Hank Azaria is in negotiations to direct the layoff comedy Outsourced for Columbia Pictures.
The funnyman who voices the characters of Moe Szyslak, Apu and Chief Wiggum on Fox's long-running series The Simpsons is set to make his feature directorial debut on the project. He helmed the 2004 short Nobody's Perfect, an ensemble comedy featuring Ellen Pompeo, Maria Bello, Sarah Silverman and himself.
Outsourced is set in motion after an American factory is shut down and transported to Mexico. Two men from the production line venture south of the border to get their jobs back.
Columbia bought the pitch in 2004 from scribe Timothy Dowling as a starring vehicle for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson (HR 8/31/04). Currently, no cast is attached.
Eric Gold is producing, while Sony's Jonathan Kadin and Doug Belgrad are overseeing for the studio.
Azaria, who is coming off his Tony-nominated Broadway-run of Spamalot and the Emmy-winning television show Huff, will lend his voice to Fox's upcoming summer tentpole The Simpsons Movie. His recent acting credits include Along Came Polly and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
Azaria is repped by Endeavor, Sanders Armstrong Management and attorney David Weber.
