There’s no need to make an implication that American filmmakers are failures. That’s not true. Wes Craven, John Carpenter, James Wan, Darren Lynn Bousman, Ti West, and Adam Green are just a few of today’s genre specific visionaries, and they’re delivering the goods.
That said, foreign filmmakers seem to be on an entirely different page.
Perhaps foreign directors simply ignore American productions. That could potentially be a logical line of thought. Think for yourself, don’t follow in already established practice. Perhaps these guys just work with their own vision, refusing to allow any studio to impose. Or, perhaps, these guys around the world, who don’t necessarily leap into horror binges, are capable of manufacturing entirely new ideas.
I’m not certain of the recipe, but I know it works. It works especially well with Norwegian filmmakers, who constantly release pics so far superior to...

The former child actor's pizza-themed Velvet Underground tribute band is just the latest in his long line of musical endeavours. Here's a rundown of the finest moments
• Macaulay Culkin forms pizza-themed Velvet Underground tribute band
There's an old adage that "all actors secretly want to be rock stars, and all rock stars wish they could act". I say "an old adage", what I actually mean is I heard it once and wanted to reference it but couldn't find the quote. This is presumably how all aphorisms are born.
Regardless, examples of the transition are numerous: Russell Crowe has his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, for which you can create your own rhyming slang joke; Joe Pesci once recorded a rap track, which is every bit what you're imagining it's like; and Billy Bob Thornton has released at least four LPs specifically targeted at a demographic of vest and tobacco-spitting enthusiasts.

On Tuesday, June 11, Walt Disney Animation Studios filmmakers Lauren MacMullan, Dorothy McKim, Adam Green and Disney legendary animator Eric Goldberg presented the world debut of Mickey Mouse in “Get A Horse!” at the Annecy Animation Festival in France.
Walt Disney Animation Studios presented a never-before-seen short starring the one and only Mickey Mouse in “Get A Horse!”
Featuring Walt Disney himself as the voice of Mickey Mouse, this black-and-white, hand-drawn short follows Mickey, his favorite gal pal Minnie Mouse and their friends Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow as they delight in a musical wagon ride – until Peg-Leg Pete shows up and tries to run them off the road.

Singing "Kokomo," arguing with the paparazzi, and brandishing fingernails painted in wild colors, Macaulay Caulkin has found his way back into our lives. And we're so happy to have him here.
We haven't seen him on the big screen since 2007's "Sex and Breakfast," which was a film about...er (awkwardly tugging on imaginary shirt collar). Okay fine, we missed that one. But according to IMDb, it was a sexy romp-of-a-flick with doc-prescribed couple swapping. Oh Thomas J!
Of course the Macaulay we all remember is the one who got left home alone (and later ditched in New York), the one who was friends with Vada Sultenfuss and had a horrible bee allergy, and the lil' dude who was the richest kid in the world. In real life, he was friends with Michael Jackson and Bubbles the chimp. Those were the days...

Macaulay Culkin reportedly launched himself at a photographer on Tuesday morning (16.04.13). The 32-year-old actor and DJ - who was recently mistaken for a homeless man in London - allegedly attempted to start a fight with the paparazzo as he left The Haunt nightclub in Brighton 'cursing and screaming'. Macaulay, who dated actress Mila Kunis for eight years until January 2011, was held back by members of his entourage and eventually jumped into a van, which took him back to the nearby Ibis hotel at approximately 1.30am. According to the MailOnline.com, the former 'Home Alone' child star, who is visiting his pals Adam Green and Binki Shapiro during their tour in England, also yelled, 'Go to hell', at the photographer...

Macaulay Culkin just pulled a Justin Bieber. The former child star was caught cursing and screaming at photographers after leaving The Haunt nightclub in Brighton, U.K., where he sang with pal Adam Green, who was putting on a concert at the popular hot spot. According to a source on the scene, Culkin was less than pleased with paps after the performance and proceeded to launch himself at a paparazzo upon exiting the club around 1 a.m. while attacking the shutterbug and telling him to go to hell. And no, he was not heard saying, "You guys give up? Or ya thirsty for more?" Home Alone jokes aside, there's no word yet as to what sparked the shutterbug smackdown, but Culkin seemed...

Former child star Macaulay Culkin surprised concertgoers at an Adam Green show in Bristol, England earlier this week, when he joined the singer in a duet cover of the Beach Boys' 1988 hit "Kokomo."
In video footage of the duet that was uploaded to YouTube on April 11, the 32-year-old "Home Alone" star is seen taking the stage while wearing sunglasses and a small ponytail, and it appeared as though he had a pretty good time singing along.
Culkin and the former Moldy Peaches frontman are good friends, and it's not the first time they've worked together either. Zap2It notes that Culkin appeared in Green's experimental iPhone movie "The Wrong Ferrari," and the pair also performed a cover of Scorpion’s "Wind of Change," at the Berlin Festival in 2010.

