When Donald Cammell's techno-horror "Demon Seed" crept into theaters in 1977, critics were not impressed. From being described as utterly nonsensical to being viciously torn apart as a film with no right to exist, "Demon Seed" was mostly reviled as unwatchable garbage that relied on flagrant shock value to capture audience attention.
Today, the film's critical reappraisal does not quite elevate "Demon Seed" into a cult classic but does approach it with a more balanced lens, where there is some value to be found in its social commentary about technological singularity and the uprooting of female autonomy. Cammell's film is an uncomfortable look into the extent to which those in power wish to control bodily autonomy — a theme that feels especially poignant now. Apart from this, "Demon Seed" also underlines the horrifying extremes of unchecked artificial intelligence, and how it preys on those it perceives as easily exploitable.

Ben Affleck’s Only Horror Movie Was So Bad It Couldn’t Even Earn More Than $10 Million at Box Office
Ben Affleck’s done a lot in Hollywood, you know? He’s been in all sorts of movies, from those big action flicks to the tear-jerker dramas. But when the 51-year-old dipped his toes into horror with Phantoms back in ’98, it didn’t quite hit the mark.
Ben Affleck in Justice League
The movie just couldn’t grab people’s attention, making less than 10 million bucks at the box office. Even though it had a cool idea and Affleck’s star power, Phantoms just didn’t live up to the hype, ending up as one of those forgettable horror flicks. It’s kinda curious why folks didn’t vibe with it and what it says about the actor’s career in movies.
Ben Affleck’s Sole Horror Movie Outing Was a Complete Flop
Ben Affleck tried his hand at horror, and let’s just say it didn’t end well.

Novelizations became popular at a time when home video was either unavailable or just too expensive to own. So these books were, in essence, cheap keepsakes after seeing and enjoying a film in theaters. In the case of 1981’s The Funhouse, however, the novelization came out first. This was on account of the film, directed by Tobe Hooper, taking longer to complete than originally anticipated. It seemed unwise to release the book first, considering the risk of spoilers. As it turned out, though, it was hard to spoil anything when the novel and film were as different as night and day.
Dean Koontz, who used multiple pseudonyms throughout the early years of his career, had yet to achieve any substantial success when he agreed to write the novelization for The Funhouse. On top of the financial incentive, the proposal of adapting Larry Block’s screenplay simply intrigued Koontz. After all,...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit USA Network’s “Frankenstein,” which was produced by Lions Gate Films and originally aired on October 10, 2004.
After “The X-Files” (originally) came to an end, other genre properties popped up in an effort to fill the hole it left behind. One of them was the USA Network’s “Frankenstein.”
This TV movie wasn’t so much about Frankenstein as it was an attempt at a murky cop procedural that so happens to involve undead monsters and mutants lurking in Louisiana.
From executive producer Martin Scorsese, “Frankenstein” originally aired as a means of setting the stage for an elaborate horror thriller with a monster-of-the-week approach, following two cynical detectives on the hunt for the mythical mad doctor.
Engineered by famed author Dean Koontz, the movie was a twist on the Mary Shelly story for a more contemporary setting that, at the very least,...

Ah, the late 1990s, a period of horror renewal, massive hits, and plenty of scares. Well, yes and no. Some films like the Scream franchise hit it big, like really big, and others, not so much. One of the failures of the late 1990s box office is Phantoms (watch it Here) which was considered a massive flop. How did Phantoms become considered one of the biggest flops of its era? Well, it’s a mix of a lot of factors, most of them easily guessed by those who have had the pleasure, or displeasure, of seeing the film. The story here is that of a small town where the whole of the population has vanished,...

