For movies about killer spiders, the things that are generally of primary concern are the size and the volume of the spiders. With that in mind, connoisseurs of this horror subgenre should be pleased to find that Sébastien Vaniček’s feature-length debut, Infested, delivers on both of those fronts. While the spiders here, a highly poisonous and aggressive desert species, may initially emerge at a deceptively normal size, they gradually balloon to larger proportions as they overwhelm an apartment block in a French banlieue. They’re also a rapidly reproducing breed, to the point where their offspring and their offspring’s offspring are eventually scampering all over the building’s walls, ceilings, air ducts, and residents.
In expected creature-feature form, Infested is quick to explain how these deadly arachnids made their journey to an unfamiliar urban environment. Following a frenzied opening in a patch of Middle Eastern desert where three...

Alex Garland’s speculative and apolitical action film might be a box office hit but it’s a frustratingly weightless experience
The music video for Mia’s Born Free imagines a ginger genocide, with humvees of jackbooted, gas-masked stormtroopers raiding a high-rise housing complex to round up redheads. Even before the condemned are bussed out to the desert and used for target practice, the camerawork luxuriates in extreme content – needless collateral brutalization, a slow-mo closeup of a man smoking from a glass stem, a harsh coitus interruptus for a nude couple. All the while, a driving synth loop and kinetic cinematography keep things moving at a brisk, exciting clip befitting the high-energy banger at hand; one of the goons mugs through the fourth wall and lip-syncs a “whoo!” in time with the track.

Singer Dua Lipa, who has been reported to be dating British actor and model Callum Turner, has now opened up about the influences of love splits on her life.
“I think overall, (dating) is just a little confusing. It’s either through friends of friends or people you trust where you can meet new people, because (dating) is not really so straightforward when you are, I guess, a public person,” she told Rolling Stone magazine.
She added: “I’ve had break-ups in my life where I felt like the only kind of break-up you could have was when things just ended really badly. Things ending in a nice way was such a new thing… it taught me a lot.”
Her remarks appear to be a reference to her split from her French boyfriend Romain Gavras, 42, the son of acclaimed film director Costa-Gavras. Reports began circulating in December the pair had...

While they were seen making separate exits out of the theater, they later went out for dinner together and were photographed alongside each other.

Once upon a time, there was a virtual gathering place where minds from all walks of life would congregate together to share ideas, memes, opinions, (an unflinching amount of vitriol), and breaking news without the filter of a corporate owner. There were even little distinctive markings so members could differentiate between a random person screaming into the void and an authenticated, certified professional.
And then, tragedy struck. A wealthy albeit embarrassingly insecure wannabe leader purchased the gathering place to turn it into a personal praise circle, dismantling the culture that was working well, and replacing it with chaos. Suddenly, it became much more difficult to determine whether or not something being shouted in the gathering place was based in fact or just the unfiltered thoughts of blabbering fools. This is precisely why in 2022, people mistakenly took a scene from the Netflix film "Athena" as an act of political unrest.

First look review: the award-winning director of Cannes hit Les Misérables returns with a muddled and blunt-edged film about underprivileged Parisians
The films of Ladj Ly, heir apparent to the mantle of France’s street-level cinéma de banlieue, land with the force of molotov cocktails – scorching, destructive and imprecise. His narrative debut Les Misérables took the jury prize at Cannes for its viscerally rendered tensions between immigrant populations and brutal police squads in the state-forsaken suburbs, undercut by a noncommittal final tableau that implicitly asked why we can’t all just get along. He co-authored the script for longtime friend Romain Gavras’s drama Athena, which applied a similar formal elan to a clash between the penniless disaffected and the riot cops, then concluded with another ambiguous partial exoneration for the aggressors. Los Angeles, July 10 (Ians) Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa shocked eagle-eyed fans as they spotted an X-rated detail in the background of her recent selfie.

Dua Lipa might have become a household name thanks to her incredible music career and enviable style, but her name also caused a little confusion for her when she was younger. The name "Dua" means "love" in Albanian, inspired by where her parents are from. "I understood the duality of my heritage from an early age," she said at Hay festival, via the BBC. "People would always ask where my name is from. I was really proud of it, but when I was younger I wished my name was, say, Hannah - something 'normal' and English."
The singer spoke about her childhood on June 4 at the literary festival, explaining that "there was always the idea of being from two places at once." Lipa was born in London after her parents moved there to escape the war in former Yugoslavia. She moved back to Kosovo at 11-years-old, before returning to the...