Macaulay Culkin can act, but can he sing? The former child star proved that he can indeed when he took to the stage of an Adam Green concert in the UK.
As can be seen in the above video, Culkin and Green sing a rousing rendition of The Beach Boys' hit "Kokomo." The former "Home Alone" star looked a bit different than we usually see him, sporting a ponytail and sunglasses. This isn't the first time that he and Green, who is formerly of The Moldy Peaches, have teamed up together on stage.
When Green hit the Berlin Festival in 2010, he and Culkin did a duet of Scorpion's "Wind of Change," which can be watched here. He also starred in Green's 2011 iPhone movie "The Wrong Ferrari." What do you think of Culkin's take on the Beach Boys classic?...

This week marked the return of Sylvester Stallone in the action flick "Bullet to the Head." The movie, based on the graphic novel of the same name, overflowed with pointless violence and predictable, "tough guy" moments. Those pitfalls combined with a bland performance from Stallone resulted in some pretty rough reviews for the movie. Critics also felt "Warm Bodies" lacked the emotion necessary to allow viewers to connect to the story, and the cinematic train wreck that is "Movie 43" pulled some of the worst ratings this year.
In music, the Local Natives' "Hummingbird" lost points for a lack of originality. Most critics felt the album was void of lyrical depth or the energy found in the group's previous albums. "Opposites," Biffy Clyro's two disc release, was equal parts weak and engaging. Finally, Adam Green's "Adam Green & Binki Shapiro" received negative marks for being a dull attempt at a duets album.

This month, our community collectively said goodbye for a while to the flagship Alamo Drafthouse location and home of press screenings, special events, festivals like SXSW and aGLIFF Polari, and the two most dear in my heart: Butt-Numb-a-Thon and Fantastic Fest.
I have countless memories of this place, beginning with my first screening there eight years ago: Robin Williams in The Big White, the first screening of the first Fantastic Fest in 2005. I've likely seen more movies in this cinemaplex than in all the other theaters I've visited in my life combined. Certainly more than I dare attempt to count, though an average of 30 films each year for Fantastic Fest plus the five 24-hour Butt-Numb-a-Thons would equal roughly 600 hours, or 25 solid days of films watched there before we even started on SXSW, aGLIFF or any of the other shows.
No single word or phrase is sufficient to capture the significance of this place.

Well Dreaddies, it's that time again. Time to reflect on the year that's passed and look ahead to the future. It's time for the final Tip of the Scalpel for 2012. Today we celebrate a certain guy that comes and visits kids this time of the year... but not the big, jolly one you're thinking of.
If you're reading this, I'm assuming we all made it through the diabolical 12/21/12 scare. I certainly hope that's the case. As I'm writing this a few days before the impending date, I can't help but think what a waste of time this might be as I could be spending these precious few moments of safety hoarding canned goods or setting up a contraption in my backyard to trap rainwater for drinking. But let's hope for the best... back to The Scalpel!

Ah, yes, it is now the time of the year when horror movies finally get their due. All year round, the horror community keeps doing what they love but it isn’t until October that the world of gore is universally accepted. Soon you hear about your Aunt getting scared because she finally saw Insidious or your cousin texts you to see if you want to check out Sinister with them. Scary movies start trending and for one month out of the year, it’s Ok to post gory images on your Facebook wall (I do it all year because fuck those people, right?).

It's hard to believe we're already up to the fourth episode of Travel Channel's new show "Paranormal Paparazzi" but time flies when you're surrounded by spirits, UFO's, teen exorcists, and buck naked ghost hunting!
This new sliver of spooky comes to us from the mind of "Ghost Adventures'" Zak Bagans, who serves as executive producer on the series, and is hosted by paranormal researcher, journalist, and personality Aaron Sagers (interview).
Check out three sneak peek videos of this week's episode below. The Travel Channel television show we are a part of, "Paranormal Paparazzi," airs October 12, at 4pm Pt/7pm Et.

It's Halloween, and that means there's plenty of horror related cinephile goodness coming throughout the month. Kicking off the spooky season is a bit of horror themed hilarity taking aim at the aptly named slasher classic Halloween. Fans will get a chance to see the film in theaters again later this month, but before that, filmmaker Adam Green has answered one of the plaguing questions from the original film. While it doesn't seem like a big deal that the masked killer Michael Myers steals a car and drives to Haddonfield, one of the issues with that plot point is brought up by Dr. Loomis. If Myers has been locked up in the mental institution this whole time, how the hell did he learn how to drive? A "deleted scene" answers our question. Here's Adam Green's "deleted scene" from Halloween, brought to our attention by Bleeding Cool: As a bonus...

