Starz’s Outlander season seven episode five splits time between Brianna starting work in her new job as Plant Inspector and Jamie, Claire, and Ian’s experiences in Fort Ticonderoga.
The episode begins with Brianna (Sophie Skelton) finding Jemmy and Mandy in the old family graveyard and reminding them it’s not a playground. Jem admits that Mandy wanted to speak to granddad, although no one knows if that’s where he’s buried. Bree agrees it’s possible, and Jem confesses that he built a cairn for Jamie.
It’s too difficult for Bree even to enter the graveyard, so she remains at the gate. She’s not ready to take that step yet.
Bree returns home and holds more of her mom and dad’s letters. Roger (Richard Rankin) joins her, and she explains that the kids visit Jamie...

"Annie" goes back a long way.
John Huston's 1982 musical film version of "Annie" was based on a Broadway show that debuted in Connecticut in 1976. That musical was, in turn, based on the popular newspaper comic strip "Little Orphan Annie" which made its own debut in 1924. Authored by Harold Gray from its start until his death in 1968, "Little Orphan Annie" was a cultural staple for many decades. After Gray's passing, other authors continued the strip's run until its final cancelation in 2010. Gray based "Little Orphan Annie" on a James Whitcomb Riley poem that was first published in 1885. The poem was originally called "The Elf Child," but was later changed to "Little Orphant Annie" (employing a Hoosier dialect on "orphant"). This is all to say, "Annie" has been part of the popular consciousness for over 137 years.

Tonight, NBC will air its sixth live musical production. Following in the footsteps of The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz, Hairspray, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the peacock network will be presenting Annie. Based on Harold Gray's comic strip titled Little Orphan Annie, this musical tells the story of a little orphan with equal measures of pluck and positivity who charms everyone's hearts, despite a next-to-nothing start in New York City in the year 1933.

Emmy Award nominee Bernadette Peters fully supports the casting of young Black actress Celina Smithto lead NBC’s Annie Live!, a musical TV special with Smith portraying little orphan Annie.
“Yes, I think as long as it makes sense, and I think it does,” Peters, who starred in the 1982 film Annie, told Deadline at the Creative Emmy Awards on Sunday. “I think that was a fabulous idea. I think changing casting and making things more diverse is a great idea.” (Watch the video above.)
The Annie character was born in the 1924 comic strip created by Harold Gray as a young white girl with curly red hair, which is how the character was portrayed on Broadway and in the 1982 film.
A 2014 contemporary remake of the 1982 film also titled Annie, cast Quvenzhané Wallis as the titular character. It was the property’s first project to have a Black actress portray the lead.

NBC’s “Annie Live!” has cast Jane Krakowski as Lily St. Regis. Lily is described as the “sassy” and “sticky-fingered” partner of Rooster Hannigan, who is being played by Tituss Burgess.
Yes, it’s an “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” reunion this December on NBC!
The St. Regis role is basically the final major one NBC needed to book. In the story, Lily and Rooster try to pass themselves off as Annie’s parents. They find an ally in their villainy in Miss Hannigan, who will be played in the NBC December special by Taraji P. Henson.
In addition to Henson and the comedy duo of Krakowski and Burgess, Harry Connick Jr. has been cast as Daddy Warbucks, and Nicole Scherzinger as Grace. Following a nationwide search, newcomer Celina Smith was selected to play the titular role of Annie for the NBC version.
Krakowski can certainly sing, and has enjoyed her share of Broadway stage time.

While World War II raged overseas, pop-culture creators on the American home front were in an awkward spot: How could their art help the war effort without becoming dry and preachy? How could they adapt light entertainment to document the anxieties and deprivations of life during wartime? Nowhere was this artistic crisis felt more than in the still-young (and insanely popular) mediums of cartooning and comic strips. Warren Bernard’s gorgeous new collection of rare drawings from the war years, Cartoons for Victory, dives into that strange period. The collection features single-panel editorial cartoons as well as comic strips and advertisements, boasting a high percentage of previously unseen material. There’s wartime work by cartoonists such as Charles Addams (The Addams Family), Harold Gray (Little Orphan Annie), Harvey Kurtzman (Mad magazine), Will Eisner (The Spirit, A Contract with God), as well as many less-known artists of the period. More than...