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Silver Scream Con returned to the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 8-10 — ’cause let’s face it, baby, these days you gotta have a sequel!
Created by horror-inspired metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, Silver Scream Con has quickly established itself as a top-tier horror convention among celebrity guests and attendees alike. “Everybody’s been really nice, and I’m enjoying myself immensely,” said Tommy Lee Wallace, who created Michael Myers’ iconic mask for the original Halloween before going on to direct Halloween III: Season of the Witch. “I hope everyone gets the shit scared out of them!”
Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

Pavan Grover, a writer and producer on the recent action thriller “97 Minutes” starring Alec Baldwin, has spoken out about standing firm with the star in the aftermath of “Rust.”
Grover, a Houston-based spinal surgeon with a passion for cinema, debuted as a writer in 2002 with “Unspeakable” starring Dennis Hopper, and served as a producer on “Odd Thomas” (2013), based on Dean Koontz’s novel and directed by Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy”).
Grover pitched the idea of “97 Minutes” — a ticking-clock thriller in which a hijacked airplane has 97 minutes before it runs out of fuel — when he met Baldwin serendipitously at Sundance in early 2021. Once Baldwin was attached, the project raised coin via presales, distribution and American and international debt financing, based on the actor’s value in those markets.
Then, in October 2021, the “Rust” shooting happened. Baldwin was accused of negligently pulling the trigger on a prop gun, causing the...

Jimmy Juliano’s debut novel, “Dead Eleven,” has an unusual backstory.
The book, out Tuesday, is a spooky tale of a remote island where inhabitants are obsessed with ’90s nostalgia, which earned a coveted jacket blurb from “Goosebumps” guru R. L. Stine and already has a film development deal with A+E Studios. But Juliano is the first to admit that his path into publishing and Hollywood “feels like a back door into the industry.”
Juliano, an educator who works at Lake Forest High School in suburban Chicago, first made a name for himself as u/Red_Grin, a Reddit user posting scary stories to the NoSleep subreddit. The community, with over 17 million members, is “a place for redditors to share their scary personal experiences” — and while the stories (probably) aren’t real, “treat everything as though it is a true recount of events.”

Have you ever had a vacation so iconic that people are still talking about it over two centuries later? Mary Shelley sure did, with her infamous getaway alongside Percy Shelley, John Polidori, Claire Clairmont and their host Lord Byron resulting in some of the most influential genre fiction of all time. And while Byron’s Darkness and Polidori’s The Vampyre have their merits, it’s pretty clear that Frankenstein remains the most enduring product of that fateful literary holiday.
That’s why it’s no surprise that we’re still seeing fresh adaptations of The Modern Prometheus well into 2023, with Yorgo Lanthimos’ Frankenstein inspired Poor Things proving that there are still new ways of exploring the tragic horror of Shelley’s immortal yarn. And with so many great adaptations to choose from, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best modern Frankenstein retellings for your viewing pleasure.

Andy Cohen has refuted Ryan Seacrest’s claims that he snubbed Seacrest on New Year’s Eve.
On (31 December), both Seacrest and Cohen hosted ABC and CNN’s respective coverage of the evening approximately 10 feet away from each other in New York’s Times Square.
Afterwards, Seacrest told his Live! with Kelly and Ryan co-host Kelly Ripa, on Tuesday’s (3 January) episode, that Cohen, who was presenting alongside Anderson Cooper, ignored him when he tried to wave hello.
Seacrest claimed that while Cooper “turned around” and told him to “have a good show”, Cohen “did not turn around”.
Responding to Seacrest’s account of the night, Cohen has now offered his side of the story, denying that he had intentionally ignored Seacrest’s greeting.
“I didn’t see Anderson turn around and wave,” Cohen explained on a new episode of his Andy Cohen Live podcast.

Andy Cohen is done with Ryan Seacrest’s long-running New Year’s Eve drama.
Seacrest previously said on “Live! with Kelly and Ryan” that Cohen ignored Seacrest’s attempt to say hi to him during the broadcast. While Cohen’s CNN co-host Anderson Cooper waved to Seacrest, the “American Idol” producer claimed Cohen gave him the cold shoulder and “did not turn around” to acknowledge him 10 feet away from the stage.
Bravo mega-producer Cohen reacted to Seacrest’s statement, calling Cooper to clarify whether or not Seacrest was spotted during the live broadcast, on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” podcast.
“I didn’t see Anderson turn around and wave. Usually what Anderson will do, and I should, I should call him back and ask him about this, frankly. But I think he’ll yell at me if I do… usually if he’s waving at Ryan,...

