For many cinephiles, especially those with a keen interest in Asian cinema, one of their first encounters with Japanese cinema comes in the shape of Takashi Miike’s works. Given the sheer number of features he has made ever since he got started at the beginning of the 1990s, this comes as no surprise. Movies such as “Ichi – The Killer”, “Dead or Alive” and “Audition” have cemented the reputation of Miike internationally and introduced many to his cinematic style, which has proven to very influential among his colleagues as well. However, with over 100 films directed, there are obviously a number of them which are either simply bad (“Salaryman Kintaro”) or have gone under the radar as Miike’s more popular works cast a shadow over them. One of these examples is “Blues Harp”, which is not only an overlooked gem in his filmography, but also, in my opinion, one...

The Ringu franchise has a much more convoluted history than most people realize, with Koji Suzuki’s original novel actually being part of a genre-bending trilogy that differs greatly from the established mythology of the films. In fact, before Sadako ever made the leap to the big screen (and consequently overseas), her first live-action appearance was in an obscure TV movie that preceded Hideo Nakata’s film by 3 whole years – and that’s not even mentioning the Korean adaptation from 1999.
My point is that the Ringu films have always thrived on iteration and innovation, with each new installment adding something new to the Suzuki’s original story and helping to propel Sadako to international infamy. These updates don’t always work, like in the case of 2012’s absurd Sadako 3D, but even then, the results are still usually entertaining. The latest of these narrative refurbishings comes in the form of Hisashi Kimura’s Sadako Dx,...

Yes, there are 10 now, with the latest one introducing the Young Ip Man, in a desperate effort to continue the franchise. Despite its evident downward spiral, though, the Ip Man series has presented a number of martial arts masterpieces through the years, which highlighted the prowess of individuals like Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Wilson Yip and Yuen Woo Ping among others. Also of interest was the path Wong Kar Wai and Herman Yau took the life of Bruce Lee’s teacher, resulting in more artistic entries, while the inclusion of individuals like Mike Tyson, can only be perceived as a treat.
Here is a look of all the entries in the series, in chronological order.
1. Ip Man (2008) by Wilson Yip

If one believes one of the leading experts on Asian, especially Japanese cinema, Blues Harp by Takashi Miike is “the film that will shed much-needed light on the hidden sides of that genuine filmmaker Takashi Miike”. In a year which can be regarded as one of the quieter years in the career of the director in terms of the film made, “Blues Harp”, together with “The Bird People in China” and “Young Thugs: Nostalgia”, defines indeed an emotional, even melancholic side of Miike, a name many film-goers and critics rather associate with excess, violence and and the ludicrous.

As with his “Black Society Trilogy”, especially “Rainy Dog” and “Ley Lines”, Miike has proven himself to be a director of many facets, even though his themes – the outsider, masculinity, violence and family units – have stayed at the core of most of his films. It is interesting that a...

After a decade-long stint in Hollywood, which includes the likes of a bombastic Mission: Impossible entry and the infinitely rewatchable Face/Off, in the last decade, John Woo has mostly stuck to large-scale Chinese epics which haven’t quite made a splash stateside. However, that could change which is next project, which finds him returning to his action roots.
Set to premiere at Venice Film Festival before heading to Toronto International Film Festival is Manhunt, Wood’s remake of the 1976 Japanese thriller Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare. Following a man who is framed for a robbery and rape and attempts to get on the right side of justice, the first trailer has now landed. Due to it being an international look, the editing is fairly clunky, but all in all, it’s nice to see Woo getting back to high-octane thrills.

