Instagram, what hath thou wrought?
Ridiculously handsome and charming Aussie Hugh Jackman has been sharing carefully curated snaps of his life with the world through this photo-sharing app, and the latest is just, well, you should probably just see it for yourself. While lots of people use Instagram to try and project what Oprah would call "our best life," Jackman is using it to give us a sneak peek at his rather unfortunate 'do for Neill Blomkamp's upcoming movie "Chappie." Filming has just kicked off in Johannesburg.
Jackman's co-stars in the sci-fi comedy include Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel, the voice of Sharlto Copley as Chappie, and the wonderfully weird Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja of the South African rap rave "zef" crew Die Antwoord. (Check out a pic of Yo-Landi on set here.)

Columbia Pictures has officially set a March 27, 2015 release date for writer/director Neill Blomkamp's Chappie a sci-fi comedy featuring the voices of Sharlto Copley (Elysium, District 9) and Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yolandi Visser (aka Watkin Tudor Jones and Anri Du Toit). The story revolves around a robot (Copley) imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters (Visser and Visser) who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. Blomkamp wrote the script with Terri Tatchell. If the name Yolandi Visser sounds at all familiar you may remember her as one of the candidates to play Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She is also referred to as Yo-Landi Vi$$er and was in our 2010 report. Perhaps the best part of this report is that Blomkamp didn't write the script on his own, but the idea of another...

Matt Damon stars in Neill Blomkamp's upcoming blockbuster Elysium, but he was the director's third choice for the role
Eminem and Die Antwoord rapper Ninja were each almost the stars of one of 2013's biggest sci-fi blockbusters. Both musicians reportedly turned down the lead role in Elysium, forcing director Neill Blomkamp to settle for plain old Oscar-winner Matt Damon.
Elysium, which will be released on 23 August, tells the story of Mac DeCosta, a reformed car thief, who travels to a luxurious space station controlled by the planet's richest people.
While Damon plays DeCosta in the completed film, he was apparently not Blomkamp's first or even second choice for the role. According to a new article in Wired, the South African director first approached one of his countrymen: Ninja, one half of the rap-rave trio Die Antwoord.

South African freak-rap trio Die Antwoord premiered their new video for "I Fink U Freeky," off second album, Ten$ion, yesterday, and it's just as weird, if not weirder, than their previous efforts. Looking like the unholy spawn of Tim & Eric and David Lynch, the black-and-white video features a grimy, Pauly D-coiffed Ninja (which sounds a lot tougher than Watkin Tudor Jones) rapping and dancing in his underwear, and Yo-Landi Vi$$er giving a shout-out to "sexy boys, fancy boys, playboys, bad boys," as DJ Hi-Tek pumps out his club-ready techno beats. The group's trademark trailer-trash, or "zef," style is prominently represented by rats and dirty, creepy kids (including a snake-draped cameo from Ninja and Yo-Landi's daughter, Sixteen), but there's also a dead lion, snakes, paper clothes, and a kid with a small elephant trunk for a nose. This week, two musical roads diverge. One is paved with chaos by So-Cal metalheads Avenged Sevenfold, subversive South African hip-hoppers Die Antwoord, and fabricated electro-dancehall act Major Lazer. The other road is covered in dirt by a suddenly bluesy Tom Jones and forever-folkie Mark Olson. Feel free to travel both -- even if some sections are worth skipping. Check out the Play > Skip Pick of the Week. Download now. Thank us later. Play: Die Antwoord, "5" This year's World Cup raised South Africa's profile. Cape Town's acerbic Die Antwoord will either kick it up another notch or send them back 20 years. The band is a mash-up of a numerous South African styles and cultures and is fronted by Ninja--the alter-ego of Cape Town performance artist Watkin Tudor Jones, who displays his "serious gangsta skill" while rapping shirtless in a pair of...

Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire, won the Directors Guild of America award Saturday night. It was the first time Boyle has been nominated for the award.
Boyle beat out fellow nominees David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Gus Van Sant (Milk), Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon).
After taking this prize and the Golden Globe for “Best Director,” it seems Danny Boyle is the man to beat on February 22 at the Oscars. The DGA Award has matched the Academy Award for “Best Director” all but six times since 1948 when the guild started presenting awards. It was a well-deserved win for the British director.
I picked Slumdog over Dark Knight as my favorite film of the year for a reason. Christopher Nolan is my favorite director working today, but Boyle has proven he can conquer any genre with solid, underrated films. He made a name for himself with Trainspotting,...

The Little Movie That Could can do no wrong. Danny Boyle was handed the DGA Award for outstanding directorial achievement in feature film for "Slumdog Millionaire."
Boyle walked away with the honor Saturday night during the DGA's annual awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Gus Van Sant ("Milk"), Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") and Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon"), who won the award in 1995 and 2001, also were nominated.
It was Boyle's first DGA nomination.
"If I can get here, you can get here," Boyle said from the podium, with the presenting Coen brothers behind him. "Dream hard."
It's been a miracle year for Boyle, the 52-year-old British director of "Shallow Grave," "Trainspotting," "A Life Less Ordinary," "The Beach," "28 Days Later...," "Millions" and "Sunshine." He's already been named the year's best director by several critics groups and took the top...

Although Ari Folman's "Waltz With Bashir" did not make the shortlist of 15 films under consideration for the best documentary Oscar, it is among the nominees for the DGA's doc award, announced Friday.
"Waltz" will compete with Gonzalo Arijon's "Stranded: I've Come From a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains," in which survivors of a 1972 Andes plane crash tell their story; Elizabeth Farnsworth and Patricio Lanfranco's "The Judge and the General," a look back at the investigation into the regime of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet; Peter Gilbert & Stevie James' "At the Death House Door," an examination of the wrongful conviction of a Texas man executed for murder; and James Marsh's "Man on Wire," a study of tight-rope walker Philippe Petit.
All the nominees are first-time DGA nominees, with the exception of Gilbert (who won the DGA's doc award in 1998 for "Vietnam: Long Time Coming" and was...