Andy Cohen has explained why he was so shocked at Bethenny Frankel’s new Real Housewives rewatch podcast, ReWives.
Frankel previously starred in The Real Housewives of New York City, but left the show for the second time back in 2019.
Cohen is the executive producer of the show and previously said he was “shocked” that Frankel had started ReWives in an interview with PageSix.
Following the news, Cohen discussed his reaction while presenting his Sirius Xm talk show Radio Andy, with co-host John Hill on Wednesday (16 November).
Asked why he was surprised he said: “I was surprised at that because she’s been trashing the show for the last three years.”
“She’s been talking about that [saying] it’s toxic, and it’s this and every bad thing you can think she has been quoted saying about the show … and now she’s doing a Housewives recap podcast.”

One of the most common (and overused) setups in horror has to be a young babysitter fending off a killer. The trope existed on and off screen before Halloween, but there’s no denying the 1978 movie influenced countless people to make their own comparable stories about imperiled caregivers. Now, readers will take one look at HarperCollins’ 1995 young-adult series Baby-Sitter’s Nightmares and naturally think these terror tales are nothing more than rehashes of old slasher movies. Looks can be deceiving, though.
Bill Schmidt’s artwork for the first two Baby-Sitter’s Nightmares books show the main characters, both young and attractive teen girls, in familiar scenarios. On the cover of Daniel Parker’s Alone in the Dark, the babysitter clutches a phone handset, mouth agape with fear, and staring out the window. The art for M.C. Ghosts, vampires, mummies and the Devil are not things you would necessarily associate with a show like Quantum Leap.
Yet the premise behind creator Donald P. Bellisario’s cult favorite was one that required Scott Bakula’s body-snatching protagonist, Dr. Sam Beckett, to wear many hats – and, in one instance, a set of fangs.
Having leapt through spacetime during an experiment gone awry, Sam spent the show’s 97-episode run inhabiting a wild array of characters, always with the aim of “putting right what once went wrong” and aided by Dean Stockwell’s Al, a hologram only Sam can see.
It was a setup that allowed Bellisario and the show’s writers to get creative and, every now and then, spring a supernatural surprise.
“The great thing about Quantum Leap was that every episode could be vastly different,” writer and producer Chris Ruppenthal told Den of Geek.

Stephen King turns 75 years old this week, just two weeks after the publication of his 64th novel, the already acclaimed Fairy Tale. Aside from a trickle of short stories he sold for a number of years starting in 1967, his career really began in earnest with the 1974 arrival of Carrie, his first published novel.
While the book sold modestly in hardcover, it was the sale of the paperback rights and the novel’s subsequent success in that format which enabled King to become a full-time writer and launch the historic career that is still going strong 48 years later and has made him one of the most successful and well-known writers of all time.

Tobe Hooper.
At the mere mention of his name, which of the late filmmaker’s works leap to mind?
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, of course. Certainly his most iconic film, and surely his masterpiece.
How about that film’s gonzo 80s sequel? Or perhaps Eaten Alive, his EC-tinged grindhouse film featuring a maniacal hotel proprietor and his pet crocodile? Maybe your mind leaps to his blockbuster spook story Poltergeist, his nightmarish alien invasion remake Invaders from Mars, or his superb television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot?
But what of The Funhouse, Hooper’s stylish, scary entry in the then-burgeoning teen slasher boom? Released in 1981, a golden year for releases in that subgenre, The Funhouse stands as a vital entry in the filmmaker’s canon, marrying his penchant for dark humor and grisly horror with a studio budget, paving the way for much of his work throughout the next decade.

There was no avoiding the elephant in the room on Andy Cohen's Sirius Xm series, Radio Andy. News that the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah plead guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with telemarketing broke mid-show on July 11, prompting a discussion between Andy and his co-host, actor John Hill. Andy was initially hesitant to dub Jen guilty, explaining that "all it means is she's changing her plea," but John retorted, "Right, well, when you say you're guilty of something, it maybe means you're guilty." Andy also revealed that Jen had just sent his 2-month-old daughter Lucy a gift "out of nowhere," he...

