Netflix is staying in business with Dragon, renewing its father-son comedy Unstable for an eight-episode second season, TVLine has learned.
Unstable stars Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, a “universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place,” per Netflix’s official logline. To complicate matters further, Dragon is in an “emotional free-fall,” and his only hope may rest in his polar-opposite son Jackson Dragon (played by Lowe’s real-life son John Owen Lowe).

Unstable, the Netflix comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, is heading back into production for its second season with a new showrunner.
Andrew Gurland, creator of FX’s Married, has replaced Victor Fresco as showrunner for the second season of the series after its renewal by Netflix for another eight episodes.
Production will begin later this month after it was interrupted by the writers strike back in May. Production on the second season started in late March and shut down at the start of May.
Unstable follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster. It is inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often humorously trolls his dad.

“Privilege comes with sacrifice” says one character to another in “Pledge” — exactly the kind of noble sentiment authority figures always voice to hush the protests of those about to be sacrificed. This third feature for director Daniel Robbins is no delicate flower of cinematic art, but a lean and mean shocker that tells its tale of collegiate hazing run amuck with brute efficiency. IFC Midnight gave the quasi-horror meller a limited theatrical run simultaneous with its VOD launch on Jan. 11.

In 1993, after not being accepted into any major film festival of the time, such as Sundance, filmmaker Todd Phillips personally toured the U.S. and Europe with his first documentary film, Hated: Gg Allin & The Murder Junkies. Following this experience, Phillips partnered up with fellow filmmaker Andrew Gurland to launch several initiatives to help small, challenging and often controversial films connect with audiences.
One of those initiatives was the first ever New York Underground Film and Video Festival, which was held at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City on March 18-20, 1994.
The term “underground film” was first used to describe the experimental film scene in 1961 by filmmaker and film theorist Stan Vanderbeek. Using “underground film” to describe the avant-garde cinema remained popular throughout the ’60s, then lost popularity in the ’70s as terms like “structural film” came into existence. “Underground film” ultimately regained some of its mojo...

Who doesn’t enjoy a little Euripides with their breakfast cereal or, in this case, with their unrelenting celluloid exploration of sadistic, on-campus initiations? Of course, hazing has been ceaselessly explored in the news each time there’s a new frat and in previous efforts such as Todd Phillips and Andrew Gurland’s documentary Frat House (1998) and John Landis’ comedy Animal House (1978). Even the Lifetime channel (The Haunting of Sorority Row (2007)) and one of this year’s best movies (Prof. Marston and the Wonder Women) have taken out their paddles, exploring the female side of these rituals. However, seldom has Dionysus and the Bacchae been incorporated into the subject matter.
(Please note that Tennessee Williams was inspired by the same source material for Suddenly Last Summer, a tale of lobotomies, cannibalism, and repressed homosexuality. Sounds very much like a fraternity initiation in the end, doesn’t it?) Indeed, few films,...

Former wrestler-turned-superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is circling back to his formative years in the ring for his latest project. Variety has learned that Johnson has agreed terms to develop a comedy series based on his early wrestling career, and his relationship with former WWE head writer, Brian Gewirtz.
The outlet goes on to reveal that Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions will foster the TV project, partnering with Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez banner. Meanwhile, Andrew Gurland (Married) has been tapped to pen the pilot.
Pitched as a “behind-the-scenes look at a fictional professional wrestling outfit,” the as-yet-untitled series chronicles the working partnership between both Johnson and Gewirtz, who were described as having a “one-of-a-kind odd couple relationship” during the early days of WWE.
No word yet on when the single-cam, hour-long dramedy will fire up production, but you can check in on Johnson’s official Instagram message, below.

Dwayne Johnson is in the process of developing a wrestling comedy series for Fox that will take the actor back to the early days of his career as a wrestler. Will Ferrell has joined the project as a producer, and the series will be based on the real life experiences of Johnson and former WWE head writer Brian Gerwitz. According to Variety:
The series offers a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional professional wrestling outfit and chronicles the one-of-a-kind odd couple relationship that develops between a charismatic young character, like the The Rock, and a painfully awkward comedy writer new to the world of wrestling. A fish-out-of-water among all of these alpha males, this beta former sitcom writer needs as much help as he can get navigating the extremely passionate, sometimes crazy and always unpredictable world of professional wrestling.
This really does sound like it could be a hilariously fun series.

There is something inherently frustrating about the prospect of university life. As a college student, you can feel as if you’re stuck in limbo. You’re obviously no longer a child as sex, drugs and alcohol pervade your everyday world, yet you’re not really an adult — totally free of the burdens of the 9-to-5 rat race for at least a few more years. A feeling of unease can fall over you, as there’s always a kegger or a party to attend while lovers change partners more often than bed-sheets.
Everybody Wants Some!!, the long-awaited spiritual sequel to Richard Linklater‘s classic comedy Dazed & Confused is now out in theaters. In the film, a college freshman (Blake Jenner) arrives at school to find that his new baseball teammates are an out-of-control, alcohol-fueled army of irresponsible party-dudes.
To celebrate, we compiled ten of the finest college movies, all ranging wildly in style and tone.

