all in english dialogue. After watching all the videos, I gotta tip my hat to Jeon Ji-Hyun (english screen name: Gianna Jun) for the hard training she endured to play the lethal vampire hunter Saya. It must of been physically straining and painful on her (see third making-of video). A special mention also must be made on Koyuki. I had no idea she can speak english so fluently. And who’s the actor playing the old Japanese guy engaging in a sword duel against a gang of warriors? Its none other than veteran martial artist Yasuaki Kurata. I couldn’t tell before...

Action-horror-thriller movie "Blood: The Last Vampire" has welcomed its new trailer, less than two months after its full-length Japanese trailer debuted in March. The more than one-minute footage, which is exclusively featured on ShockTillYouDrop.com, begins with a scene showing its main character Saya fighting her enemy inside a moving train. And as the video keeps rolling, more of Saya's fighting scenes are exposed. She is mostly seen in the trailer using her samurai skills to fight her foes.
Based on a 2000 anime film of the same title which was produced by Production I.G and Aniplex, "Blood: The Last Vampire" centers its story on Saya, a 16-year-old girl who was born to a human father and a vampire mother. Growing up as a loner, she is obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts.