John Carpenter’s Halloween is one of the greatest horror films ever made, an intense and visceral experience that just gets better with age. However, there’s at least one part of the film that’s a bit hard to swallow. In an early scene mass murderer Michael Myers escapes from the Smith’s Grove Sanitarium by commandeering a car and driving off into the night. That’s not so odd – until you realize Myers has been at Smith’s Grove for most of his life and never learned how to drive. Filmmaker Adam Green has been kind enough to fix this minor flaw by shooting his very own “deleted scene” for Carpenter’s film – a sequence that shows how Michael learned to operate an automobile. Michael’s driving test goes...

Last week we asked Film Junk readers to pick the most talented horror director to arrive on the scene within the past decade. In the end, it was Eli Roth who came out on top with nearly 25% of the votes. While he may not be so "new" at this point, in terms of becoming the new face of horror, I think that is a fair assessment. Up and comer Ti West wasn't far off, however, taking 21% of the votes, followed by U.K. gore hound Neil Marshall. Alexandre Aja and Rob Zombie rounded out the top 5. I was a little surprised that Lucky McKee didn't rank higher since he has a lot of supporters within the horror community, but I suppose he is still largely unknown to more casual genre fans. Darren Lynn Bousman finished way down at the bottom of the list, despite having directed perhaps the most movies out of anyone here.

This summer had been filled with reports about Macaulay Culkin and the possibility of his drug addiction because of his frail and very skeletal look. After all these rumors resurfaces, we just spotted him looking healthier than ever.
It's looking like he is very much back in the game. He looks better than usual while planning his latest venture that will be called Three Men and a Baby. This will be a collection of different artworks from his collaboration with his friends from the band Moldy Peaches, Toby Godshank and Adam Green.
According to the 32 year old Home Alone actor, their first exhibit will be featured in Le Poisson Rouge in New York on the 13th of September.

New York, Sep 11: "Home Alone" star Macaulay Culkin is preparing to set up his first art show.
Culkin has been busy making paintings with his musician friend Adam Green and Toby Goodshank at his New York City home this summer, and now the group is to put its works on display at the Le Poisson Rouge Thursday, reports dailystar.co.uk.
The collection, entitled Leisure Inferno, will feature a variety of collages, as well as renderings.

Macaulay Culkin's creative juices have been flowing. Though he hasn't been in front of the camera for awhile, the 32-year-old actor has been busy for the last year with a different type of art—and next week, he'll have an exhibit to show off the fruits of his impromptu passion project. "We cleared out everything, laid down plastic and went a little nuts at the art supply store," Culkin says in a video he shot with the rest of Three Men and a Baby, the art collective he has formed with pals Adam Green and Toby Goodshank (both of Moldy Peaches fame). The friends have been using Culkin's New York City pad as a studio and will be holding their first show, "Leisure Inferno,"...

In case you're not hip to the goings-on of one Macaulay Culkin, take note that he's now part of a group (band?) of painters called 3Mb Collective, featuring Culkin, Toby Goodshank and Adam Green (formerly of the Moldy Peaches). Together the three are creating a bunch of bizarre art (see our personal favorite above, featuring He-Man sketching a naked Jerry Seinfeld and Kramer against a Wheel of Fortune backdrop), most of it set to debut at their first gallery exhibit on September 13 at the Gallery at Lpr (Le Poisson Rouge). It's called "Leisure Inferno" and it'll run through December 15. You can find more info here; check out a video of the trio discussing their art below. [via Buzzfeed]

Last year, I created a post to see what films might show up at Fantastic Fest. Out of the 18 films I listed only 7 were correct. Not a great percentage but not too bad either. Let’s see if we can do this a bit better this year.
I have asked Michael Haffner, my podcast co-host & Managing Editor, who attended his first Fantastic Fest last year to contribute some of his picks as well. The first wave of Fantastic Fest 2012 is supposed to be officially announced tomorrow, July 27th.
Andy’s Picks
I can already tell you that my picks for films playing Fantastic Fest mainly focus on North American produced cinema. Fantastic Fest is a very eclectic mix of different countries and regions. There is no way I can pinpoint every film that would play, but I will give you my reasons on why I think certain films will play.