Harvey Weinstein, who occasionally contributes to Deadline when he has something on his mind that goes beyond business, just asked us to run this op-ed piece to be sure it got seen before the start of the Golden Globes. It first appeared in our sister publication Variety. So here goes:
When I was a college student, it gave me great pleasure to read about politics because it was my passion, along with film and journalism. I used to love reading Herblock cartoons in the Washington Post. And I loved Tom Toles’ cartoons from the Buffalo News (I went to school in Buffalo). Of course, Herblock went on to great success, as did Tom Toles, but they were always an insistent reminder that cartoon and caricature could be great weapons for good, and deterrents to bad.
This preamble hopefully illustrates the humanity and the affection that I think people have for cartoons.

I’m a fossil. I know it. Proof positive: I read the daily newspaper. Not on a pad or tablet or my computer, I go out and actually buy the blamed thing. I read it during breakfast. Yes, I still get a certain percentage of my news from the computer and/or Jon Stewart and The Daily Show but I like having the physical newspaper, just as I prefer actual books to an e-reader. If I don’t get to read the paper, I get cranky. Or crankier.
I think I got that from my father, Joel W. Ostrander Sr. He was always the first up in the morning but, during my high school years, I was up second. We’d both be at breakfast and we would read the newspaper. I’d get the sections he was done with; that’s where I learned to be possessive about my newspaper.

The Annie mythos — culled from various versions, from an 1885 poem by James Whitcomb Riley to the Harold Gray-crafted syndicated comic strip to the beloved 1977 Broadway musical and its subsequent 1982 film adaptation — has evolved quite spectacularly over the years. Once a character in a poem that is straight up about goblins, Annie is now the adorable, plucky heroine of a feel-good musical about finding your own family (and copious amounts of cash) in the most unexpected of places. Still, the problem with Annie is that, jazzy song-and-dance sequences aside, the story itself is almost too wrenching to be believed. At least, that’s the problem with Will Gluck‘s Annie, which insists on foisting still more troubles on our pint-sized leading lady while also involving a weirdly adult subplot about corporate invasions of privacy. Isn’t being a goddamn orphan bad enough? No, because this orphan has to soft-shoe it through a feature that thinks that illiteracy...

At this point, you might be forgiven for feeling a serious case of remake-fatigue. It seems every other film these days is a re-boot or a re-imagining of some beloved classic or other, with very little in the way of originality on display. With the release of its new trailer, however, it seems that it would be inadvisable to dismiss the upcoming new adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Annie, as one of those tedious revisits. This one actually looks kind of awesome.

Cameron Diaz has signed on to join the cast of Will Gluck's upcoming Annie , Deadline reports. She'll play the head of Annie's orphanage, Miss Hannigan, opposite Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx. Based on a daily comic strip that debuted in 1924, "Little Orphan Annie" told the story of a little girl who, after escaping from an orphanage, is taken in by the rich Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. The comic strip, originally created by Harold Gray, continued long after the author's death, ceasing publication only recently (The final strip ran in June of last year and featured a shockingly dark cliffhanger finale for those only familiar with the stage version of the character). Better known as a Broadway show, the strip was adapted in 1977 as Annie and is famous for...

Quvenzhané Wallis: From the Bathtub to "Easy Street"?
The young star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" may soon be showing off her singing abilities as she's in talks to take on the title role in "Annie," according to Inside Movies.
"Annie" is based on the Broadway musical (which was based on Harold Gray's "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip) about a lovable orphan who finds herself out from under the thumb of mean ol' Miss Hannigan and into the home and later the heart of gruff billionaire Daddy Warbucks. The Depression-set show features such classic songs as "Easy Street," "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile," "Maybe," "Hard Knock Life," "N.Y.C." and, of course, "Tomorrow."
The musical was previously adapted for film in 1982, featuring Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters, and as a TV movie in 1999, featuring Alicia Morton,...

Hey, remember a year ago when Will Smith wanted Emma Thompson to write him a remake of the musical "Annie" for his daughter Willow Smith to star in? Well, apparently, it's still happening, but now Smith wants another writer to work on Thompson's script. THR reports that Columbia Pictures has brought screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna in to do rewrites on "Annie." McKenna, who adapted "The Devil Wears Prada" and "I Don't Know How She Does It," might be tasked to give the movie a little more humor and sass, as Thompson likely captured the appropriate whimsical family vibe for the script similar to the way she did for the "Nanny McPhee" movies. What likely won't change is that Annie will be an orphan who owns a dog and yearns for her unyielding spirit to be adopted by an appropriate family, as that hasn't changed since the character got its start...