When "Married" premiered last year, it got a lot of attention for its top-notch cast, and deservedly so. Judy Greer, Nat Faxon, Paul Reiser, Jenny Slate and Brett Gelman all deserve their time in the spotlight, and boy did they get it during Season 1. But, a year later and with a full season already done, focus has shifted to what exactly it is that makes "Married" so unique in a TV world filed with so many married couples. Sure, the FX comedy fits the mold of what's come before, but "Married" is so much more than that. Why? Because of creator Andrew Gurland. It's harder to explain what makes the FX comedy standout in a short, introductory summary, so instead let's let Gurland — a former independent filmmaker who won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 1998 — tell you himself. It’s a great day for FX fans – the network just announced that it has renewed critical darling comedies You’re the Worst and Married for expanded second seasons, which will premiere next summer.
The two shows, both raw and raunchy looks at modern relationships, have been consistently lauded by critics, though neither pulled in huge ratings for FX. As part of the renewal decision, and an indication that the network will take a different tack with advertising the shows next year, You’re the Worst will move to sister channel Fxx for its sophomore run, while Married will remain on FX. Both second seasons will run for 13 episodes, as opposed to this year’s ten.
Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, the network’s Presidents of Original Programming, released an official statement, saying:
“We love these shows and the creative visions of Andrew Gurland of Married and Stephen Falk of You’re the Worst.

Fox has put in development, Ball & Chain, a drama written/executive produced by Peter Ocko (Fairly Legal) and executive produced by Steve McPherson through Lionsgate TV. The project, which falls under McPherson’s first-look deals at Fox and Lionsgate, centers on two ex-operatives with screwed up personal lives who are set up by their intelligence agency to become romantically entangled and run missions as a team. Ocko, repped by Vision Art, has comedy pilot Divide and Conquer at USA. Fox also has bought a comedy project from Andrew Gurland and Justin Hurwitz, creators of the network’s half-hour pilot The Gabriels last season. Like The Gabriels, the new project, also produced by 20th TV, is based on Hurwitz’s life, but instead of his childhood, it involves his early adulthood. It centers on a brother and sister who develop an adult relationship that wreaks havoc on everyone else around them.

Whether she's breaking our hearts in The Descendants or cracking us up on Arrested Development or Archer, we can't get enough of Judy Greer. And it seems we're not alone. The Wrap reports four-time Academy Award-nominated writer-director Jason Reitman wants Greer for his next dark comedy Men, Women & Children, which is based on the novel by Chad Kultgen. But some scheduling issues have emerged because Greer is so in-demand. See, Greer is already set to star opposite Nat Faxon in a pilot that The Last Exorcism co-writer Andrew Gurland pitched to FX. That project, which has the pair playing a married couple dabbling in an open marriage arrangement, has Greer's first refusal, meaning she's committed to it over any other project. If the TV network picks up the pilot--which sources say is likely--it will be a challenge to fit Men, Women & Children into her schedule. But as Reitman and Greer...

Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner and Rosemarie DeWitt are already cast, but there are still gaps on the call sheet of Jason Reitman's Men, Women And Children. If the stars align, it looks like Judy Greer will be the next actor to join the production. The film, Reitman's next following the just-premiered Labor Day, is based on the novel by Chad Kultgen. It involves junior high school pupils and their parents negotiating the minefields of social networking and the more "adult" outposts of the internet.Greer, if she signs on, will be playing the rather odd-sounding role of Joan Clint who, rather than taking the protective-parent stance, actually "posts alluring photos of her daughter online". Whether she's able to join the film, however, seems to depend on the status of Andrew Gurland's currently untitled drama show for the FX channel, of which Greer is a part. The pilot looks...

Judy Greer is in talks to join the cast of “Men, Women & Children,” the next movie from writer-director Jason Reitman, several individuals familiar with the project told TheWrap. Greer’s negotiations have been complicated by the status of Andrew Gurland’s FX pilot, in which Greer will star opposite Nat Faxon. It looks like FX is going to pick up the pilot, according to one of those individuals, but Greer will still try to fit the movie into her schedule. Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner and Rosemarie DeWitt have already signed on to star in the film, which Reitman co-wrote with Erin Cressida Wilson based on.

FX has given a pilot greenlight to Bigfoot, an animated comedy series based on Graham Roumieu’s faux Bigfoot autobiography graphic novels In Me Own Words, Me Write Book, And I Not Dead. Written by Matt McKenna (American Dad) and executive produced by Seth Rogen, the FX Prods-produced project revolves around Bigfoot, everyone’s favorite crypto-zoological hominid, as a modern-day everyman who struggles with life’s philosophical quandaries as well as his own animalistic tendencies. “This will be the greatest show about an animated Bigfoot ever made,” Rogen said. Executive producing the pilot are McKenna; Point Grey Pictures’ Rogen and Evan Goldberg; Roumieu; Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and Sam Hansen; and Floyd County Prods’ Adam Reed and Matt Thompson. Animation remains a priority for FX, which has been looking to expand its offerings beyond hit Archer and has new animated series Chosen, exec produced by Danny McBride, launching on Fxx.