International best-selling author Dean Koontz has signed a five-book and six short thrillers deal with Amazon Publishing, the publisher announced today. Amazon’s thriller and mystery imprint Thomas & Mercer will publish the first book – Devoted – next spring.
Koontz’s short thriller collection Nameless will be available on Nov. 12 from Amazon Original Stories for free to Prime and Kindle Unlimited customers.
“For many years, I have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Brilliance Audio, an Amazon company, and later with Amazon Original Stories,” Koontz said in a statement. “Although there were numerous options for the future, it was most natural to sign with the team at Amazon Publishing, which presented a marketing and publicity plan smarter and more ambitious than anything I’d ever seen before.”
Koontz said the new arrangement is “so exciting, I’ve been creatively rejuvenated. The times are changing, and it’s invigorating to be where change is understood and embraced.

Halloween season is now upon us, and all of our favorite movies this time of year seem to focus on horror and things that go bump in the night. Well, in Cork, Ireland, there is a lot more than a bump going on at night. The below video was caught just after 3 a.m. last week on a security camera at a secondary school called Deerpark C.B.S.! Turn Your Sound Up!
Deerpark’s headteacher, Aaron Wolfe, was “puzzled” by the incident, which features slamming lockers, flickering lights and a flying “wet floor” sign, among other mysteries. But that's not all staff members do complain that this particular part of the building is always extremely cold. “It’s also outside the Religion Room—which is weird,” Wolfe muses. Also weird:
“Our caretaker has worked in the school for over 30 years he recalls many stories of ‘paranormal activity’.

Some very sad news is making the rounds today, as it has been reported that Fritz Weaver has passed away at the age of 90.
News of Fritz Weaver's passing was confirmed by Weaver's son-in-law, Bruce Ostler, according to The New York Times. In addition to winning a Tony award for his performance in 1970's Child’s Play, Weaver accumulated an impressive number of acting credits within the horror and sci-fi genres—on both the big and small screens—throughout his career.
Stephen King fans likely remember Weaver as Dexter Stanley from "The Crate" segment of Creepshow, where he starred alongside Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, and the creepy creature unleashed from its prison.
Weaver also left his mark on a number of anthology series, including The Twilight Zone, Monsters, Tales From the Darkside, Night Gallery, and Tales of the Unexpected, in addition to appearances on Friday the 13th: The Series and The X-Files.

TMZ reports that Yelchin was found pinned between his car and a brick mailbox structure on the fence outside of his home in San Fernando Valley in the early hours of Sunday morning. Foul play is not suspected, as it appears to have been a tragic accident in which Yelchin’s car, which was in neutral, rolled down the steep driveway and struck the actor, who was standing behind the vehicle. A killer robot powered by baby brains. Kirk Douglas wrestling in the nude. Ryan revisits the very weird 80s sci-fi movie, Saturn 3...
Some movies aspire to strangeness. Other movies have strangeness thrust upon them.
Saturn 3, released in 1980, was an intensely strange film. But unlike, say, Altered States (also released in 1980) it wasn’t made by a filmmaker with a taste for the oblique or the outre. Unlike Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination (1980 again), Saturn 3 wasn’t a low-budget shocker made in a hurry, but a relatively expensive exercise created by some of the most seasoned filmmakers in the business at that time. (For frame of reference, Saturn 3's budget was broadly the same as Alien’s, released less than one year earlier.)