As this summer’s blockbuster season reminds us comic book adaptations are big business with the latest incarnations of heroes old and new filling the local picturehouse and running merry riot over box office records.
Given the twin benefits of a wealth of material on which to draw and a ready audience primed to see their favourites fleshed out and thrown onto a movie screen it seems that we’ll be seeing many more familiar, and some less familiar, cartoon characters in movies of their own.
Jean Dujardin turned the world into a swooning mess when he led Michel Hazanavicius’ award magnet The Artist last year and in this article Anwar Brett takes a look at another of the actor’s roles, that of Lucky Luke in James Huth’s adaptation of the comic book by Morris, which is out now on DVD, as well as nine other cartoon heroes...

Lilla Crawford has been cast to play the title role in the new Broadway production of “Annie,” announced NBC’s Today show on Friday. The 5th-grader beat out 5,000 girls from all over the country and hundreds of online submissions. “I love the show, I love the music and I love the role of Annie,” Crawford told Today. “And I’m so excited to work with the dog!” The role of Sandy has not been cast. October will mark the launch “Annie’s Search for Sandy.” When asked why she thought she had been cast, the 11-year-old replied, “I think I relate to Annie because we’re both spunky.” Crawford also played Debbie in “Billy Elliot.”The production will be directed by three-time Tony Award-winner James Lapine and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blakenbuehler. Based on Harold Gray’s newspaper character “The Little Orphan Annie,” the musical features tunes by Charles Strouse,...

In this very space a few days ago, John Ostrander said, “By this time next year, we may know if we’re still viable or making buggy whips.” He was referring to comics creators, to comics fans, and to the entire comics art medium.
The first person I heard refer to comics with this term was master cartoonist Stan Lynde. In case you’re challenged in matters relating to newspaper comic strips, Stan was the creator and writer/artist of the strips Rick O’Shay and Latigo. He’s a master storyteller, a brilliant humorist and an artist of fantastic prowess. The time was close to 20 years ago, and Mike Grell and I were at a very enjoyable comic book convention at Billings Montana. One of the promoters promised to introduce me to Stan. This was a real fanboy moment for me.

After successfully making his son an international box office sensation with their remake of The Karate Kid, Will Smith is now turning his attention to his daughter Willow's movie career. Most people know the 10-year-old as a pop star of sorts after last year's hit single "Whip My Hair", but now it looks like she might be bringing her vocal talents to the big screen. Once again, Smith is looking to insert his offspring into another Hollywood classic, and he has his sights set on the Oscar-nominated musical Annie for a remake. It might sound like a joke, but then again, so did The Karate Kid... and despite the initial backlash, it ended up being the 11th highest grossing movie of 2010. Clearly Big Willie Style knows what he is doing. According to Variety [1], Smith is looking to recruit Jay-z to rework the music from the Broadway musical and possibly to...

Hollywoodnews.com: The Will Smith Remake Train continues to chug along, according to reports.
And why not? Smith’s reimagining of “The Karate Kid,” with son Jaden in the lead role of a bullied teen learning to fight back, was a global smash, earning $359 million worldwide. It makes sense that Smith would seek another project from our past to retrofit for a new generation.
That’s exactly what he’d like to do with “Annie,” the age-old story of a plucky orphan and the adventures she has with adopted father Daddy Warbucks.
Originally a comic strip from the 1920s, Annie was created by Harold Gray and has several different “parents” over the years. The character has been the star of stage and screen versions, most notably one directed by John Huston released in 1982 with Albert Finney as Warbucks and Carol Burnett as wicked Miss Hannigan.

Will Smith may be gearing up to produce a remake of Annie with his daughter, Willow Smith, in the lead, Variety is reporting. Details are few at this stage (and, indeed, unconfirmed all around), but the article suggests that Jay-z may be involved in either updating the songs of the Broadway musical or providing new material altogether. The rapper recently worked with Willow on her single, "Whip My Hair." Based on a daily comic strip that debuted in 1924, "Little Orphan Annie" told the story of a little girl who, after escaping from an orphanage, is taken in by a rich Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks.