This past weekend, Adam Green of the now defunct The Moldy Peaches presented his second art show, "Cartoon and Complaint," for a private reception at Dustin Yellin's newly opened Intercourse studio in Red Hook.
Saturday's guests included Green's adorable mother who proudly donned an Adam Green t-shirt, Macaulay Culkin (who starred in Green's iPhone flick "The Wrong Ferrari"), close friends and fellow artists who gathered to view the show, while enjoying some kegs and sausage outside the remarkable space.
Yellin recently purchased the massive 24,000-square foot, Civil War-era warehouse for $3.7 million with hopes to create a "utopian art center." Green's opening reception marks Intercourse's first official show.
Green: How did you get connected to Intercourse?
Huffpostny: I've known Dustin for awhile, long before he opened up the space. I think Intercourse has the potential to be kind of like a junior MoMa PS1 with artists in residence, a music studio,...

Love is in the air! That's right, gorehounds; it's that time of year again. Valentine's Day is here, and we've got a special treat just for you. There has certainly been no shortage of terrifying couples, obsessions and forbidden loves in fright films over the years. Today we bring you our Top 10 Greatest Horrific Couples.
We're not talking about the hero who battles the monster and saves the helpless girl at the end. That's not going to make this list. We're talking about the couples that were somehow uniquely intertwined within a film. Of course first we have our honorable mentions.
We'd have loved to include Leatherface and Stretch from Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 here, but they weren't really a couple as Stretch was just using her womanly wiles to try to escape in one piece. Also, you can't really have a list like this without mentioning Bella Swan and...

In the new wave of horror maestros, right alongside folks like Eli Roth and Adam Green, the name Ti West has to be right there amongst them. The director first made some waves a few years ago as director of Cabin Fever 2, a follow-up to Roth's own film, and one which was so extensively re-edited by the studio that West asked to have his name taken off. That request was denied, but fans...

Screening as the Centerpiece Gala at this year's Nyff, Simon Curtis's My Week with Marilyn is, for Miriam Bale, writing at the L, a "predictable, schlocky first love story about a rangy Eton boy's bildugsroman heartbreak by — here's the twist — Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), while working as Lawrence Olivier's assistant on The Prince and the Showgirl in 1950s London. Williams seems a great actress because there's nothing there to begin with, so any character she plays takes over her body and soul so completely that every role seems a conjuring act. She is particularly suitable, then, for not only reproducing Monroe's reflection accurately, but exactly replicating Monroe's blank 'fuck me' photoshoot face, the look that made Monroe such a hugely fuckable star. This blank canvas for male fantasy will no doubt make Williams a much bigger star, too," but: "The secret star of the film is the Dp Ben Smithard,...

Wow, I almost missed this. As I said in the title to this piece, Creature truly did sneak up from the depths, for me anyway.
I had heard nothing (that I remember) about this flick until I started seeing commercials for it just a few days ago. Usually, studios and producers drop a ton of press a couple of weeks (or more) before these movies open, but Creature started getting the big push just a couple of days before its release tomorrow (September 9), which raises a red flag. Hey, at least it's getting advance press. Sometimes, these flicks get dropped into one theater for one day with no press (for example, Hellraiser: Revelations) before their imminent DVD issuance.
Creature oozes out into the light of day courtesy of director Fred Andrews, who has a fairly extensive background in production design. Andrews co-wrote Creature with Tracy Morse, who has acted, written and directed.

Chicago – “Final Destination 5” may have under-performed a bit this past weekend at the box office but that has nothing to do with the legendary Tony Todd. The horror icon perhaps best-known for playing the title character in “Candyman” but also a major part of the movie and TV landscape for decades breezed through Chicago on the day his new sequel opened. The charming star discussed the longevity of the “Fd” movies, what made him an actor, the future of 3D, and much more.

Todd: I have a good sense of when something is going to be Good.

Adam Green and Joe Lynch (do they really need any introduction in the world of horror at this point?) are collaborating on a new project. They've teamed up for Holliston , a FEARnet original production Green will write and direct. Oh, there's more: Green and Lynch are starring in the series, which is slated to run for six episodes. Described as "Wayne's World meets Saw ", the show is set in Holliston, Massachusetts where Green and Lynch are juggling their aspirations to be filmmakers with life and midnight movie hosting duties they do on a public access channel. Laura Ortiz and Corri English co-star. Holliston will air during FEARnet's Tuesday night "Twisted Comedy" block.

It’s easy to bemoan the state of the horror genre; it’s spun itself into a funk of directors who don’t seem to want to leave the genre and thus just keep producing the same generic slasher or torture films over and over. Every genre needs an infusion of new blood every once in a while, and if that comes from an established director dabbling (a la Danny Boyle) or a rising star making a name for themselves (Adam Green), then great. In the vein of the latter come Jim Mickle and his coming of age film, Stake Land, in a world where America has crumbled into a wasteland of survivor camps and religious extremists fighting against a vampire horde gradually thinning their numbers. Stake Land isn’t about flashy style or big names, it’s a simple road trip horror film that looks fantastic, clips along at a great pace,...