For the first time ever, Donald Cammell’s obscure 1987 serial killer thriller White of the Eye is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States (the UK arm of Arrow Video brandished its own striking package of the title in early 2014). Director of only four features, including his iconic 1970 debut Performance (co-directed by Nicolas Roeg), Cammell’s quartet of features were all labors of love, the filmmaker undergoing significant set backs on each project up until his death following 1995’s Wild Side.
With seven to ten years in-between each outing, this feature marked the end of a decade long hiatus following 1977’s adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel Demon Seed starring Julie Christie. Adapting from an obscure novel by brothers Laurence and Andrew Klavan (a notable writer of mystery thrillers) writing under the pseudonym Margaret Tracy, Cammell’s wife and actress China Kong co-wrote the screenplay. Demon Seed (1977) was the latest in an ever growing subgenre of science fiction film: Technodoubt (okay, I just made that up). But as the world started to catch up with its imagination (Apple Computers was born in ’76), and technology raged forward like a silicon locomotive, Hollywood searched for ways to exploit mankind’s natural fear of progress. From the dangerously malfunctioning Hal in 2001 (1968), to the murderous androids of Westworld (’73), rich veins of cybernetic carnage were mined for maximum cinematic paranoia. Demon Seed upped the ante by downloading the menace right into the home.
Released in April by MGM, the film was not a commercial success by any means, but certainly drew attention from critics due to its unusual (and quite absurd) high concept story, a showcase performance from Julie Christie, and a piqued interest in director Donald Cammell. Regardless of the gateway, Demon Seed remains a unique genre treatise on dominance and loss.

It’s the most uncomfortable type of horror scene, but if done correctly, can pack a gut punch. The violation scene is the moment when the character’s vulnerability is betrayed and our empathy immerses us deeper into their dreadful ordeal. The young child possessed by an evil spirit. The unlucky bystander assaulted in a tunnel. The crazed woman submitting to a creature of non human origin. The violation scene can be emotional or it can be exploitative, but it’s almost always guaranteed to get us talking.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919)- Cesare abducting Jane
Even though it was one of the originators of German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is often regarded as the pinnacle for the movement. Two of the movement’s basic tenets were distorted lines and shapes and overly theatrical movements from the actors, and both are well on display in this creepy scene.

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided.
We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

At long last, The Following delivers the face-to-face confrontation we've been waiting for all season...
This review contains spoilers.
3.10 Evermore
This is what has been missing all along, and this is what I've been asking for since the beginning of the season. Joe and Ryan, the two most important characters on the show, trapped in a room together and forced to examine their codependent relationship in great depth and detail. Dreaming about one another, little conversations through glass windows or from behind bars, and finally, ten episodes into the show, we get something that actually matters between the two characters capable of holding our interest just through a conversation.
Joe, who we last saw making a shank out of a pair of sunglasses he pried off the dead body of Theo's mouthpiece, is facing his execution. The guards take him into the preparation room, he has a brief meeting with his lawyer,...

When will the zombie craze subside? According to our calculations: never. “If it ain’t broke” seems to be the sole reason in the current climate for perpetuating tales of the undead. One such sub-genre which has oddly enough flourished is the zombie comedy – aka the zom-com. First there was Warm Bodies, then Life After Beth, and now we’ve got the first clip from Burying The Ex.
Before you roll your eyes and click away, wait! There’s hope for this little gem – it’s directed by the man who brought us Gremlins, Joe Dante. It might not be the eighties anymore, and his recent output has shied away from obvious ghoul fests, but this could mark his return to the genre which made him famous.
Teaming up with indie kid Anton Yelchin, who battled against the supernatural in Dean Koontz adap Odd Thomas, looks like it was a wise decision.

As another autumn approaches, horror hounds look forward to the chill of pumpkin guts on their hands, the crunch of leaves under their shoes, and, for some, pulling their copy of October Dreams: A Celebration of Halloween off the bookshelf for another round of seasonal reading. Published in 2000, Cemetery Dance’s collection of Halloween stories, reflections, and essays now has a sequel on the way.
Featuring an abundance of short pieces by a wide range of authors, October Dreams II: A Celebration of Halloween doesn’t yet have an official release date, but it is expected to come out soon in a hardcover edition from Cemetery Dance. The tome of terror includes stories by Ray Bradbury, Dean Koontz, Robert Bloch, and many more. We have the official release details and cover art below. To learn more or pre-order a copy, visit:
