It feels safe to infer that the percentage of humans who had strong feelings about the news that “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” was being remade is statistically insignificant. Stephen Herek’s 1991 film, which starred Christina Applegate as a teenage girl who found her vacation plans spoiled when an absent mom and a deceased babysitter forced her to spend a summer caring for her four younger siblings, was dismissed as a forgettable riff on the “Home Alone” formula upon its initial release. While it eventually built the kind of modest fanbase that physical video stores often facilitated, the intellectual property was neither overdue for an update nor too sacred to touch.
That mass apathy ensured that Wade Allain-Marcus’ new remake had a wider berth for success than many of the comparable low-budget remakes that have been dumped on streaming services in recent years. There’s no denying that “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead...

Horror sure does come in all shapes and sizes. Let it be known that size always matters to some. But most importantly, the smaller they are the dastardlier and more vicious they become. Ah yes, we’re at that time of month again… what is with this starting off with sexual and body anatomy innuendos?! Goddamn it, ok, we’re back with another Horror Movie Rip-off which brings about two pint-sized demonoids covered in fur. These things possess not just some gnarly looking features to them but can be misconstrued and mistaken for the other. As I’m writing this, I’m starting to get some brain fog of who’s who, but in the end they’re both unique and seem like they’re both concocted out of Hp Lovecraft’s twisted, and nightmarish tales. It’s a shame this wasn’t a three-way (Goddamn it I did it again!

A remake of the ’90s classic “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead” is coming to theaters in spring.
Simone Joy Jones, Nicole Richie and June Squibb will lead an ensemble including Jermaine Fowler (“Superior Donuts”), comic Ms. Pat, Olympian Gus Kenworthy, as well as newcomers Donielle Tremaine Hansley, Miles Fowler, Iantha Richardson and Tyriq Withers.
Like the 1991 film, “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” follows 17-year-old girl Tanya (Jones), who plans to vacation in Europe with her friends before heading to college in the fall. But her mom (Ms. Pat) decides to go to a wellness retreat in Thailand, so Tanya is forced to stay home with her siblings. When — as the title suggests — their elderly babysitter (Squibb) unexpectedly dies, Tayna gets a job working for an ambitious woman named Rose (Ritchie). As she juggles work, family and a complicated romance, Tanya navigates adulthood at the cost of her last summer of freedom.

Beginning with indie dramas like The Canyons, she then signed a deal with Netflix to produce and star in a series of films for the streaming service. It began with seasonal romcom Falling For Christmas, which was released in 2022.
Irish Wish is Lohan’s newest film produced under the deal, the synopsis reads as follows:
When the love of her life gets engaged to her best friend, Maddie (Lindsay Lohan) puts her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland.

Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

The 1991 black comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead has become a cult classic over the years, and we first heard rumblings about a modern day remake back in 2020.
Deadline had reported at the time that a “diverse remake” of the ’90s movie was in the works from Treehouse Pictures, said to be a “present-day retelling centered on a Black family.”
In that original May 2020 report, Deadline noted that Bille Woodruff was attached to direct a script written by Chuck Hayward (“Dear White People,” “WandaVision”), with the studio teasing a “new interpretation that is as funny and outrageous as the original but also smart and connected to the world today.”
So what’s the latest on the Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead remake? Well, an official listing from the MPA this week reveals that the upcoming film is rated “R,” which comes as a bit of a surprise considering...

We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Napoleon Bonaparte fanatics, I have some very bad news for you. And for you non-fanatics, I've got some delicate explaining to do.
As you hopefully learned in school, Napoleon was one of the greatest military strategists in world history. He scored decisive victories against the massive Russian and Austrian militaries at Austerlitz in 1805, and served as Emperor of the French twice for a combined 11 years. His brilliance has been analyzed in countless books and dramatized in many movies (from Sergei Bondarchuk's masterful "War and Peace" to Stephen Herek's equally masterful "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure").
He was a fascinating man, and, ultimately, hubristic. He suffered a severe setback when he invaded Russia in 1812, and famously endured his final comeuppance at Waterloo, which resulted in the British exiling him to the island of Saint Helena where he died at the age of 51.
His life will once again be explored on...

The plot of the movie follows four small alien creatures, which were accidentally brought to Earth from their home planet by a space probe, as they wreak havoc on a rural Kansas town while being pursued by an intergalactic bounty hunter. Along the way, they meet up with Charlie (Grimes), his brother Brad (Billy Zane) and the local police chief (Walsh). The critters must evade capture and find a way back home before their appetite for destruction leaves the town in ruins.
The special effects used for the Critters range from puppetry to robotics. They have been described as “fuzzy rodents with razor-sharp teeth and an appetite for human flesh”. Although initially thought of as evil creatures that only wanted to cause mayhem and harm people,...

Stephen Herek's 1989 time travel comedy "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" was one of the stranger hits of its decade. The film followed two affable but none-too-bright teenager layabouts from San Dimas, California (site of the water park Raging Waters). Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are flunking out of school, having spent most of their free time focusing on their rock band Wyld Stallyns. If they cannot pass an upcoming history exam, they will be split up and their band will be abandoned. This, it turns out, would be disastrous for the entire planet, as Bill and Ted's music is destined, in the distant future, to usher in a Roddenberian sci-fi utopia.
A time traveler from the 27th century name Rufus (George Carlin) appears to them, explains their role in history, and bequeaths to them his time machine, a device that looks like an ordinary phone booth. Bill...

Netflix’s list of films premiering on the streaming service in 2023 isn’t nearly as long as their ambitious 2022 film slate. Yet even with a slimmed-down slate, the lineup of movies arriving this year is impressive and checks off nearly every genre.
The streamer will be dipping back into familiar territory with sequels to Murder Mystery and Extraction. Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, and David Yates’ The Pain Hustlers will premiere this year, as will the film continuation of Luther starring Idris Elba. And two romantic comedies with big-name casts made their way into the lineup: Your Place or Mine (Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon) and A Family Affair.
Netflix’s announcement of their 2023 film slate was accompanied by a trailer showcasing 16 titles including You People, The Mother, Heart of Stone, The Killer, and Leo.

Netflix has unveiled its 2023 feature film slate, consisting of 49 titles.
The streamer’s feature slate has slimmed down significantly from 2022, when 86 films were announced. It should also be noted that nine of the films on today’s list were originally set for release as part of last year’s lineup. Those titles are Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man, Jennifer Lopez actioner The Mother, George C. Wolfe’s civil rights drama Rustin, John Ridley’s Shirley, the Adam Sandler vehicle Spaceman, the Jamie Foxx-starring They Cloned Tyrone, the starry comedy We Have a Ghost, Kenya Barris’ first feature You People and South Korea’s Jung_E.
In addition to several of those titles, Netflix has revealed premiere dates for works by such acclaimed filmmakers as David Fincher (The Killer), Zack Snyder (Rebel Moon), David Yates (Pain Hustlers) and F. Gary Gray (Lift) and by TV titans like...

Peaceful coexistence between theaters and home platforms, and the latter showing more interest in awards-elevated titles, stand out as themes this week in VOD play. Throw in signs that Nicolas Cage, always a draw for home-oriented feature films, is as strong as ever, and two unheralded titles standing out at Netflix above higher-profile originals, and the result is several interesting developments this week.
In its second week of home video play, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/19.99), released in theaters just over a month ago, repeats as #1 on all three VOD charts we follow. In the meantime, the film gained six percent this weekend in theaters, crossed the 100 million mark, showing signs that concurrent availability does little harm, at least to a family title.

Typically, Hollywood rewards sequels that are more or less similar -- if not complete retreads -- of the original. Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters 2" is, beat for beat, very similar to his "Ghostbusters." James Cameron's "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" has the exact same premise as his "The Terminator." A short span of brainstorming can produce myriad other examples.
As such, it's something of a minor miracle that Pete Hewitt's "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" is as bonkers as it is, and its predecessor was already plenty wild. In the previous film, Stephen Herek's "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" (1989), the title characters were given a time-traveling phone booth from the future so that they may kidnap various historical figures and present them as their high school history final. If they failed, they would flunk out of history, be separated into different schools, and they'd have to break up their band Wyld Stallyns.

In 1989 audiences were introduced to two of the most loveable dimwits the world had ever seen in the form of Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and "Ted" Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves). Along with them came some of the best catchphrases to ever hit the silver screen. The film was "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," and it spawned two sequels; "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" in 1991 and "Bill & Ted Face the Music" in 2020.
The premise takes a little explanation if you haven't seen it. (Please remedy that right now.) High school students Bill and Ted are best buddies, and they're super dopey but sweet. One would assume these guys would grow up to do nothing but smoke weed in their parents' basements, but friends, they're going to save humanity. In the year 2688, the world became a utopia, based on the music from Bill and Ted's band Wyld Stallyns. To...

Dog Gone is a movie directed by Stephen Herek starring Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. It is based on a book by Pauls Toutonghi.
A tv style saccharine movie with all the sickly sweet elements to delight the more family oriented viewers and create one or more ulcers for reviewers: full of clichés, easy, schematic and totally formulaic.
Storyline
A guy whose girlfriend has just dumped, gets a new friend, Gonker, with which, I guarantee, he manages a longer and more sincere relationship. The problem happens when he loses his dear friend and the guy will do everything he can to reunite with his friend… aided by his father, who has just arrived on his graduation day.

While younger audiences may associate Keanu Reeves first and foremost with the "John Wick" movies and, in general, for playing silent, serious badasses who know kung fu and are highly skilled at shooting people in the head, he is also a pretty great comedic actor. Be it with his role in "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run," where he plays a (literal) wise sage, or with his cameo as "himself" in "Always Be My Maybe," Reeves has continued to deliver his fair share of laughs in-between his outings as Mr. Wick.
Of course, Reeves' best and most well-known comedic role is undoubtedly that of Ted "Theodore" Logan in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" and its sequels, one of the greatest sci-fi comedy trilogies there are, particularly sci-fi comedy trilogies involving time-travel. As silly as they are endearing, the "Bill & Ted" films are full to the brim with great caricatures of historical figures,...

Who doesn’t love a heart-warming pet story? Rob Lowe stars as the dad in the father-son story of their search for their lost dog, Gonker. The trailer for the Netflix film finds its way online and features a journey through the wilderness as they encounter various colorful characters like tough bikers, news reporters interested in their story, and new-age hippies. Usually, films like these showcase the viewpoint from the dog’s perspective as the canine usually encounters a number of obstacles through their adventure in unknown territory, much like 90s family films, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, and Milo & Otis.
The plot synopsis from Netflix reads,
“After a young man and his beloved dog are separated on the Appalachian Trail, he and his father must begin a desperate search to find him before it’s too late. Based on an incredible true story of humanity and everyday heroism.Based...

"We will find that dog." Netflix has revealed the uplifting first official trailer for Dog Gone, a new missing dog movie from filmmaker Stephen Herek. This is based on the true story as covered in the book "Dog Gone: A Lost Pet's Extraordinary Journey and the Family Who Brought Him Home" by Pauls Toutonghi. Kind of like the story from the Disney classic Homeward Bound. Based on the true story of a father and son who repair their fractured relationship during a forced hike to find their beloved lost dog. Saturday, October 10, 1998. Fielding Marshall is hiking on the Appalachian Trail. His beloved dog bolts into the woods. Just like that, he has vanished. And Gonker has Addison's disease. If he's not found in twenty-three days, he will die. A search begins and many get involved in helping find him. The movie version stars Rob Lowe, Johnny Berchtold, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and Nick Peine.

Exclusive: Tyra Banks (America’s Next Top Model) has signed on for a role in Treehouse Pictures’ remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, which is heading into production in Los Angeles in July.
The original 1991 film, from director Stephen Herek, follows Sue Ellen “Swell” Crandell (Christina Applegate), a 17-year-old forced to take care of her four younger siblings after the babysitter hired by her mother dies while mom’s out of town. While the Warner Bros comedy also starring Joanna Cassidy, Keith Coogan, John Getz and Josh Charles didn’t land as a major hit, either critically or commercially, it has fostered a cult following in the decades since.
Treehouse’s remake is billed as a present-day retelling centered on a Black family. Banks will play Cassidy’s character Rose, a fashion executive at General Apparel West, who takes a chance on Swell by hiring her as an executive assistant.

Stephen Herek's time travel comedy "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" became a hit in February of 1989, attended by scads of kids charmed by the surfer-dude, innocuous-metal-loving title characters played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, as well as the film's bonkers story about a high-tech flying phone booth that can take Bill and Ted to meet history's great figures. James Cameron’s Spider-Man. Kind of has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Well, unlike the fictional James Cameron’s Aquaman–of which only a few fleeting seconds exist in the universe of the long-defunct HBO series Entourage–a Spider-Man movie written and directed by the legendary filmmaker almost came to pass in the early 1990s.
But like so many superhero and comics-based projects during that time–a relative Dark Ages for the genre–Cameron’s vision for the webslinging high school student never swung into theaters.
Almost all of it was down to legal issues surrounding the rights to Spider-Man, which kept him off the screen for years. But a glance through the “scriptment” that Cameron worked up–a detailed treatment outlining the story, characters, and even passages of dialogue–indicates that Cameron’s conception of the character and his mythos was very faithful in its own way.

On a Labor Day weekend when “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” exploded to a record $90 million initial four- day gross, Disney also expanded Premium VOD platforms for its $100 million-plus box office “Jungle Cruise” ($29.99). As with other PVOD titles, it’s making a strong debut on multiple charts after an initial Disney+ home exclusive.
“Jungle Cruise” leads at Vudu, which favors higher-priced titles with its revenue tally. Among transactional charts, iTunes has it as #3, with GooglePlay placing it at #5. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$5.99) repeats at #1 at both iTunes and Google, and at #5 is the highest non-pvod films at Vudu. All of this reinforces that Disney can maximize returns from multiple outlets even as films still do well in theaters.
“Don’t Breathe 2” (Sony/$19.99), a surprise PVOD release after three weeks in theaters, is #2 at Vudu, #3 at iTunes, and #5 at GooglePlay. The film fell a modest 18 percent in...

Since Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland grabbed handfuls of eat me cake to become a ginormous box office smash, Disney have really started their live-action remake train rolling. It seems that with each passing year we have armfuls of new live-action remakes/reboots/prequels/sequels of their animated classics being primed for release. Thus far the results have been consistently enjoyable, if varying, with the finest probably being Jon Favreau’s incredible The Jungle Book in 2016. But, shockingly, their latest offering, Cruella, just might be the best since that point.
Much like Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent, you might say it was a somewhat challenging task to take one of Disney’s nastiest and most iconic villains and make a film about her origins. Naturally people will struggle to have sympathy for an attempted puppy killing fashion magnate, but Craig Gillespie’s very very pleasant surprise Cruella, does something a little different with the material.

Specifically, it was the scene where the Critters, who had already been terrorizing the Brown family, were standing on the doorstep of the family’s home talking in their guttural language with subtitles translating for the audience…until one of them is blown to gooey bits by a shotgun blast (wielded by none other than E.T. mom Dee Wallace), and the other lets out a subtitled “Fuck.”
“It totally destroyed the audience,” Harvey recalls. “They just howled. We lost the next scene because they were laughing so hard and I thought: ‘Okay, this is probably going to work.’”
It had already taken a lot of work for Critters to get this far.

Eddie Van Halen, the guitar legend who died Tuesday at 65, has received tributes from countless rockers and celebrities — including the fictional Wyld Stallyns from “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”
“Bill & Ted” writer Ed Solomon said that he and co-writer Chris Matheson desperately wanted Van Halen to make a cameo of some kind in this year’s sequel “Bill & Ted Face the Music” and that his music greatly shaped the narrative direction of the film.
“Super sad to hear about the passing of Eddie Van Halen. He was a big influence on Chris and me as we were writing ‘Bill & Ted.’ In fact, when director Stephen Herek was reading the script he got three pages in, stopped, put on ‘1984’ and resumed. We wanted the movie to be a cinematic ‘Jump,'” Solomon wrote on Twitter. “We tried to get him to do something — anything — in ‘Face the Music,’ but they...

Songs from an Empty Room: Parisot Resurrects Beloved Slackers for Nostalgic Trilogy Capper
There aren’t any nonsensical yet iconic duos from 1990s pop cinema who were fashioned out of sillier frivolity than the eponymous Bill and Ted, here at last returning nineteen years after their last on-screen appearance with the long-gestating Bill & Ted Face the Music. Sure, there was Wayne and Garth, or Lloyd and Harry, both duos who also scored sequels (though Wayne’s World 3 has yet to transport itself through the endlessly recycling Hollywood machine), but even all of them had, arguably, more narrative fluffing than the time travel cavorting of the Southern Cali songsters born from Stephen Herek’s 1989 Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and then again in Peter Hewitt’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991).…...