If I need to tell you what a great year for movies we just had in 2022, you might be perusing the wrong website. Sure, there may be a lot fewer movies hitting theaters than we're used to, with the theatrical distribution model still recovering from the industry-crippling pandemic, but that just means there was a little less garbage to sift through. However, even with fewer movies at the multiplex, trying to piece together my list of favorite films turned out to be quite the difficult prospect.
Figuring out my absolute favorites toward the top of my list was quite easy, but determining what movies were going to end up towards the end of the list, especially when it came to shifting films outside of my Top 10 Films of 2022, was a lot more challenging. During an explosive, expletive-filled masterclass at Cairo Film Festival, French director and actor Mathieu Kassovitz covered everything from directing “La Haine” to working with Vin Diesel on “Babylon A.D.”
Talking about the making of “Babylon A.D.,” he said: “Go on YouTube and search for ‘Fucking Kassovitz.’ Once we realized the crazy situation we were in, we made a documentary about it. If something is important to you, don’t do it unless you have the right partners. Because if you don’t, they will fuck you up.”
Making “Gothika” wasn’t much easier.

‘You Resemble Me’ Review: Fractured Life of a Radicalized Frenchwoman Becomes a Kaleidoscopic Biopic
Sisters Hasna and Mariam look alike and inseparable, a few years apart but bonded like twins, sporting identical floral dresses (minus the snipped-off security tags) as they bounce around the fringes of their Parisian housing estate while their neglectful mother sleeps. What these twirling balls of energy say to each other at their most connected — like a mantra of togetherness in a world of hardship — is the title of Dina Amer’s narrative feature debut: “You Resemble Me.”
But that title could also be what Amer hopes the older sister, Hasna, might say today, if she could, about the bursting, restless slice of tragedy that tells her story — a troubled girl from a broken home and an isolating foster system who becomes a lost, searching woman introduced to the wider world through her worst decision: getting involved with the terrorists who lay siege on Paris in November of 2015, dying in...

(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: "Athena" juggles eye-popping filmmaking with harrowing violence, "Saloum" boasts action and the supernatural in equal measure, and "Vesper" delivers the original sci-fi we always yearn for.)
Believe it or not, the idea of blockbusters dominating the multiplexes year-round is only a relatively recent phenomenon. Previously reserved for prime-time slots during the hot summer months, big budget fare has increasingly taken over the other months of the year as studios staked their claim to more and more landing spots. Last year, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" debuted in early September to incredible success, while recent years have seen (the pandemic-delayed) "Tenet," both "It" movies, and even a major re-release or two take the top spots during the month.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Kanye West and Jay Z's No Church In the Wild directed by Romain Gavras. Romain Gavras, the son of director Costa Gavras, is, like his father, no stranger to controversy. Beginning with his incendiary music videos for Justice's Stress and M.I.A's Born Free he has courted some comments for his videos being racially insensitive and excessively violent. The latter depicts a world in which redheaded people are subject to genocide and murder and ends in a series of shots of bodies blowing up, among them young kids and teens. The idea of redheads as a metaphor for the marginalized in society shows up...

Netflix’s VP of international film David Kosse is exiting the streamer after three years, Variety has confirmed.
The company is currently restructuring its European content business and is moving to a regionalized structure in Emea, according to a source close to the streamer. All European content, including films and TV, will now be handled by Larry Tanz, Emea Content Lead, who is based in Amsterdam. Tanz was previously heading the TV business in the region.
Before Kosse joined Netflix, the streamer had local offices in a few cities outside the U.S. However, it now operates 29 offices across the globe in places like Berlin, Istanbul, Madrid, Mexico City and Seoul.
Going forward, the international film team will be led by Teresa Moneo who will report into Scott Stuber, head of global film.

Exclusive: Veteran film executive David Kosse is leaving his post as VP of International Film at Netflix amid a restructure of the company’s European content business. Kosse joined the streamer in 2019, overseeing all international film production and acquisitions with a focus on making and acquiring significant non-English language films with global appeal. He is expected to continue to produce for Netflix and others.
His decision to exit comes as the streamer has expanded, moving from a few offices outside the U.S. just four years ago to 29 in major cities throughout the world. It is now shifting to a regional structure in Europe, Middle East and Africa much as it already has in Asia Pacific and Latin America.
Going forward, Teresa Moneo will lead the International Film team and will report to Head of Global Film, Scott Stuber. The changes also result in all content categories (film and television...