The 74th Venice International Film Festival (August 30 – September 9) has just announced the world premiere of John Woo’s action thriller Manhunt as part of its Out of Competition roster. The film is hotly anticipated as it marks the return of the Hong Kong director to the police thriller genre 25 years after his classic Hard Boiled, starring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung and Anthony Wong.
Set in Japan, Manhunt is the story of a Chinese man wrongly convicted for rape and multiple murders. He becomes the target of a manhunt by the local Japanese police, while he sets out himself to find the real killers.
The film has Chinese star Zhang Hanyu (The Great Wall, Operation Mekong) and Japanese actor-musician Masaharu Fukuyama (Suspect X, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends) in the lead roles. The predominantly Japanese supporting cast includes Yasuaki Kurata, Jun Kunimura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Nanami Sakuraba, Naoto Takenaka and Tao Okamoto.

Railroad Tigers is one of those films where, despite its few-versus-many premise, the antagonist often feels like the one with nine lives. That is to say, it is not star Jackie Chan and his small band of freedom fighters who seem like they are surviving by the skin of their teeth, but instead gliding effortlessly through hazardous scenarios. With its 1941 setting in a small Chinese town invaded by the Japanese, this feels like a bit of an anomaly. Yet Chan and company dodge around, knock-out, and dupe their exceptionally silly Japanese oppressors (led by Hiroyuki Ikeuchi of Ip Man villainy) through almost every set-piece and moment of tension, conjuring up images of Buster Keaton or Road Runner. This function makes for some giddily fun scenarios, with wonderful choreography and cartoonish violence, but director and editor Ding Sheng makes the mistake of stuffing his two-plus-hour runtime with unnecessary downtime and bouts of narrative incoherence.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

Sadao Abe and Miho Kanno will be playing a married couple in an upcoming movie called Kiseki no Ringo (literally “Miracle Apples”), directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura (Fish Story, Golden Slumber).
The movie is based on a true story. Abe will play Akinori Kimura, an apple farmer who faces poverty and extreme pressure from those around him, causing him to contemplate suicide. Kanno plays his wife, Mieko.
The real Kimura first told his story on the Nhk program “Professional Shigoto no Ryuugi” and it was later adapted to a book titled “Kiseki no Ringo: Zettai Fukanō wo Kutsugaeshita Nōka - Kimura Akinori no Kiroku” which has sold over 600,000 copies. (And oddly enough, Yoko Ono has painstakingly translated the entire thing on her website.)
After Kimura’s wife experiences an extreme allergic reaction to agricultural chemicals, he’s faced with the seemingly impossible challenge of growing apples without the use of any pesticides.

Critics' Week has already begun celebrating its 50th anniversary by posting 50 video interviews with directors and actors who've seen their work debut in this section at Cannes. We're celebrating, too. In association with the 4+1 Film Festival, Mubi is presenting a retrospective of some of the greatest films first seen in Critics' Week over the past half-century. And even though the first 1000 views of each of the films will be free to you, the viewer, the rights holders will carry on receiving their duly earned revenue.
The retrospective encompasses over 100 titles in all, but please do keep in mind that rights issues can get complicated and not every film can be available in every country. That said, here's a quick overview of just some of the highlights:
Over in the Garage, a La Semaine Blogathon is already on the roll, starting with Kj Farrington's entry on Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know,...

Samurai action films have been enjoying a definite resurgence in Japanese cinema of late, with countless directors and hip young stars trying their hand at breathing new life into the time honoured form. “Tajomaru: Avenging Blade” is a prime example of this trend, being a revisioning of Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s enduring short story ‘In the Grove’, famously adapted for the screen as “Rashomon” by the legendary Kurosawa back in 1950. The film was directed by Nakano Hiroyuki (“Stereo Future”, “Have a Nice Day”) and stars popular heartthrob Oguri Shun (“Sukiyaki Western Django”, “Crows Zero”) in the titular lead role, with support from Shibamoto Yuki “(Bandage”), Kyosuke Yabe (“Samurai Zombie”), Tanaka Kei (“Suicide Club”, “Killer Virgin Road”) and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi (“Ip Man”). The 2009 release was a success, and with anime and manga adaptations in the pipeline, it now arrives on region 2 DVD through Manga Entertainment, coming with a respectable haul of extras...
